He had to get more practice in with ‘the kid’; everything had been so crazy he hadn’t gotten to check in as he wanted, so he texted after work and hoped for the best. It had at least not been the latest shift ever.

He really hoped the kid had been practicing; he needed to get over -feeling bad- about hitting people who were trying to kill him.

He double-checked that his car was locked and made his way towards where he’d suggested they meet with the hopes that the kid would make it.

He scrubbed his eyes, thinking back to the Dog fiasco, thinking on how best to deal with trying to keep his foot in a door, that he might eventually end…very badly.

It would probably, end badly.

He wasn’t even any closer to figuring out what happened to Priam, well, WHO happened to Priam.

“Come on, Kid, text back and get out here.” He grumbled.

Gismondine was startled when he got the text message, though it normally didn’t take much to startle him, but he hurried to the meeting place, powering up before he thought about the present he had brought for the two of them...they could simply eat them after this training or practice.

Or whatever.

Of course, the text that he had thought he sent back to Parisite hadn’t gone through either, so he never did manage to let his Captain know he was coming, but up he trotted, finally.

Luckily he was close, and when he saw his mentor...friend? He broke into a grin. “Hi! Hi I’m here! Thank you very much for inviting me!”

He knew that he was abysmal at this whole thing...and if Parisite’s training could keep him alive...well. He welcomed it.

"How have you been? Are things good? Are you good?" He was still alive so that...that was a plus.

“Eh… I’m alive eh? How are you fairing with the Holiday so close?” He offered.

“Been practicing?” He added and held up a hand just in case the kid might take the initiative to show off how practicing hitting things might have gone.

“Sorry I haven’t checked in, friend’s house burned down, kinda been s**t!” He admitted.
“Plus side, haven’t seen hide nor hair of that Snickerdoodle b*****d.” He grinned.

“I’m...I’m doing okay. Still trying to figure out what I want to get for my sister and friends but...that’s…” Gismondine hesitated and his grin was sheepish, and almost apologetic. “...That’s a me problem...not a Yu problem…”

Oh, he hoped his friend understood the joke, if he didn’t...well. At least he could distract him with showing how good he had gotten.

Quickly, he landed a punch in the open palm of Parisite’s hand. “I’ve been practicing a lot, yeah...I wanted you to be proud of me, and I thought...it would be good!” He hesitated, his eyes widening. “...Your friend’s house burned down? I’m so sorry! Do you need anything? Can I help at all? Is your friend okay?” He had intended to land several punches, intended to look really cool but...that sounded horrible!

He huffed a soft laugh. It was almost the kind of joke he’d make honestly and he let the smile show.

He’d have considered the punch more but, the reaction to the house, the offer to help.

s**t… Nelson was the kind of person they deserved.

“He’s moved into our house, he’s mostly ok. It’s been a s**t month you know? I wish we could have saved more of his stuff.” He shook his head.
“If I find out that someone was behind it though? I will turn them into steak tartar and then feed it to a rabid raccoon just so I can watch them s**t out the results.” He put a chipper smile on his face at that thought. Honestly, if he found out who threw Priam off a roof, that would be the kind death. The longer things went without a clue, and with things just stacking up one after another - well. He had time to plan.

Not that he was compensating or anything for the feeling of impending rejection. At least if he found the guilty party he could pretend it was all their fault, and not that he knew damn well it was his fault that he’d be shut out in the end.

Gismondine nodded, his pale eyes soft and full of concern. “Is there anything I can do to help? Does he need anything? If he’s my mentor’s friend, then that makes him my friend by proxy, I’m so glad that he wasn’t in the house! He...he wasn’t was he? Ah! People are so lucky to have you, you know. You’re like...a hero! You saved me...you gave him a place to stay!”

He sighed happily and looked at his Captain with an expression that could easily inch towards hero worship if he wasn’t careful. He was just…kind to Nelson and…

Well. It was a perfectly normal reaction. Especially upon learning that he wasn’t only kind to Nelson.

“You really care about people, and I think that’s really nice. Not many people do anymore, it seems...ah...I mean! You stabbed someone to save me, so I don’t doubt you at all...do...you...need to punch a little?” Gismondine held up his own hand, his smile shy, but clearly, he was trying to be helpful.

Well, that edged dangerously close to hero-worship, and that just wouldn’t do.

“Uh…naw man, I’m just good at getting by, it’s not even my house. He’s an old friend of the dude I live with, I mean, he’s really cool too, so I’m glad he wasn’t hurt, and I was in the right place at the right time for you. Glad you made it, sorry you got recruited in a shitty way?” He shrugged...

“Naw, I’m ok… show me yours again? I sorta derailed that with talking about the house.” He gave an embarrassed look.

“I want to make sure you can be an actual hero okay? You seem like a decent kid.”

The lieutenant hesitated “Well, your getting by led to me living so...I’m glad you’re good at it!” Gismondine hesitated and nodded, curling his hand into a fist, delivering several decent punches to Parisite’s hand, his tongue sticking out of his mouth slightly in concentration.

“I want to be a hero too. I want to be like you, and to save people and protect people I care about...I’m glad that you’re in the right place at the right time...that’s such an important thing!”

He gave a last, strong punch to the male’s palm, making a confused little “Oof” His eyes flickered upwards. “...I’m...I’m not hurting you am I? I’m so sorry if I am! I got carried away…”

“Dude ... don’t worry about hurting me, trust me. If I was worried about your hits just yet I’d tell you. Besides it’s my arm not my face okay? Look... if you ever have to hit someone in the arm to like, get them to stop, aim for like, here and here, he pointed to where the muscles of his arm dipped. It stings like a mother fu... errrr, it hurts when you do it right.”

He was absolutely not trying to watch his mouth more after running into that kid vigilante, nope.

“And if cinnamon b*****d shows up and I’m not there? Take your foot, put the arch of it like... here.” He tapped his shin, and just, jam your foot down as hard as you can, just press in as hard as you can on his shin. Shins have s**t for protection, that’s why it hurts so much when you whomp them.”

“Whomp them...I...I can do that.” Gismondine reached out and touched the spot that he was shown and after a moment, drew his fist back and landed a solid punch to the spot, his eyes flickering to Parisite’s face. “...Like that? I...You’re not Mr. Cinnamon so I don’t want to whomp you but...you...said don’t worry about hurting you…”

So...the punch seemed...fair. Kind of mean still but...Parisite had told him to! This was simply training.

“...I really hope he doesn’t show up again...He…”

Swallowing, Gismondine suppressed a shudder. “...I never want to see him again...I hope that I never do…I...I have the terrible idea that I won’t survive another meeting with him...especially if you’re not there to save me again.”

“I hope you don’t either....” Parisite said looking grim and anxious.

“Dude is freaking nuts, but this city is good people in it, if you are unfortunate enough to run into him without me, I hope someone will.”

He took a breath and huffed it out:

“Hell... if WE run into him again, and for some reason I can’t get us out of there? You book it, that’s an order. Book it and power down and call our boss lady, he’ll, call anyone who’s stronger.”

“And uh, yeah no that was good you’re getting there with the punches!”

The lieutenant lit up with the praise and looked as though he were close to just bursting into laughter. Or tears. It could have been tears. “Oh. Well, yeah. I can do that. The running, I mean. I can run. I…” Gismondine swallowed. “I will do whatever I can to get away...hopefully one day I can teleport like you can...that’s super cool…”

He hesitated and gave one last punch, misjudging this time and getting Parisite’s shoulder, making a face when he did so and shaking out his hand.

“...I have been practicing a lot. I’m glad you noticed! That...makes me kind of happy. I’m...not used to getting told I’m doing good…”

But it was such a nice feeling.

He hesitated. “...I’m hungry! Can we go get some food?”

“Uh…yeah sure.” He blinked. “s**t, did you not eat?” He blinked. “You can tell me if you need to stop and get food, I'm not an a*****e.” He gently cuffed the kid’s shoulder.

“Also yeah… aiming practice will help with that, especially if your target is moving. Way too easy to pop a knuckle at least if you punch something boney.”

“I’m sorry you … don’t get told that more often.” He added, the feeling too familiar from when he was younger. To the point that resentful looks were as much praise as actual words of congratulations, well… maybe not the same as being praised but, pleasing in a vindictive way.

“Whatcha want to eat kid?”
