Gismondine was nervous about being out like this again. He had been careful with his bruises and was pleased that nobody had noticed. Thankfully the weather had been cold so wearing a turtleneck sweater every day hadn’t raised any concerns from Q, and he simply hadn’t had the time to see Xander.

Well, that wasn’t entirely true...there had been time he just...didn’t have the words he wanted to say, and didn’t want his friend to worry, because knowing him, the bruises would be seen.

He had texted Yu earlier in the day and had been pleased to be told that they could meet up tonight for training. Or...self help. Something.

The lieutenant scratched the back of his head and looked over the knife and fork that were supposed to be his...weapons. It would be easy to have a picnic with them, but the idea of fighting with such flimsy cutlery...it seemed like a joke. Honesty, most of this seemed like a joke.

Swallowing, Gismondine looked around, feeling something with these newly awakened senses of his, and hoping that it wasn’t something...bad. If he met up with the choking man again…

Well. He doubted he would survive this time.

“Hey! You noticed! Good job.” Parisite said with a grin, sliding out from where he’d been lurking and where he’d powered up to see how long it took the kid to register the change in the air.

“You’ll know if it's one of …ah, Us or them, they feel -awful- when they get close.” He confided.
“Plus, that b*****d smells like he lives in a house made of Cinnamon brooms, in my opinion.” He added, making a face.

“Anyhow, here, let me see what you have to work with.” He held out his hand to see the cutlery.

“I want to see what I can think of for them before we start on like…seeing if you can punch without breaking your thumb. Trust me; you don’t want to break your thumb; it SUCKS.” Somehow, he doubted Gismondine had ever thrown a punch, let alone broken anything trying to do that.

“Also, don’t worry, if that rat b*****d shows up, you’re going to run till you find somewhere to power down, okay? Don’t ******** with him, go.”

The voice was moderately familiar, but the praise...Gismondine wasn’t...used to that. Not when it was something other than finding good places to eat, or moderate praise for his studies...but being praised for something he truly didn’t understand one bit…

What a strange experience.

“Ah! C-captain! I’m here...you...you want me to attack you with...with these? I...you’re sure that they aren’t a joke? Because...they’re not even...good silverware...wouldn’t a steak knife have been better…? Or a knife that...didn’t b-bend so much…”

But...what had Parisite said? He had been given crochet hooks or something? Did...did this organization just want their recruits to perish? But...that didn’t seem likely...or Parisite wouldn’t have tried so hard to save him…

He held the flimsy pieces to the other male and bit his lip. “...I could throw them, I guess...and a fork to the arm...doesn’t...sound nice, but I’m afraid the fork would bend before doing any real damage...it...it’s not like this is a cartoon or anything...and no, I don’t...know how to punch. I’ve never...ah. Never had to punch anyone.”

“They do give us s**t weapons to start with.” He made a face, his hooks would have snapped their handles and gouged his own hand more easily than they would have done damage to people except for a pinpoint bruise… unless he aimed well.

“Think of places you could aim that would smart like hell if you got something like this jammed there. That’s the start of this…” He took the weapons to turn them over in his hands.

“Like… aim the fork under the chin, aim the knife for an ear… an eye… even if you just make them flinch that can be a huge difference.”

“Not saying poke my eye out, or deafen me, but we can make targets you can aim at or something, I could put some foam on.”

He sighed at the confirmation that he’d never tried to punch anyone.

“Ok… let's start with ‘make a fist’.”

He wanted to know where the kid would put his thumb.

Aiming for the ear or the eye… Gismondine looked at the cutlery and hesitated, nodding slowly. “...I am studying medicine. I want to be a nurse, ah. I wanted to be a doctor, but I just...don’t think…” He shrugged. “Anyway, I...can find the best places to use the weapons, I’ll take an extra look at my books...that is really good advice.”

The lieutenant paused and curled his hands into fists, his thumbs curling over the tips of his fingers. “...A fist like this? Is this what you wanted? D-do I have to punch you? I don’t want to hurt you on accident Parisite! I would feel really bad if I did…”

But...how else would he get stronger if he didn’t practice. “...D-do you think I should do a...one of those fitness classes where I punch the um...the punching bag?” Would Xander like him more if he had muscles? It was an interesting thought.

“Nurses are important too.” He said firmly, eyes darting to meet his Lieutenants, still such an odd concept. Trusting him to take care of someone, to teach them so intently.

“Yeah, good, some people put their thumb inside their fingers, bad idea, trust me.” He shook his head and then proceeded to check the angle of the young man’s hand.

“Also don’t worry about it, I’ve taken a lot worse than a punch from someone like you, Besides we’re going to go slow at first, someone told me once that helps muscle memory, learn to do it perfectly slow and you can do it fast the same way, but I want you to know the basics in case there are more like Latte-Topper b*****d.”

He shifted and guided Gismodine’s arm. “Ok…when you punch, you’re gonna put your hip behind it. You’re not a big fella, so this is extra important. It puts more behind your hits. Unless you’re just out to startle someone you want to MEAN it when you hit someone. Don’t start something you don’t have a plan for.”

Gismondine hesitated and managed a very shy smile, his gaze falling after only a moment. He wasn’t sure how to handle all of the praise. It...he hadn’t done anything useful other than...other than survive, but he had to admit...it was easy to feel...that maybe he really could be important.

It was different to hear such things coming from a stranger rather than from your best friend...it...it wasn’t that it meant more. But. Parisite was under no obligation to say any of this.

“That can break your thumb, right? I...don’t fancy having a broken anything...ah...if that’s safe to say.” He couldn’t imagine that his Captain would want him to get hurt...otherwise, this whole...learning thing was kind of a waste of time...but some people thought that getting hurt was the only way to really learn...so…

“Hit...with my hip behind it?” Gismondine sounded confused, but tried to hide it, and followed the movements that Parisite was showing him, though when he demonstrated himself, he jut his hip out like he was dancing and stumbled. “...That...that isn’t what you meant...I don’t understand...what you mean…”

And there was...there was no way he would ever...he could never see himself being in a situation where he would want to hit someone...that sounded so mean...

“Like this.” He said and placed himself close behind the other man, making him follow his movements bracing his feet and nudging the other's foot to match his own before drawing his arm back by holding the wrist, and then turning them both forward.

“Push from the waist, see? Your power comes from the …from the turn.”

He pulled him back and did it again. “Keep your wrist level… that's the other thing you can break. Don’t let it drop when you hit.”

He hesitated and drew back.

“Sorry… that was kinda …” He cleared his throat.

“Don’t do s**t like that without asking.”

He cleared his throat.

“Think you got the idea?” He added, tipping slightly as he slid back.

“… You didn’t bring cash, did you? like… as a civ? I would just about stab someone for a coffee let me tell you.”

Gismondine was a little happy that...that he wasn’t mocked for how stupid he looked. Not only that, but the male took him through the correct motions...and he thought...maybe he could actually do this. Maybe. “Don’t do...don’t do s**t like what?” Looking up at Parisite, Gismondine hesitated and moved through the movement again, his fist colliding with the male’s shoulder, eyes going wide. “...Oh. Don’t hit people without asking. I’m so sorry! Did that hurt you?”

There hadn’t been hardly any strength behind it, but still, it felt like a harder hit than he was used to having ever done.

“I...I’ll get you coffee, I’m so sorry! I didn’t mean...I didn’t...You’re a good teacher and I’m sorry I actually hit you…” There was moisture building at the corners of the male’s eyes and he quickly wiped it away. “...P-please don’t hate me...there’s a cafe down the street...I’ll buy you whatever you want...okay?”

He really, really didn’t want to get into trouble for this.

“W…NO..nono. I meant what I did not what you did. Grabbing your…coworkers without provocation or invitation. Kinda shitty. Now stop apologizing good lord. I don’t hate you! BREATHE!”

“Also that was…a good start, don’t apologize for hitting me when I was teaching you to hit!”

He exhaled and tipped his head back.

“If I get some like… foam will you feel better? Sometimes you gotta hit someone ok? Like… no one needs to strangle someone they just met but sometimes you do have to punch people who are strangling people they just met, okay? Why are you so nervous? Hell, if someone made you jumpy get mad at them don’t apologize.”

Gismondine nodded and swallowed hard. “You were teaching me...I understood what it as. It didn’t bother me. You...didn’t hurt me or anything...there’s no need for you to be sorry either…”

He fell quiet at the question of his nervousness and shrugged. “I...don’t know. I’m sorry. I’ll practice punching. I’ll make you proud…” He hesitated and finally looked away. “I...was ridiculed a lot as I was growing up. The only person I ever really had was my sister...I...I’m used to being made fun of, I guess...Used to people putting me down.”

Swallowing hard, the lieutenant wiped his eyes again and forced a smile. “...Do...you want to get the coffee now…? I...they have good sandwiches too! I’ll get you whatever you want as a thank you for not giving up on me…” Without a doubt, Gismondine knew he wasn’t fit for this. He wasn’t strong, or fierce or anything. He was a marshmallow...but Parisite was still working with him.

Now he just felt sort of bad, clearly one of the lessons here was going to have to be finding a shred of self-confidence in the kid.

“If you’re hungry sure, you can generally ignore me bitching about coffee ok? It's just the holidays and it’s been…crazy.” He crinkled his nose and sighed.

“Let’s have you throw a few more punches, like, punch my palm ok?” He held up his hands, palms out.

“I want you to try and get the punch form down, if we have to do this in civilian clothes and we just, I don’t know…go to the Y or something.

He moved and leaned against a wall to brace himself just in case the kid found it in him to throw a good punch.

“Tell me what they do to pick on you kid.”

“Why...would I ignore you when you want coffee? You’re doing so much for me...it’s truly the least I can do…” Gismondine looked a little sick at the thought of having to punch his Captain again, but nodded, resigning himself to it. They could go to the cafe after. He could have his hot chocolate...maybe even get some sprinkles on it, just to really cheer himself up. They would have the holiday sprinkles out now...and he idea of having snowflakes floating in a sea of whipped cream made the lieutenant feel just a little happier.

He drew in a breath and curled his hand back into a fist, concentrating hard this time, focusing on hitting the male’s palm each time he punched, and getting about six in, his strength increasing a little with each one he threw.

“...You know. It was a long time ago. Now that I’m in university, it doesn't really happen...but. All throughout school it was pretty bad…” He hesitated, squinting at the male. “...You can’t be that much older than me...I’m not really a kid…”

“Age is relative, sometimes it’s how much you’ve seen kid.”

He had to smirk a bit, the kid was now ‘kid’ forever if he knew it or not.
He measured the punches against his palms, feeling the impact before stopping him again.
“Better, you have the right idea, when you hit…focus it through…here.” He tapped the first two knuckles. “And don’t think about hitting the target, think about where you want to hit, then strike like… behind it. Like you’re trying to push it back where it SHOULD be, okay?”

He braced himself again, “Go! If you get good enough at this you might make it to ‘Captain Kid’ He grinned at his own joke.

“if you don’t get better I’m gonna start calling you Jeeves.”

“Well...I have seen a lot...I guess.” Gismondine gave what was almost a pout and nodded at the advice, drawing in a breath and beginning to punch again, working to do what he was instructed, trying to focus the hit, his strength into the first two knuckles, hitting Parisite’s palm with a little more precision.

It was easier to control when he thought of it that way...how interesting.

“Captain kid? Wouldn’t it...ah…” He hesitated, giving a little smile. “...It would be Captain Gismondine, wouldn’t it? But...I can’t picture me helping to train someone like you’re doing for me...oh, I’d be abysmal, I bet...I’ll get better! You won’t have to call me jeeves...I’m...I’m really not a butler...or even butler material, I don’t think...I don’t...understand why this...is the outfit I got…”

He gave one last punch, and then shook out his hand, trying to hide a slight wince. “...I...think I need to build up muscles for this...is it supposed to hurt your wrist? Or am I doing it wrong…?”
