As an Eternal Senshi, Alya knew he was pretty much at the top of the food chain. And yet, he felt like he was more distant from everything than ever. He'd been busy with work--because, as it turned out, starting up a modelling business to compete with the company that burned you was every bit as competitive and troublesome and busy as one would expect.

But Destiny City was still full of all of its evil and all of its darkness, and he wasn't just Virell deVilliers, he was Sailor Alya, too, and he was tired of fake smiling, and lunch meetings and contracts.

Alya didn't have to do any of those things, and who could blame the Senshi of Apathy for being, well, apathetic.

He just wanted some peace and quiet, wanted to rejuvenate himself and let the muscles of his cheeks relax for a bit.

He was in the park--a place he hadn't been in a while but a place he'd always been fond of. It was a cool night but not unpleasant, and the sky was crystal clear. There were energy signatures around him but no one had given him any sort of trouble so he didn't even think he minded them so much.

Besides--he was an Eternal Senshi now. It's not like he was easy prey. He didn't think anyone was going to fight him just to do it.

...It was too beautiful of a night for trouble, he thought, hands on his hips as he closed his eyes and tilted his head up towards the sky to enjoy the breeze.

Now she'd had a few months to explore, Cybele had a much better sense of where the streets of Destiny City led. She still got turned around in some of the darker alleyways that she'd thought might be shortcuts, but she could find her way between the major districts well enough.

She knew the park best of all. Perhaps it had something to do with the fact that there were trees and twisting paths there the same as that otherworldly forest that was the first place she could really remember outside of the barracks. Perhaps it was something deeper. In any case, she kept coming back, and it served its practical purpose just as well as the winding streets. She always found people to drain there.

Although she did stop halfway thorough a draining when she felt the Eternal's aura nearby. Energy was important, but any lieutenant could gather it. Eternals were the sort of dangerous prey that she had been specifically recruited to hunt. She turned on her heel to track the aura at a full sprint, leaving a sleepy teenager gaping at her back.

After a short sprint, Cybele burst through a line of trees. "Kneel," she called out, her eyes flicking across the clearing, "Or you become-"

Her voice trailed off when she caught sight of him. She found herself staring at the distinct red of his outfit, at his hair, and then, for a longer moment, at his face. Something she couldn't explain caught in her throat.

She blinked hard and took a step forward. "Or you become my prey," she said, but her voice had lost much of its sharpness.

Alya was a bit surprised at being commanded all of a sudden, but perhaps a bit more surprised by the sheer lack of awareness he'd had. An agent could have run over and skewered him while he was busy enjoying the nighttime weather.

He blinked at the Corrupted Senshi, as if he didn't quite understand what she was saying. The words made sense, he got that. Just not her.

"Here, are you sure? It's a bit dirty," he protested, eyeing the ground before letting his eyes flick back up to her.

He knew her. He didn't want to know her, not like this, but there was no denying what he was looking at--who he was looking at.

"...You're Cybele, aren't you?" But as soon as he said the words, it was like he had to come to terms with them. He couldn't handle any risk of silence so said, "I hadn't seen you in a while. I was worried something had happened. I texted, but..."

But the Negaverse probably didn't have the same Senshi Phones he was used to. "...Are you okay?"

She'd been expecting defiance and battle. Some hesitation made sense if he was truly one of the ones she'd known well enough to get this sort of an emotional reaction, but she hadn't been expecting questions.

Was she okay? It wasn't something she'd let herself think about, even during the long hours in the barracks or the monster's cellar.

Her shoulders dropped a tiny bit. "I'm not sure," she said, and in that moment, the fight was gone from her voice.

Then the moment was over and the muscles of her face went hard again. Her lips pressed into a thin line as she followed his gaze to the patch of ground. "Metaphorically kneel. Submit. Join us," she said, and while her volume did not raise, her enunciation was much sharper. "It will still hurt and you will still lose part of yourself, so I do not think it is the popular choice, but I was told to give the option."

She held her hands slightly cupped in front of her, positioned for any bows that might be called into existence, but she did not use her magic. Not yet.

Alya looked at her for a few seconds longer, like he was weighing his options. "We can fuss over kneeling and submitting or whatever erotic aggression the Negaverse wants you to commit, but right now I'm worried about you."

He held up his hands, palms empty and exposed--harmless to her.

"I'm not going to fight you. You already showed me your magic before. We ran around in the park, we cleared our heads. We talked. I admired you. I don't know what happened to you, but I can't imagine this is what you wanted. If you don't know if you're doing all right or not, that's what we should be focusing on more than anything else. Come sit down with me, even if it's only just for a moment. We're not enemies, no matter what color you're wearing. You're my friend. Even if you don't remember."

Cybele stared at him for a long moment, barely blinking. When he raised his hands, her gaze shifted to the center of his chest, where his starseed would be.

She did not strike. She did not sit down, either, but as he continued to speak, she folded her hands in front of herself. Violence was still not off the table, but the fact that he knew something about who she'd used to be made him valuable for the moment.

She'd been told to try to get information out of people.

"I am provided for," she said. "I do not have a baseline for what it means to be okay. That is all." She had thought about it, a little. She had been watching others plan for holidays with families and friends while she flipped through listings of shoddy apartments from the Negaverse barracks. She had not felt jealous of them, but she did not think she felt had felt happy, either.

She gave a small shrug. "You should worry about yourself," she added. "The Negaverse will kill you even if you try to distract them with sex jokes."

Alya placed a trust in her that he might not have reserved for most--a feat, given that she was on the wrong side of things. And yet, he couldn't shake the faith he had in her. He watched as her eyes traveled to his chest--as she seemed to relax a bit.

He didn't think himself spared, exactly, but it was a step in the right direction.

"I'm surprised you can pick up on a sex joke but don't have a baseline for what it means to be okay. That tells me all I need to know, really," he admitted. His brows furrowed and he kept his hands up so she could see that he meant no harm but he moved towards a bench not so far away.

"Being provided for isn't the same as being 'okay'. I had food when I was growing up. I had a bed. I had clothes. I wasn't okay. I just. 'Was'. Come sit down," he insisted again. "Nobody hurts you, do they? --Do you go out and have fun, do you have hobbies? Are you able to relax, or treat yourself?"

After only one more moment of hesitation, Cybele nodded and headed towards the bench. She perched on the edge of it, technically sitting, although her back remained stick-straight and her feet were pressed into the ground, ready for sudden movement.

"I am," she said, still watching him closely. "That's a good word for it."

She was still aware that she should probably take his starseed and be done with it, but it had also been months since she had really spoken to someone she wasn't contractually obligated to. She found that she kept talking.

"I got an outside job. There are a few things I'm thinking of trying once I save up a little. I get bored." she said, still careful not to give details. "Although I'm not sure. I am a tool of the Negaverse. I know I am a shell of a person. It feels strange to pretend to be anything more."

She did want to foster kittens. She didn't have to be anything to do that.

Alya nodded, watching intently as she spoke. "A shell of a person?" he asked, lingering on that phrase. "...If you're empty, it's only because they took out your heart and tried to shove you into a mold you weren't fit for. You're more than just a tool. Even if they told you that, you have to know that's not true. --You have to know that you don't have to stay there if you don't want to. I don't want you to think that you're at the end of your road, that there's nothing left for you except to serve them."

He let out a sigh and slumped a little, but his eyes were always intent on her.

"You deserve more than just 'I am'. You had dreams and aspirations and hopes before. You deserve to have those again. They shouldn't get to take everything from you and then just use you..."

Cybele stayed stock still at the edge of the bench. Her eyes followed the other senshi as he shifted slightly, but that was all.

"They don't tell me in so many words," she said. "They bring me candy and tell me I am special and important, but they also gave me a list of people to hunt. I can pick up on some things." There was finally a hint of emotion in her voice, a bit of her old dry humor, and she raised an eyebrow.

"But I do not mind. The Negaverse takes care of their tools."

There was another moment of hesitation, but it was shorter than the others. She had settled in to sitting here and talking to him.

"I spent some time in a world where the Negaverse had less control," she said, voice flat again. "Within days, I ended up trapped inside of a cellar and I was not able to escape for weeks. I had to lick groundwater off of the walls to survive." Her lip curled at the memory, although she did not break her stare.

"So, while I do not know if I am good or even okay, I know that things could be worse. I will take the food and the bed and the clothes while I can get them. I do not see the appeal of going back to being passionate about justice and saving the innocent for nothing in return, especially as I cannot go back to my career."

Alya accepted her words. He took them in, mulled them over, and sighed. "I suppose it's a thankless job. It's not like anyone pays for your hospital trips, no one takes care of you. It's all volunteer work. But it feels right."

At least, it always had to him. No one expected him to go out of his way to hunt someone down, to hurt them. He was free.

He wanted to suggest that there must be someone on the side of Order willing to take her in, to help her career if she were willing to pry herself from the Negaverse, but things weren't always so easy. "Your career," he suggested. "What do you do? Did you do," he corrected, but he didn't think it really mattered.

Cybele looked down to where her hands were folded in front of her. "My work doesn't feel wrong," she said.

Perhaps it should. She had already taken a few starseeds. There were a lot of things she didn't know, but she was aware that hunting down people for the resources they provided was thought to be some terrible thing by much of society. She also knew that it didn't particularly bother her.

After all, the resources were important.

His question was easy enough to answer. "I used to be an actress," she said. "Fleur Willis. You can look her up. She's the one with people mourning her and her bright future all over social media."

She'd had a degree, and a resume, and a polished looking website. From everything Cybele could from her hours of combing through the internet, she'd spent much of her life in the theater.

"Oh?" he asked, and glanced over with something that sort of resembled interest. "I'll look it up when I go home."

It was a disparaging thought, that she knew who she was, that she knew there were people mourning her, that she could see what her disappearance meant to them but couldn't do anything to comfort them.

"You could still be an actress," he suggested. "It's not like you've lost the ability to, you still have all of those skills. I mean..."

He had to consider it for a moment. "...Do those skills help you now? I mean...you've had to change your identity, to become someone else. I can't help you where you are now, but...ah. If you ever decide the Negaverse isn't for you and you want back on the other side, I've got connections. I can't promise you the same career, but I could get you your foot in the door."

That offer must have been what all of this was leading too. Cybele just pressed her lips together even more, her jaw tightening a bit.

"It's not just about what I want," she said, and before he could press her on that, she left her tenuous perch on the park bench and stood there at her full height, partially crossing her arms in front of her.

She looked down at him. "You ask a lot of questions, senshi," she said, something dangerous in her voice.

Although, she still did not attack him, nor did she turn away. She was back to being frozen, staring at him while she weighed her options.

"I do," he acknowledged, looking up at her. He didn't flinch or shy away, or even seem particularly afraid.

"And I always have. But you don't really mind, do you?" he asked. "You didn't before, at least. You let me ask you anything and everything, and when I couldn't find my own answers, you helped me find them. But, it's okay if you don't remember. I'll remember for the both of us."

He remained seated, as unobtrusive as possible. "If you have to go, that's okay. Thank you for talking with me, Cybele. I hope one day we can go running again. If you want to. I still want to be your friend."
