Niiemh had thought to enjoy the season with the rest of the village kids and so she was out enjoying the sights. Lanterns and things were always pretty to look at. She had also gotten some of her own money to spend for later. Some sweet things for her siblings would be nice. So she slowly made her way toward the main area where the vendors were.

She didn't pay attention enough to realize that she was being followed by a trio of trouble makers that were set on playing a trick on her. Judging by their snickers and looks it wasn't going to be a nice one.

Ostensibly, Viltre was out for a walk, grab a few treats for his cute siblings, maybe plot out an especially elaborate prank himself. He did have an unusually full bag on his hip this time, containing something firm. A faint buzzing could be heard, were one to listen closely. Of course by that time, the tall young man might have handed that one back their wallet. Just to keep in practice. In reality, he was strolling along by request. Merle in particular, their stepmother. He was, in her words, to "Tail that little trollop, see where she goes tonight. She might be seeing someone, and I want to know who it is if true."

Really, Merle. You're going a bit overboard lately. Soon I'll need to do something about that, if you don't rein it in some. I'd really rather not need to. There's better uses for our time. Of course, in this case, it was fortunate he had. These amateurs had something in mind for his little sister. The spot wasn't right yet, but their teamwork was good. Green eyes would be able to spot when they moved by watching any one of them. There was another thing on his hip. A smallish waterskin, but he already wore a regularly sized one... They weren't going to spring yet, and didn't seem the sort of vicious to inflict real harm right now. For now, he hung back quietly, waited, watched, the better to examine and interrupt his new prey.

Nii paused to look at something, her eyes especially taken with a cute trinket. It was clear from the look she gave that she fancied it but she didn't get it. Instead she tucked her hair behind her ear and continued on. The girl was still pleasantly unware of her tail.

The trio whispered and pointed, communicating amongst themselves until just the right moment. All at once the three of them surged forward getting as close to Niiemh as possible without her knowing they where there. One was to take hold of her hair while another used the scissors they had to snip the ends off and if need be the third was to serve as distraction.

Patience, as usual, was rewarded. The little amateurs made their move. Still well coordinated, but this sort of sloppiness only passed muster because his sister was lost in her own world. So many people lost track of the real one, he found with a little stalking. He still never understood how they managed to get anything done like that. Three quick steps forward and he'd plucked the scissors from a hip-sheath. The other had undone the stopper of his little waterbag and squirted a viscous goop over another's back: the one with grabby hands. Y'know, I was saving this stuff. 'Prentice tailor, eh?

"For shame, guys. What's she ever done to you?" From what he remembered, Niiemh hadn't done anything... Unless it was that rude boy Merle had tried to introduce? Had he had friends to do this? He hadn't seemed the type to leave it to others. Spinning the scissors on his index finger, Viltre grinned his impish little grin. "Ah ah, let's not do anything hasty. That's honey on your shirt, an' what's honey attract?" The free hand, having replaced the stopper, pulled the buzzing jar up out of its pouch, just enough to show...

The one noticed the scissors being taken and paused to look down then behind him. He caught sight of the goop being poured onto his friend and cringed. Said friend went rigid at the feeling and turned to see who it was. The third of the trio stopped and turned to stare. "What th-.. who are you?"

All of this caught Niiemh's attention and she blinked as she turned her head to see what was going on. She saw her brother and smiled but it quickly faded as she took in the jar and the other boys. "What.. what's going on?" She truly had been in her own little world. "Viltre are you doing pranks again?" Her hands went to her hips as she eyed him.

The boy's reply came easy as a breeze. The scissors stopped on the heel of his hand, like to a knife in a backhand grip. Nothing in his eye nor smile said he'd do a thing with them, but... something in the tall youth's stance emphasized that he was armed, and they weren't. "Somebody with better tricks than you tonight." The other hand had loosened the lid of that jar on Viltre's hip, and the buzzing only grew louder. "Lotta insects collecting honey before the long sleep. Honey's a favorite, innit?"

Though the chirpy little grin didn't change an inch, his sister's attention removed what edge was in his bearing. Without a care in the world, he stepped smoothly up to the tailor's 'prentice, pressing the shears back into his hand. The secondborn brother managed to loom for just long enough, just inside the shorter boy's personal bubble, to make the expression unsettling again. "Aww, y'caught me, sis. Here, friend. Y'dropped these. Be more careful next time, hey? Somebody could get hurt, carrying scissors unfastened."

She watched her brother and shook her head with a simple sigh. "Honestly Viltre. What are we gonna do with you." She clearly hadn't put two and two together yet, or if she had she wasn't letting on. When she saw that her brother returned the scissors she blinked at them then brought a hand to her mouth. "Oh dear. It would be a shame to lose such a nice pair. Good thing you found those for him." She turned a sweet smile on the tailor to be then reached a hand out for her sibling.

"Since you're here, I'll borrow you. I wanted to buy some things for our brothers and sisters." Which was code for 'you can help carry things.' It also ensured her older brother stayed near her so she could keep an eye on him.

Witting or not, Niiemh's corroboration solidified the lie a little. Viltre often found dropped objects. It was a curious thing, how often he found things so lost, and happy coincidence that said items often carried high monetary value. "Oh I could be persuaded to do all sorts of things. Being borrowed is definitely one of them." Manual labor might not have been his strong suit, but he was sure they'd noticed the jar of stinging insects by now. The quicker away, the better.

Brushing right past the boys, the tall scribe strolled briskly onward, heading for a more populated section of the festivities. Mussing or disheveling someone was one thing, but carving off bits was frowned on, even if that bit was hair. Especially since there existed mages who could use bits of others to unsavory effect... Something as mean-spirited as that potential trick didn't go over as well out in the crowd itself. Arm in arm with his younger sibling, Viltre's teeth gleamed an impish gleam in his face. "So! Who were we covering first?"

The lead boy glared at Viltre, clearly not pleased that their trick had been stopped. The one with the scissors watched Niiemh to see if she suspected anything.

Nii happily waved to the boys as she walked away with her brother in tow. "Hm? I thought we'd just go down the line. Acyn first." It made sense to her to start from one and and continue on. Easier to keep track that way. They had a good bit of siblings to shop for anyways. "Or did you have someone in mind first?" Not that it would matter she intended to get something for everyone.

The current goal had pulled off without a hitch. If they turned their ire towards him, so much the better. Viltre could use that, stage something. Even a beatdown was to his benefit if it strengthened the perceptions of his mask. Of course, if they tried going after her again, arrangements would have to be made. Shank? No, he's a little too wild. I'll just do some research, see if I can't break them up somehow. Individually, they aren't nearly so much trouble.

Behind the mask, Niiemh's brother plotted, calculated. His outward face, though, kept up with his sister's errand. "Acyn, hmm? We thinkin' edible, practical, or ornamental? I do remember there was a toymaker selling something he called 'nothing machines'. Could check that out." A trammel was a mathematical modeling device for ellipses, but someone had stuck a handle on the thing and apparently it worked for a toy.

With her brother now occupied with her task she smiled a bit more as she looked at him. Her peripheral vision allowing her to see the boys from earlier glaring after them. She didn't seem to give them any mind though. "Was thinking ornamental. And no pranks on anyone this year. You are horrible with that." She gently scolded her sibling.

The back of Viltre's hand touched his forehead in artful despair. "You wound me, lil' sis. I've learned, I've outgrown the childish pranks of yesteryear. The very thought...!" A moment's pause, to let the obvious lie settle. Jokes, he'd found, were often temporary lies. "This year the pranks ain't the gifts. Those are real." That said, practical jokes were a vital facet of his mask. His siblings, though seldom as artful as he, ranged from clever to ingenious. Giving those up would be an immediate tip-off that something was wrong.

Dropping back from his dramatics before the god of overacting could strike him down, the taller brother relaxed. His long stride still carried him alongside without much effort. "Could do ornamental, though. I've been looking at a blue stone set of earrings for Fajra, and found a nice puzzle ring for Aelyn." A slight shift, to look behind, and see if the boys followed. When they were at least out of earshot, the voice took a slightly lower tone. "That could've got ugly, sister mine. That wasn't a prankster's trick, that was a jerk with an excuse."

She was pleased to hear that he could do the ornamental gifts. Nii was hoping that each of her sibling would enjoy them. "Oh, Fajra would love that. She liked jewelry. Aelyn might like the puzzle, though I imagine she'd enjoy a nice decorated dagger better." While Niiemh always seemed to portray a lack of understanding for things around her, as Merle liked, she never failed to take noticed of things.

When Viltre mentioned that things could have gotten ugly she turned a smile to him. "I assure you I have no idea what you mean. You simply found a pair of dropped scissors." Her tone alone said she knew but her face was still the innocent display. "Come now, lets get to shopping." She wanted to get as far from the three boys as possible.

Privately, he disagreed with the latter gift idea. On grounds of taste, as decorative weapons or tools had always struck Viltre as a poor fate for such objects. And much as he adored his fiery little sister, she was far too quick to jump to conclusions. That would get her in trouble... well, more trouble than a knife would see her out of, someday. "Aelyn's gotta work on her mind, an' puzzles are a fun way to do it. Tell ya what, we can get her the dagger, an' I'll slip her the ring later so nobody gets jealous."

The tall boy smiled, and for once, it wasn't just the mask. A decent deception, this far away from the assailants. Were they to assume both siblings knew, the three might get worried, get rash. Sure, preemptive steps wouldn't end well for them in Viltre's estimation, but it was a complication nobody needed. I'll just have to pop by the tailor's bedroom for a word, later. "True enough. Bit careless of them, I suppose. Think that's one of the stalls I found earlier, just there!." Pointing and bending down closer to her eye level, the other arm wound about Niiemh's shoulders, and the siblings bustled off, vanishing into the crowd...
