Asa quickly understood that he had never truly known exhaustion before now. Each day his bruises mounted and the development of callouses was a terribly strenuous thing. There wasn't a single muscle in his body that didn't ache, but at the very least his anxieties no longer kept him awake at night. It was hard to contemplate who might be after them when he could barely keep his eyes open after their evening meal.
For the time being he was cuddled up near Sev, watching the fire pop and snap in the din of a quiet twilight. Ygraine's brother had been very gracious in allowing them to borrow the raptrix and admittedly Asa hadn't been so sure of it in the beginning. She was rather large and had a propensity to lick. And yet, the beast was incredibly gentle. Even now as she chewed greedily on scrapes of meat she made sure not to jostle him. He had to wonder how much training Sol had given her to make sure a considerate beast and how much was just her kind nature.
With an unsteady breath, Asa pulled his blanket further up on his shoulders and closed his eyes for a moment. He was trying, really he was, but he'd be lying if he wasn't counting the days until they could stay in an inn again.

Traveling with Asa was ... a mixed bag. He wasn't the type to complain, not in words or expressions. Sometimes, it seemed like his body had to speak for him - the first few days traveling had been nerve-wracking, as the cold tore at him and quickly wore him down. By the time they got to Sol's village to rest, Ygraine had committed to foregoing her dresses so she could, instead, dress in leathers and carry the bags on her back so he could rest on Morrigan's back to get some strength back.
Even now, the man remained dedicated to his view of Ygraine as a lady - bristling any time she lifted her finger to 'work', and so while Ygraine was confident that she could have carried on with the supplies... Sol lending them Sev had been... fortuitous, as far as Asa's morale went. At least, as far as Ygraine knew.
Now, he could rest on her back and Morrigan could carry the packs. The older raptrix also seemed delighted to have a younger companion to travel with, and sometimes, when they were camping, the black and blue raptrix would curl up her massive body behind Ygraine and whine, low in her throat, until Sev gave her attention.
It was cute, and distracting - both things that they needed as Asa grew more and more tired.
Ygraine had hoped to stay with Sol for a bit longer, but Asa's fear of being followed, and her own reluctance to drag Sol into her mess prompted them to move on. And now- they were camping under the stars again. It was cold, still - but they were closer to Sauti. There was ample tree cover, and soon, she promised, she could get a proper tent from the next Sauti group they traded with and sleep somewhere out of the elements. It wasn't an inn, but... it was good.
For the moment, she was idly washing out the iron pan that she cooked most of her meals on the road in. She wanted to talk, to break that silence, but- it felt, sometimes, there was still a wall between them. "... So- Asa. Do you have a sweet tooth?" She asked, all of a sudden, after looking at the newly cleaned pot with a thoughtful furrow of her brows.

"Hmm?" Asa snapped to attention, blinking a little too much for his brain to keep up. Had he started to fall asleep? The yawn that followed told him as much, but at the very least these days he didn't bother hiding it. Pretending he wasn't tired when his body so clearly craved the luxuries he'd left behind was just too much work. Raising up a little, the frail iceling stretched his arms above his head, scrunching up his face a little as his shoulders popped.
"I'm not ashamed to say that I do." He smiled with a little laugh. "Looking portly was never really a concern of mine so I was allowed to eat as many sweets as I wanted. What about you, Miss Ygraine?"
He should have offered to help her clean or go gather firewood....something productive. Yet even the act of moving his arms brought a tremor to them. Asa had never truly taken the time to consider just how out of shape he truly was, damaged lungs or no. Now that he was being put to the test he had a new found respect for what she put up with everyday.

Oh-- shoot! Ygraine felt a flash of guilt to have woken him up, but the little show of him stretching, finally relaxed enough around her to do so without bothering to stifle his yawn, made her smile. A smile that turned almost secretive as she scooted towards him, pulling a flask from her belt, which she dangled towards him with a wink before setting it beside her. "I love baked things, honestly - but not enough of that when you're on the road."
In a flurry of movement, she pulled supplies from her bag - a few plump pieces of fruit that she'd picked up from the market before they moved on from Sol's village, a vial of oil she used for cooking, and a bag that she'd previously showed him was a dried sugar that she'd happily scooped up before leaving the capital.
After cutting the fruit and dropping most of the pieces into the pan with oil to cook, she passed one of the pieces to Asa and settled back to sit, idly stirring the fruit slices as they cooked. "I think it's a good night to spoil ourselves a little." She explained as she worked.

With Ygraine moving closer, Sev raised her head toward the woman, a bit of bone hanging out of her mouth. Asa turned his head just enough to watch the great beast roll her tongue around, suck the snack into her mouth and drop a great glob of saliva onto the ground all at once. When he turned back around his face was a shade paler.
His golden eyes watched the flask almost curiously before it was set down. Speculatively, he reached forward to pick it up, tenderly pinching the edges of his blanket closed with his other hand so as not to lose any warmth. "What's in it?" A lady may have carried a fruit flavored water or perhaps a bit of wine, but if he'd learned anything while being on the road it was not to make assumptions.
It was impressive to see just how truly capable Ygraine was. Whenever he thought she couldn't possibly be anymore amazing than she already was some force in the universe just had to prove him wrong. He took the bit of fruit with a murmured 'thank you' and took a small bite. The sweet, sticky residue clung to his gloves, but he really didn't mind.
"...When I was a boy, my grandfather would come to stay with us every summer." He didn't know exactly where he was going with the story, but... "He was my mother's father, and he lived in the East. He had other children, sons, so he never really much time with us but when he did he always brought sticky buns with him." Asa turned the piece of fruit around in his fingers with a contemplative smile. "It didn't matter to me that they were a little hard; mother hated it, but if you warmed them just right they were fresh enough for me. After he died I asked the servants to buy some for me in the market, but they never really tasted the same."

Oh goddess, Asa's face was priceless. Raptrix were... well. Still beasts, of course- and Morrigan, well behaved though she was, had to be kept a bit further from the food, since she had a propensity for trying to steal it. The other raptrix had retreated to the edge of their camp, her massive head resting on her paws, ears flicking forward with interest when 'treats' were being passed around, but quickly lost interest when it became clear her mistress wouldn't give the raptrix any.
Ygraine didn't answer his question, but instead smirked and gestured with her chin for him to go ahead. Whether he drank or just took a sniff, it became clear soon enough that it was whiskey.
The hybrid continued her work, stirring the fruit as they softened... flipping them midway through as she listened.
It was... a relief, honestly, to hear that not every memory back in that place was horrible. She had hoped that... he had at least some kind, gentle elements in his life... otherwise how had HE come to be? Why was he so soft, and sweet and kind when everyone else had turned out so... callous?
"That's a good memory." She commented with a smile, as she removed the pan from the fire and, taking the flask back, poured a liberal amount into the pan. It sizzled immediately, the woody smell of alcohol steaming in the air. She stirred in a measured amount of her dried sugar, then returned the pan to the fire, stirring idly. "When I was little, sometimes... when I got a cold - my baba would make a treat for me. It was so yummy- fluffy, like clouds, and sweet like honey. It was some sort of ... plant from Jauhar, but..." She blushed. She had a feeling he might know what she was talking about, since his family ... might have also come across this particular 'treat'. "I always thought it was meant to cheer me up, but - when I got older I realized it was delicious, but also medicine.. for my throat. But he always acted like he was sharing a secret thing, to keep it a secret from my brother and my papa."

Ah, well, there was no time like the present to test his tolerance. Asa's life of affluence meant he'd had his fair share of wines and lighter drinks, usually served sparingly throughout the night. However, when he took a swig of the whiskey he immediately made a noise somewhere between a gurgle and a wheeze. His arm seemed to lock in on itself as his body was overcome by an instantaneous rigor mortis. Why....why would she willingly keep this on her? He was warmer now, sure, but that taste.
"I think I might know what you're talking about," He coughed into his palm, trying his best to clear his throat around an embarrassed little smile. Thankfully the burn was starting to clear away, and at the very least his body was a little warmer. "A treat like a cloud...my caretakers used to just call it fluff." He laughed. Sobering a little, he leaned forward a bit to watch her work. "Were you ill as a child, Miss Ygraine? Because of your throat?"

Ygraine hadn't thought he would go for it, so when he did she stifled a burst of laughter against her arm, although the giggles and shaking of her shoulders was easy enough to hear and spot, once his coughing was over with. When he was finally able to speak again, she smiled brightly at him over her work, eyes crinkled a bit into her smile. Fluff- that was... that was precious! "I'll have to stock up and make it for you, in case you need it later." She decided with a sweet grin.
As for his question... well. "Ah... no. When I was a kid I was..." She hesitated, then shook herself and just said it. "I was a brat. I always tried to get him into trouble. He knew those forests so much better than I did and would sneak out past curfew to go play in them, but more often than not I'd try to follow him around out there and... usually gave myself a cold, and a bad case of heat rash, from staying out too long, lost in the woods. Meanwhile he was already back at home, safe and sound with no idea I'd followed him out there to catch him."
Laughing softly to herself, Ygraine pulled the pan from the fire, pouring the reduced mixture onto the plates she'd just washed. She finished it off with a sprinkle of pre-chopped nuts and a handful of sweetened oats from her bag, which she normally ate as a snack while on the road.
With a flourish, she presented a plate to him - a handful of fruit cobbler, with a sugary, reduced whiskey syrup coating it. "Careful, fresh off the campfire." She reminded with a grin and a wink.

"Really? You were a brat?" Asa's softer smiled slipped into an almost at the admission. Leaning back, he allowed himself to fall back into Sev's fur, much to the surprise of the raptrix. She stirred just enough to look his way before going back to her bone. "Excuse my skepticism, but I just don't see it." She was always so kind, so considerate...imagining a smaller Ygraine with her cheeks puffed out and stamping her little foot was almost as wild to him as a violet sky.
"You know, he told me a story about the two of you while we were visiting. Something about how he'd gone out one night, knew you were following him and he purposefully took a detour. Sol said he used Sev to pick him up so he wouldn't walk through it himself, but there was something about an ivy patch...I'm not sure about the details, the kettle had gone off, but he did mention a rash."
If anything he'd suspected the brother to be the brat. So far everything pointed to a stubborn, wild little boy who'd taken life by the reigns and a sister who tried her best to keep tabs on him. Sol had said she was bossy, though; and maybe that much was true. She did have a fairly take charge attitude.
"Pure sorcery, Miss Ygraine; I don't know how you do it." Asa's eyes brightened as he took the plate. Honestly, how she managed to make anything look appealing out here was beyond him.

Ygraine pouted her full lips and narrowed her eyes at him, trying to measure if he was teasing her or not. Ultimately, though, her blatant crush pushed her towards believing he was in earnest, and the pout finally shifted into a flattered smile. She didn't have a chance to respond, though, before he was telling her about - Sol telling him stories. H-how? She had tried SO hard not to leave Asa alone with him too often-- of COURSE she should have known her brother was being too kind, in loaning them Sev--
She turned bright red as he spoke, reaching up to fist each hand in a lock of fluffy white hair, tugging it like some sort of safety rope. "Ahh!! He didn't! Asaaaa!" She gushed, forcing herself not to yell since they were still out in the middle of nowhere, and she didn't want to attract attention. But- her cheeks and ears were flaming, and she looked horrified. In a fit of almost theatrical mourning, she flung herself to sit next to him, almost hip to hip, leaning back into Sev a bit heavily. She'd released her hair so that she could pluck up her plate again, though for the moment it sat, forgotten, in her lap.
"Yes- well. I should've known this would come out, eventually." She admitted with a heaved sigh and dramatic stab of her utensil into the cobbler. "I tried to fool you into thinking I was a lady, but this- this is the real me! An abductor of rich lordlings, and devourer of whiskey and cobbler-- For shame--" And, now barely able to suppress an amused giggle and smile, she stuffed a bite of cobbler into her mouth and covered it with the back of her hand as she chewed, clearly amused at herself.
When she was finally done chewing though, she glanced sideways at her companion, smiling.

Asa couldn't help it; seeing her reaction was an instinctual trigger for a rousing row of laughter. The fit was so out of the ordinary for him that it took the boy by surprise and he felt it deep within his gut. She was just so...so put out by it..."F-forgive me, Miss Ygraine, I shouldn't have said anything." By the time he was able to calm himself Asa was having to wipe tears away from his eyes. It was so incredibly improper for him to act that way and yet it wasn't as if propriety had followed him out here!
The sudden impact of Ygraine's weight caused Sev to let out a surprised whine before turning her head the other direction, almost as if he she might retreat from the two of them if she could.
"It may be untoward of me to say, but your brother was very generous in his recollections." Somewhere along the way the two of them had come to a mutual understanding. So long as Ygraine was looked after, as best as Asa could provide, Sol would do his best to help them. He'd started out fairly gruff, but after a few late night healing sessions the two had talked a fair amount over tea and stories had started to slip.
Asa took the edge of his fork and cut a perfectly portioned piece before gently slipping it onto the utensil. "If the whiskey was meant to repel me then you should have chosen a less appealing follow up dish." Raising his bite for emphasis, Asa popped it into his mouth with a happy little sigh. When he'd finished his bite he started to edge out another one. "I've had my fill of lords and ladies; I much prefer campfire cobbler any day."

Far from put out, Ygraine grinned with delight at his laugh - not just a polite little chuckle, but a hearty, happy one that made her chest feel light and bubbly. Still... Ygraine pondered the idea of her brother being 'generous' with anything, and... felt a swell of fondness for him. Unthinkingly, she reached to pet Sev's fur, pushing down the wave of longing for her twin that nearly overwhelmed her.
Her brother, whose stories apparently endeared Asa to her... were unexpected. But so was the almost matter of fact way Asa dismissed 'lords and ladies'. Clearly, he wasn't enjoying life on the road, and the discomforts that brought... but he still seemed happy, somehow. Which... was a huge relief. "I hope it's worth all the road wear and blisters." She pointed out with a lopsided little smile, scooting just a bit closer until they were hip to hip. She picked at her own cobbler, feeling... peaceful, and happy.

"That much remains to be seen." He aimed a bite of cobbler at her pointedly before plopping it into his mouth with a teasing smile. Not once in his entire life had he ever been this banged up. Asa could remember nights so terrible that it felt as if his lungs were being shredded strip by strip, but never pain so deep it burrowed into his calves of all places. They were new aches that didn't go away overnight, but with time he knew they would heal.
And now that she was this close...hip to hip...he really didn't know what to think. The boy had never been this at peace in his life, even when he'd simply resigned himself to death and to think it all came about because of a little late night cobbler. Holding his plate aloft, Asa moved one hand to pick at the corner of his blanket. He had to lift it a little higher than he was able to stretch, but in a rather awkward fashion he was able to drape it over her shoulders as well. "It would be a shame if both of us were ill." His cheeks felt warm just saying it and Asa was unable to meet her eyes.

Oh? Ygraine arced a brow at him, but once she spotted his teasing little smile she giggled and elbowed him gently in the arm, her gaze fond - or, she hoped he could tell, with how her eyes were. For just a moment they sat peacefully, eating their sweets - but then he moved his plate and Ygraine shifted just a bit to give him room - only to realize he was holding up the blanket, for her to share.
One would think he had gallantly descended to her with a sparkle in his eyes and hand outstretched for a dance, for how charming and delighted she felt. If that was ridiculous, she fiercely ignored the feeling as she ducked down just enough for him to drape the blanket around her shoulders, leaning just that bit closer.
"A terrible shame." She agreed matter of factly. She picked at her cobbler again, but.. after another few, long moments she sighed and very lightly leaned her cheek against the top of his hair, smiling to herself.
