Another year, another autumn.
Following that fateful day when he'd stumbled upon his first piece of treasure, Howth had spent a decent chunk of his time searching for more, enough to discover that there was quite a bit of competition in the Belrean trinket trade. These days, he never knew when he was going to invade some other scavenger's stomping ground, and he had gotten out of a few close scrapes by being faster than the other guy, a skill he hadn't realized he might possess until he had needed it.
The annual vedra swarm had come and gone as well, and no one was any closer to figuring out why the creatures had invaded in such numbers yet again. The scholar who did would surely be of more use to the continent than him with his inks. The rains had passed for the most part too, summer moving into fall without serious incident. Fall. The time of year Howth enjoyed the most. Too early for a bundle of stifling layers, just late enough for him to wear trousers and a vest without coming home drenched in sweat. He wondered what it would be like to go exploring in autumn, the red and bronze leaves surroun—
"Hey! Watch it!"
A lightning girl around Howth's age nearly ran him over with the cart she pushed in front of her, shooting him a look that was halfway between dirty and a challenge.
"A... apologies!" The exclamation was only slightly louder than his normal voice, and it was more confused than contrite. What a strange young woman. Did she plan on beating everyone to the center of town and buying up all of the...
Howth froze and launched himself forward simultaneously, lurching a step or two before rebalancing and speeding off toward the market at a much faster pace than his previous stroll. It was the first day that many of the larger seasonal stalls would be open and he wasn't about to miss what he had come for because of some obnoxious kid. Every year for as long as he could remember, Howth and his mother had crafted desserts from the fruit they bought at the autumn market. Pies bursting with fresh apples and pears, breads full of mashed banana, and—once the fruit had been dried—cookies with bits of cranberries and figs that lasted far into the next year. Howth arrived later than he might have liked, breathing heavily as he joined the line that snaked in front of his favorite stall. Sure enough, the lightning girl was two spots ahead of him. When she stuck out her tongue, Howth rolled his eyes. He watched her go inside, shifting his weight and imagining the worst. Bare shelves, fruit smashed, people crowding the aisles...
By the time he was told he could head inside, he nearly tore the canvas on his way past, only to find... normalcy. Smiling Belreans strolling by each other beaming happily with plenty of stock to go around. He took a deep breath, sighing with relief.
"Hello, dear. It's good to see you again." Vetia waited just inside, poised to greet all who entered. The older Geian was half his size and liked to pinch cheeks—the ones on your face when you were young and... lower bits as you grew. She looked him up and down as he turned to face her, eventually reaching up to settle her hand on his shoulder and give it a few pats. Howth could only suppose he must fall somewhere in between. Or maybe she just didn't want to mess with the son of a former bodyguard.
"I have something I think you'll like."
He smiled a bit. "As long as I come away with my usuals, I'm open to new purchases."
She crooked a finger, then moved away faster than it looked like she was able to. Leading him past the jams, cakes, and candies that he generally bought, Vetia gestured to a glass case filled with round, shiny confections in a broad range of colors.
"Candied apples. I'll give you a pair for free if you make your best effort to encourage your mother to be seen eating one."
"It's a good thing she already likes apples." He pointed at a blue one with green speckles and another one in varying shades of bright orange. "I'll do what I can."
She nodded. "I knew I could count on you. Now follow me and pick out which of our other treats you would like."
