Lioe wasn't sure how he had ended up in this position, and he was less than pleased with it. His father had gone on an emergency call when it was supposed to be their day together, the siblings off on some fun jaunt elsewhere. Lioe understood that emergencies happened, but surely he would have been fine on his own! Why did his father have to send for Ujana to check on him? Before she got there, he had tucked himself into one corner of the living room and had his nose pressed into a book. Reading about someone else's chaotic life was much more enjoyable than giving too much attention to his own. Ujana was his half-sister, and the idea of his father being part of "another" family made his head hurt. Hopefully, she would just pop in and head right back out...

Ever since her father and his children had come over from Belrea Ujana had made it a point to keep in contact. She had her own family in Jauhar, her own life, but she also didn't want to miss out on family just because she wasn't too keen on their mother. Even now, years later, things weren't exactly smooth but she didn't let that stop her from having a relationship with the children. At least, as much as they would allow.
Knocking on the door was only a formality; she didn't intend on waiting. Instead, Ujana stepped inside the family home with a basket on her arm and a smile on her face. "Lioe! I know you're in here, where are you hiding now?" The idea of spending the afternoon with the brother who liked her the least wasn't exactly on her priority list, but Ujana wouldn't back down. She was determined to make this work. Walking through the doorway the woman made her way into the living area and peered around, spotting a mop of bright orange hair in the corner. Try as he might that boy simply couldn't hide. "Why are you sitting over there? There's plenty of chairs in this house."

Lioe peeked over the bound pages at the knock, briefly entertaining the idea that papa had returned already. With a soft sigh of resignation at the voice that called out, he sunk back down into his book and tried to be invisible. As much as he wanted to put real effort into hiding, he didn't want to get another earful for scaring the sitter. Once he was spotted, he peeked up over the book again. His eyes flicked over the basket curiously, and he did attempt to meet the woman's gaze... Nope. Too much. It was a long moment before he shrugged, though it may have been too subtle to see. "Comfy here," he said quietly, sinking back down once more.

"Seriously?" Ujana walked up and debated just picking him up like he was one of her brood. She quirked her head to the side, long thick hair falling over one shoulder and brushing against the basket. Lioe was so quiet compared to the other two. Isaia was constantly doing things he shouldn't and Zadia was so persnickety that she made Ujana feel stupid most days. And then there was this kid.
Killjoy.
"How about this then; if you put down that book and come outside with me I'll give you a snack. I bought some really nice treats at the market on my way over. They're probably still warm."

Eyes apathetically sticking to the pages, Lioe attempted to lose himself in the neatly typed words that were lined in orderly rows. Books were so nice and calm. However, he could feel Ujana watching him. She was so intense! He was all set to turn down whatever bargain was about to be made, but a secret word caused him to pause. Very slowly, his pale green gaze rose again to peer at the basket that hung on his sister's arm. Treats? Normal, everyday food was one thing, but treats? Treats or book..? Book or treats..? "Treats for me?" he asked hesitantly as though doubting Ujana's intentions.

"Treats for us." With her free hand she pointed between the two a few times, making it abundantly clear that without her he wasn't getting squat. "If you want some you gotta trust me and get out of that corner."
She could just pick him up by those straps on his pants and drag him outside. It wouldn't be hard; he couldn't weight more than her hammer, honestly. Still, he'd fight less if he went voluntarily and would probably fuss less when her father got back.
Turning back towards the doorway, Ujana took a half-step like she was going to go back outside, looking back over her shoulder to watch him. "You know who would like these? Ishtar. I'm sure that aldabuk could eat your share if you don't want them."

Lips pursing into the slightest pout, Lioe nonetheless found his interest piqued. He wasn't sure how she expected him to trust her! Maybe if he thought of it as doing it for his papa... Ishtar? Yummy treats were for people to eat, not the animals! Sucking his lips back in, he silently closed the book and clutched it to his chest like a shield. "I want some," he quietly insisted as he stood. Instead of moving forward though, his eyes fell to the book. He had to drop the book if he wanted the treat, but could he let go of the protection? His eyes rose again, now attempting to silently bargain to be allowed to keep the book if he went with her.

Once again Ujana was reminded of just how young these kids were. Lioe looked absolutely puny with that book in front of him. Her own children could pack him around, for spirits sake! "Then come on, then." She motioned towards the door with a nod of her head, encouraging him to follow and yet...he stayed still.
With a sigh, Ujana held out her free hand. "You can bring the book on one condition; no reading while you eat. You'll get your sticky little fingers all over it and dad'll tan us both."

Lioe couldn't help how his expression perked up, nodding his agreement to the altered bargain. Perhaps there was hope for Ujana after all? He still held the book tight, but he at least started walking forward toward his sister. "You got sticky ones?" he asked curiously, feeling his mouth starting to water now that he was letting himself get excited for the surprise snacks.

"Yep." She answered proudly. Ujana led the way through the house to the outer landing. Once she was clear of the doorway the elder sister sat the basket down on the ground and sat beside it, carefully moving her hair over her shoulder with a grin. Hopefully this was something he actually liked; she wasn't really sure what to get, but surely he wouldn't be that picky, right? Who am I kidding? It's dad's son.
That...was still weird to say.
Lifting a bit of cloth up Ujana exposed the contents of the basket. An entire batch of fresh maple fudge lay in neat little squares, still warm and slightly gooey. "Feel like hanging out with me now?"

Lioe took a deep breath to steady himself before crossing the house threshold, squinting slightly at the light filtering through the trees. Outside was so overrated... but it had its good parts. At least she wasn't trying to take him to some distant field. He could still feel safe near home. Peeking into the basket at the exposed treat, his eyes lit up even further. It looked so yummy. He bit his lip and gave Ujana a shy smile of excitement. His brow rose suddenly though, and he ran back into the house without warning. It was only a moment before he came back and held a napkin out to offer his sister. "Sticky fingers," he explained, that little smile managing to remain. The book remained under one arm, a napkin for himself tucked in as well.

"See? Not so bad, am I?" Her tone was softer than usual, but no less pleasant. She was trying after all. Just because things weren't on the best of terms with his mother didn't mean she cared for Lioe any less and she hoped that one day he could learn to see that.
She had just been ready to pick up a piece for herself when he took off into the house and she leaned back with a frustrated sigh. Seriously?! After all that he was just going to- "Oh, yeah, good idea." Laughing a little at herself mostly, Ujana took the napkin and spread it over her thigh in preparation.
"Maybe next time I go you can come with me and pick something out for yourself." She grinned, popping a bite of fudge into her mouth.

Once he had set the book tenderly to the side, well out of the way of the fudge, he sat himself down and reached for a bite. With the chewy treat melting in his mouth, Lioe allowed himself a moment to pause and silently observe his sister. He still was not very fond of his extended family. It was difficult to open himself up to the underlying meaning of their presence, and so much simpler to avoid the whole thing... Yet, maybe they really weren't so terrible to be around? Without a conscious effort on his end, each little interaction was allowing him to open up a little further. The fudge was a treat.. but family could be, too. "Maybe," he found himself murmuring in agreement, quickly shoving the rest of the little square into his mouth. Yeah. Maybe not so bad.

Ujana stretched her legs out in front of her on the wooden planks, then drew one up to her chest and lounged. As she munched on her fudge her light green eyes moved over to her brother who, despite everything else about him, had eyes just as green as her own. Maybe, huh? Well, she supposed she could take that. For now.
If it took a few dozen trips with snacks to get Lioe to open up then Ujana didn't see the harm in it. Surely her father and Maritza would enjoy having one less set of hands to deal with for a while as she spent time with him. Hopefully with time things would come easier and even if they didn't he'd never be able to say she didn't try.
