Oh, Alfina was excited! And nervous. Mostly excited! A festival was coming up for the fall to pray for everyone's health and safety through the winter season. It was the perfect time for her to stretch her baking muscles and help provide for the festivities! She had always loved food, and found herself eager to share that love with others.
Of course, she would need to practice and perfect her recipe before releasing it to the public. Who better to test her creations on than her family?
The dough was carefully set into the pan of hot oil, the thick spheres bobbing around until they were a lovely shade of golden brown. Those were pulled back out with tongs and rolled through a sugar mixture. "Caolan!" she called out, making a pyramid stack of the sweet treat for an appealing display. Would this look nice? Maybe she should leave them flat? Or would a different shape be better? Oh, she shouldn't think so hard on it. Recipe first. "Caolan! They're done!"

Caolan wasn't a cook like his sister was, but he WAS an aspiring little artist. So - the young teenager had been hard at work painting tiny miniatures that he had been working on for the past few weeks. Mainly, they looked like imitations of the foods they'd be traditionally eating. His fingers were flecked with dried paint, but he leaned back, beaming, at his collection of tiny figures, when he heard his twin's call.
As if he hadn't been trying to ignore the tantalizing smells all day. He bounced to his feet and scooped up the figures that were dry, tucking them into a pouch where it hung at his hip, then stepped out into the other room, nostrils flaring at the delicious, sugary smell. "Man, I wish I could have some--" He bemoaned, pouting, stealing a sidelong glance with a playful grin as he reached out for the one stacked on top of the little pyramid.

Alfina giggled and reached out to swat lightly at her brother's hand. "You gotta let them sit a minute!" She leaned in to wrap her arms around Caolan's waist and leaned against him eagerly; in part to separate him from the treats, but also just out of affection. When it came to her family, Alfina was as sweet as the rolls she had just made. "First, you gotta tell me what you think about how it looks! Should I try arranging them differently? Should I use something to color the sugar? I want them to be perfect!"

[2/7] Caolan and Alfina had never been like typical siblings who had a rivalry or didn't get along - they were similar, in many ways, both creative spirits and happy, bubbly children. They both valued time on their own, sometimes, but they also both enjoyed company and their family - so, they got along. Always had.
So, Caolan didn't scrunch up his face or pretend like the hug was gross - instead he squeezed his twin sister and squished their cheeks together, face brightening up when she spoke. "So-- so I get to have some before the feast?" He gasped, delighted.
"Mm... well." Caolan turned back to the sweets, tilting his head. "They look real good already... honestly, I just wanna eat 'em up--" He smirked, but didn't reach for them again. "If you make it too pretty people won't wanna ruin it."

Alfina nodded and giggled lightly. "I need someone to make sure they're edible." She was fairly confident in this particular treat, the recipe simple but delicious. She needed to put her own spin on it though, and that was where the variable for error came into play. She could trust her brother to be honest if it did not turn out well. At least it was smelling right! She giggled and shook her head. "If it's yummy enough, they'll eat it no matter how pretty. ..Just like how the girls in town wanna eat you up~" Her fingers tickled against Caolan's side before she turned to make room again. "Okay. Try one!" The fluffy dough had a sampling of jam in the center, and she couldn't wait to see his reaction.

"Oh. I see." Caolan said, feigning resignation. "Fineee I'll try your experiment--" It wouldn't be the first time, after all. But - then Alfina joked about the town girls, and Caolan's cheeks immediately went pink, snatching up one of the treats to distract himself from THAT thought. He was, after all, struggling through a few... crushes...
He took a bite, brushing a few flaky crumbs from his mouth with his thumb as he chewed. The first bite only resulted in pastry, which was good - but the second bite--
His eyes lit up, and he turned to his sister, covering his mouth with a hand and saying-- something-- that ended up a bit muffled by the hand, and the food in his mouth. It sounded enthusiastic, at least!

Aww, Caolan was so cute when he was being bashful! There was no further time for teasing though! Alfina's eyes were locked on her brother, nerves making her skin prickle as she waited for judgement. The bright eyes and the muffled words made Alfina squeal and bounce on her toes. "Really?" she asked excitedly. Not that she understood what Caolan had attempted to say, but she felt that her interpretation was correct. She took her turn then, popping a ball into her mouth to slowly chew. Sugary crunch outside, soft and chewy dough, flavorful jelly center... It was good, but was it good enough? "Think anyone else will like it?"

Caolan nodded emphatically, which seemed to please his sister as she immediately tried the next treat (a fact that he couldn't help but fondly roll his eyes at. Typical, that she didn't try it until HE had but-- well. It ended up okay so--)
"Why wouldn't they?" He asked, his mouth full as he finally swallowed his bite of sweets. Unfortunately, as much as he wanted to help his sister, he also knew very little about cooking- he knew that it was tasty, but not how she could... improve it.
"I like that idea about making it colorful though. Maybe-- we could decorate your platter wiiiiith--" He grinned and produced the miniatures he'd been making, giving a little dance as he carefully deposited them beside the platter, stepping back to look at it with a hand on his chin, and a hum in his throat.
Clearly, he was joking - the miniatures he'd made were random other foods, and looked... strange beside a platter of fried sweets. "Yep. As I thought. Perfect." He announced theatrically, with a wink and grin, inviting his sister to rib him on his 'idea' without fear of actually hurting his feelings.

Alfina's cheeks warmed slightly. There was no reason they wouldn't like it, but... "I'm just nervous," she admitted, debating taking another ball. She still wanted to play a little more with set up though. Now she also had to decide on colors. The addition of the mini figures made her laugh, and she playfully swatted Caolan's arm. "Silly! What if someone tried to eat those instead of my food?" She plucked up one of the figures and inspected it closely. "You did these up really good!" She always enjoyed admiring her brother's skill. They both were quite good at their individual forms of art; something she could be proud of the both of them for.

Really? Would anyone really do that? But before he even thought about it too long, Caolan conceded that their people weren't particularly well known for their keen eyesight. He wrinkled his nose, but huffed in acceptance. Still - Alfina picked up a figure and peered at it intently enough that Caolan's eyes widened hopefully, all thought of critiquing her food briefly forgotten.
He flushed with pride, but sheepishly collected the rest of the figures, dropping them back into the pouch at his hip. "Well - it's the paints father brings back, really." He murmured with false humility, a grin tugging across his face. But he looked at the fried balls again, playfully reaching as if to steal another bite of one. "But seriously - as soon as they get a bite of that jam, everyone'll love it. I like that... colored sugar stuff you were talkin' about though! Never can go wrong with a splash of color."

Alfina giggled lightly. "You know I could use the same paints on the same figures and they wouldn't look anywhere near as good as yours," she berated playfully. Seeing him reaching for another ball made her scrunch her face up in an almost disapproving look. It was difficult to keep such a face when it came to Caolan though! Plus, she was just all-around delighted to see his approval for her food. "I gotta have some to keep practicing with! You can eat the rest later." Spinning on her toes, she rifled through the cupboards to find what could add color without adding strange flavors as well. That put most spices out of the question... "I think the colors should match the jam inside. Does that sound good?"

[6/7] He'd mostly been playing, so once Alfina made a face he raised his hands in surrender, laughing as she turned to peruse the cupboards. Between the two of them complimenting one another, it was a surprise that neither of them had bloated egos - but truthfully Caolan, as a boy, had been far too self focused to ever realize that Alfina needed support and compliments too. That was a ...recent development, by virtue of him maturing. As a youngling, he'd been more likely to offer vague shrugs or annoyed huffs if she asked his opinion, too eager to flounce off and do whatever it was he was so intent on doing that day.
"Unless you wanted to play a prank. Imagine - biting into a brightly colored puff, only to get a mouthful of cream! Or-- vice versa." He beamed wickedly, but otherwise seemed content to prop himself up to watch her.

"A prank?" A smirk tugged at the corners of her mouth, but she quickly covered it with her hand and shook her head. "You're terrible. I could never. They'd never trust my food again." Still... she tapped a finger to her chin. "Unless I told everyone ahead of time. I could call them puff surprises!" She lit up with delight and spun to face her brother with a big grin. "Then I could put all sorts of yummy fillings in! Like whole pieces of fruit, or some sweet cream, or even nuts!" Oh, now she was really getting excited for the festival. "Don't you worry. I'll be making lots for you to taste test for me," she assured her brother with a smile as sweet as the sugar on the puffs she was making.

No? Boo. Caolan pouted, but wasn't too put out at her dismissal if the laughing look in his eyes was anything to go by. Instead, he blinked and tilted his head as she began to plan, his lips pulling into a slow, but happy smile. He loved that he'd helped inspire such a brilliant idea in his twin, and he told her so, drawing an arm around her shoulders and squeezing, lifting his chin in playful pride.
"Yep - totally, completely my idea." He bragged with a false bravado, smiling toothily, returning her own sugary smile cheerily.
