Quote:
Prompt 1: In a village in the middle of an eerie forest, you need shelter. There are many empty houses speckled across a central village, each with its own customizable features. The houses are always made of wood and field stone. They lack all modern commodities, however there is crude indoor plumbing. There are thick glass windows, misty and difficult to see through, and thick wooden doors that are heavy and difficult to move--however all of them have barricades on the inside to keep intruders out. Most houses have several rooms and some even have multiple floors, but there is something aged and almost crumbling about each of them. They are safer than nothing, but they are cold and uninviting. You need to claim one of these homes for yourself, but with so many unknowns, it's probably best to find a group to stick with and have your back. Do you try to take on this oddity in a house, alone? Or do you manage to find people to get along with and share a house with?

Marquette had literally no idea what was going on, and she felt rather lost and utterly confused. She was not at home. She was not anywhere that she knew...and it was so quiet that she couldn’t focus. The worst part of everything was the fact that she was unable to draw her power around here. She was unable to become Wavellite, and have that meager veil of protection to give her confidence.

No, she was stuck in this lonely, quiet place and she was stuck as a human. A Civilian.

Perhaps this was simply a nightmare.

The longer she was alone, the more that she thought such must be the case, but...when she saw someone else--finally, she wondered even more if this wasn’t a nightmare.

He wore a white shirt, and there was a lot of hot pink. Magenta? She wasn’t sure but...he had a lot of it on. “...Yo. You real? Is this real? You don’t seem like someone I’d dream up. My dreams have better taste...besides, if it was a dream, I would hope it would simply be about my girlfriend.” Marquette had her hands in the pouch on the front of her black sweatshirt, looking cold, and more than a little uncomfortable. “...You know where we are?”

The squire stared at her for a few seconds--just enough time to take everything in, and then he shook his head. "No," he answered.

He hadn't felt her at all, but that wasn't surprising; she was a civilian--and looked like one from Destiny City. Not some wayward soul trapped in this backwards world, trapped in time.

He had come from around the corner of a house and seemed a bit curious to find her there. He still seemed to be investigating the parameter of it but cast her another look, this time something that might have been hinting at concern.

"I have absolutely no idea where we are," he clarified. "I was out when the fog rolled in. When it rolled out again, I was here. There are more," he nodded to his left. "I passed a group talking, not so long ago. But I didn't think it was worth making plans if we didn't know what this place was, and what was safe. I am sorry to inform you that it doesn't seem to be a dream. You're more than welcome to look for your girlfriend, though. But, I wouldn't go too far if I were you. There's no telling what's out in that forest."

“I mean...I hope that she’s still at home...I was going down to get some donuts when...yeah. I guess it did get kind of foggy and then I was here but...what do you mean, there’s no telling what’s out in the forest? I haven’t...I mean. You’re the first person I’ve seen...or heard this...place is creepy.”

Marquette shrugged, fiddling with the edge of her pocket now. “...There are others here? Ah. Why are you dressed like that anyway? Were you at some costume party? Or are you some...fancy butcher?”

There were symbols on his outfit, and she had the sneaking suspicion that this was a knight. Not that...he would know she was part of the Negaverse but...still. She didn’t want to have to deal with someone like this...even though.

Well. Talking to something was much better than being alone. “...I’m Marquette. You ah. You cool if maybe I stick around with you?”

At least until she found someone better. Or until she found someone that perhaps she knew.

He regarded her for only a few seconds more before obligation settled in and he nodded. "Mm. Something like that. Mamertine," he introduced. "Just stay close. I thought I saw something moving out there," he said, nodding towards the forest. "...Might just be an animal, but giving the circumstances, I'd rather be safe. I'm going to stay here," he brushed his gloved hand over the rocky wall. "There are a few rooms inside, I've already checked it out. It should be livable, at least for the time being."

He exhaled, gesturing for her to join him as he continued walking around the house. "I think this place will do. I wanted to make sure there weren't any hidden entrances or exits, no weaknesses. Just in case. It will be easier to see in the morning, I think, and get a better feel. You're welcome to join me. There's two bedrooms, so you can have your own without any issue. Doesn't look like it's been lived in, not for a while at least. But I want to get in and bolt the door."

He rubbed the back of his neck. "...Haven't quite felt right since we got here."

Always those eyes. Always something watching. Something just beyond his line of vision.

Marquette narrowed her eyes slightly at the older man and shrugged. She supposed that in the circumstances...staying the night with a stranger was better than staying out in the open where there were...creepy things possibly out in the woods. “...No, I get it. It’s...too quiet here. I don’t like it. I want to go home.”

It sounded so very childish, but she couldn’t help herself. This place was creepy, and if she had to be stuck somewhere creepy...she didn’t want to be stuck as someone who couldn’t even do anything in her own defense.

“...Thanks for um. Letting me stay though. I appreciate it. But, I swear, if you think about trying anything weird, I’ll break your nose. I’m not some fragile flower. Don’t be creepy, old man.” Not that she was really worried but. Still. It was worth saying. She didn’t know this guy...and the fact that he seemed to be powered. And was wearing white...it only made her want to wrinkle her nose.

He was an enemy. And he was being kind because he didn’t know any better.

He paused at the insistence that he not try anything weird, and though he seemed to want to protest and defend himself, instead he simply nodded in agreement. "You won't have to worry about that from me."

He didn't know her experiences. Didn't know why it was important to insist. But he'd seen enough cases to know that there was no reason to be offended by setting boundaries. She was younger than him, and in a position he'd never been in. So, he could respect that and give her what space and assurance she needed. He'd probably never see her again, and it wasn't like she knew who he was, not really.

He had no evidence to provide that she was safe with him, but he elaborated, as he walked to the front of the house and opened the door, "My inclinations favor a different variety. You're far too young for me. And you have a girlfriend," he reminded. "At least one of the bedrooms inside locks, I already checked it. You can have that one. Come on," he said, holding the door open; he scanned the horizons, squinting when he saw movement again. "If you don't feel safe, you can always leave in the morning."

He didn't mind being alone; he preferred it, but he wasn't going to leave her out here on her own when she didn't seem to have any means to defend herself from. Fragile flower or otherwise, civilians were limited in a war heavily based on magical anomalies, and he severely doubted they wound up here through magical means.

“Gay?” Marquette looked suddenly hopeful and much more relaxed, nodding. “Right on. And good for you, old man. I’ll still take the room with the lock though.” She let out a breath and ran a hand through her hair. “...Thanks. For real. I...It is a lot less creepy with someone else around so...thanks.”

Marquette couldn’t help but look behind her and shivered slightly, hurrying into the house.

“...This place really does seem dangerous...ah. It’s nice to meet you and have...protection against…” She gestured vaguely towards the door, shrugging. “...whatever’s out there. I hope you don’t mind if I um. Stick close to you. Unless I find someone I know, which...I kind of doubt but. Still. You never know. In these trying times...all we can do is hope for eggs, am I right?”

She forced a grin and then shrugged. “...Which room is mine? And...are there eggs?”

Mamertine did not mention his assumed sexuality, or her enthusiasm for it, though might have sighed a little at being called old man again.

When they were inside he closed the door and locked it, but gestured for her to follow. "I haven't seen any food yet. If you're hungry, I have some snacks." He opened his subspace to withdraw a small bag and then offered it to her to peruse. Inside were a few bottles of water, a first aid kid, and an array of different packaged snacks. There weren't enough to last for a long time, but there was enough to get through the night and, perhaps, a few days if properly rationed.

He hadn't packed to be whisked away for any long period of time; the snacks existed solely to rejuvenate anyone post battle, or to help anyone who had lost energy.

The question of food was a concerning one and he said, "We can look for food tomorrow when the sun's up, but I haven't seen anything. " Even as he held out the bag for her to pick through, he nodded to the room in the far corner of the house, with a thick door that seemed to have a deadbolt installed. "But that'll be the room I was looking at. It's got a window, not very big, and up high enough that I don't think anything can get through. There's a dresser in there, too. Nothing in it, but I was thinking it might be wise to move it in front of the window to block it off as much as possible, just in case. Put some of the dishes," he nodded towards a few on the counter--clean, but dusty, "On top of the dresser. That way if anything tries to come in, it'll knock them off. If you want some help doing that, I can do it while you eat."

Bless subspace pockets. Marquette blinked, twisting her expression into one of confusion and mild concern. “...Well. Mister magic fingers, hm? Yeah. All of that sounds good. All of those plans. And the food. Ah. I hope we’re not here for a while. It doesn’t really seem like the place where you...will find any good food. I didn't hear so much as a bird, to be honest...ah. What I wouldn’t give for some chicken right now though! Seriously!”

“I think the plates on the dresser sound like a really good idea...if you could help...I’d really appreciate it."

She took one of the bottles of water and a packet of cheese filled crackers. “...It’s nice to meet you. I figure we shouldn’t...ah. Go around forming crazy silent hill alliances if we don’t even know one another’s names. Though...if this is some zombie town...I suppose it’ll just cause us to get even sadder if one of us gets infected and the other has to rip off our head…”

Sounded fun though.

Mamertine nodded, immediately moving into the room while he left the bag with her. His increased strength made this an easy task, and he set about scooting the dresser in front of the window. "I'm sure we won't have to rip each other's heads off. Just try not to get bitten, in any case. I don't know if there are any doctors out here."

He stepped out of the bedroom and grabbed the dishes, returning to put them atop the dresser, making sure to lay them so it was almost impossible to get in without making any sort of sound. Satisfied with his work, he brushed his hands off on his vest and nodded, returning to her side.

"It is nice to meet you too, though."

He wasn't particularly interested in developing relationships with anyone on any side; the less they knew about him, the better. There was something a little reassuring about being in the presence of a civilian, though; less of a threat. She was more in danger than the others, he supposed, if only because she lacked the ability to protect herself to the same capacity as he did, but she was inside. He could stay up a little extra tonight to make sure that nothing happened to her.

"I'll do my best not to get infected with anything if you promise to do the same, all right?"

Grinning, Marquette nodded, snagging another water bottle from the pile and one last snack before going into the room that he had just...zombie proofed? Monster proofed? That he had proofed. “It’s lucky for me that I got to meet someone who’s so strong! I promise I’ll do my best not to get bit, and I promise also that if I do get bit, I won’t be like one of those assholes who doesn’t tell anyone and ends up killing half of his group of friends. Because, hey. I’m good like that.”

Marquette laughed and gave a little wave. “Sleep tight. Don’t let the monsters bite! She closed her door after that and slid the bolt shut, looking at the crude alarm system that Mamertine had rigged up and then collapsed on the bed, sighing.

It wasn’t home...but. At least she could sleep. She should sleep.

...She missed Fawn terribly.
