Cavansite was prouder of Parisite than she had been of almost any of her lieutenants. Amesite was the only other one she had ever felt quite so fond of...but. Even with Amesite, there had been...a wall between them. They had been family, but...she had never laughed with him as she did with Yu.
She hadn’t told the lieutenant what the plan for the day was, but she had brought him with her to her office and plopped down the candy jar, giving a smile and telling him to stay put, that she would summon him when she was ready for him. Ominous, but necessary.
Sterling had made cookies recently, and she had gone over and taken a fair few, and now had them in a baggie, ready to give them to Axinite. She had arranged a meeting with the General King and stood outside his door, five minutes early and knocked softly, standing straight at attention. After a moment, she opened the door and poked her head inside. “General King Axinite? It’s General Cavansite.”
As though he wouldn’t have remembered her. Sometimes, she was a little dumb.

Axinite looked up from his papers like a man who was clearly invested in his work but had been clearly expecting her. “Cavansite,” he greeted, like they were old friends. He’d seen enough of her that they might as well have been. “You’re early, come in. You can close my door if it’s important--I meant to open it for you but it seems that I’ve lost track of time. Come in, have a seat. What can I help you with today?” He pushed his neatly organized papers into a neat stack, just on the corner of his desk, and laced his fingers together. Propping himself up on his elbows, he looked up at her expectantly, but warmly enough that it was obvious that she was welcome here--and that he did, actually, seem happy to see her.

Walking over, the General took a seat and placed the cookies in front of the General King, grinning. “First off, I brought you cookies, and I hope you like them, they’re quite wonderful...and second off, I’m here to put forward my Lieutenant Parisite for promotion.” Cavansite leaned back in the chair, stretching and then moved to fold her legs up, relaxed in Axinite’s presence.
“He is the best Lieutenant I have had in a while, and he works very hard to meet his quotas. I’m quite proud of him, and I know that he patrols often. I know he hasn’t been a part of the Negaverse very long, but there was...an altercation with a senshi which nearly resulted in his death. Someone helped him get away, and I’m not sure who it was, but if I ever find out, I will thank them, no matter which side of this they are on.”
She drew in a slow breath, her mind clearly back on Amesite and how she had lost him. It still hurt more than she could fully articulate. “I want Parisite to have more power so that he can better defend himself, and so that I can begin teaching him how to utilize teleportation. He won’t have to rely on an unknown senshi, knight or agent to help him get out of a situation if he can get out on his own.”

“I’m surprised! Usually I’m the one supplying the cookies.” He did not seem surprised with her nomination for a promotion, and though he was visibly pleased with the cookies, he seemed far more excited about her request. “Even if I hadn’t been following along with his updates, you’ve given a charming speech. I’d be moved by that alone.” He didn’t speak of Amesite; he didn’t need to. He knew it was a sore spot, an open wound. He’d lost people before. He wasn’t going to dig into that, especially when it wasn’t her fault. So far as he could tell, she had done everything she could. Just like she was doing now. “I understand your desire to see him succeed. I trust you. If you think he’s ready, I believe you. Is he recovered enough from his attack, do you think? If he needs time to recover, we can schedule something. Unless, the cookies were a bribe and you’ve already got him stashed and waiting…?”

Laughing, Cavansite shook her head. “The cookies are not any sort of bribe, his boyfriend made them, and that guy is a wizard at baking. You always share cookies and I wanted to spread the love around! Honestly, there were more but um. Well. They’re very good, Axinite, and. They...I couldn’t help myself and I ate the rest.” That was a detail that she hadn’t planned on telling the General King at all but…
Sometimes things just slipped out. Especially when it was with someone that she honestly considered a mentor, if not a friend.
“He is stashed. He’s in my office, hopefully eating some of the candy I left with him, but he has recovered enough from the attack, yeah. And I’ve been visiting him often to make sure that his mind is recovered. And, I’m pretty sure that it has, mostly. He’s been going off about his boyfriend’s ex more than he has about the a*****e in the top hat so...that’s progress, I think.”
She grinned. “Do you mind if I summon him over here? He knows something’s up, but I didn’t tell him he’d be getting a promotion today.”
She was doing better too, not that she realized it. There was more light in her eyes, and much more life in her smile. The melancholy mood that she had fallen into again after her last meeting with Gently seemed to have finally cleared, and her productivity had almost doubled. It helped that she was going out more. Leaving her office more. Living once more.

Axinite managed a laugh at her confession and he nodded. It wasn't exactly a secret that his baking stemmed from a lack of sleep and a need to be productive, and it was better to share the product of his coping mechanisms than just throw them away. "Please, bring him in. I'm glad to hear that he's doing well. It's good to have enemies, it keeps the mind focused. As long as it doesn't consume you." He reached for a cookie, almost mechanically, and ate it, but in the meantime he busied himself bringing out a few energy drinks to select from. The cookie was devoured, with such care that it didn't seem like he'd dropped a single crumb. He wiped his still gloved hands off on a handkerchief in his desk drawer, anyway. "Mm. Those are delicious. We'll leave a few out to give him that little boost. I know the promotions can be a bit taxing. Do you want to help?" he asked, "Or shall I do it alone, so I can take blame for the bit of discomfort it brings?"

For a moment, Cavansite was a little taken aback by the thought that she could help promote Parisite. It wasn’t something she had planned, but the idea caused a smile to spread across her face. “I would love to help. If you’re fine with that. He. I mean, he was corrupted by me, he knows that to gain more power will cause a little pain. He’ll be fine. Besides...it’ll mean more if it’s coming from me too...ah.”
The smile morphed into a grin and she rubbed the back of her head, closing her eyes for a moment. “I’ll bring him here, then.”
With a flicker of power, Cavansite drew Parisite to her side, placing her hand on his shoulder in a gesture of comfort. “Lieutenant Parisite, this is General King Axinite. Today you are being promoted. And he is here going to assist me in doing so for you.” She sounded so utterly pleased, her eyes warm as they flickered between both younger men. “I’m very proud of you, Parasite. And I want you to be better equipped to defend yourself if you ever find yourself in a situation that becomes too much for you to handle alone.”

It was never not going to be startling to be pulled from one place to another even if you knew it was going to happen. Her hand on his shoulder was something steadying when he could swear it felt like the world needed a moment to catch up to him. But the word… promoted. His mouth opened not unlike a goldfish for the briefest moment before snapping shut again. “T-thanks.” He stammered, not sure what else to say honestly. The warmth in her voice… pride, she was actually, proud of him. And concerned, which was both embarrassing and, nice too. “Thank you.” He repeated, thinking of the man who smelled like cinnamon, and hoped that yes, god yes he would like to be able to handle that better.

Axinite gave the General a moment to speak with her Lieutenant and then said, "It's lovely to meet you, Parisite. General Cavansite has had nothing but good things to say about you. It would be a shame to lose an agent who is go greatly valued, so I am inclined to agree that her desire to see you stronger is well founded. You've been keeping a good record, and I admire that." He had stood and moved to stand before his desk so he could easily make contact with Cavansite's shoulder. "When you're ready," he said, clearly speaking to the both of them, "This will go fast." Power surged through Cavansite, careful and controlled; he had a good grip of what he was doing and it was obvious that he was not new to this. "I can guide you through it, if you like. You just have to reach in, gently hold the starseed, and push a little charge into it. I'll keep an eye on it," he promised. "I'll make sure nothing goes wrong." To Parisite, he assured, "I have snacks here, and an energy drink. I won't lie, this may be uncomfortable. You'll need to rest for tonight, but by tomorrow you should be ready to access your new powers. You'll be stronger," he promised. "Better equipped. Do either of you have any questions before we begin?"

Cavansite grinned, nodding and reaching out for her lieutenant, patting his cheek lightly in obvious affection before she rested her hand against his chest. “He’s right. It’s going to hurt just like when I brought you in to begin with, maybe a little bit more. But...you’ll come out of it stronger. Besides.” She gave a knowing smile and wiggled her eyebrows. “It gives your beau a chance to fuss over you, and I can stay the night and see that you’re okay. And Axenite is always prepared with sweets and things just like he said. This’ll be great. Besides.”
Her voice softened and her hand slid into his chest, fingers gently wrapping around Parisite’s starseed. “You deserve this. I truly am so proud of you, Parasite. You’ve done amazingly well. And I know you’ll keep doing well.”
With the power that Axinite was lending her, she pushed a little more chaos into Parisite’s starseed, working slowly, carefully. She didn’t want anything to happen to him. He was truly one of the best agents she had ever worked with. “Just keep breathing, Parasite. This will be over soon. We’ve got you.”

If he had any questions he wouldn’t have even begun to know what to ask in all honesty. He wasn’t sure what he might have expected from a promotion- because he’d not really considered that he might be given one. Funny feeling it gave him to have even relative strangers acting concerned. He did his best to bear it, but he was human after all, gritting his teeth and trying to pretend it didn’t hurt. No wonder they thought he’d have good reason to be coddled. If he’d given any thought to promotion he might have assumed that it was a bar on his uniform or something- not a repeat of his induction and then some. Breathe - he could handle that at least, right? “I got this...” he tried to assure her, bearing teeth against the sensation. At least this left no new scars.

"Good," Axinite assured, as the power flowed from him and into Cavansite. Everything seemed like it was going smoothly and in situations like this, that was the best to hope for. "You're both doing very well. It'll just be a moment longer of this and then you can relax. I'm proud of you," he said, pushing the last bit of energy she'd need through Canvansite; he squeezed her shoulder reassuringly, eyes on Parisite as he observed and made sure they finished this properly.

Cavansite looked so very pleased as she watched Parisite’s uniform changing, and felt the increase of power. Quietly, when she was sure that the upgrade was complete, she drew her hand out of his chest and held her arms out to steady the newly turned Captain. “There you go, Parasite.” Her own voice was tired, drained down to the dregs. She was proud though. Proud of Parisite, and proud of herself for being trusted to do this.
“Thank you for your assistance, Axinite. Do you think, after we rest a little, you might be able to help me send him back home? I’m sure I could do it, but…” Cavansite hesitated and tugged a small piece of Parisite’s hair. “You might have to have me spend the night if I do. I can get us both back, but I’m not sure I could drag myself back here. If not, that’s fine, ah, If you wouldn’t mind pulling me back here, General King?”
She liked the idea of staying with Yu though. She had fun the last time. It was a warm place to stay.

“I um…” He hesitated, more tired than he would have thought but invigorated too. “I could ask if you could crash at the house.” He offered. “We still don’t have an extra bed right now, but we have the couch.” He offered. “It’s a nice couch…and I’d make dinner.” He offered, rubbing at his shoulder. He glanced down at his uniform, tipping his head at the small changes. He couldn’t claim to understand how it worked, but he did feel…stronger. “I uh… I hope I can live up to this promotion.” He waved at his uniform, offering a sharp-toothed wry grin. “Does this mean I’ve outgrown the crochet hooks?” He added hopefully.

Axinite withdrew his hand, and along with it, the source of the energy. He watched the two of them, watched Cavansite reassure and praise her new Captain. It brought a smile to his face and he nodded approvingly. "Why don't I take both of you back to Destiny City after you've had a moment. Both of you are welcome to these," he returned to behind his desk and presented a few flavors of energy drinks, and the plates of sweets on his desk--both the ones he had baked, and the ones Cavansite had brought. "And if there's anything else I can do for you, I hope you won't hesitate to ask." He smiled at Cavansite--and then Parisite. "That goes for the both of you."
