Quote:
As if the eerie fog isn't enough to deal with, once the sun goes down you must take shelter quickly--or risk the beast of this land. While there is sometimes the sensation of being watched, it worsens when the sun goes down. A shadow can sometimes be seen outside, but if it catches you in the window it will attack. If it senses life in any building, it will batter against the door, scrape against the walls, and clatter at the windows. An overwhelming sensation of dread and fear seems to roll in with the creature. It cannot break into the buildings, but it can damage them--just never enough to get inside. Once a house is damaged, it is not safe to return to unless it is repaired before nightfall. The creature can splinter wood, claw at bricks, and crack or shatter glass. It can wail like a banshee and can linger for moments or hours throughout the night. It is always gone before sunrise.

Varda sighed as she tried to look out of one of the fogged windows again. It was nightfall, she and another Senshi had managed to find a not-damaged house. But that didn't mean that it was safe. The creature seemed to come at night, and she couldn't yet tell if it could tell that there were living things inside of the buildings by hearing or smelling or seeing them, or if it just randomly attacked, but they still weren't out of the clear. They wouldn't be until morning.

"If it were possible, I'd suggest changing our sleep schedules so that we slept through the day so we could be more awake at night. But there's too much we need to do during the day to do that." She said after she had turned around and slumped against the wall underneath the window. She looked at the other Senshi who was now in the building with her. "We can try and take turns sleeping tonight if you want? I'm not opposed to working together." She grinned at the Senshi. "I'm Varda, Dark Mirror of Victory. What about yourself? Might as well get to know each other if we're going to be stuck together for a bit."

“Sidouer,” the white moon senshi picked up a broken chair leg and added it to the pile of scrap wood she was collecting by the hearth. They’d freeze to death if one of them didn’t start a fire soon, these uniforms they were not-so-blessed with were not suited for such cold temperatures. “Senshi of Static,” she added albeit reluctantly.

It was unusual for her to give out information regarding her identity but if push came to shove and that monster got in, it would be wise to know what each other was capable of so there weren’t any disillusions as to who would be doing what in a fight. “I can shock the s**t or blind whatever comes through that door.”

Her stomach growled.

Since her arrival, Sidouer hadn’t taken time to eat anything. Instead she scouted the area as best she could, looking in most nooks and crannies. Making sure there wasn’t a trap door or a hidden cave nearby. To her knowledge, there was none of either but she would have been a fool not to have looked.

The idea of sleeping while a Dark Mirror senshi stood vigil caused her anxiety to spike. However, for all the years she had been patrolling the city, the senshi of Static had never had an issue with anyone from their faction; only corrupts of the Negaverse Agents.

“I don’t mind taking the first watch, it’ll give me time to get a fire started.” She tossed another piece of broken wood onto the pile.

Varda let out a small laugh. "Sounds a bit more useful than my magic. Mine's pretty much an adrenaline boost. Can use it 3 times, but I don't know how useful it would be against such a monster. Maybe if we needed to escape or something." The fog was still there though, and while she hadn't breathed any of it in yet, considering what had happened last time they encountered it, she was sure that it wasn't something that she wanted to get into her lungs anyway.

"Appreciate the volunteering. Just wake me up when you want. Not sure how we would be able to tell how much time has passed anyway, so I guess just whenever you feel like it." There was no moon to watch, the sky was clouded, barely letting any light out at all, and she certainly didn't have any watches on her or even her phone.

She took a look at the fire that the Senshi was trying to build. "We should see if we can gather more wood during the day tomorrow, whether it's for the fireplace or fixing up some of these buildings." She wasn't sure how they were supposed to fix anything up, and considering the small number of buildings, they didn't have too many structures to hide in without needing to fix them.

She moved slowly, making sure not to be too loud, though she still flinched a bit when her boot hit the wood. "Honestly, who even thinks of these uniforms..." She muttered to herself, moving over to the bed that was on the ground. She sighed as she sat on the bed. Uncomfortable, but other than sleeping on the floor, they really had no place to sleep.

The floor was looking better by the minute though.

It was hard to hide the smile when Varda made a comment about their uniforms. “I thought the same thing when I first awakened.” Although it was several years ago she still acutely remembered trying to run in heels for the first time. “As someone who was used to running shoes, these,” she nodded at the golden heels she now wore. “Were quite an adjustment.”

“I’m honestly hoping that come tomorrow everyone can pick a role to help fortify this place so we all make it out of here alive.” A nice idea but she knew well enough that there was always that one dumb person that thinks their the exception and does something they shouldn’t and ends up killed. New Senshi, Knights, or even Negaverse Agents still running on the high of having magic and power, thinking they’re invincible.

“I know quite a bit about growing an edible garden; assuming the food here is like what we have at home, I should know what’s ready to be picked.” But the magical fog made her wary of many things, including the manner in which the vegetables were grown. Normal water, no problem; magically enhanced droplets or mist and rain, that unknown fell outside her knowledge or jurisdiction.

Confident that she had all that she needed, Sidouer filled the hearth with the larger pieces of wood with some smaller broken pieces and tinder. It would be nice if one of them had that magic to produce a flame, but it seemed like they were out of luck in that regard. And so, the Senshi of Static did what Tom Hanks did in the movie Cast Away. She held onto one piece of wood and applied a downward pressure while rubbing it lengthwise along a plank quickly. Thankfully she was powered so it didn’t take much time for the friction to build and a small flame begin to burn.

"I can't tell if it's just because, or if they want to torture us." She smiled back at the Senshi though inwardly she cringed. If they didn't have such amazing healing powers, it would mean that when they got older their feet were going to be awful. Maybe they would have artificial muscle replacements by then?

She couldn't help but chuckle at the Senshi's suggestion. Not that she thought it was a bad idea. "I'd volunteer to go and collect supplies or something, but I think I may just have to forgo the boots for a while. Still, I'd like to help however I can." She really just didn't want to have her foot fail underneath her from the heels if they really needed to run.

"That's quite amazing. More than I know." She said chuckling to the other Senshi. "I might be able to help identify some jewels and metal, but otherwise my only real skills are fighting while on roller skates and BMX biking, so unless this is like a Kid in King Arthur's Court, I don't think we're going to be able to find someone who can make a bike like that." She shook her head. "I'll help fight though, as much as I can against... whatever it is here."

She watched as the Senshi started the fire and then heard her stomach growl. "I'm going to see if I can find some food in here. Hopefully they have some salted meat or... something edible that won't make us sick." She really hoped it was the former and definitely a different type of meat, like ham, and not human.

Rummaging around she managed to find... something that looked edible, and taking a sniff it seemed to be meaty. She brought it over to her roommate. "I don't think it's human meat, so it should be good."

Sidouer blinked back in surprise at the comment Varda made about the meat. To be honest she hadn’t even considered that it might be human; former residents of this village freeze-dried from the fog and left out for the next wave of abductees to snack on.

“Umm,” she hesitated before taking a whiff, “I’ll be honest, I’m not sure I’d be a good judge on identifying what kind of meat it is unless it’s fish or chicken.” Both had a distinct texture to it but red meat was red meat to her; didn’t matter if it was from a cow, pork, or Emu. Not knowing where this selection came from made her hesitant to try cooking, let alone eat it.

“I don’t think anyone has gotten sick from eating anything yet.” That, however, could always change. “If we cook it long enough it should be fine, I think. But at that point, I really don’t want to know what we’re eating.” Or who they were eating for that matter. “Did you happen to find any spices in the cabinets; salt, pepper, or even any dried rosemary by chance?”

"Guess we'll have to try it then." Varda said as she faced her companion and placed a couple of containers down in front of them on the table. "These are what I found. I think they're spices, but I can't be too sure. I don't know what this dimension is and isn't like compared to ours." Sometimes she even wondered if they were truly somewhere else or if they hadn't just been shrunken and put in some miniature place.

"One smells like tumeric though. Maybe they had some inflammation problems? Not sure how well that would go on the meat. I'm sure we can cook anything bad out of it." Or at least she hoped they could. Best to just not think about where it came from, not that it looked human when she took a better look at it. "The other might be pepper. I can try looking in some other cabinets. I'm sure I can find something like dried rosemary or salt." She said, moving again and opening one by one until she thought she saw something and giving a chemical whiff sniff to the container brought it over as well. "This what you're looking for?"

Sidouer accepted the container and brought it to her nose, the contents of which nearly made her sneeze but she was able to press her tongue to the roof of her mouth until the sensation went away. “I think this, and the pepper will be fine. Let’s save the turmeric in case there is a medical need for it.” Unfortunately, Acrucis wasn’t here to help them if anyone got injured and without mingling with the other captives, she wasn’t sure if there was anyone who had the ability to fill that role.

“Tomorrow I can try to make a stew or something with the vegetables outside, but it’s dark enough I don’t want either of us going to get them now.” Confident that the fire wasn’t going to go out the moment she left the room, Sidouer finally rose to her feet and walked into the kitchen where she got a pot of water and then hung it over the open flame to warm.

“I’m just going to re-hydrate the meat then season it then cook it on a skewer,” at that point, it should be well and ready to consume.

“I’ll be honest, I’ve never had the chance to speak to a Dark Mirror Senshi before.” Sidouer paused, her tone rather soft as she held her hands over the open flame. “Can I ask why you chose to join them?”

Varda watched as the other prepared all of the food and couldn't help but smile. "Well, I'm glad that one of us can cook. I'd like to say I can do something, but mostly I just boil things in water and put a sauce on it." It wasn't as though she hadn't wanted to learn, but she really didn't have time to do anything else. And unless one was very skilled, even with simple "10 minute dishes!" one had to go and get the ingredients, then measure them out, then prepare them in the correct way... too much effort for someone who just wanted to eat something the minute she got home.

She raised an eyebrow at the Senshi's question. "It's not like I knew about any of the rest of you." She replied, a smirk forming on her mouth before leaving it. "One of the leaders of the Dark Mirror approached me and I was interested in what he had to say. As exciting as my life is, when someone tells you you're going to be able to use real magic, it's hard not to pass up that opportunity." She said, sitting down again and relaxing against the chair. "I have nothing against Order Senshi, but it's not as though I was asked to join you. The Dark Mirror got me first so here I am." It was as simple as that. It's not as though she had joined with them promising to take over the world or anything.

"I had to go through a mirror. How did you become an Order Senshi? I know there's something to do with... alien cats?"

“That’s… pretty much it, honestly.” Sidouer rolled her shoulder in a dismissive shrug. “A Mauvian senses our potential and gives a flowery speech about this being some duty of ours and throw in the word magic, just as your leader did... At some point after getting over the initial shock of a cat speaking, they do a weird backflip and summon a pen and phone.” She motioned with her hands with a flourish all the while seeming disenchanted by the whole process.

“If I knew then what I knew now, I wouldn’t have bothered with this. Most White Moon Senshi I’ve met are a bit elitist. If they don’t feel you’re up to par with their own skills or share similar viewpoints, they’ll be quick to drop you from a team before you spoil the lot.” It happened with Persephone, not even minutes after their first team meeting did she corrupt. It is less known on if it was done willingly or if she had been captured and force corrupted but the sentiments remained the same. Nobody in the team tried to reconnect, granted she didn’t even have a chance to get everyone’s name before the team crumbled.

It would be nice to believe that had been the only instance, but that was far from the truth. What happened with Phact still left a scar of betrayal that had not yet healed. At least Acrucis wasn’t alone in the abandonment feeling.

“They’re more like recruiters than actual mentors. Aside from sensing my potential as a Senshi and later with my upgrade to Super… they’ve had little involvement and play no leadership role.” It’s unrealistic to rely on Princes or Princesses when there were so few of them and they had no hand in upgrading the pens.

Sidouer hadn’t meant to slip into such a foul mood but her feelings towards how she was conscripted into such a shitshow of a mess were filled with numerous bitter memories. “I’m sorry, I guess I had more to say on it than I thought.” She smoothed out the back of her skirt and took a seat.

Lifting the ladle she stirred the pot absently. “It should be almost done.”

Varda frowned at what had happened to Sidouer. While she knew that the White Moon Senshi weren't as connected as the Dark Mirror, to be that unaccepting of others just because of skill, it was concerning at least. Did they not realize they had to work together to stop the Negaverse? That wouldn't happen if they weren't willing to help each other out.

The cat thing wasn't too much of a surprise though. Varda had to go out and meet a corrupted Mauvian herself after she had been awoken. The only annoying thing about that was how hard they were to find apparently. Eventually it happened though and she had been mostly happy with the Dark Mirror ever since. But some of the feelings that Sidouer felt with the White Moon mirrored her own with the Dark Mirror. "It seems that neither the White Moon or the Dark Mirror tell you a whole lot about anything. Though I think for the Dark Mirror it's because everyone is a bit in the dark rather than not willing to tell other's what's going on or what to do. At least, that's from what I've seen of the group. I can't say that we get along all the time, but I haven't seen anyone judge any others due to skill or lack of experience. The most fighting that I've seen between others is either personal, which hasn't been many, and then feelings towards the White Moon or the Negaverse, both of which have attacked us in the past."

She nodded. "It's okay if you need to vent sometimes. We all do. And you shouldn't be judged for it. It can be frustrating. Of course we all need help in the beginning. So when we don't get that, it can leave a sour taste in our mouths. But I will say that the Dark Mirror doesn't try to leave anyone behind. You may not have seen many of us, but I think that's a combination of survival and neutrality. We don't want our members getting hurt so when we can, we'll help out however we can and we don't encourage them to go and fight fights that they won't win. I think that's more a Negaverse thing though. On neutrality, I know some of our members have a beef with the White Moon and some of the White Moon don't like what we do, but I haven't really heard of any Dark Mirror going out and attacking White Moon or the Negaverse on purpose." She grinned at the other. "Though for me I like battling. But if we can settle on talking I would prefer to do that than fighting someone who clearly doesn't want to do it."

She looked at the pot, leaning over a little to take a sniff. "It's definitely smelling better now." She looked at Sidouer. "I know we aren't exactly on the same side, but feel free to talk with a Dark Mirror sometime. We like talking more than causing conflicts at least." It was sad to hear how little they helped fellow White Moon, but doing anything about that would have to be done later. For now they were stuck in this... place. "We'll get out of here. I know it." She said, almost whispering. "Then you can find where you most belong."

“I hope you’re right…” Sidouer replied, idly stirring the pot a few more times before filling the two bowls with what she hoped was edible soup. None of this was from her garden back home and thus she couldn’t vouch for the growing conditions. A fog-filled area with no sunlight for days was less than ideal, however, she was less than inclined to figure out where the nutrients were coming from then.

It’d be nice to finally belong somewhere… She mused silently to herself. Teams did not often work out in her favor, even securing a patrol partner was hard to find. Doubtful that things would change overnight, she pushed the thoughts of change aside and handed Varda a bow.

“To finding a way out.”
