He hadn’t asked sterling out first, truth be told… he didn’t think he would ever have dared to. There was a distance between them that, he was somehow sure could only be crossed one way.

But… there were things he could do to try and make up for the cesspool of his existence that Sterling had reached into.
So…

He…. had an idea. He had a really foolish idea. But he…hoped.

There were now strings running from the decorative finial that protruded from the ceiling, and a tiny o ring that perhaps once held hanging plants.

From the strings, and…honestly all over the floor, there were scraps of yellow construction paper. Many of them, were shaped like stars. Some of them had far too many points. Some… had a few less, most were lopsided. But the kitchen now… looked like the galaxy of a children’s drawing. It was a start…

He had a small blister on his thumb from trying to cut too many pieces at once. but he just…wanted to get it done before Sterling got home… he wanted a nice surprise, even if it was a foolish one.

A cautious grin crossed Yu’s face, the noise sounded …good? He hoped it was good.

“You… like, stars, right?” He said cautiously. “Your nickname, and uh… Ok they are a lot, tricker to cut out than I originally thought, I should have measured, and I will sweep up.”
He offered, before scrambling for the fridge and setting out one of the -good- bottles of chocolate milk. The tired look on Sterling’s face just…screamed for it, and he’d bought extra, so this was fine and…

He pulled a white cardboard box out of the fridge and set it on the table.

“You… survived?” He said and flipped open the box lid only to huff in exasperation.

The cake, a mirror glaze thing had slid to one side, marring a whole edge of the cake. Otherwise, it was a deep blue, swirled subtly with deep black and pale blue, and, they assured him, edible gold stars. He’d spent so much more on it than he meant to… but…

But they were dating.

And sterling was wonderful.

So sterling deserved good things.

Besides Mirror glaze -looked- delicious, how bad could it be? He was just mad he’d tipped the box.


“Crud…” He cursed.

Ok, yes, yes this had gone over very well. He was smiling, even…grinning into the kiss. The delightful feel of Sterling’s lips pressed to his own, so soft, the smell of him so warm and perfect, a bit like vanilla and strawberries that he thought might be a shampoo, and of course, the rich smell of the chocolate he enjoyed so much that clung to him in the most tantalizing way.

“I didn’t…work that hard, I mean, I bought the cake, I thought you’d prefer it if I didn’t burn the kitchen down.” He teased softly. Even with Sterling’s watchful guidance there was something about making sweets that seemed to slide directly into the realm of disaster somehow.

“So… How would you like to live tonight? I am…at your disposal. Anything to make sure that you don’t just live, that you thrive.” He murmured.

“May I kiss you?” He leaned slightly towards Sterling, biting gently at his own lower lip, eyes for the soft curve of Serling’s own.

“Orrrr, would you like to try the cake first? Chocolate cherry…” He added to clarify the flavor. “Black cherry and Dark chocolate, When I saw it in the window…I thought of you. Didn’t mean to tip it though.”

He did then, pushing up to his toes to really do it justice, pressing his lips to Sterling’s own and dragging his teeth just a little over that perfect lower lip. He stole a second after the first, drinking him in like he was finding his first sip of water after the desert.
His hands on Sterling’s waist was a greedy second.

“You’re at least as sweet as any cake.” He offered, murmuring into the curve of Sterling’s lips.

“And… should I tell you now or later that they make booze that tastes like chocolate milk?” He grinned. “Could be dangerous.”

“I confess to not currently having any, but I will happily go and fetch some if that is what will make you happy.” He said half a purr. “Especially since you’re off tomorrow. Then we can share some and have a boozy, chocolatey evening, and that, combined with claiming your attention tomorrow, sounds like a marvelous idea.”

He laughed just a little wickedly when Sterling declared the blushing to be illegal. “Well, I did warn you I was bad news, didn’t I? Always up to no good, basically wicked.”

"I mean, very little is as good as -that- chocolate milk," Yu admitted. "But it's quite tasty, and it comes in white chocolate too."

His smile was sharp-toothed and delighted. "I would be honored to escort you out for booze and food. As your personal Grim Reaper, and since that makes you 'Life' itself… what a marvelous adventure it will be!"

Sterling tugged him forward, and was he was happy for it. At that moment, he was jealous of Oreo for being able to purr when content properly. It seemed like something that would feel divine at that moment; more than that, it felt like it could convey better than words that warm feeling that Sterling carried with him into any room.
