LOYAL Mattie argues that it is impossible to not be loyal with her family. She is willing to sacrifice herself in order to protect the greater good and bring pride to her country, family, and friends (if she can finally make some).
BUBBLY Mattie is a bundle of energy, full of ideas, dreams, and ambitions to the extreme that she often cannot materialize much of her brilliance. Alas, there is only so much time in the day!
PRIDEFUL Mattie works hard, very hard, to accomplish what she has and she will see someone doubt her work and perseverance over her dead body. She might be clever but that doesn’t mean she has to work harder just to show it on paper.
IMPULSIVE Despite being a part of a family of structure and following orders, given her own freedom she is quick to act on the first great (or “great”) idea she encounters. She lacks the fear to back down from a challenge and that very much includes following her heart before her logic.

EARLY CHILDHOOD
Matilda Rose Harper (Mattie) was the second born, youngest child of Captain Charles Harper and Lieutenant Juliet Harper. Captain C. Harper is a British Army marksmanship instructor and Lieutenant J. Harper a British Army Nurse. Both have served in various muggle war zones and peaceful posts, bringing Mattie and her older brother, Eden, into contact with a variety of locations throughout their childhood. They lived primarily in military housing, but also spent time with Lieutenant J. Harper's family in Cardiff, and in Shropshire countryside where Captain C. Harper had grown up. Mattie loved the heartbeat and diversity of London, but she loved the freedom she had in Shropshire away from the overbearing eyes of her parents.
Mediocrity was unacceptable to Charles and Juliet (Sir and Mum or Ma’am but never Mother), and like Eden, Mattie both feared and respected her parents. Mattie was well liked by the adults in her primary schooling, with her corn silk blonde hair and bright blue eyes, she was the picture of innocence. She was a bright student, but tested “poorly in comparison of what her intelligence actually was.” If she had to go to another tutoring session on test taking skills by the age of eight she was going to scream! Yet, she did continue to go, even after Eden went away to some castle to learn magic, because that is what she should do. It was her duty to her family and her country. She must utilize her skills to their best and beyond.
The truth of the matter is she missed Eden terribly and wrote him almost daily with an owl he’d send for her letters. She hated to admit her big brother was her only friend. She was constantly teased for being a ‘know it all’ and ‘teacher’s pet’ and Mattie would get mad and cry or even get into a fight where she showed it wasn’t just boys who knew how to throw a good punch and quite a bit martial arts (thanks Sir). All she had was school, swimming, tennis, martial arts practice with Captain C. Harper, regular marksmanship instruction most often with an air pistol, tutoring, and letters to Eden.
She was so preoccupied with her loneliness after Eden left and the pressure to always be the best of the best, she never noticed that the bruises on her from a fight would be gone before she got home, and for some reason her parents never seemed to find out about the bullying and fights that would happen. Even when her teachers witnessed the fights and bullying, they seemed to forget about the whole thing the next minute. What Mattie did not realize was these changes in perception and wishing a bruise would just go away in time was just as paranormal as the explosions around Eden.
She almost refused the connection even when the same man that revealed Eden to be a wizard came to meet the Harpers one more time. Mattie was a witch. She doubted she ever did magic till the man said “Are you sure nothing odd has happened around you in particular” at least not revealing how magic helped make her and her parents disagreements (the time Mattie refused to go to tutoring because she was still recovering from laryngitis for example) a little more bearable. She was just happy she could join her brother away from her parents. She’d learn slight of hand card tricks if she had to just to have a moment to breathe.
