Khrisma clicked her heels as she walked down the path, giant evergreens looming over her and casting deep shadows the further she walked, but she did not seem fazed or nervous at all. And in fact, she wasn't - her disposition was generally cheerful, her innocence lending itself well to lightening her mood again quickly anytime something scary or upsetting happened. Her memory for everything was short, and literally not being able to hold onto the bad things meant that she still held a childlike joy in her heart, and always would. It also meant she rarely learned her lesson about any mistake, but she often made up for it by being sincere in apologies and trying so hard to make up for transgressions.

The forest grew thicker and thicker around her as she traveled deeper and the smell of the loamy earth beneath her hooves mixed with the sharp brightness of pine needles made her giddy and contented. The only place she felt more at home than a lush forest was climbing steep rocky outcroppings with a chilly breeze that smelled like frost blowing around her. But winter was coming and it was so much more fun in a forest - the snow got deeper and it was warmer beneath the trees, everything more insulated and cozy. Her most favorite time of year, by far! She didn't know exactly where in this forest she would decide to spend her winter but she was sure somewhere would be perfectly suitable as long as she kept searching. [254 wds]

Annushka was alone, again. She was usually alone. For a little bit, she had company in the form of a wolf-horse. She wasn't sure what else to have called him. He spent most of his time as a wolf, communicating silently with her as she was with him. How weird it must have looked to others spying on them, a wolf and a horse in mutual companionship.

But he was gone, his dark wolf's pelt having long ago blended into the surroundings. She didn't suppose he'd be back. At least not for as long as he was when he first appeared. He was running from something. Or more likely someone, as she'd smelled another scent similar to hers on the day he left. This second wolf didn't bother her, but made a beeline straight for her companion. Then he'd vanished. And she was alone, again.

It wasn't so bad, being alone. She enjoyed solitude. Just her thoughts and the sounds of the forest. It was easier to think in the forest. Nearby there was a meadow, where the animals liked to congregate in an unspoken truce between prey and predator. She found it hard to understand how they could be in each other's company under the knowledge someone might be a next meal tomorrow. Torrhen only ever ate plants.

Annushka started to turn, walking away from the meadow when a movement caught her eye. There was another Star in the forest, a paler one than she. Her own fur was colored like the trunks of the trees behind her, making her blend in a bit better with the natural browns and greens of the forest she called home. But not completely. If one were to look in her direction, they would see her. Did she want to be seen? Her body shifted as she moved a single hoof forward and back, racked by indecision. Just because Torrhen had been a nice soul, didn't mean everyone who came into the forest had good intentions.

A snapping twig near her made the decision for her as a fox scampered away after a rabbit.

Khrisma slowed as she felt eyes watching her. She looked around casually, trying to identify where the gaze was coming from, but she could not. Perhaps her mind was playing tricks on her and telling her this was not the place to stay and rest and make a home? But it was far more likely that her subconscious was right and so she stayed alert. She didn't feel like there was *danger* so much as just a sense of being observed but if it weren't a warning not to stay here then what was it she knew but hadn't realized yet? Hmm. Something to consider as she kept moving.

But just as she'd decided to move on and keep searching, a twig snapped off to one side, and Khrisma swung her head to look directly at its source. And there in the shadows, barely visible only if you knew where to look, stood a Star with lovely antlers and a coat the color of the thick-barked trunks all around them. Ahhh, so she wasn't wrong after all! She took a moment to consider what to do now that they'd plainly seen each other, then grinned and started bounding through the piles of late autumn leaves in the direction of the stranger. If the Star was dangerous, Khrisma tended to be more fleet-footed than most and was not overly concerned for her safety. Might as well try to make a friend. Or an acquaintance, at the very least...but a friend was preferable. Spending a winter with company was always nicer than spending a winter alone!
