Eliot sighed as he wandered around the city. Another day, another long set of hours of just trying to survive. He'd already been in the library for what felt like too long that morning; the last thing he needed was to get chased out, so he was back to wandering until he could justify going back, or maybe finding out if there was more than one library in this city he could cycle going to.

Eventually, though, he grew too tired of walking around and tucked himself into the corner of an alleyway, sipping at one of his refilled water bottles and wishing for some greater relief from this ungodly heat.

That last fight had Sylvite feeling all shaken up inside. Like, she'd been in the Negaverse for years and she'd figured out pretty early on just how nasty war could be, but it had been awhile since her life had been quite so on the line.

She'd lived, so it was fine.

Or maybe it wasn't fine, but she wasn't gonna think about that. She was gonna think about the fact that she'd done her soldier duty which meant she deserved to have a little fun. She'd been working so hard, lately, too. She'd been getting her energy and working on the database and doing all her paperwork like she was supposed to. It had been forever since she'd powered up just to have fun with it. Well, today was gonna be that day.

She spent awhile at the park, doing flips off the swing set until families started showing up and she had to move on. She started climbing on buildings after that, trying to figure out how many stories she could jump at once and feeling the wind in her face as she left from roof to roof.

At one point, she flung herself off a roof and did a triple flip down into the alleyway below. It wasn't her best, but she did stick the landing, and she looked up with a grin only to find out that someone was already there. Oh.

Eliot startled as the person dropped down in the alley beside him, squeezing his water bottle in shock, splashing it all over himself and choking on it. He coughed and wheezed, thumping his fist on his chest to help him clear his lungs. ********, that burned.

"Uh, hi?" he said once he could breathe a little easier, coughing a bit again and lifting his free hand in a lame wave. "Nice parkour?"

Sylvite was sucked out of the moment of savoring her awesome, dramatic landing by the sound of someone having a coughing fit nearby. She blinked.

Then, she looked around the alleyway, which didn't take long. The guy coughing was so tall that he was hard to miss. She took a step towards him, her brows coming together so hard that her nose wrinkled. "Crap, I didn't think anyone was gonna be down here," she said. "Are you okay?" She talked fast, but there was real concern in her voice.

He didn't look like he was dying, so that was good for him, and he didn't feel like he was magical, which was probably good for her.

"Also thanks and hi," she added with a little wave.

Eliot coughed once more and cleared his throat, taking a fresh ship of water. Okay, he felt okay now.

"Yeah, I'm fine," he said a bit gruffly, "What about you? That was some crazy s**t you just did. Aren't your ankles and knees a little upset with ya?"

Sylvite looked down at her own legs just to make sure nothing was like, popped out of place that she hadn't noticed. She'd had plenty of trips and sprains and stuff, even powered up when she started testing the limits, but she hadn't been doing anything too over the top today and everything seemed fine.

"Yeah, I'm good!" she said, popping back up to her full height with a grin. "I'm magic, so that helps a lot."

It wasn't necessarily her job to show off how cool the Negaverse was, but she was always up for trying!

"Magic?" Eliot repeated disbelievingly, raising his eyebrows. "Right, sure, magic is real. And I'm Harry Freakin' Potter."

He shook his head, screwing the lid back onto his water bottle. "Superhuman joints are usually an indicator of a joint problem, y'know."

Sylvite's grin turned into a smug little smirk. "I mean, I think technically I'd be Harry Potter," she said. "Or, like, a wizard. Probably not Harry."

He wasn't wrong about her joints. They'd started to get messed up from her years of cheer, but she didn't really wanna talk about medical stuff, not when she could talk about magic. It was fun to watch the faces he was making, at least when he wasn't choking on his water. Maybe she should try to talk to civilians more often.

She squeezed her eyes shut, and with a dark flash, she teleported to a second-floor fire escape that was partway down the alley. She waved at him, just in case he'd missed it. "I think I'd be a Hufflepuff," she said.

Eliot's eyes nearly bugged out of his head. He was thankful he'd already put his water away instead of drinking more, because he'd surely be spitting it out again, and that was something he really couldn't afford to do.

"Holy s**t," he said disconcertedly. "I'd be... a Slytherin?"

He didn't quite know how to react to this, so he just... attempted to continue the conversation.

Sylvite nodded, definitely still grinning and eating up the fact that he seemed so blown away by her powers.

"Nice to meet you, Mister Slytherin," she said, and hopped back down to ground level. That wasn't quite as flashy, but it was definitely something that would've hurt a little bit under normal circumstances, and but it didn't seem to bother her at all.

"It's not quite like Harry Potter, though, where you gotta be born with your powers," she said, since she was this far in and might as well give the whole spiel. They were always recruiting, right?

"You can, like, receive them."

"Receive them?" he repeated, eyebrows lifting in interest. He sat up a little straighter, too. "Like... How, exactly? Should I be worried about magical MLM schemes?"

The corner of his mouth lifted slightly as he joked. "What requirements do you look out for?"

"I don't think it's an MLM," she said, walking down the alleyway and plopping down cross-legged a few feet away from him.

"There's no money stuff. There is an organization, but it's more about protecting people. Like, uh, SHIELD?" She chewed her lip for a second, then shook her head. "I mean, kinda. It gets too complicated for the fictional metaphors to really hold up."

She looked him over, more carefully this time. He'd startled earlier, but now he seemed to be taking things in stride pretty well. "But we like all kinds of people. Smart people, charming people, brave people. Why?" She tilted her head. "You got any hidden talents I should know about?"

Eliot frowned a little as he thought it over, staring at the ground.

"Well," he said slowly, "I notice things. I'm pretty observant. You have to be, to be a photographer. I'm not sure I'm very unnoticeable myself, though—Being a little over six feet tall gets you noticed."

He inhaled slowly. "But what would I have to do, if I... qualified?"

Sylvite wasn't always super patient, but she waited while he thought things over.

Then, at the word observant, she grinned. Yeah, she'd been serious before. There was room for all sorts of talents in the Negaverse, but her specialty, the thing that she was most interested in getting more people interested in? Yeah, that was gathering information.

"Observant is good," she said. "Really good, actually, and I don't think you'd need to like, hide too much."

She summoned her communication tablet and tapped at the screen. "So, I'm not actually the one who does recruitment, but I could get your contact information and put in a good word with you with one of the people who does?"

Eliot's heart was making a valiant effort to burst out of his chest. Something about this felt like the very precipice of a Very Big Decision. This felt like how he'd felt while packing his bags to run away from home. Nervous and excited all at once, stomach swooping around like he was on a roller coaster.

Everything felt like he was just about to start a very important chapter in the book of his life.

He loved it.

"Yeah," he said, matching her grin and pulling out his phone, eyes going slightly wide as he looked at her tablet. Wow. Futuristic and cool. Ooh, and purple-y.

He checked his number in his phone and read it to her, free hand tapping at his thigh to shake out some of the nervous energy.
