“Are you ready?” Chrysanthe glanced back towards the younger hybrid. She was finishing putting supplies into the small travel bag and was waiting on Nasrin to finish putting together her own belongings. The girl had asked Chrysanthe to escort her back to her village in lower Belrea which required crossing a mountain path to the south of the city. Chrysanthe’s boss had encouraged her to go and take a week or so for a vacation since it was so near the ocean. A good chance to get some fresh air and explore more of Belrea since you’ve been cooped up in this city for the past three years. After some more pleading from Nasrin followed by other encouragements Chrysanthe had finally caved and agreed to go. It would be nice to see more of Belrea after all, right?

“Just a few more things.” Nasrin grinned playfully as she peeked back towards Chrysanthe. The girl was buzzing with excitement and was thankful that Chrysanthe had agreed to be her escort. It saved her father another trip to the city and had allowed Nasrin more time to shop and explore the fancier shops that weren’t quite the same in her little home village to the south. They had a bunch of flowers but not quite so many stores and cafes. Chrysanthe’s cafe was one of the best in Nasrin’s humble opinion and she was glad that the owner had given them a basket of pastries and bread for the trip home. Hopefully some last so I can share with mama and papa. She was glad that she was getting to do this and that she had met Chrysanthe at the festival. Despite her rough exterior, Chrysanthe was extremely kind to her and Nasrin saw her as a bigger sister of sorts. “Thank you again for coming with me.” She chirped as she finished typing the strings on her satchel bag. “I think I’m ready now.”

Chrysanthe chuckled as she watched Nasrin placing everything together in the small satchel. “I’m surprised you managed to fit all of your things in just those two bags.” One was secured to the girl’s back and the smaller one’s strap rested against her shoulder. Her baked goods and gifts from the shops fit into the smaller bag while any clothing she picked up, including those she had come to the city with were in the back satchel.

“You would be surprised with my packing skills!” Nasrin replied with a giggle. “My family always was on the move when I was growing up so we learned to travel light but with plenty of essentials at the same time. It was a complicated packing process for sure.” She shifted her supplies before gesturing towards the doorway. “You’re ready, right?” She was eager to go and it was obvious in her excited expression and how she bounced in place by the entrance.

“Would I have asked if I wasn’t?” Quipped back Chrysanthe lightly. “It’s interesting to see how your family traveled so much. Strange to think that you were in Tendaji at one point before coming back here to live.” Just thinking of Tendaji made her nostalgic for her homeland. The main continent hadn’t always given her the best of memories but she did have some family whom she deeply cherished living overseas. Chrysanthe sent letters on rare occasions to her family to let them know that she was indeed alive and doing well. No one truly knew her location because of her fear that her mother would try to drag her back home but at least she did send notes that she was doing well and hoped the same for them.
“Alright.” Chrysanthe broke from her thoughts to walk past Nasrin so that she could lead the way. “It’s a longer walk but I enjoy the mountain paths.” She had gathered herbs there for recipes before and took a few days on occasion to enjoy the mountain air whenever she needed a break from the city. She had a simple backpack herself with just a satchel of necessities and a flask of water hanging from her side. Nasrin definitely had more but Chrysanthe was determined to keep an eye out and help the younger girl whenever necessary.

“I’m alright with a longer walk.” Nasrin replied happily as she skipped behind Chrysanthe through the city streets. “Usually we ride with a caravan or something but walking is exciting!” She glanced about as they walked through the streets and she even grabbed a steamed bun from a vendor. Popping it into her mouth, Nasrin offered a second one to Chrysanthe as they walked along. She was content to simply chew on the food while they started their journey and they walked mostly in silence until they finally arrived at the mountains an hour later.

Chrysanthe smiled at Nasrin’s reaction. “Nice, right? The view is even prettier whenever we get up the trail further.” They had gone through the city and now a rockier path greeted them. The mountains were majestic with their silvery green evergreens and the other trees that were changing into even more vibrant colors in preparation for fall. They stretched up far into the skies and marked the beginning of southern Belrea where a lot of the farming communities thrived. They were only at the base and would have quite a walk ahead of them before leaving the mountains and emerging towards miles upon miles of fields.
“Oh but look.” Chrysanthe gestured towards the path. “Looks like we aren’t alone today.”

Nasrin nodded. “It really is lovely. I always enjoyed seeing them when we traveled but I never got to see them so close.” It was nice being able to walk through the mountains themselves. There was even a nice breeze and Nasrin enjoyed how it ruffled her curls. Her gaze was fixated on the trees but whenever Chrysanthe pointed further up the path she found herself glancing forward. “Oh!” A small gasp of surprise left her lips as she stared at the little animals gathered around the lower mountain area. They were cute with subtle coat patterns in mostly creams and browns and some even had spiraled horns! “Lyari?” She asked with surprise. “I suppose it makes sense though considering we are in the mountains.”

“Yep.” Chrysanthe smiled before digging into her bag. “They’re usually pretty tame around here.” She brought out some dried fruits. “Want to try and see if we can get some to come closer?” It would give them a little break and they could have some lunch maybe even.

“Sure!” Nasrin reached out and took some of the fruit from Chrysanthe. “How do we go about this?” She asked with a small smile. Would the lyari actually approach them? They were so cute and small that she worried that they would scare easily.

“Well we just approach quietly and sit down and see if they’ll come to get the fruit from our hands.” Chrysanthe started to slowly approach the lyari and sat down on a lone rock that had smoothed over the years after falling from the mountainside. She sat quietly and held out the fruit towards one of the lyari as it slowly started to approach them.

Nodding, Nasrin quietly followed Chrysanthe and sat down next to her. The girl’s gaze widened with surprise when a pair of lyari actually started coming their way. Wow! She mused as she waited there with her hands holding out pieces of fruit. Once the first one came towards her it carefully started to nibble at the fruit and Nasrin had to hold back her laughter. It tickled!

“There, there.” Chrysanthe waited a few moments to let the lyari get more comfortable around them and continued to offer fruit and even some bread to the creatures. “Good girl.” She smiled as she reached out and patted the side of a cream colored one with short brown nubs. “Not so bad, right?” She looked towards Nasrin with a soft laugh. “We’ll stay here for a bit and then continue on our way.”

“Sounds good to me.” Replied Nasrin with a small smile of her own. She was more tentative about reaching out to touch the sides of the lyari but once Chrysanthe seemed comfortable doing so she eventually tried. A soft gasp left her lips at the surprising softness of the fur and she found herself giving the lyari scratches. It seemed happy enough and even nudged her hand for more food once the fruit was gone. How cute. Nasrin grinned towards Chrysanthe. She definitely was glad that they had decided to travel like this! What a fun day indeed!
