Music wafted through the evening air of the city. The flickering lights of the lamps blended in with the colorful globes which were hanging throughout the streets for the festival. While others were bouncing about with excitement and prepared to enjoy the festivities, Chrysanthe found herself carrying several large bags of baked goods towards one of the stalls lining the edges of the central park. “Here.” Huffing, she tossed the baked goods onto the center of the stall where a rather plump geian woman started to quickly organize and sort through them. “Need anything else?” Chrysanthe asked as she leaned against the wooden frame, her curly hair wild and frizzy from the humidity in the air and her corset feeling a tad bit too tight after the run from the edge of the city to the main square.

“Nope I’m good.” Tyri chuckled at Chrysanthe’s frizzled appearance. “Looks like you could take a break though. Why not enjoy the festivities while I set up? I think we can handle it from here. You did most of the hard work by bringing everything and setting up the stall earlier today.”

“Sounds like a great idea.” Replied Chrysanthe after a moment. “I think...I think I’ll do just that.” Stealing a steamed bun for herself the hybrid girl gave a wave before heading further into the park to check out what the summer festival had to offer.

Nasrin loved whenever her family visited the city. The hybrid girl bounced with excitement, her country roots showing as she darted between all the fancier looking buildings and stalls. “Oh this is nice!” She chirped as she fiddled with one of the gadgets at a smithy’s stall. Her childhood had been spent mostly in Tendaji and the technology of Belrea still amazed her. Her home in Belrea was still fairly simple save for the labs and greenhouses reserved for botanical studies. Open fields full of flowers by the ocean offered fresh country air while this place was just full of tall buildings and all sorts of interesting things!

However, her gaze was quickly riveted towards something totally unexpected. In the sea of Belreans she spotted a golden blur. Someone who didn’t exactly fit in and definitely caught Nasrin’s attention, especially with those familiar finned ears. “Oh! Excuse me, miss!” Nasrin dodged around some younglings so that she could reach out and tap the older earthling’s shoulder. “Hi there!”

“Hmm?” Chrysanthe couldn’t help the surprise that crossed her expression as she realized that it was not simply a geian girl standing before her. Those ears...Matori? Her brow furrowed in confusion as she studied the younger girl. Out of all the things to see in the city...Chrysanthe quickly shook her head before forcing a small smile. “Yes?” What did the other girl even want with her? She definitely hadn’t run into someone like this before. How could she forget anyone with Matori blood living in Belrea?

“Ah.” Nasrin found her cheeks darkening with a flush. She hadn’t really thought about why she reached out towards the golden girl but yet here they were. She figured she may as well be honest with the stranger and so with a small smile she confessed. “I’m sorry but I got so interested once I noticed that you had some Matori blood like me. Though you don’t look like you have any Belrean blood…” She bit her bottom lip sheepishly. “I’m sorry to bother you but I just thought it was cool to meet someone else kinda like me. My name’s Nasrin by the way!”

Rather than being offended, Chrysanthe just found herself giving a soft chuckle. “So I see. My name is Chrysanthe and you’re correct, I don’t have Belrean blood. I came from Sauti to stay here.” She shrugged her shoulders. “I suppose I would be surprised as well to find someone else with Matorian blood all the way over here.” Her golden gaze studied the girl thoughtfully before she found herself asking. “Are you local or just coming in to enjoy the festival with your...family?” Surely the girl had a family, right?

Nasrin couldn’t help but to beam at the other girl’s response. “So I was right! You’re too golden for anyone I know! Which isn’t bad by the way because you’re really pretty and almost like a beam of sunlight….” She grinned before nodding at the question. “We live in the south along the coast but came up for the festival. Momma and Papa are working on some things with friends and so I’m roaming to pass the time.”

“What about you? Are you here by yourself?”

A flush decorated her cheeks at the compliment and Chrysanthe found herself simply nodding. It was nice of the girl to think so and despite her own self-hatred from her earlier years she was finding that perhaps she truly was pretty with her unique characteristics. Living in Belrea had broadened her horizons and taught her all sorts of love after all.

Relief filled Chrysanthe’s chest. At least the girl had family then and seemed happy enough. The trauma of her own childhood seemed to still linger on occasion and seeing another Matori hybrid had brought some of it to light. Belrea isn’t Sauti and this isn’t twenty years ago. She had to remind herself firmly before the next question caused her to stumble again. “Ah. I am.” She confessed with a small, forced smile. “I live above a cafe in the city and came to help them set up their stall. Now I’m just roaming to see what the festival has to offer.”

“Gotcha.” Nasrin nodded and didn’t bother to linger on the question of family. If Chrysanthe didn’t want to talk about it then she wouldn’t push her. It wasn’t like she was a child either so she figured that the adult was just living her own life by now. “Well if you’re just roaming the festival would you like to have company?” She asked with a grin. “I was just roaming about as well and it would be nice to have someone with me.”

Chrysanthe paused before finally nodding. “Sure. Do you know what you would like to do?” She glanced about and studied the stalls. They were currently along an area full of food stalls and the warm scents tickled her nose. After years of living here she had gotten accustomed to Belrean fare and the smells of the meat pies and bread made her stomach rumble. Perhaps that would be a good place to start? Just the one bun from earlier simply hadn’t been enough to quelch her appetite.

Following Chrysanthe’s gaze, Nasrin found herself laughing. “So food then?” She questioned as she reached out and grabbed the other hybrid’s hand. “I am pretty hungry and there’s all sorts of unique foods here.” Since it was the summer festival a lot of the summer fruits had been on display and certain stalls had pastries and other similar things that could usually only be found during this season. Spotting her family berry tarts, Nasrin quickly handed over a coin to a vendor and popped one of the delicacies in her mouth. “Mmmm.”

“Okay then.” Chrysanthe let out a chuckle as she allowed the prentice to drag her towards one of the food stalls. While Nasrin devoured a sweet, Chrysanthe chose something a bit heartier for herself. She hadn’t really gotten much of a chance to eat today and so the meat pie was definitely welcomed. The pie crust melted in her mouth and she found herself giving a slight moan of happiness as the food settled in her stomach. “That was really good.” She complimented the vendor before picking up another and glancing towards Nasrin. “Anything else or should we move along?”

How she ended up watching over the younger hybrid, Chrysanthe didn’t know but she couldn’t help the bloom of kindness that spread in her chest at the sight of the girl happily snacking on some sweets. Two different worlds and two different experiences. She mused before shaking her head to clear it of the past. What mattered now was that she was in Belrea and happy. This was her home now.

Wiping the edges of her mouth free of crumbs, Nasrin pursed her lips thoughtfully. What could they do next? “I’m not certain.” She admitted after a moment. “I’m not that good at games and I probably shouldn’t spend too much money….though some of those trinkets look really lovely. Did you see some of the glass orbs made specifically for the festival? The stars are so pretty and represent the constellations that are currently in our skies.” The Academy had published wonderful star charts and Nasrin found herself constantly enamoured by the changing skies. Who knew why the gods rearranged the stars but they definitely were lovely.

“I did see them.” Replied Chrysanthe as she started walking along the festival stalls. “Perhaps it wouldn’t be so bad to get one thing, right?” She commented as she studied one of the globes that Nasrin had pointed out. They truly were pretty. Her fingers traced the stars etched into the glass, their shimmering forms highlighted by the lamplight. “Here. How about this? I’ll get you one in memory of tonight as a meeting present.” Without waiting for an answer Chrysanthe gave the merchant some coin and waited for him to wrap the gift. Handing the box to Nasrin she smiled. “Now that we’ve gotten a trinket for you we can head towards the center where the bonfire should be.” They would be lighting it shortly and Chrysanthe assumed that the girl’s parents would be waiting there. The last thing she wanted to do was to have them worry about their daughter.

At least it was nice to have company for a time. They could enjoy the bonfire together and once Chrysanthe saw her safely with her family the hybrid would head back towards the cafe’s stall and help them for the rest of the night.

“Th-thank you!” Nasrin beamed at Chrysanthe and clutched the gift tightly against her chest. How nice! I’ll have to remember to get her something later one as a thank you. Perhaps some flowers? They had some golden lilies at home that reminded her of Chrysanthe. Maybe she would love those? I can make her a beautiful bouquet and deliver them to her cafe later before we leave the city. Happy with her idea, Nasrin followed Chrysanthe so that they could enjoy the festival’s bonfire before parting ways for the night.
