Mine was lounging near the edge of the oasis, waiting for a trade caravan to return. The one that Tahmid belonged to, to be more specific. He usually returned around this time. Say what you wanted about the stallion, but at least he was punctual in his job. And he carried back the best gossip, the only form of entertainment she had out here! She wasn't interested in him as anything else but a source of information. Oh, he'd tried to hit on her a few times, as he did with all the mares. If he expected her to giggle and toss her hair or look bashful about it, he would be disappointed. Mina had been trained well back home on how to behave in public. How to handle just about every situation. She knew how to handle him. Just about anyone, really. He was an easy one. Since he wasn't pushy about anything, you just played along. Maybe flirted a little back, enough to make him comfortable. She wouldn't say he was a friend, but he was one of the few here who could give her some form of entertainment. She rather looked forward to his visits. At this point, she'd even be glad of a call to return home, even if it meant a marriage to someone else her family had picked. Anything was better than this boring life she'd been leading for years. Why hadn't they called her back? She'd been here so long and nothing had happened. No one had any news of back home to give a reason. More and more, she was becoming convinced something had happened and there was just no one available who was able to get word to her.

The mare blew sharply out of her nostrils. Someone could at least send word to someone else who could make the journey. It was quite ridiculous she was so in the dark about what was going on back home! It was like they didn't want her. Even that quiet grey mare from afar had been brought back home. She had also failed at her task. No one seemed too disappointed about it. Mina had never tried to talk to her, didn't feel the need to be friendly with her. She was so quiet, so kept to herself, Mina could only see it as being a pointless excursion. If she wanted to be bored, she didn't need someone else with her to do it. Couldn't even remember her name. She'd heard she'd been called back to the herd for another purpose. To be married off to enrich her family, no doubt. What else use was there for females in the higher class?

Mina blew out of her nose once more, growing impatient waiting for the caravan. Tahmid was here so little, she needed her gossip! As she stared deep into the desert, a figure began to form in the distance. It was not the color of the caravan Stars, so she ignored it. Probably just her eyes seeing things, as was common in the desert when you wanted something so badly.
