Wild Encounter

Solo or RP Format
Counts as 5 RP growth Points
Solo word minimum is 750, RP post minimum is 7

Prompt
Tendaji is filled with a wide array of wildlife, some friendly and some a bit dangerous. It's rare that an inhabitant of the world will spend a day without encountering a wild creature in passing, be it from hunting, traveling, or even taking care of a pet. The creatures of this world only seem to add to the colorful experiences that Earthlings, Aishans, and Kahikinans have each and every day.

[ For this prompt, we want you to pick one (or more) fauna in Tendaji and have your character encounter them in some way. Maybe it's catching a new pet, or animal watching, or maybe it's a hunting trip. Take some time to explore the flora and fauna thread and create a story around your character's experience with the creature(s). ]

The seasons had changed since their first, auspicious meeting up in that tree, and Oduin's family was back in town to take advantage of the harvests and the work opportunities that afforded them.

This time, however, Oduin had better ideas. In the year since, he'd made some good money hauling lumber up in Mez. He'd grown out his hair. He'd finally picked a profession and undergone training and gotten some jobs. With some money saved up, there wasn't as much need to spend the entire harvest season working.

So instead, he'd hatched a plot, and his eagerness to share said plot was evident in the way he'd rushed on over to Ejskoia's place and was now pounding on the door with alarming enthusiasm. She probably wasn't expecting him, probably didn't even know he was back in town. But that was all irrelevant. Right now he had a plan.

To say she wasn't expecting him would be fairly accurate. Ejskoia was lounging at home and enjoying her down time, which she had a surprising amount of, when she heard someone start pounding on the door. She blinked, her aqua eyes going wide with a few blinks and then going to the side. Who could that be?

She rolled off her small bed and then made her way down the ladder from the loft so that she could head for the door. It couldn't be one of her brothers since they would have just let themselves in. "Aright, alright! No need to break the door down. It didn't do anything." She called out.

When the blonde got to the door she didn't need to undo any latches or locks so it was a quick pull to open. When she did she looked out at who it was, expecting a stranger. What she saw was Oduin. Or... she was sure it was Oduin. If she was wrong then she could apologize after. Right that second she gave a half squeal and threw her arms around her friend in a big hug while she grinned from ear to ear.

In hindsight, maybe he should have hollered at her to give her a little bit for forewarning. He always forgot that the hair and the beard could throw people off, but he only had a split second of hesitation before Ejskoia recognized him and threw herself into a hug. Oduin beamed and wrapped his arms around her.

"So, I'm back!" he said declared as he straightened up. He had a sword strapped to his back as well, and he gestured to it along with his face. "New year, new me, I guess. My mother tells me I look the part of a homeless vagrant. But in the best possible way"

He threw his head back in laughter. How that could be positive, he wasn't sure, but his mother managed to turn an insult into a compliment, and he loved the woman for it.

"How are you? What are you up?" His eyes twinkled as he all but rushed through the catching-up part. He had better news and he was doing a poor job of hiding the fact that he wanted to blurt it out.

Hopefully both she and her brothers would be on board.

She supposed her guess was right! Ejskoia pulled away from him, one hand remaining on his shoulder as she looked at him. Her eyes went to his hair and beard before she giggled and nodded. "New you indeed! It looks good on you. So manly!" The hand on his shoulder moved to ruffle his hair playfully before coming away.

Being asked how she was made her look back inside before shrugging and returning her gaze to Oduin. "Same old. Trying to get up the strength to work my own bow. I'm not allowed to do any solo hunts until I can fix a broken string and all that." Her brothers weren't home to confirm that of course. She noticed the rush and twinkle so she tilted her head a little suspiciously to the side. "What is it?" It had to be good otherwise his mood would be different, right?

"Thanks!" he said, thumbing the beard. "I like it. Helps keep me warm in the wind, too." It had come in nice and thick, for which Oduin was terribly grateful.

He nodded along, sympathetically. "Looks like you're getting there, though," he said. Her brothers seemed rather protective, which might be the one hitch in Oduin's plan... But they'd cross that bridge when they got there. He still needed to convince Ejskoia.

"Okay, well, I have an idea. And hear me out," he said, raising his brow excitedly. "What do you think about going to Tale... and finding some Kinfa feathers?" A lot of the logistics, he had thought through already - how to afford it, how they would get there. There were some commonly-used routes between settlements in Sauti, and then getting into Tale was a simple caravan ride away. It wouldn't be hard. All he needed was a yes.

She chuckled as he spoke about his beard rather fondly. Ejakoia had to roll her eyes at him for the vanity but that was all she did. He deserved to be proud of his looks. Her friend looked amazingly good and would be a good catch for anyone. "Eh, its a bit harder than it looks. My brothers always fixed them for me and I used to use a small children's bow.." Now she had a larger one for adults and the tension was harder. She did not have the muscles for it yet.

When he said he had an idea and to hear him out both brows lifted with some curiosity. "Oh..?" Was it something about her skills then? Oduin started speaking and she quickly discovered the idea he had and that she liked it. Before he finished she was nodding her head. "I'm in." Ejskoia quickly said. "When do we leave?" She was craving some adventure anyways!

"We'll put you on a weight-training regimen," he said, only half joking. Oduin himself had (obviously) a fondness for lifting heavy things, and would readily preach the virtues of lifting to anyone who would listen.

"Oh, that was easier than I thought it might be," he said with a relieved laugh. Part of him had expected more hesitation and more resistance. But this made things easy. "We could leave tomorrow, if you wanted to. I've got a lot of the logistics figured out. Basically all you need to do is... pack." He tilted his gaze upward in thought for a moment. "Yep. Just need clothes."

Although he didn't have any sort of map, he could remember the rough landmarks off the top of his head. "If we hitch a ride out west toward Tind, we can then switch into a caravan to Vers, where we can find Kinfa breeders. Or ask for pointers on where to spot them in the wild."

The comment of weight-training made her give him a rather sarcastic look. Ejskoia was a fairly laid back girl, doing constant physical activity looked more like a chore than fun. So she shook her head with a cringe at that.

Back to the topic of the trip she grinned at him. "You don't have to tell me twice. I want those feathers!" It would be terribly easy to bribe her into things. When he said they could leave the next day she deflated a little but nodded at him. "Alright I'll pack some things and meet you tomorrow." Ejskoia's brothers were due back tomorrow but if she left them a note and left before they got back then they wouldn't be able to nay say or stop her. So Oduin would likely see his friend bright and early.

That just left her with the small problem of figuring out what to pack.

The next morning, bright and early, he met Ejskoia back at her place. He'd brought his usual travel pack, loaded with clothes and emergency food supplies. It was just in case they had to stop somewhere and couldn't find any merchants to barter with.

"You ready?" he said, grinning. "It'll take us maybe three or four days to get there, I think, but not a hard trek or anything."

Plus, it'd all be worth it for those feathers.

A note had been left for her brothers and she was waiting outside for Oduin the next morning. Ejskoia smiled at him and nodded her head as she half lifted her pack off her shoulder to show she had packed. She had clothes, some food as well, and a bit of spending money that she'd saved up.

"Works for me!" She was already more well prepared for this trip that she had been for any trip she'd taken to Zena.

Moving forward she linked her arm with his and started to walk away from her home. The faster they left the less likely they were to run into her brothers.

The journey proved to be fairly uneventful, which was about as much as Oduin could have asked for. They managed to find caravans and rides to minimize the amount of walking, and by the time they made it to Vers, the hype was terribly high.

As the last caravan trundled into the little settlement, Oduin grabbed his pack and vaulted off the cart before it had even come to a stop. He shouldered the pack, turning to the cart to make sure Ejskoia was also up and at 'em.

"We're here!" he said with almost giddy excitement, pulling out a piece of paper from his pocket and peering at it. On it were directions to the nearest Kinfa breeder, which was located not far from the settlement center. "Are you ready to find these feathers?"

Travel, especially when it was that easy, agreed with Ejskoia. She didn't complain once they entire time and in fact seemed to be rather up beat about the whole thing. When Oduin hopped off the cart before it stopped she watched him with a smile and grabbed her bag. Of course she waited until it slowed a little bit before she hopped off.

"Yes! I wonder what colors we'll find!" She had learned that the beast came in many colors and patterns so she was excited. If they were going to a breeder she couldn't help but be curious to see which kind they kept. If they went to the wild she was even more excited to see the wild patterns. "We need a blue for you. I'll match your eyes."

He looked up from the directions, pursing his lips a little in thought. "Do we want to use the breeder as a backup, in case we can't find any on our own? We might be able to track some if we head north a bit toward the Savannah."

He folded the paper back up and stuck it into his pocket, squinting in a roughly northerly direction. It could be worth it, and probably wasn't dangerous. Kinfa were huge, but that meant they were eminently easy to spot.

"Blue would do nicely, I think," he said, beaming. "What about you? We could try to find a deep, saturated pink for you. With some white, maybe." And perhaps just cross their fingers that they'd come across the right ones.

Finding one in the wild would be nice. Probably preferred too since those would be free. A breeder might want payment for the feathers even if they came off naturally. Not that Ejskoia wouldn't pay for some, she just thought it would be more fun to find her own.

"How about we try to find some first.." It was the more fun option of the two. "Hm, pink or teal for me." She didn't really like girly things but if her friend said it would look good on her then she would trust his judgement.

"Lead the way." Since he had the map he was in charge. That and her sense of direction was off since they weren't in Sauti.
