Davvyd was feeling refreshed after a night's sleep. His energy was restored, and he was quite pleased to have some fresh water to drink. Everything in the Barrens had been hot and stale. It had been too much of a risk for Fulsome to expend his gift there, in case greater need arose. He savoured the fresh water, enjoying the treat. Despite Fulsome's tumble yesterday, this place already seemed far more welcoming than the Barrens. Or the Bog, for that matter. Golyath landed on his head, munching on a piece of dried fruit he'd liberated from their supplies.

"We're gonna have some stories to tell, back at home! Tell 'em how we saved our companion from a sure death in mysterious Mistfruit Forest! Now we just gotta find that grove. I bet lots of does would one of those fruit ..." Davvyd trailed off, apparently lost in thoughts of pretty does.

Golyath bobbed his head. "You bet bud. You can tell all the does. Better wake Fulsome up though. Time to get going on the day?" He spoke around a mouthful of dried apple.

Davvyd nodded, nearly dislodging Golyath, and wandered over to his sleeping friend. He nosed him gently, and stepped back, waiting for him to wake. As his eyes popped open, and focused, Davvyd greeted him. "Morning. You all recovered from your tumble yesterday? We better get going if we're gonna find much of anything today. Can't be out here too long, gotta bring our stories back before they get stale."

Fulsome rolled to his feet with a groan. Yesterday had been a little ... too much. After all that time spent wandering in the Barrens, within an hour he'd broken a leg in this new place? Figured. He shook, his head, clearing the remnants of sleep. It was a good thing that Davvyd had been there. And a good reminder why a wise noulicorn didn't just adventure alone. He walked, stiff legged, over to the little up welling he'd made last night. He took a long drink, appreciating the water.

He glanced at his friend, who was clearly ancy to get going. "Would want someone to get back there with a better story for the ladies, right?" He could almost see Davvyd blanch. Fulsome hid a smile. Davvyd's motivations typically weren't that hard to figure out. But sometimes it was nice to be around those who just weren't a puzzle.

Having had a drink, he was ready to explore further. This time, he swore, he'd keep a better watch on his footing.

---

Despite the fact that the sun was coming up, mist still clung to the ground. "Odd ... I wonder why it doesn't burn off, like in Homewood?" Davvyd didn't give much more than a shrug as he blazed a trail through the dead woods. Fulsome kept a keen eye out for obvious activity from the others. While he was sure they were the cause of all the dead trees, this place didn't seem to be like the Ruins. There you couldn't turn around without seeing their overt influence. He pondered if that meant Mistfruit would be easier to restore? After all, Wanderlust had mentioned that there was even some natural magic here, a grove of trees that had resisted even the others. Perhaps it was just that well hidden ...

The pair hiked through the low hills, with Golyath sometimes flying ahead to scot. Up, then down. Up, then down. The sun was nearing its peak in the sky as they broke for lunch. They ate in quiet, as Fulsome stared out at the trees. As he chewed on a dried travel ration, some thing made of mushed up cooked roots and grains, he thought he heard something. The forest was so quiet, was it just his ears playing tricks on him? His ear twitch. No, that was something, after all.

"You hear that Davvyd?" He got back to his feet, his lunch forgotten about. The other noul quickly grabbed the remainder of the bar, before following.

Davvyd did, in fact, hear that. And so did Golyath. The faery soared into the air, and zipped towards the sounds. "Sounds kinda like water, don't you think bud?" Davvyd trotted after the faery, with Fulsome following closely after, it a bit more slowly. Davvyd assumed he didn't want a repeat of yesterday.

As they wound through the dead wood, the noise got louder and louder. It was unmistakably water. Golyath flitted back, landing on Davvyd's head. "Lottsa water up there, bud." As Davvyd emerged from the trees, he sucked in his breath. In a plunging valley below a river ran in from the barrens, and right up to some giant thing clearly created by the others. The water pooled up in a lake. But on the other side of the huge obstruction there was nothing. Not a single trickle. Before Fulsome even arrived, he knew they'd be making their way down to the valley. No aqua could resist that quantity of water. Davvyd was sure he'd never even seen this much water in one place.

Fulsome arrived, close on his heels, and gasped. "I guess we're finding our way down there?" Fulsome could only nod, mouth agape.

Fulsome had never seen that much water, in all of his days. Even from this distance, he could feel it. So much power! So much potential life! But it was all stopped up at that dam. How had creatures managed to divert that much water from its natural course. His eyes traveled the dried river bed. Once, that area had probably been lush and full of life. Now it was just dust. He frowned. He simply had to get down there.

Davvyd was already picking his way down, and he wasn't far behind. He through caution to the wind, and assumed the lead. He simply had to have a better look at the monstrosity that towered above the dead river.

---

The trip down the hill side had taken much of the early afternoon, but now they stood in the shadow of the dam. "How could such a thing be made?" Fulsome stared upward. This thing seemed as tall as Grandfather Tree! How were they to undo such a thing? Davvyd seemed to have no answers.

He stalked along the towering wall. Not a single drop of water spilled from the other side, despite the fact that Fulsome could hear it. Entirely unnatural. He closed his eyes, and reached for his magic. With all his force, he tried to pull on the water on the other side. Nothing happened at first. He concentrated as hard as he could, and pulled with all of his mental force. The tiniest stream of water poured over the top of the forsaken dam, and plunged downward. It was so small and narrow that by the time it reached the ground it was nothing but mist. Fulsome shook his head. He was not powerful enough to solve this problem, certainly not on his own. "We need to go back. I have to explain this thing to the other expanders."

Davvyd looked up at the dam. The thing was huge. He wondered if does would even believe him if he told them about it. How it towered over them. At least this would make a story. One of the first to set eyes upon this monstrous object. He wondered if other noulicorns would have some plan on how to fix this mark upon Vykeli ... Maybe the council could come up with something ...

Fulsome interrupted his thoughts. His friend was right, it was probably time to go back. Wouldn't want a bunch of others to start spreading this story around. He figured that many noulicorns would stumble upon this thing. It was huge after all. Davvyd was a little regretful that they hadn't found the enchanted grove. That sounded a lot more romantic that some giant dam. Ah well, perhaps that dam story would appeal to a different type of doe. Perhaps even the type that would like to see this place for themselves ... And needed an escort! He grinned, plan already forming in his mind.

"You're right bud, lets get back." Golyath clung firmly to his mane. Davvyd could feel that he wasn't too interested in heading back into the Barrens, but it couldn't be helped. He addressed his familiar, "You know, the sooner we're back, the sooner you can have some fresh fruit." Golyath grumbled, but didn't say anything.

Fulsome was already hiking back up the hill, clearly determined to get a good start on their trip before they were too tired to continue. Davvyd spared another glance for the dried river bed. Had the others really done this? Change the way an entire river flowed? He shook his head. Sometimes he felt like they were up against more than they could handle. How could they fix damage of this sort? This place might be cooler than the Barrens, but the problems here suddenly seemed bigger.

An atmos could go into the Barrens and make a real difference. Here, what could they do? A gardener could plant a new plant in the Barrens, tend it and ensure its growth. Here, with Homewood so distant, they couldn't. His own gift was of the most use when there were other noulicorns around. He pondered this. Had Grandfather Tree developed those new gifts with this place in mind? Aqua, Fungal and Spectrum? Were they the magic that this place needed? Was Fulsome, and those like him, they key?

That was a big thought to chew on. Good thing he had a long trip back home to think on it.
