Word had spread of a mysterious forest that had emerged eastward of Homewod. The very thought brought curiosity, the eagerness of a new adventure to a steadily growing Buck who grew in the ruins. By now he was fully accustomed to Homewood, even the Barrens which brought bad vibes. He wasn't alone though following a slightly larger buck named Oleander. Their meeting was most likely destined since they worked together with magic to learn more about the world they lived in.Ayala was destined as well leaving her to dote over the young buck protecting him from the terrors of the world. She, being long enough to sun herself on his back was a Scuttle Scoot not to be trifled with. Ayala had a nasty bite along with a tail to prove she wasn't a pushover.

Now they stood waiting outside this mysterious creation which seemed more desolate than the Barrens. The smell of decay in the trees and plants made Ayala wrinkle her hose in disgust. The "Others" just seemed to destroy everything they touched let alone mark things of their presence. There would be no sunning here, that was for sure. Still, this place had an air of mystery to it as to why the boys had decided to process magic and see what happens here. The ruins certainly seemed interesting with their hot and cold spells.

Tarine looked inward toward the forest as he waited for his friend. New places definitely held curious questions about how some magic would respond to a forgotten, decaying world. Living within the ruins he excepted darkness, scattered resources, and danger. Looking inward all he could feel was uncertainty seeing the skeletal trees which paled in comparison to the lushness of Homewood.

"It is definitely not pleasant in there, Tsarine" his companion murmured hoping they'd change their mind.

"No, it is not. But, we won't fully know until this place has researched, discovered a possibility that things can change".

"True" she spoke, "But, I don't like it".

"I know Ayala. But, we made an agreement to try the magic out. See if there's any effect on the land itself".

"Carry away than " she nodded, "I think I saw Olelander heading toward here".

Tsarine's head turned quickly to glance behind them seeing his familiar friend heading up to meet them, "Yep, He's almost here".

Tsarine's heart beat a little faster seeing Olelander though he hadn't a clue why. He rather liked the other buck's company choosing to follow him when he announced they'd try using magic in this Forest.

User Image It had been some time since he had seen his new found friend. The very insightful and eager Tsarine. But foremost thing that was on his mind. The new land that had emerged a fair distance away from Homewood. A forest that laid in ruin like the most of everything else around the outside of Homewood. Gathering up bits and bobs of parchment and other such things. Oleander looked around the shambles that was his den and looked outside for the Cockatrice that was his companion. Now where was that bird?

"Shiny, where have you gotten off to? We're leaving." He half shouted as he headed away from his clearing and in the direction that was sure to lead him to this new place.

A squawk came from the bushes as a green and yellow cockatrice shot forth and streaked up to be beside the Buck. Oleander only chuckled before leaning down a little for the bird to leap into a sort of basket so that Oleander can move quicker. Then they were free of the trees and into the barrens, he let Shiny down and the two streaked across the sands. Shiny always loved wide open races even though Oleander always beat him. But he could run as fast as his legs would let him.

----

After what seemed like days of travel, Oleander and Shiny found themselves at the edges of Mistfruit forest. Shiny stopped nearly on a dime though they did tumble slightly beak over toes, but sat up and gawked at the grey trees. So this was the place that had appeared out of seemingly no where, it was a place he didn't know if he could get his head around. Giving himself a shake, Oleander walked around the edge of the forest. Watching the trees as they seemed to get worse the more he walked.

"This place should get interesting results." He mused before spotting a familiar pair just a head of him. "Hey Tsarine! Fancy meeting you here." his tone was one of humor, as they drew closer.

"So this is Mistfruit Forest, eh? Doesn't look exactly like much, just a little more upgraded Barrens and downgraded Homewood." he mused, Wonder just what the Others had left behind."

He did want to find something to take home. But he was there to see how effective their magic would be effect the forest. With as grey as it is, surely a Solar's power could do something... Right?

Ayala huffed being ignored but she was merely being a bit silly letting the boys greet one another. Tsarine chuckled at her display but focused on the other buck. "Fancy meeting you here as well. I grabbed supplies and scrolls in case you needed extras. Seems this place has quite the welcoming feeling here doesn't it. I kind of wonder just what it looked like before ... this happened". Words carrying a bitter tone had seeped out like sap on a warmed tree. Tsarine hated being bitter but, it was mutual feeling he was sure with Oleander.

This place had definitely seen better days.

Waiting patiently he looked over to Oleander, ]"You think we'll find anything useful here? It is so desolate you can smell, feel the decay. Ah well.... in we go" he spoke with an optimistic tone. As he stepped into the beginning of the forest shivers ran his entire being. The grasses were parched of life as if they'd hadn't been watered in ages. Gazing around him as he followed the worn path Tsarine took in a horrific picturesque canvas that literally was taken over by those skeletal trees that once could have been amazing like Homewood. Instead, they were bent in strange ways reaching outward as if pleading for help. Tsarine caught sight of the huge dam laid out before him. Of course, he had not an inkling of what this structure really was but he was certain the "Others" had built it here.

"I don't understand. Why would the "Others" build ...this?" he asked aloud to his friend with a confused expression.

User Image

Ayala groaned how murky, foggy this place was leaving it a time forgotten on purpose, "I really couldn't tell you Tsarine".

Tsarine then turned Olelander, "Alright where shall we practice the magic? This huge structure would be my guess but, I'll leave the thinking up to you".

User Image Oleander might have over looked Ayala, but Shiny hadn't. Leaping up some, he looked at her giving a bit of a squawk in greeting. Oleander gave a chuckle seeing the Cockatrice greet the Scuttle scale.

"Good to see you too Ayala." he said before they started through the trees.

Here the mists started to pick up and the trees thinned out even more. Stumps laid everywhere as it seemed that the Others had left when they were cutting them down. It made him feel oddly exposed before he stopped and glanced up towards the Dam that Tsarine had spotted. The jutting stone that was worn with age. Had a few cracks and breaks near the top to let some water spill out in small falls.

"Looks like they wanted to make sure the water didn't go anywhere."Oleander said as he felt the need to take a closer look. "Lets get a closer look at that. Might find a good place to try our magics here."

Oleander noted that they both were adepts and both were gifted with other abilities. One of his own was Sunbeam. He had to wonder how it would effect the little plant life in this place. Or how much it would light up the darkness... So many questions ran through his mind as he awaited for Tsarine's reply.

As Shiny greeted Ayala she smiled much like a gecko living high on life smiling in a sweet expression, "Hello there Shiny". Secretly she was just glad he hadn't tried devouring her. If it ever turned to that she'd show everyone she wasn't to be trifled with. Right now she felt secure as always on her boy's back.

Being one with Grandfather Tree now led Tsarine's mind into questions. A severe chill ran his spine wondering why, how the "Others" would cease the water from flowing freely like Home Wood. It was baffling but he tried not overthinking why this would be anyone's reasoning. The mist rose upward thick around the two bucks leaving an air of silence around them. Those trees, this water must have been as glorious as Home Wood at some point. Plants, flowers, even the water was especially clear. Looking around this place though gave only dread as it was sealed off away from everything, even the knowledge of the nouls themselves.

"It's a great place" he responded looking eagerly to Oleander for guidance. This place definitely needed some kind of magic to bring its breath back. Pondering a moment he flicked an ear. What magic he pondered as the mist swirled upward like a blanket. The bog would be there next step then probably the Brarrens or ruins. The more magic he learned the more adept he could be at healing Vykelli. Tsarine was headstrong about one thing that being he would ascend someday and help the world grow around him. Even this place someday might actually grow as the ruins started to.

"Which ones would you like to start with?" he queried looking at the other buck. Even in the murkiness of the mist Olelander still shined like the sun to him. This was a comforting feel to the younger of the two nouns, feeling rather safe in his presence.

User Image Taking a glance around the place, Oleander thought it was a good place to start. It was open enough for the two of them to move without stepping on each other's tails. And Shiny was content with scratching at something not far from where they were. He could see the cockatrice and that was a change. Normally Shiny would be long gone from sight the moment its feet touched the ground. Perhaps it was the eeriness of the place that made it want to stick close.

"This place will do just fine." Oleander nodded as he shrugged himself out of the basket and pack. The containers of ink clinking together a bit. "I have one that I would like to try out. It is a stronger version of your Glow. So shall we shed a little more light on the area?" He asked, while his Sunbeam would surely outshine the small softer Glow of his Companion.

Oleander wanted to see just how much light his Sunbeam would cast. Would it be as scorching as the real sun, even though it is said to only have a softer heat. How far could he push it... These were questions he had, but he wondered what gift Tsarine had to toss at him. Thermal Drift was also one they could put to the test... The possibilities...

Ayala allowed herself to relax though the thought of no sun was unnerving she tolerated it. Closing on eye she slipped into partial slumber while still keeping an eye on the boys. Their magic use between them was an interesting thing to watch. She also noted Tsarine was warming up to Oleander, even more, when they were together. Perhaps something the duo had no clue about, she was certain.

Tsarine was happy to oblique in Oleander's request standing perfectly still as he closed his eyes summoning his magic as he contacted the Great Tree. While the power was within him he let the Great Tree guide him whenever his gifts were in full use. Feeling that tingle in his horn the power stretched around him in warmth and security. As always his marking from the second visit to the tree illuminated sparkled showing the light Tsarine held within. As he concentrated his horn glowed soft yet consistent.

Reopening his eyes he stood there rather proud beaming as he looked toward the other buck, "Okay. your turn".

This land certainly needed all the help it could get. While the duo certainly wouldn't see permanent changes, the light they shed upon this area would soak within slowly warming, illuminating to a better tomorrow.

User Image Oleander watched as Tsarine concentrated on his magic, the older Noul had found a friend in this younger buck. More so then anyone else he had yet to really meet. That is when he bothered to exit his home and into the waking world. He was always nose deep into a scroll and taking notes of magics of the past. Now he and Tsarine were working their own way through their own magics.

Blinking out of a bit of a stare, he shook his head as the magic of Glow eased over Tsarine's horn to be a constent soft light. When he mentioned that it was Oleander's turn. The older Noul stepped closer to Tsarine. He closed his eyes and concentrated on his own magics. Reaching deep for that yellow ball that was like the sun and grasped at its threads. Twisting them together and pulling them to the surface. His own horn started to glow, Oleander opened his eyes as he stood not too far from Tsarine. Without so much of a word, he leaned his head forward and added his own Sunbeam to the Glow to almost create a blindingly bright light.

While he could remain there a moment, watching Tsarine's eyes, as close as they were, Oleander raise his head up and let the magic go higher to become a blazing ball over head. Bright like the sun it was, but remained a soft warmth to scare off the shadows and all they brought.

"How was that?" He asked, kinda blinking away the black spots that had splashed his vision from the first blast. He hadn't meant to blind anyone, but Magic sometimes had a mind of its own after all.

Ayala's eyes both opened wide when she felt the heat swirling in Tsarine. Her next reaction was jaw-dropping when Olander touched horns with Tsarine causing a fiery ball of sorts that warmed up everything around them. It felt amazing to her rough skin as the heat increased between them. Such light this place had probably never soaked in for years, eons now.

Tsarine wondered what Oleander was planning as the warmth of his horn made imprints in the fog. Complete shock overtook him, eyes opening wide, as the other buck deliberately used his adept power touching his horn again Tsarine's. This was the closest that the young buck had ever come to a noul let alone Ayala who claimed his back. Shock turned curiosity he let their magic burn brighter then within the ruins. Something he couldn't place a hoof on was happening but, for the time being, he couldn't decipher the message. As both magics faded out like simmering embers he blinked from the brightness seeing dancing dire rat shadows dancing around his head. A firm shake and his vision left his gaze back upon Oleander again. He wouldn't say his heart was beating so fast out loud but, silently something was growing within him like a maturing flower.

Waiting a few minutes he lowered his heart rate and caught his breath, "That was the brightest thing I've ever seen, even in the festival. It was incredible!" he responded still feeling a little fluttery. Shaking his head again he looked around curiously, "So, what do you think is here? I mean past this huge thing they built. I've heard whispers of mystery... have you?"

His heart was returning to normal now though it still fluttered a few moments more. There had to be something else otherwise the nouls wouldn't have whispered the word "Rare fruit" so he could have heard it.

User Image "Right? Gets the blood flowing." he grinned, while after that show, his nerves were a little frazzled and tingled all over. He wasn't too sure if it was just the after effect of the magic, or was it something deeper... He would have to explore this when they weren't surrounded by death and decay. Giving himself a shake all over to get the fizz from his nerves he looked around as the Sunbeam lingered over head.

"From the whispers I had heard, one named Wanderlust had been here and found something. A grove of trees and bore strange fruit... I think... " He looked around where they were, hoping to spot something, but from this point he wasn't having that much luck. "If we can find them, we can do another test." It was a thought for the most part.

"Yeah" replied Tsarine still feeling his heart beat faster when Oleander spoke. He tried really hard thinking it was a Magic still making him feel warmer than usual. Tsarine couldn't resist smiling still though as he dreamily listened to Oleander.

Fruit? How could there be fruit growing in such a desolate place Tsarine wondered. This area was skeletal, completely devoured of life, yet there were trees producing fruit. How could this be? Tsarine just couldn't grasp the possibility till the sunbeam still fading above their heads lighted something peculiar. Tsarine thought he was still blinded by the light until he noted a narrow path hidden by curving branches. Tilting his head he moved away from Oleander in curiosity stopping before the path.

"Hmm, I wonder where this goes?" he questioned turning back to look at Oleander. Think that is heads up to the grove with the fruit?"

Turning back to look up into the darkness Tsarine noted it was still inhabited by mist. This place wasn't pleasant especially standing away from the warmth of his friend. How long had they been here? Was it night yet? Still day? Tsarine couldn't say for sure. The area just looked so dead and forgotten though he could still see things clearly so it had to be daylight currently...

User Image Oleander peered over Tsarine's shoulder as it seemed that his companion has spotted something. The path seems to be a slight difference then the rest of the area. Grey and dull as it is, even Shiny had even spotted something. It certainly looked like something that could lead them in the right direction for the most part.

"It could be something. If anything it could be the right direction." Oleander agreed as he stepped up beside Tsarine. "Lets head out before what light might be left fades away."

He glanced up towards the Sunbeam that was still fading like flare. Perhaps making a globe that large hadn't been the greatest of ideas, but hey, it was go big or go home. And he certainly went really big, just a little over board. He would remedy that the next time and try a smaller orb of light...

Tsarine for the first time hadn't flinched when Olelander drew up close to examine the path. He was becoming extraordinarily relaxed with his friend being around. Even if they were the last two nouls alive, Olelander's presence gave him the confidence to push onward. Ayala of course never said anything to either of them yet, Tsarine pondered what went on in her head most of the time. She being his bonded knew exactly what her "Big Boy" lived and breathed. Turning back to look at her she smiled back in a genuine fashion just soaking in that light show she was directly underneath. What was thought to be minor was actually a full rounded solar ball that still radiated light even after Tsarine's glow had returned within him.

The right direction. It had to be besides that huge dam that kept the water stable, confined from flowing freely. He wondered for a moment if this creation was the reason the barrens suffered from no water of its own to thrive. As Olelander's words captured his attention he nodded and began walking through the small passage leading to, well it led somewhere because it was a path. All paths good or bad they lead somewhere, anywhere really.

As he took the lead with Olelander behind him he still thought about the Barrens, "Say Olelander" he began letting his mind churn through thoughts, "Do you suppose that huge contraption blocking the water is the reason that the Barrens can't have the water of its own? I mean that the "Others" purposefully kept the water imprisoned for themselves?"

It was a harsh thought which he pondered why it even came to him as swiftly as it had. Others were whispering about this place which means there was something positive here. Other than dead trees, grass, and other foliage nothing remained. Not even fauna dared tread in this area leaving him to wonder what the "others" were really like.

Looking around him he only saw the mist swirling around dead branches, "What did happen here?" he muttered with a sad voice. Suddenly Homewood started feeling like a paradise to him compared to his place.

User Image Oleander followed up behind Tsarine as they walked along the path. The sunbeam slowly disappeared behind the trees as they drew further away from it. It would go out on its own and his magics would replenish itself as he rested... More or less anyways. Things changed to the contraption that was left behind by the others. The Dam that held back the water from leaving the forest.

"Could very well be that it is what is keeping the water from the Barrens. There must have been signs there that Water was a thing before." He hadn't been on the quest to save Wanderlust and their crew a while back. "I do wonder if enough of us got together we could break it and release that water..." There went his own mind. While it was possible that enough power from Ascendeds could bust their way through... Just it would take a lot and who knew how many would survive it to begin with.

"From the assortment of books and things I found in the Ruins. Some I can read, others not so much, they created blockages to try and gain power over the water. Use it for other purposes... But in the end it also caused more damage then it was always worth." An ear flicked to the side as he paused a moment.

When Tsarine stopped, Oleander nearly bumped into him before peering around. The mists had gathered in thick once more, snaking their way through the trees, slithering as they always did. Around them everything was grey and dull, instead of green an lush like most would have liked. This place needed a lot of work to become what it once was.

"The Others got too greedy and it ruined something that should have been protected." Oleander answered, not really knowing if the question was to be answered or not, it was there in the open. "They never seemed to see things as sacred. If it lived and breathed, could be touched and taken. They coveted it like treasure and most times destroyed it without pause or thought." Sadness crept its way over Oleander that made him shiver, he wanted to go home now...

Tsarine sighed tossing his head, "It's horrible. I grew up in the ruins all my life having no idea the "Others" did such things. Shivers began slithering over his coat like rippling rivers. "This is why the world had the great tree called upon us, to make a difference". Tsarine thought he was sounding corny just hearing a heroic speech emerge but there was viable truth to his words.

"There has to be something here, somewhere" he muttered pushing onward.

How could a race before the noulicorns abuse a beautiful world leave them to heal the wounds? It just didn't seem fair yet here the nouls were out healing the land. His footsteps were heavy thinking about the walls, the structures of the ruins.

If it lived and breathed, it could be touched and taken.

"Tsarine" came the soothing voice of Ayala, "What's done is done. Neither you or any of the other nouls can change that. But, what you can do is keep looking for a way to heal the land. Keep using your power together and someday there will be a difference. Yes, you are here looking at what was left behind but, it's you, him that will change the world". Closing her eyes she hoped that settled both bucks a little better.

Tsarine feeling beaten paused in his stride soaking in his familiar's words like a sponge. She was right, this world was damaged but, like the Botanics that grew plants their solar power was helpful as well.

"Thank you, Ayala" he responded shaking the looming dread off his coat like brushed dirt, "We've got a mystery to uncover". Walking a little faster he was determined to follow this winding road to wherever it leads to. Right now he was just extremely thankful he wasn't alone in all this like in the ruins.
