Quote:
It was already late in the evening but the merchant seemed unfazed by the passing of time. He sat, poised and elegant, watching the world around him. He didn’t seem bored but he sat, fingers laced atop the table; below it, he kept his toe tapping to some silent tune in his head. He was tall, by human standards, though while sitting down he didn’t seem particularly threatening. If you didn’t look at his face.

He had graceful features--sharp and refined. His chin and nose tapered to a point, giving him an air of sophistication, but that, combined with his slitted eyes and pointed teeth, there was something undeniably predatory about him. He watched with a hungry gaze and a mischievous, nearly sinister smile. His ears were pointed and were prominent despite being tucked behind his vibrant, multi-colored hair. The most intrusive feature that indicated there was something not human about him were the curling horns protruding from his temples and the oil-slick black scales that brushed his cheeks and forehead. He was well dressed, in a fashion obviously otherworldly, and seemed to enjoy dressing himself up in glistening gemstones.

His stall was somehow both simple and overwhelming; it was only a table with a deep purple cloth over it, but scattered neatly atop it were an array of items that seemed to carry some magical weight to them.

He did not seem intimidated in the slightest and, upon noticing a customer approaching, he smiled.

He did not rise to meet them nor adjust his position in the slightest. He followed them with his fierce eyes.

In a silky voice, he greeted, “Welcome.”

Sylvite had been spending a lot of time at the festival. For one thing, the food was great, the vibe was full of summer fun, and the gift shops! Sadie was a girl who loved a good gift shop. That stuff alone would have been enough to keep her coming back for a couple days, but on top of all that, the energy draining was so easy. People were so busy walking around and looking at stuff that they didn't notice when she walked past. As a Captain, she didn't even have to bump into people anymore, so she could just walk around pretending to window shop and by ten end of every night, she'd have a whole bunch.

The next couple weeks, she'd be able to take it easy and just focus on her investigations, or maybe even, like, video games. She felt like she deserved some video games.

She was at the fat edge of the festival when she felt something. It didn't feel like a senshi or another agent or anything, but it was in the same sixth-sense part of her brain where she could sense those auras.

Obviously she went to check it out.

It was a long walk. She kept expecting to see something just around the corner, but she was practically outside of town before she saw him. The guy she found didn't look like some new kind of knight. He looked almost the same as any of the festival merchants, except that his booth wasn't quite as decorated, and he had horns.

She walked right up to him, eyes wide, and she rested her fingers on the table. "You're interesting," she said. Her gaze flicked down to the items scattered across the table, and it stayed there for a several seconds. "Are you selling stuff?"

“Trading,” he clarified, but didn’t seem offended. “If you’ve got something interesting, I’ll make you a good deal. As you can see,” he gestured towards his table of goods. “I’ve got plenty worth your while. What do you like--weapons, books, decor…”

He let the question fade and instead gestured to his table; there were many interesting things, but the one that seemed both closest to her and most impressive was a golden bangle with intricately engraved stars. There was something almost magical about the piece; it did not glow, but it was like the moonlight clung to it, desperate to be a part of its beauty.

Sylvite took a look at what the guy had spread out on his table, and even though she was trying to be subtle about it it was pretty obvious the way she was peeking up every few second to take a look at his horns.

The things themselves were interesting. At first glance, it was just old stuff. That had never been Sylvite's thing. She didn't really care how many dead people had touched something. She only really liked things if they were cool or pretty now. Some of the things had a sparkle to them. There was something weird about the temperature, like maybe some of the objects were warm for no reason.

And then there was the box. That was where the aura was coming from, she realized. It wasn't from the guy himself.

Magic. A bunch of this stuff had to be magic. Her gaze locked on the golden bangle bracelet. It wasn't glowing like a starseed, but it seemed to hold light kind of like a cat's eye.

And there was something else about it, too. It was pretty, yeah, but so was a lot of what this guy had. This bracelet, though? It tugged on something she couldn't quite remember. She needed it.

That was why she tugged the precious little star thing out of her pocket. She held it close to her for a second, comparing the way it glowed to the way the bracelet seemed to be shimmering.

"It looks like you like magic stuff," she said. She glanced back up at him, still curious, but knowing better than to ask questions for free. "I've got this." She set the stone on the table. "Are you from space?"

He didn’t seem to mind her looking at him, and he continued to sit leisurely at his table; one leg was crossed over the other and he tapped his foot as if to some silent tune. He hadn’t expected her to ask but he didn’t at all seem to mind.

“Aren’t we all?”

His eyes fell upon the star and the moment he laid his eyes on it, he leaned forward, with interest. “I’ll trade anything on this table for that,” he said, nodding to the piece. He wanted to reach for it, but he refrained--at least, until she had made her selection so they could seal the deal.

With the promise of obtaining such a stone, he seemed like he was prepared to part with more information while she made her selection.

“But if you mean, am I from Earth? No. I’m from very far away. But I have come to visit. You don’t seem surprised, though. And you can tell that I like magic things? I like many things, but magic is special. It immediately makes something rarer, more valuable. Don't you think?" It wasn't a real question; he offered her no time to respond before he continued, "You have a distinct aura. Familiar, but not. Are you a sorceress?”

Sylvite's grin got bigger when he admitted to being from somewhere else. She didn't push any further, though. She knew what she needed to. People could just live in space and come visit without having to try and take over.

Take that, Order!

She did shake her head when he started asking her questions, though. "I'm not a sorceress. Not like that," she said, thinking about the way the senshi all got their own special magic. "It was an educated guess. This city gets, uh," she tilted her head, "visitors pretty often." With the senshi and knights it was kinda a different situation, but it was no secret that there was something out there.

She waved a hand over his table. "Plus it looks like you've got stuff from all over, but I wasn't sure until you said so." Most of the stalls back at the main festivals had some kind of theme going on, like little star knicknacks, or Japan-themed stuff, but this guy looked more like he was running some kind of artifact yard sale. Looking closer, she was pretty sure some of the items even had planet symbols on them, even though she didn't know how to tell them apart.

It made the bracelet stand out to her even more. There were no weird possibly-knight symbols, just the pretty stars.

"I'm a soldier," she said, looking back up, "But, like, a magic soldier, so I am kinda interesting." Unfortunately she didn't have anything to show off that didn't involve whipping out knives, so she just made a little jazz hands motion.

"Anyway, can I have this?" she reached towards the bracelet.

"Visitors?" he pressed, looking quite eager. "Oh, that's delightful. I'll have to come back more often. It's been getting so lonely out there. Earth is the first place I've been to that's so bustling." He nodded to the bracelet she reached for. "I will trade you for that bracelet, my lovely, Magic Soldier. You have excellent taste. I may even be a bit sad to part with that one. But," he clicked his black, forked tongue against the roof of his mouth, exposing his little fangs for just a second, "It clashes with my aesthetic. And I can only wear so much adornments and still look professional, so it's better off in the hands of someone who can appreciate it fully."

He did not reach for her offering and would not until the transaction was complete, but it was difficult to hide how much he wanted to.

Sylvite nodded. "Yeah," she said. "Senshi and knights, like, people from the dead planets?" Her lips curled a bit just talking about it. "They keep showing up here. They're not as nice as you, though. Not even close."

She wasn't about to focus on all that when this interesting visitor was the one right in front of her. When he mentioned the bracelet clashing with his aesthetic, she giggled. "I mean, I'm not gonna argue too much 'cause I do want this, but I dunno. I think if you wore all this stuff at the same time," she gestured at anything on the table that looked like it could be worn including the weapons because that was how you put on a show, "I'd be impressed. I'd still buy stuff from you."

She pushed the little gem towards him with one finger, and then she picked up the bracelet and slipped it onto her wrist. She held it up for a better look. The sleek black uniform didn't need something so delicate with it, but it would be great with some of her other clothes. It was hard to take her eyes off of it, with how it glimmered and everything, but she did and she nodded.

"Lovely Magic Soldier sounds really cool, but my name's Sylvite," she said. "We've got a deal, Mister, uh, what is your name?

She reached out for a handshake.

He smiled, an earnest amusement on his face. Before he took her hand, his fingers curled around the little gem she offered. Like slight of hand, it disappeared from sight almost as soon as he touched it. "Almadel, my lovely Sylvite."

He took her hand in his own and a gave a firm shake. There was nothing shy or uncertain about his grip and, when he drew his hand from hers, he flicked his wrist and produced a simple, glossy, black card. He offered it to her between two fingers. On one side, an ornate symbol that looked incredibly similar to a fingerprint. It was printed with a red, holographic ink.

On the other side, in opalescent ink, a single word in elegant script: Almadel.

"A drop of blood," he said, nodding to the card. "...Press your finger into it. If ever you need anything from me, it's the best way to contact me. Like a very long distance telegram. Or whatever you Earthlings are using these days. "

Chaos or otherwise, he seemed content around her. "It has been a pleasure, my dear. I'll have to keep my eye out for more pretty things like that for you. I hope I'll see you again when I'm next in town."

After the handshake, Sylvite turned her attention to the little card, taking it and turning it over and over a few times. Woah. Even business cards came in magic varieties, now?

"Thanks," she said with a little nod. "I'll see what I can dig up for you, too, okay?" She got the feeling that this guy didn't do handouts, which meant she'd have to get a little creative, but that was okay. She was already wondering what he'd think of rift crystals.

She already had her prize for tonight, though. She took a few steps back from the table, then stopped, giving the merchant one last grin and a big wave to match. "See you around, Almadel!"

Then she turned and practically skipped off into the shadows.
