The Wishing Tree (1): A Destiny City Star Festival Tradition to be held every year; In Town Square, there is a beautiful tree with spreading branches. It is tall, but the lowest branches are easily reached. The city has decorated the tree with small, starlike ornaments and glistening lights. Thick leaves and beautiful purple flowers dangle from the branches, along with a myriad of different colored papers with handwritten wishes. Next to the tree is a stack of blank paper with twine attached, and a handwritten sign that explains:

Write your wish on a sheet of paper and tie it to the tree. Take one wish off the tree and do your best to grant it. When you have granted the wish, bury the paper in the park.

The papers are biodegradable and filled with seeds. There are no rules for wishing, but you are encouraged to wish for something vague enough that it can be interpreted in many ways so that it can be granted; you do not write your name on it, but it is encouraged to write something that doesn’t wish for self gain, but rather something that can make the world a better place. Some wishes dangling from the tree already include things like “I wish there wasn’t so much litter in the park,” “I wish someone would clean the graffiti off the old historic buildings,” and “I wish there were more volunteers at the shelter.”

If you choose to use the Wishing Tree, what do you wish for? If your wish is private, you may write it on the paper and choose a spot in the park and bury it yourself instead of hanging it on the tree.

Jason was having a busy couple of weeks after graduation. He'd been engaged for almost a year but wasn't much closer to really figuring out what sort of wedding he wanted. Where or how, all still up in the air. He wasn't too worried about it. Nischal and him had basically lived like a married couple of years now. It was just something official he wanted out of the way. A more immediate concern was figuring out what to do with his degree. Did he even want a new job? He was pretty comfortable working with his current paper.

He did enjoy his photographer work a lot though, and maybe owning a studio or being part of a studio would be a nice change of pace. Not that being a reporter didn't have fun advantages from time to time. But he'd rather just enjoy an event, then be there for business. Today he had been out and about in the city touring locations that could be good for a potential studio. A business of his own. That had a lot of appeal. Being his own boss.

He was on his way back to his apartment when he passed through the town square and spotted the beautifully decorated wishing tree. A yearly tradition and he'd completely forgotten about this time. Too much on his plate and he barely thought about the goings on in the city. He went over to the table full of colorful paper and twine. He picked up a piece of blue paper and debated on what he could wish for.

What he really wanted to wish for wasn't exactly something someone else could do for him though. It was a wish that involved only two people and a big part depended on him as well.

To have a beautiful family.

Nischal was really all the family he needed. But in the future he really hoped it could grow. It might take some convincing on his part, but maybe if he put it into a wish things might come a bit easier. There were other steps to take first, but it never hurt to make a wish for the future. He knew Nischal had a bit of a past that might make him nervous to start a bigger family, but he was confident that it could help heal some of those wounds. Not to mention, his partner would make a wonderful father. He wasn't sure he'd make a very good father himself. Jason was too much of a goofball to do the parenting thing on his own. Together though, they'd make a good team.

Since his wish wasn't really something to be granted by someone else, he wandered around the park for a bit, looking for a good spot to bury his wish. Somewhere the seeds could sprout on their own. Once he had settled on a spot he dug a little hole and covered it back up. Perfect.

That helped to relieve some of his built up stress these days. With a smile on his face he headed back toward the tree.
