Prompt - An Unsung Hero
The city is looking for heroes! Not super heroes, but the everyday heroes that live in Destiny City. City Council has asked for nominations for these heroes that deserve a little extra recognition for making the city a better place. Posters have been hung in a few prominent locations around the city, searching for “The People’s Heroes”. The posters are quite clear: anyone can be nominated for any reason whatsoever, they don't need to have performed a heroic deed by any stretch of the imagination--all they need to be is a hero to the person nominating them. The nominations aren’t competitive by any standards; participants are asked to fill out a small form either online or in person. Nominations are collected and are televised nightly on a local news channel for the duration of the event; the notes of recognition are also delivered to the nominees when applicable. Do you fill out a nomination, or are you the recipient of one? Are you watching the news for anyone familiar that you might know?
Gossip was par for the course in the office and for once he was actually in it. Oh, no he wasn't the subject of the gossip (his life was far too mundane for that), but he wasn't actually outside. Both he and his partner had been assigned to desk work, if only to sift through some of the minor paperwork they had left. It was a rare occurrence that he was allowed to sit down and to be entirely honest, it was a bit of a relief. He didn't know any cop that didn't enjoy sitting down at least once in a while, even if it was to catch up on the slightly more boring elements of the role.
Unsurprisingly his own partner seemed ecstatic, a half smile on his lips as he kicked up his feet on to the desk and pulled one of the folders from his pile. Regula cast a glance towards his own, pressing his lips into a thin line as he reached towards on of them. Oh he recognised this one, it had come and gone from his desk several times and it was courtesy of that faithful night when he'd discovered he wasn't normal.
He'd been separated from his partner that night and now that he knew the events that had taken place he was more than a little grateful for it.
Flipping open the folder he flicked his gaze briefly towards the tv screen in the break room. Apparently they'd had it on the same channel for the better part of the day, he wasn't sure why, but he'd heard that every now and then small segments came up regarding the heroes of the city. Cute idea, this seemed to be his overarching opinion of the vast majority of the events currently happening in the city.
Had anyone they knew featured so far?
He returned his attention to the paperwork in his file and hazarded half a smile at some of the statements. He knew the names on them, he knew who they were and he knew that for theme to come in to a place like this it would have been hard. While their accounts sounded a touch strange, they all matched for the most part. Unfortunately the one thing that didn't match was the cause of death on the autopsy reports, it didn't sit well with him to have the cause of death be associated with a rabid dog, but to expose the truth would have had far less consequences. Suffice to say that on this occasion he would have to accept the lesser of two evils and for now, be satisfied that the people who mattered were safe.
Several signatures later and he was on to the next one.
"Hahahaha look it's us!" No sooner had he opened another one than his partner had motioned to the tv screen. Regula looked up, albeit lower than his partner probably preferred and sure enough, there they both were on the screen. Between them stood two of the runners who had participated in a charity run earlier in the year, both tired, and both smiling ear to ear.
"So it is," Regula agreed with a smile.
Alas when it came to gratitude it wasn't them being thanked. The two runners were being thanked for their hard work and dedication to their charity, in the last several years they'd raised a hefty sum for their cause and it hadn't gone unnoticed. The fact that both he and his partner were in the photo had simply been a fluke.
"Almost, but not quite," he said with a chuckle and winked towards his partner as he went back to work. He did hear some half-hearted murmuring but it didn't seem his buddy was too heartbroken that the feature hadn't been for them either.
