Destiny City is hosting an annual scavenger hunt during the Star Festival to encourage people to get out and explore their city. The prize for turning in a completed scavenger hunt is a coupon booklet and a few free tickets to upcoming city events. Even if you aren’t interested in the prize, the scavenger hunt is specifically designed to take you through the city to showcase a few historic buildings, some art installations, and some of the city’s greatest accomplishments. While many of the places are familiar, during your explorations you come across a building you’ve never seen before--something that feels out of time. You’ve been in the area countless times before, so how did you miss this place? When you lay eyes on the building, you feel a strange timelessness and have the distinct sensation of being a part of something bigger. Briefly, you may see flashes of some distant past--a flickering memory that you can’t quite place or fully form. It’s hard to make out, but at some point in time you have the distinct impression of a faded figure taking your hand and telling you to do something. They sound hopeful and encouraging, like they really believe in you. By the time you blink, the visions are gone, the building is gone. The only thing that remains is a beautiful little garden and a plaque so faded that you can’t make out the inscription.

Alexa was down to try pretty much anything. It didn't take long for summer freedom to turn into summer nothing-to-do. Like, she had her new job, but it was only a few days a week, which left her plenty of time to get bored with crafts, get bored with video games, and then end up searching the internet for literally anything to do.

That led to the scavenger hunt. Some of the art exhibits were pretty interesting, although most of the historical stops went over her head. She was mostly in it for the prize: coupons. Coupons were basically free money. Who could say no to that?

This last part wasn't too bad. It got her out of the house and into some of the city's cool, fancy neighborhoods with the old-school style architecture. There were brick facades. There were columns. There were cute little tiny dogs staring out of apartment windows. She maybe spent like five minutes staring back.

Then, she saw something weird. She'd been in this area plenty of times before and she'd never seen that building. Obviously, stuff got built, sometimes basically overnight, but this had the same hundred-year-old faded brick look as everything else around.

Weird. Alexa squinted for a couple seconds, then crossed the street to get a better look.

Dria was also on the scavenger hunt, and had found her way through the city, following the clues. She walked up to the intersection where she saw the other girl crossing with a mystified look on her face. Dria looked across to where she was looking and saw a whole new square of buildings that she was sure hadn't been there last week. Yet it looked like it had been there for ages. She ran to catch up. "Hey! Hey! You see it too?"

Alexa turned to see another girl running up to her. She blinked, but then nodded.

"You mean the buildings?" She gestured towards them. She was closer now and could see them way better, but it didn't really clarify much. They were still just as solid looking and just as old.

"This is weird. This is definitely weird, right?" There was some weird magic stuff that Alexa had gotten used to, but buildings popping up overnight was not it. "They weren't here before."

Dria nodded then paused. She had the strangest memory. Her eyes glazed. "I ... I've been here before.. someone..." she did not finish... the memory was too foggy and too emotional.

Alexa lost focus as something forced its way to the forefront of her mind. It was weird. Despite the fact that she could barely think of anything else, she couldn't really make out any details, either. There was the foggy sense of someone taking her hand, but that was it.

Was it supposed to be her mom? Her friends? That guy who had saved her from Order at the warehouse? That had been kinda a blur, too, but she was pretty sure it hadn't gone down in a building as fancy as this one.

It might not even be her memory. The other girl was looking pretty zoned out, and saying something about having been here. This was looking more and more like magic.

"Okay. Huh. I feel it too," she said. Then she shook her head to try to get the nostalgia out, and she marched right up towards the building, fully prepared to look into one of the windows or something. "This is getting interesting."

"Yeah.. someone taking my hand.. leading me." She walked into the plaza as if she was being led. "Yes, yes, here...." And it simply wasn't. The building was simply gone. In it's place was ruins, with some old black marks. In front, was a lovely memorial garden. The plaque was too faded with time to read.

But there was very old woman watering, who definitely wasn't there a second ago. Dria stepped in her path, she had seen this woman before somewhere and somehow knew she was deaf. "Ma'am?" She said a little louder than usual. The woman turned to her slow. "YES, DEAR?" She screeched. And practically a gale force wind pushed her back. "Can you tell us what happened here?"

The old lady looked to the ruins, where Dria pointed. "OH, THAT'S A SAD STORY THAT IS. WAS A LITTLE GENERAL STORE, AND THE FAMILY THAT OWNED IT, LIVED ABOVE. A MOTHER AND FATHER, A TEENAGE BOY AND HIS SEVEN YEAR OLD SISTER. THAT BOY WAS SO GOOD TO HIS SISTER. SHE WAS MY BEST FRIEND - I WAS SEVEN YEARS OLD TOO, JUST THE YEAR THE TOWN OPEN, NEARLY ONE HUNDRED YEARS AGO, TO THE DAY. FREAK ACCIDENT AS THE YOUNGINS CALL IT - A METEORITE OR SHOOTING STAR, OR WHATEVER SHOT THROUGH THE SKY IN THE MIDDLE OF THE NIGHT. IT WAS ONLY ABOUT THE SIZE OF MA FIST, BUT IT STARTED A FIRE THAT WIPED OUT THE ENTIRE-" Her full force yelling had been cut off, it had attracted a lot of stares and attention, some of which was from Brenda, her home health nurse, who had let the old lady get away while she was on the phone. "Come on Ms. Patridge, that's enough bothering these young people, let's back to the house." She smiled apologetically at the two.

Dria just stared wide eyed after them, with her mouth moving but making no sounds...

Alexa was tarting to get close when the whole house just kind of vanished.

Okay. That was crossing the line from suspicious to definitely magical. At that point having an old lady coming over to tell them stories wasn't even that weird. Alexa listened as closely as she did whenever magic stuff came up, although she did have to say she was glad the other girl was a little bit closer to the lady, since she was clearly struggling in the volume control department.

She did stare for a second as the nurse caught up, but it didn't take too long for her attention to turn back towards where the house had been. "So it's like a ghost, but the ghost of a whole house?" She got even closer and squinted at the plaque left behind. There were some numbers on there that might have been dates, but the rest was pretty worn away. "That's actually kinda cool."

She took a look at the scavenger hunt list. Unfortunately, it didn't say anything about ghost houses, but there was something about a plaque recording a historic event. She snapped a picture.

Dria was still staring with her mouth out. She might have been partially deafened for a moment, but then she perked up. "Wow, yeah a ghost house." She'd have to tell her brother. He'd have a field day with this. She too snapped a picture at the faded memorial plaque and crossed it off her list. She looked up. "Well, it was great meeting you. I'd like to meet you again some time. I'm Dria Bones." She spouted off a phone number the woman could reach her by and was about to go on her merry way.

Alexa stared and poked around for a good minute, but it didn't seem like there was anything else in this weird ruin of a courtyard. Huh.

"Yeah, nice to meet you, too," she said. "My name is Alexa."

She wondered if there would be anything else that turned out to be magical on the scavenger hunt. With how Destiny City worked, she wouldn't be that surprised.

Then she turned down the street towards the next building on the list.
