Emiyn perched on the edge of the roof. While the position was considered a bit perilous by others, Emiyn enjoyed the vantage point it gave him over the Oban capital of Sulburi. Ever since coming to this place almost a year ago he had found the rooftop to be a refuge of sorts. It was the only place he was really allowed to wander to while being under the care of his mother’s acquaintances. The thought made him sigh under his breath as he leaned his back against the building and reflected on the past. He had been training under Astri, the local wind caller in his home village, and things had been going well with her. Emiyn had started to learn spells so that he could control the wild nature magic thrumming through his veins and Astri had been impressed with his progress.
And then came the letter from his mother.
The thought made Emiyn pinched the bridge of his nose in frustration. He had thought to say his final farewells to his mother who was living in Oba as a noble’s mistress but instead he had found himself caught up in her drama. Risking himself to save a woman he had never met before only to get dragged along with her love affair with the man who now wanted to make her his wife. Times had changed they said and since the noble’s wife had passed over five years ago they felt it was safe to announce the engagement. His grandparents had ignored the invitation while Emiyn finally ventured to Oba to meet his mother.
It had been a strange meeting indeed. He had immediately been swept up into her arms and taken to be dressed and fitted, his body washed and scented in oils while fine silks replaced his tattered travel clothing. It almost made him feel like a doll for his mother to adore. He also had hated the strong perfumes. They were not like Astri who smelled pleasantly like wild roses kissed by an ocean breeze. The thought made his cheeks still flush at the thought of the mage who he called mentor. It was hard by now for Emiyn to ignore the fact that he had at one point developed strong feelings for his mentor. Who wouldn’t fall for her? He remembered when he first saw her in the middle of that storm in Matori. She had been standing on top of the cliffs with her wild curls flying through the gusts of wind. Her dress had flowed about her and for a second she looked like a spirit of nature. How could such a woman exist and be so bold in approaching him like this in the middle of the storm? Always before he saw people running away from the wild acts of nature, constantly hiding in their homes when the skies darkened and the sea waves began to grow rough. Meanwhile his mentor didn’t even look like she would want to be burdened with a house as it would be too containing for such a wild spirit. Emiyn had immediately felt a strong pull towards her in that moment. Perhaps it was their mutual nature magic calling them together but Emiyn knew he had also felt more than simple friendship with the other Matori. Not that he could ever express his feelings. She would shoot him down in a second. He did have to wonder if she missed him now that he had been gone for nearly a year for this Oban nonsense. It was not exactly his mother who had brought him back to Oba after four years living in back with his grandparents but his grandmother’s delicate health which had stirred him to venture back to Sulburi.
At the time he had never thought about getting caught up in some sort of contract with merchants. Why would one be interested in someone such as himself anyways? He was a simple boy without much finery in life and he felt that personally he had nothing for anyone to gain from taking him. But now that his grandmother was sick he had entered a contract with some Obans that his mother knew. They could help him get to Belrea and find out about new medicines which could hopefully help his grandmother to recover from her illness. He just had to get onto that airship and fly quickly. He hoped that the year of his service in helping the merchants would prove worth it. Hang in there. The medicines that they had given him before seemed to help but now he hoped that the final cure would be waiting for him in Belrea so that he could go back to the simple life in Matori which he had before he came to Oba.
