Pajore was in an absolute tizzy.
A quick trip to the market was suddenly a grand ordeal as streets filled with gossipers and self-made 'priests'. One man in particular stood atop a barrel on a back street leading into the capitol dictating just how this new land would be the final curse on all yaeli.
"If you think they won't infiltrate our streams and wells you're wrong! They'll spread their curse through our waters; all fish will die, and as soon as the water is toxic we'll be next!"
Most were quick to pass him by with a roll of their eyes, but by the time Xenia had led the little ones away he'd grown a small following. A few members of the city guard were trying to calmly talk him down, but Xenia couldn't hear exactly what they were saying anymore. Maybe I should have asked Kitya to come with us after all. While she knew she could keep her younger siblings safe she couldn't exactly keep them from worrying when every other mouth was talking about the Kahikana.
Granted, most gossip was positive. Ever since communication with Tendaji itself had been established and then later, Belrea, the yaeli had grown as a people. Of course they were still frightful and secular, but it was a start.
"So, where should we go first? We can get your new boots, or maybe you two would like some lunch?"

Walking along at her sister's side, Alfina pursed her lips and peered hard at the screaming man. He wasn't the only one she had heard making such claims, but he was certainly being one of the louder ones. She didn't like it, and reached to grip Xenia's clothes for security. "I want boots, but can we give that guy lunch first? He might feel better if he isn't hungry." At the least, he would perhaps stop shouting so much if he was busy eating, and the guards could go back to their.. guarding. She had seen food work as a good distraction with others.

Xenia had done well to keep the pair of them far enough from the growing crowd to not be lost in it, but she couldn't drown out the cries and claims of the man and his doomsayer logic. Caolan stared at the crowd with wide eyes, his mouth dropped open in horror, and like his sister he had wound his hand in the hem of Xenia's skirts for some sort of stability.
Still, when his twin suggested feeding the man Caolan swung around to stare at her, shaking his head furiously. "Nonono-- I don't wanna go over there!" He squished himself into his older sister's side and hip, fiercely wishing his mother was there to cover his ears, or to smooth his hair in that soothing way she always did. "Xenni, I don't want the fish to die - is there gonna be a monster in our well too? Is Kitya gonna fish it out?"

It seemed that providing distractions was going to be a little harder than Xenia had initially thought. Maybe bringing the kids into the city was a mistake? I should have just taken them down to the springs and gone shopping tomorrow. She reached out to put a hand atop Alfina's head, affectionately brushing back strands of violet hair with a smile. Appearing 'calm' in front of her little sister was a lot easier than it was to put up a brave face in front of Caolan.
Instead of keeping her affections light with him, she reached around and pressed him tight against her. "That's sweet Alfie, but let's not. Maybe he'll be nicer the next time we're in town and you can buy him lunch then." The thought that this man was simply hangry did bring a smile to Xenia's face.
Turning to her little brother, Xenia scrunched her nose, pushing the rim of her glasses further up her face. "The first aren't going to die; they're super tough and I bet they could swim away from all of their troubles." She wriggled her hips, like a fish swimming upstream. "And there isn't a monster in the well, but I bet if there was Kitya would have beat it down by now."

Alfina wrinkled her nose at her brother, but kept silent. While she wanted to feed the man and help him feel better, she also wanted to keep her family out of the mess going on around the angry man. Xenia was right. "Maybe next time," she agreed with a little sigh. "I hope the guards feed him, then."
With the well being brought up, the little girl grinned brightly to her twin. "Yeah! Kitya wouldn't let monsters live in our well! I bet mama and papa will keep the well safe, too!" She looked up at Xenia for confirmation. After all, the thought of trying to take on a monster on her own... well, she would leave that to the adults. "And they can't actually change the water.. can they?" A physical monster was one thing, but if the man was right about them making the water toxic, what could they do about that?

That's right! Kitya would've taken care of it! Caolan settled more and more as Xenia tucked him against her side, then more so when she declined feeding the man. He laughed, wiggling a bit with her, imitating her 'fish' dance, then beamed at Alfina, pleased that she agreed. He was definitely less upset than he had been previously, though the suggestion that the water could be 'made sick' ... or, more sick that Yael's water already was, left him wide-eyed and earnest. "What if... it's a poison that makes us turn into fish too?" However - the theory was more a make-believe to him than a real threat, like the promise of monsters had been. The anxiety was gone, replaced by wide, childish eyes and a curious grin. He dropped his grip on Xenia's skirts and instead fluttered his hands by his throat, in an imitation of gills. "Xenni, if I was stuck in the well you'd feed me right?"

"No, they can't. From what I've heard they're really nice." From what she knew, anyway. Xenia wasn't about to admit that she didn't know much more than her little siblings in this regard. What if they really could turn the water toxic? The way her father talked was always so positive so she hadn't really given much thought as to the potential damage they could do.
"Caolan, if you ever turn into a fish, then I'll feed you all the best crumbs and make a pond for you by a really pretty waterfall." She couldn't help laughing; seeing him wrapped up in worry just wasn't as charming as seeing her baby brother's smile! "So, what kind of fish do you two think I'd be?"

"I hope they're nice," the little girl mused. "I bet that guy will feel silly getting all upset if they are actually nice." Assumptions were easy to fall into, but could also result in rather embarrassing feelings when they turned out to be wrong. Even she had experienced that a few times.
Giggling at Caolan's antics, Alfina couldn't help getting caught up in the strange, fantastical conversation going on. "You would be... really big!" she chirped. "Then, you would go explorin' the ocean and find all its secrets."

Thank goodness! Caolan exhaled in relief and beamed, dropping his hands from his throat as his big sister reassured him. Then, she stoked his imagination and he bounced in place excitedly, his mind reeling at the possibilities. He stalled a bit... until his ever clever twin posited her theory, and immediately he crowed in agreement, nodding his head happily as he ballooned his arms out in perfect mimicry of a large fish. "All the secrets! You'd be ... one of those big, pretty fish that all the little fish swim with to feel safe. But Kitya would be bigger, and eat all the fish that were mean to us!"

"Then that's how we'd be! I could be a big fish to protect you two and Kitya would be the biggest one who makes sure we're all safe in the caves! We could find all kinds of treasures, like rocks that only glow when you touch them and little worms that can see without eyes." Of course at that point Xenia was just playing with them, but it was fun to imagine. Hopefully the Kahikana weren't exactly like that; from what she'd heard they were fairly normal, but they just happened to live underwater. Still, making up fantastical stories with her younger siblings was a lot funner than just saying something boring like that.
"Do you think you'll go see them one day? Papa wants to, and Kitya might." It didn't take them too long to make it to a street vendor. If Xenia was completely honest her stomach had led the way. It was just a simple stand; honeyed and spiced meats on sticks with fruit juices for sale, with a few vegetable dishes as well. "Does this look good to you two?"

Giggling at the idea of Kitya eating a line up of mean fish, Alfina began fluttering her hands like little fins. What would she do as a fish? She wasn't sure, but she knew she would want to be as beautiful and graceful as her big sisters. "No eyes? Do they see with sticks like Jessury does?" It was always fascinating to watch the blind kid make his way around town with his long walking stick. She had tried it a couple times herself with her eyes closed, but always ended up running into something or jabbing herself with the handle. ..Well, this was why she had sisters to watch out for her!
The idea of actually going to see these underwater caves made the girl pause. "Maybe if we all went," she offered hesitantly. Alfina was definitely a home-body, and the thought of leaving Yael was intimidating.
It was nothing that the smell of yummy food couldn't fix, though! Inhaling deeply, Alfina's smile returned as she hurried forward to inspect the meats and veggies. "Can I have that?" she asked, looking back at Xenia while pointing out a stick that held small chunks of both meats and veggies.

Would THEY go to see them? Caolan exchanged a skeptical look with his twin, inwardly relieved that she answered for the both of them. He nodded tentatively along with her. As much as he admired their dad for traveling, and Kitya for her bravery... even if they were next to him, he wasn't sure if he could travel. He'd considered it, before, but...
It was exciting! But... meeting these new people? What if they WERE monsters, and their parents and sisters couldn't keep them safe?
Before he had to consider it too much, Xenia distracted them with food - and he clung to it eagerly, bouncing in place as he perused the food on offer. The merchant seemed all too happy to have a family come up, and didn't even seem to mind the two little ones scooting close to the sticks.
"This one-" He volunteered shyly, pointing out a yummy stick with orange, glazed meat and some darker vegetables that he didn't recognize. As the merchant began his work, Caolan craned his head up towards his sister again. ".... Do you think they have new fruit out there too? Do... do you grow things under the ocean?" He asked, astounded.

"Maybe, if they live far enough under the water. It gets really cold there because the sun can't reach it." She knew that much to be true from fishermen's tales. One of the men who frequented her Aunt's shop had been saved from drowning once, and all he could remember was that cold, dark emptiness surrounding him. She hoped that for their sake no Kahikana lived that far down.
Xenia passed over the necessary funds for their snacks, and waited patiently for the merchant to gather them all together. "I'm not...so sure about what kind of fruit they have, being underwater, but I'm sure they grow their own food. Maybe different kinds of seaweeds?" Once the vendor was done he passed the skewers off to Xenia and she in turn handed them to her siblings before picking out one of her own.

Licking her lips eagerly, Alfina accepted the skewer and took a bite. Hot! Breathing heavily to cool the piece in her mouth, she looked over to her siblings curiously. It took a moment before she could talk again, but she smiled when she did with a wrinkle of her nose as well. "I bet it's all salty like the water," she mused, now taking a more cautious bite. "Yum!"
