The Oban marketplaces were abuzz with stories of the new lands. Tyiva couldn’t help overhearing snippets of gossip as she browsed through the wares of several merchants. The Alkidike stood over the earthlings as she casually strode through the desert streets, only stopping when some silks or jewels caught her attention. None of them seemed to satisfy her and she continued finding herself placing back the goods. While she was being extremely picky about choosing out a gift the other benefit was that she could linger in the markets and hear all of the rumors surrounding this Kahikinan.
Her Sisters had planned a journey to this new world and she was more and more curious about it by the day. If this had happened five years ago then surely she would have been one of those to go on that voyage. Even now Tyiva’s fists clenched against the silks that she studied. Couldn’t she still go? Should she?

“Another morning.” Kyril stretched as she walked through the Oban marketplace. She had to run some morning errands for her mentor and had tried to come during the early hours when the market was completely crowded. Still, it was unusually busy with groups gathering around a traveler who was spreading the word about this new country. Kyril wrinkled her nose and shook her head with a soft laugh. Did they really think that this con-artist had already been back and forth between the new country and their own?
“What a joke.”

Tyiva’s hands paused as a hybrid walked past. Had the girl just mocked the traveler who was speaking about the new country? Does she suspect as I do? Tyiva had been a bit more hopeful that the Oban man was being somewhat honest or at least had actual news of the islands. Still judging by the girl’s reaction it seemed that she highly doubted it. The thought made her quickly put down the silks so that she could reach out for the hybrid’s arm, “Excuse me but what do you mean?” She asked her antenna twitching forward with interest.

Blinking with surprise at being touched, Kyril quickly turned on her heel to face….err stare up at the Alkidike. What was an Alkidike doing in the markets here anyways? She even seemed dressed like she was used to Oban culture. I know the world has changed but this...this is still strange. Taking a breath she lifted her chin proudly, “I mean that it’s surely a joke. You’re talking about that guy over there, right? How could he have traveled back and forth so quickly?” She shrugged lightly, “I mean I am interested in this Kahikana but with his stories it sounds more like he’s been spending years there and not the brief few days that would have allowed him to return so quickly.”
She rose a brow and slowly dded as an afterthought, “Would an Alkidike really be interested in this new place?”

Ah. It seemed the hybrid had some courage or at least some standing for her to put on such a front. The thought brought a quiet chuckle to Tyiva’s lips, “You believe so strongly that he is a liar. How would you know the exact timeframe for a journey?” It was more of a testing statement. Some earthlings even refused to acknowledge that such a new land existed. People that lived under the water? How could such a thing be? Even Tyiva had been skeptical at first but when the mystic seemed intent on these lands she had started to believe. Surely such a place must exist for why would their Sisters leave their homelands otherwise?
As the hybrid questioned her own interest, Tyiva gave a shrug of her shoulders. “As you can probably guess I am a bit of a traveler myself. New lands would be of interest and could benefit this world.” Belrea had already shown up so why not these lands?

Kyril let out a soft sigh of frustration, “Because my mother’s connections sent men overseas already. If any of the traders had returned by now we would have received some sort of trinkets or something from the new lands.” It had only been a few moons since the new lands had been announced, rumors of the race who lived underwater floating through the markets for days before finally being addressed by higher ranked officials.
“Why do you think you would travel there as well?” Kyril studied the Alkidike, her amber gaze curious. If this Alkidike was a traveler indeed then it would make sense that she would be interested in the new lands. It was just strange to see an Alkidike so willing to leave her homelands. At least it seemed strange to Kyril from what little knowledge she had of the other race.

“I see.” Tyiva studied the hybrid with interest. She had seen the fine clothing that the girl wore, but she hadn’t thought of her to have such connections. Was her mother an Oban noble then? That would definitely explain the mixed blood. Still, if nothing had arrived on the merchant ships yet then there was still time. Some Sisters had already left for the new lands and there would be time for more to cross overseas. Would she join them? It was a good question indeed, “I do not really know what I want to do about these new lands just yet.” She admitted quietly.

“Why not go?” Kyril shifted over so that she could browse the silks that the Alkidike was standing next to, “You say you are a traveler so why not go and explore? I know if I didn’t have my trade here in Oba then I would be sorely tempted to see what these new lands are about.” The best she could do was use her mother’s connections to find out more about the new lands and to listen to rumors in the marketplace. Perhaps one day in the far future she would venture overseas but that would be long after the new lands had been explored by the first waves of adventurers. Other than that Kyril had no interest in being drowned by any unfriendly new races.

Tyiva had been expecting the question but it still took her by surprise when her first thought was of a certain Oban woman, “I have my reasons.” She finally answered quietly, “I have someone who I can’t leave behind and I have certain things to resolve within my own family. Going overseas to this Kahikana would be a journey which would take time and to waste time right now is something which I cannot afford to do.” What if her friend forgot about her in their year apart? Adding another year would only complicate matters more. A light flush decorated the Alkidike’s pale cheeks before she peered towards the hybrid who was browsing through the store’s wares, “You mentioned trade? If I may ask what do you mean?”

Smirking Kyril gave some coins to the vendor before placing the fine azure silk into her bag, “Sounds like some serious reasons. I’m surprised you are wasting time listening to the market gossip then.” Though she supposed it was a good way to gather information if the Alkidike was interested in the new lands but couldn’t travel. After all wasn’t that also her own other reason for being in the market today?
“My trade? Ah, I’m a glass artisan.” She answered casually, “Nothing as exciting as the explorers going to Kahikana but I much prefer being here with my trade than venturing into unknown lands.”

“Ah, yes. If I had a trade then I suppose it would make sense to stay and listen to the rumors of Kahikana then go there also.” Replied Tyiva with a small smile, “I don’t consider it a waste if any of the information was even slightly true. I may not venture to the new lands but I enjoy learning about them.” Eventually the rumors would become more solid once the first wave of adventurers came back from Kahikana. That much she knew was true.
“Glass artisan?” She raised a brow, “What exactly does that entail?”

“Fair enough.” Kyril smiled. This Alkidike was far different from what she had expected of the race. She was fairly charismatic for a jungle warrior, “I make things out of glass. Here…” Pursing her lips she moved through her bag and carefully removed a piece that was wrapped with silks, “I made this one recently and was going to try to sell it soon. What do you think?”

Tyiva let out a slight gasp as she took the delicate piece and held it up towards the sunlight, “It’s beautiful.” She whispered quietly as she studied the amber lotus that had some crimson and pink embedded into the petals, “How do you manage such fine features?” It was so strange, had the hybrid been to Aisha? Tyiva carefully gave the lotus back to the hybrid, “It looks like one of our blooms almost…” She whispered quietly, “You said you were selling it?”
The image made her heart ache for home. It was a reminder of her roots and why she wouldn’t be traveling to Kahikana just yet. This time the journey would be left to other Sisters so that they could report back to her people. Instead her gaze continued wandering towards the bloom thinking about how it also held Oban colors. Perhaps it was a sign….a sign that she could trust her heart this time.

“Does it really? I based it on one of our water flowers but then I got a bit more creative by expanding the petals.” Kyril smiled, a flush of delight decorating her cheeks, “Since you like it I will gladly give it to you. As a token of thanks for the interesting conversation about the new lands. If you need anything else I have a shop further down in the artisan district.” A warmth blossomed in her own chest at the Alkidike’s response to her work. She would gladly give the piece away after seeing such love and appreciation for her work.
It was nice to see that she had made a connection while browsing the market for rumors about Kahikana. For Kyril it felt like a really productive day and a reminder of why she wanted to stay in Oba. She would pursue her passions for art here and let others explore the new lands. Hopefully they too would come back with new trinkets and other things to inspire Kyril’s craft in the near future.
