Life in the barrens wasn't for the weak. and day after day travelling with the hot sun on his back reassured Mirsad's notion that he was strong. His family - mother, sister, brother - were all better than those soft weaklings that resided in Homewood, cowering under the shade of their trees while the rest of Vykeli withered away. This endless stretch of scorching sand was the real world, the world Mirsad and his siblings had been born into, and Mirsad was glad to be part of it. His young feet were sore from the heat seeping into them, but he tried his hardest not to limp as he followed in his mother's shadow.

They were looking for a new source of water. The little spring they'd been using dried up the previous afternoon, and Mirsad was parched. Well, a little. Not really. He was fine and he'd continue to be fine until Shappa led them to a new watering hole. He could go a few hours without a cool drink, no problem. His keen, green eyes scanned the horizon for any sign of water, but it was all a blazing haze of wavering hot air. Mirsad snorted his displeasure and snapped his tail against his brother's side.

He had no doubt they'd find water, but in the meantime, the trek was long and boring.

"Do you want to play a game?" Mirsad ducked against Naiche and lowered his voice to a conspiratorial whisper. He didn't have any particular game in mind, but with only the four of them out here, it would probably be something to annoy Muhjah. Those were the best games. "We could play mirage."

Mirage was a decent way of passing the time and an ever better means of improving their skills at deception. Pretending they spotted something out in the barrens and seeing if they could convince Muhjah or Shappa to believe either one of them. Naiche might have a better idea, and if he did, Mirsad was all ears.

Click to show. With the whole family on the hunt for a new source of water, Naiche walked alongside his twin in the shadow of their mother, head slightly bowed better shield his eyes from the unrelenting sun. He kept his eyes skimming the heat hazy horizon for any sign of actual greenery or a source of water. To try to help the ever increasing dryness of his throat, Naiche was exercising how in depth he could get his imagination going with thoughts of the odd mouthwatering treat. It helped a little, but it wouldn't compare to cool, clear water. He'd deal. This wasn't exactly the first time the family had to seek out water after all. They always ended up finding what they needed. The little buck wasn't even thinking about being worried yet.

The switch of his twin's tail against his side drew his attention. Angling his head, Naiche turned an ear to fully face Mirsad. Ooh, a game could be good. At the very least it'd help pass the time until a new spring was found, or an oasis, or perhaps a cave system. The cooler temperatures in caves seemed to collect water, hidden away from the blazing heat. A little crooked grin tugged at his features before he shook himself back to a more neutral expression, to be safe in case Muhjah happened to glance over.

"Let's do," He whispered back, his volume scarcely above that of a breath. Hm! Mirage could be fun and it'd be all the easier to do while crossing open desert. Of course, along a similar vein, there was the game of memory. Suggesting a false shared memory or past joint activity that never actually happened, then keep adding on details and the like until the third party, typically Muhjah in situations such as this, also "remembered". The reveal that everything was in fact a lie was entirely optional. There was the added difficulty of their mother being present. She had the potential to just outright go 'No, that never happened' or 'We did no such thing'. Tricky. Of course, if they could convince Shappa the truth of their 'memories' that'd be all the more impressive.

"Mirage is good. Unless you'd prefer memory." There were other games, but the scorching heat and the nagging thirst drive most of their repertoire from his mind. Naiche made a point to scan the entirety of the watery looking horizon in all directions around them as a show of looking for water, but really mirages. "Get us started," For whatever game it may be. "And I'll talk you up."

While her offspring may not know the paths they took, Shappa was very aware of where she was going, the destination and how to get there. The benefit of growing up in an inhospitable place and having to figure it all out meant she knew the best places to find water and when, how to read the weather and were ideal caves where that remained uninhabited. However, she didn’t allow herself to get too comfortable because it was the barrens after all and it could still surprise you. Which meant keeping a plan B and some times C in the wings. And as those with the gift of healing grew stronger, it meant more creatures would appear that weren’t there before.

Her ears rotated to take in any sounds and process them. One flicked back, a sign that she could hear the boys talking but not what. They always seemed to be up to something and usually it was no good. A glance down reassured her that the odd one out was still nearby. She clung to Shappa’s shadows while trying to stay away from her brothers. The girl foal was getting smarter to her brothers’ tricks but was still quite young and innocent. Shappa wasn’t overly fond of how clingy the small she foal got, seemed more interested in trying to please her and not learning how to survive. Shappa let off a small sigh as she surveyed the horizon.

There wasn’t much out there and luckily that meant no immediate dangers. The foals didn’t know, but their destination just happened to be a cave system this time and it contained a steady source of water. Shappa could choose for them to stay there but they wouldn’t learn anything about survival and only how to grow soft. Survival wasn’t all about harsh conditions and getting by the grit of your teeth, it was also knowing your limits and knowing when to take advantage of places like this cave. If they kept up on this pace, they may make it there just after dark.

The sun felt like a hot iron burning into ever spot of her backside. Mother had said it was because she was black pelted and the sun loved to dive in and hide in dark places. Muhjah pressed in close to her mother as she dared to without getting a sharp reprimand about personal space. It helped with her back a bit but the ground remained hot and seeped into her delicate hooves. Glancing up she saw her mother’s ear flick back, Muhjah glanced behind her. Her twin brothers were walking close enough to be conspiratorial.

She squinted in suspicion as she knew they liked to constantly play games that ended up putting her in the cross hairs. It made life miserable and felt like living between a rock and a hard place. Mother wouldn’t help her against anything they tended to do. It was to make her more resilient against adversity. Gullible was something she was quickly loosing as a personality trait that’s for sure. She left of a soft snort, mostly to clear the dust from her nose but also out of disdain for whatever the numbskulls behind her had plotted.

She didn’t entirely blame them, life out here was dull for the most part and not often did something exciting happen. The walks between water sites and food sources had them bored out of their minds. Muhjah tended to sink into her thoughts, she had to hope her mother never caught her. Shappa would always say to stay alert, being deep in thought was for safe places. This wasn’t a safe place despite there not being anything for miles. Anything could happen out here. Muhjah was slowly perfecting the art of appearing alert but being miles away in her thoughts. Wishing for excitement, for a break in the horizon, for seeing a tree that was alive. Mother had mentioned places that were so green but she was forbidden to go there or they where places too close to the forbidden place, Homewood.

Mirsad's ears flipped up with excitement at Naiche's mention of memory, a particular favorite of his, but mother always made things tricky. At least with mirage the brothers had the opportunity to back out and say they were wrong all along, it was just a figment of their imagination. Once you started memory, the only good way to end it was by winning. Mirsad chewed his tongue, thick and gummy from the heat, while he considered their options. If they could trick mother as well as Muhjah, Mirsad would make the rest of the journey sustained on satisfaction alone. That thought in mind, he made his decision.

"Ugh," he croaked, raising his voice enough to be heard by the whole family. "I think this walk is even longer than the last time we went looking for water."

Mirsad made a show of picking his hooves up high and peering underneath them, his nose wrinkled with distaste. "At least this time there's no scorpions chasing our tails. Remember last time, Naiche? When we flipped up that rock look for grubs and a whole nest of the nasty, stinging brutes came scuttling out all angry?"

The most important trick to Memory was to draw inspiration from something that really did happen. Naiche and Mirsad had gone digging for grubs during a rest on their last long trek, but there hadn't been hide nor tail of a single scorpion. They'd certainly seen the pinchy bugs before, hard not to when scorpions were one of the few things that could survive out in this heat, but they'd learned not to stick their noses near them when their legs were still of newborn wobbles.

Mirsad forced himself to feign disinterest in Muhjah and mother, even as he noticed ears flicking back in his direction. He wasn't very good at hiding his tells yet, best not to give them any more hints of what they were up to than what couldn't be helped.

User Image - Blocked by "Display Image" Settings. Click to show.Ahh, memory it was then! Okay! So, Mirsad was wanting the extra challenge of having to work around their mother's presence. He could work with that. They'd just have to try to be all the more convincing. Naiche was already wearily bobbing his head in sympathy as his twin was finishing his initial statement. Such a terribly long trek to make, but it was simply the way of their world. They would endure, for failing to do so was death.

Naiche made a point to give a full body shudder at the 'memory'. "It was terrible!" His next question was posed vaguely. Mostly in a conversational tone towards his twin, but left it open should their mother have anything she wished to add on the subject, because she was certainly listening, and as a subtle invite to try to draw Muhjah more into their discussion. "Are scorpions usually that territorial or do you think there were babies we missed when we flipped that rock over? They were pretty big." He shook head head, seemingly to drive the vision of the bugs from his mind. "Ugh! They were all glinting eyes, quick, scuttling legs, and sharp, black claws." An extra beat was spent on the last three words. Sharp. Black. Claws. Little specifics, you know, to help make it seem all the more real. "I remember, Mirsad. We got so lucky. Good thing that had only been a stop and not where we had to stay, huh? Could you imagine?" Focusing his attention on his twin helped keep him focused on the game, if he got too curious about watching for their sister or mother's reaction, it'd probably give away the whole thing! He wouldn't let that happen if he could help it.

Both of Shappa’s ears had swung backwards at this point. The boys had gone from quietly talking to being loud enough for all four of them to hear. Shappa’s face deadpanned as the boys talked about encountering scorpions. Sure, they lived out here but she doubt that any had been where they stopped. Scorpions, while small, could be potentially dangerous, especially if there are a bunch of them. She didn’t recall any such excitement from them at any of their recent stops, suspicious.

Well if that is what they wanted to do to pass the time, so be it. Making up stories wouldn’t hurt anyone. Just as long as they didn’t get too loud. Last thing Shappa needed was attracting attention out here. While it was important to learn survival skills in all kinds of situations, encountering something or someone dangerous with three foals is asking for it. Unknowingly, Shappa had picked up her pace, they needed to quit dawdling and keep going.

“Keep up,” was all she said to the three foals.

Meanwhile, Muhjah was keeping an eye on her twin brothers. They weren’t all the old yet, but it wasn’t long ago that she fell for everything they tried to pull. She’d been growing more suspicious of them and anything they say but sometimes her brain wasn’t entirely sure. Their tale of encountering scorpions could very well be true. Her mind wasn’t sure though, it was suspicious but at the same time, it was possible that her brothers encountered scorpions. They did live out here.

She kept looking back at them as they spoke, voices raised more so she and mother could hear. As she looked at them, they seemed more interested in talking to each other than mother or herself. Muhjah squinted her eyes at them. Mother started walking faster, telling them to “keep up”. Muhjah didn’t like this, it was too hot to walk faster and now she was having a hard time staying in Shappa’s shadow. The sun burned her backside as she fell behind. She glared at her twin brothers.

“Since when did you find a scorpion nest? I don’t remember them, why do you?” she hissed at the boys. The sun made her ill tempered and she couldn’t wait to reach where ever they were going.

"I think they eat their babies," Mirsad laughed as if absolutely delighted by the idea. "Maybe they were mad because we were gonna take their meals!" There was so little to eat out here it made just as much sense to be aggressive over a few scraps of baby scorpion as it was to be mad about defending their potentially disturbed offspring. Either way, Mirsad didn't actually know what made scorpions angry, and it was good to be uncertain about things like that anyway. If he bounced about with his chest puffed out, Muhjah was bound to figure out what they were doing.

Speaking of...

Mirsad snapped an ear in his sister's direction. "You don't remember?" he shot a wide eyed look, agog, to Naiche, then jerked his attention back to Muhjah. "How do you not remember? They were almost all over you too!"
