Things had not been going according to plan for him and if he wasn't careful his frustrations were going to get the better of him. It was through the simple grace of his own personal hobbies that he had schooled himself in to some semblance of patience. It wasn't a pretty patience and it was a very thin patience, but he wasn't screaming out in frustration either. One thing was or sure though, if it were possible to sense an emotion though, he would have been radiating with irritation.

It had been this way ever since that feline had 'woke him up'... Hell the cat had said that he'd know what to do instinctively and it seemed that he was right, the only problem was that with that instinct also came the knowledge that what he was trying to do was failing. Nevertheless, he had settled on the assumption that practice would make perfect and eventually it would start working.

...Except it wasn't.

He would have been easy to find for anyone who happened to be in the area, granted, he'd specifically chosen this area for how quiet and isolated it was, but stranger things had happened and he'd stopped saying certain things were impossible. Nevertheless, to anyone who might be prowling nearby he would have been an obvious spot. After all, it was hard to ignore an explosion or three at random intervals...

Cybele had learned fairly early on that just because someplace was seemingly abandoned didn't mean it was safe. It was true that she probably found more agents on a night to night basis in alleyways close to people they could drain from. It was also true that some of the nastiest things, the starseedings and the youmafications and the all out brawls happened further out where nobody could hear the screams.

Because of this, Cybele tried to mix up her hunting grounds. She had decent luck hunting youma downtown and better luck in the parks, but sometimes she'd go out to abandoned warehouses and to construction sites, to empty sports fields and to the dark corners of nature reserves. She was doing it more often now that she was an eternal and could cover a decent corner of the city in a single night.

Tonight it paid off and she felt an aura in the distance. It was a basic senshi, not an enemy, but she would have gone towards it anyway. She'd been getting a lot better about the whole networking thing, and she'd found she didn't mind being a mentor.

However, the faint sound of an explosion in the distance sent Cybele's approach into a full sprint. That wasn't good.

It didn't take her too long to find him. She was good at tracking, and he was definitely dressed like a senshi. There were a few trails of settling dust around him, but no other signs of anything dangerous.

She stepped forwards. "Are you all right?"

A disturbance and a ping on his psyche that he wasn't as of yet familiar with. Already on high alert the senshi had already swung round to face Cybele by the time she'd gotten her query out. A silence followed, if only because he needed an additional moment or two to process who was in front of him, but eventually he did seem to comprehend that what he'd felt was indicative of a friendly target.

...But was he ok?

"Physically? I'm fine," he replied with a loose shrug, though the tense jaw and otherwise exasperated glint in his eye seemed to indicate that he wasn't entirely satisfied. A quick glance over would at least reassure her that there was certainly nothing wrong with him, but it was politer to be direct than pose riddles to a stranger... At least in his eyes anyway.

"Magical boy wise, I'm just broken," he stated bluntly, if not scathingly, and held out his arms wide to glance at the dust on himself and the piles that had now taken to resting around him. "This isn't really supposed to be something I can do if the cat was right about my instincts," he pointed out and shook his head.

"Pretty sure if my gut is right I'm not supposed to be explosive," he muttered.

Another momentary pause followed and then he squinted more directly at the senshi, lowering his arms as he actually took time to consider who was in front of him. She was like him for want of a better word, stronger, but perhaps she'd be able to at least clarify something for him.

"Or is this just how it's supposed to be for the first few weeks and he just didn't warn me about that bit?"

In the not-present Brioche's defence, the Mauvian hadn't really known what awakening someone his age would do, but that didn't make it any less frustrating to the new senshi.

Once it was clear there was no immediate danger, Cybele took a longer moment to look over the damage. It was mostly just the dust, and a bit of a ring on the ground that indicated the explosion, but she guessed it had been much more interesting over here about a minute ago. She then turned her attention to the man, giving herself a full two seconds to appreciate that his outfit showed off those abs before she met his gaze with a cocked smile.

"You look like a magical boy to me," she said, stepping a bit closer. "Not a disaster." It was a bit strange meeting a new senshi who was her own age. Lately, they'd all seemed so much younger than she was, and she'd almost been expecting to run into another child, but that was all right. She'd still do what she could to help him.

"If you're only a few weeks in, you're brand new to all this. It takes a while to start to understand everything." She settled in, her smile going steadier as she folded her hands in front of her, and she tried to keep her voice a bit quieter, not wanting him to panic. It was true she couldn't quite relate about the magic. Hers had always been an instinct, as he said, but she'd seen something vaguely similar once before.

"If you have any questions, I should be able to answer them, and I can try to help with the magic as well, but perhaps we should start with the basics." She offered a hand. "I'm Cybele, Senshi of the Hunt. It's nice to meet you."

He gave her the side eye when she reassured him he still looked magical, while she was probably being friendly he wasn't in the mood and did have the capacity to be juvenile at brief moments despite his age. It didn't last long though and after a few moments he simply shook his head, it wasn't her fault that he didn't seem to be able to control this stuff.

"Athalia," he said finally, though he did pause as though attempting to recall the rest of it. "Hercules Beetles," he added after his mind did finally catch up with him and remind him of precisely what his calling was. Based on what he was supposed to draw influence from it shouldn't really have come at any surprise that he was confident that 'explosions' weren't necessarily his thing.

...But did he have any questions she could help with?

She'd said what he'd already heard before, that it all took a while, but was there anything else he could actually pick her brain over? He knew about the youma and he'd been flicking through the odd little phone he'd been given for intel on other things as well.

Start with the basics. She had a point with this one and it was one he could both acknowledge and respect.

"How about you tell me how you work your magic," he said finally and motioned to her. "If it comes naturally to you then maybe there's something I'm missing, could be simple, I just can't see it," he admitted. Given she was clearly radiating with considerably more strength than he was she was bound to have some experience and maybe she'd say or reference something he had might have been ignoring... a cue or something.

"Unless you're about to inform me you do blow up, in which case, we may just end up going round in circles," he added, a hint of humour in his tone.

Cybele saw the way he was looking at her and took half a step back, deciding to replace her typical introductory curtsy with a simple introductory nod. “Nice to meet you,” she said. Hercules beetles didn’t give her that much information, as her animal knowledge became a bit sparser when it came to insects, but she could see where his frustration came from as she was fairly certain beetles didn’t explode, although silently she had to admit that explosions might be a bit more interesting than say, crawling on trees.

Then she pursed her lips, trying to think about how to explain magic. It was magic, something that didn’t follow most rules or make complete sense. It was something that had been part of her life for years now, something just came to her whenever she spoke it into being.

“Words,” she said. “Basic senshi magic is all about the words. There are a few other things we can do that you very much have to think through and feel in your heart,” she gave a dramatic little flutter of her hand at that, since it sounded a bit silly and in some ways it was. “But with the magic you mean, I just have to say the words and really put all the focus into that. It’s a bit like powering up but without the pen. For example-”

She held her arms out in front of her and gave a brighter smile than strictly necessary before she called out a carefully articulated, “Cybele Hunter’s Grace!” There was a sudden brightness before a transparent, faintly glowing bow appeared in her hands.

“Now, my magic happens to help people focus,” she said. “I was able to use it to help a knight get to space once,” which was its own story. Would he even know about knights or space at three weeks? “And we could see if it helps you, if you’d like?”

He was not aware that he could get in to space and in those moments, his expression was probably a bit of a picture. If he been hadn't baffled by the other parts of his newfound abilities, traversing space had certainly thrown a spanner in the works and left him with yet more questions. For now though he did have the capacity to park that line of thought for the time being, he had another mystery to solve first that involved figuring out how to use his own abilities properly.

The manner in which she had summoned her bow had been so natural and clean, but in the grand scheme of things she hadn't done anything all that different than what he'd done with his. With that in mind, he had to wonder if perhaps there was more to his difficulties than what he'd first anticipated, or even what Brioche had anticipated. Brioche had had theories but no immediate answers but perhaps...

"Focus," he repeated as he glanced towards the magical bow and then back towards Cybele. "As in find my way, or simply concentrate more clearly?" he asked. His mind could certainly be clouded with frustration on occasions but even when he'd been calm he'd still had these issues. If that bow could potentially help him in some manner then he was open to being shot by it. At least he assumed he'd end up shot with it, what else was a bow supposed to do other than to look decorative?

He would be back to touch on the space travel eventually but in terms of priorities, that really was something further down the list. Suffice to say that he was not particularly useful to anyone other than himself in his current state!

Cybele pressed her lips together. This was supposed to be about the basics. She most likely should not have opened the topic of space.

Time was ticking on her magic, though, and she pushed that thought away for the moment. "Concentration," she said, glancing down at the bow in her hands. "It's for hunting and combat, not soul searching, although some people say it helps clear their head." There was much stronger emotional manipulation magic out there, but that was not what she'd been gifted with. If her magic didn't help him, she could start going through her contacts.

"It's probably easiest to show you," she said, gaze shifting to the ground for a moment. "I'm sorry. I know it looks a bit strange." It was why she'd moved away from using her basic magic after her first upgrade. Shooting allies, even with a boost, could be intimidating and even distracting.

It seemed like the best option here, though, so she drew the string back and loosed the arrow at him, as quick and no-nonsense as possible.

Epine de Rose
Sailor Scout Attack: Hunter's Grace
A phantom bow forms in Cybele's hands. She shoots the bow at a ally, or straight up in which case it will target herself. When the arrow reaches the target, it splits and they are covered in its strange light. They are suddenly filled with concentration, their senses are sharpened slightly and their speed increases slightly. This state lasts for 30 seconds. It is useful for tracking and makes dodging attacks easier. While physical and mental strength is not increased, a fast attack at high concentration tends to do more damage than a normal one. She can also use the bow to threaten people, though if she does not shoot it after 30 seconds, it fades, using a use of the attack. She can use this attack twice per battle. If she is not targeting herself, she has to actually aim the bow. A knowledgeable enemy could knock it off course quite easily or even intercept it, gaining the benefits.

Fortunately he didn't flinch nor duck for cover as she lifted her bow and, for want of a better word, shot at him. He had been expecting to be struck, but on this occasion it appeared that it merely split apart and he found himself surrounded in light. Was he glowing? It should have come at no surprised that he elected to give himself a thorough inspection, though even outside of combat he could feel something.

Everything seemed to come into more focus, things seemed sharper and though not entirely accurate he felt a touch lighter. Whatever she had done to him had honed something and he surmised that in battle this would be rather useful. All things considered, if he was able to hear just that much better with this, then a more subtle attack would be much easier to hear and account for.

...And she'd done that with what looked like next to no effort.

So that was what she meant by instinct, eh?

"To be fair," he finally lowered his hand and cast his gaze towards her with a smirk. "I had assumed I was going to get shot, I haven't really seen many bows used as a boomerang," he pointed out. his tone had just a slight edge to it, a teasing tone that was boiling under the surface.

"Although stranger things have happened lately so maybe you do use it for that some of the time."

He paused.

"I can safely say when I do that it doesn't always end up quite so clean," he admitted.

Athalia didn't seem too shaken, and anyway the magic took hold soon enough. The actual enhancement wasn't as flashy as the summoning of the bow, but Cybele thought she could see something subtly different about the look in his eyes. It brought a smile to her face. Just a small one, but it was there. She liked showing people what she could do.

"Not a boomerang, but it's not quite an arrow, either," she said, shrugging. He seemed to be in better spirits and her tone was lighter, too. "I do try to warn people."

Then she tilted her head and raised one eyebrow a few inches. "All right. It's your turn," she said. She took a step back and shifted her weight so that she could spring back again if needed. The beetle on his brooch had pincers that looked sharp enough, so even if all went well she wouldn't be too surprised if some sort of nasty, insect-themed attack came flying at her.

"Let's see if that helped. If not, I can get a look at what the problem is." If he wanted anything beyond generic advice, then she would need something to go off of beyond explosions in the distance.

Any other day and in any other time period when he could have gotten his abilities under control, he would have been advising her that backing away or preparing to run from him was the exact opposite of what she should be doing. However in the given circumstances he would have conceded that at the moment a healthy dose of caution was warranted. Perhaps that was why he was so irritated, instinctively he knew that his power was supposed to protect and yet the safest thing people could do right now was run from it.

Nevertheless he gave a small shrug and with very little flourish and more of a stomp and a squaring of the shoulders, he performed what should have been his own attack. Large, ethereal scarab wings were pulled from the aether, erecting what looked like two large shields in front of the senshi. Interestingly it didn't look like he could move during it, once they were up they needed to be held up and he needed to stand his ground.

...For once, they didn't explode.

Unfortunately, what probably should have lasted for significantly more time lasted mere seconds before they shattered into glittering dust and dissipated into the aether they'd come from. Whatever his issue was, it didn't look like the connection he should have had to his planet was what it should have been, but how that was supposed to be 'corrected' was beyond him at the moment.

He did look relieved that he hadn't been flung half way across the area though, evidently that was happening far more frequently than the simple case of the correct effect showing up and simply vanishing before it had done anything useful!

Senshi Attack Go!
Sailor Scout Attack: Herculean Shield
Radius: Self (Personal Buff, 180 Radial)
    Duration: 25 Seconds
Limitations: This shield can be hard to break for other basic stage characters, moderately breakable by 2nd stage characters and easily breakable by 3rd stage characters. This shield will fall much more quickly in a concentrated attack by numerous opponents regardless of their rank.
Number of Casts: 3 Times per Battle
    Full Details:
Athalia draws upon his source to shield himself from the next barrage of assaults. In calling out to the source, he erects two large, ethereal scarab wing carapaces to shield incoming damage.

This carapace will protect him from significant damage for the duration of the ability, ensuring he can weather significant damage before it's necessary to retreat; any allies that take cover behind him will be shielded for the duration of the assault.

The shield is no more than 7ft high and 6ft in diameter at any given time.

This ability can be countered by flanking Athalia as it's radius is a frontal 180 cone; his back remains exposed.

Cybele stayed on the defensive even as the magic was going seemingly all right. While the shields lasted, she looked over their slight shimmer and the way that they were clearly beetle wings. Cybele's eyes lit up and a bit of a real smile shone through, even as the magic faded much quicker than it was probably meant to.

"You can do it!" she said, finally relaxing a bit. "And shields? I don't think I've ever seen anything quite like that before." The mentor's encouragement wasn't completely gone from her voice, but the excitement was real.

Some forms of magic had become normal to her over time. It had been eight years, after all. She'd been a senshi for a third of her life. She no longer spooked at youma or batted an eyelash at a talking cat, but there was something about seeing another senshi's magic for the first time that was different. It was always so unique, so personal. It brought her back to the very first time she'd summoned her own bow.

The bright smile lasted for a few moments, but then she stepped forwards again with a more serious expression. "So, how was that?" she asked. This wasn't quite like the first time she'd tried her magic. That was the thing. He was obviously still struggling, and she wanted to do what she could to help. "Did that feel different than before? Did the focus help, or was it something else?"

The lack of explosions had probably said something about control.

Well someone was happy! It was actually quite a pleasant feeling to see someone else come across as genuinely excited by what they'd seen. He might have been happy that it had worked, but she had seemed to appreciate it for something else entirely. Maybe he would have that particular feeling in time, almost a sense of pride that someone had achieved something, you know?

However when she mentioned she hadn't really seen his type of magic before he did lift his brow, that wasn't something he had really been expecting, if he was honest.

"Really, not at all?" he asked with a touch of curiosity. "What can we ordinarily do, or I suppose a better question would be, what are we normally known for doing?" he asked. It would be just his luck that he didn't get the shimmering bows, swords or laser beams but in the grand scheme of things if he could get this shield to work reliably then he was probably going to find it to be an invaluable resource.

"And it felt...about the same as when I explode," he added, a shred of guilt in his tone.

He paused briefly and then shrugged.

"The Mauvian who woke me up... he mentioned something about my age," he figured he might as well tell her, it wasn't exactly a secret that he wasn't a spring chicken. "As he put it I'm a bit like marinated meat," he coughed at that one. "I've spent so long marinating that when I was finally taken out to cook the flavour had set in pretty well..."

"I think he was trying to say I'm late to the party and whatever we do to do this," he waved at himself and then Cybele. "Isn't as easy for me to do as, well, you." He wrinkled his nose at that and then sighed. "Although he never did tell me how my age had anything to do with it, was I supposed to have a coming of age ceremony when I was younger and I missed the invite?"

Somehow the 'yer a wizard Wilder!' probably wouldn't have gone down well even back then, but Brioche probably could have done with explaining the 'ideal' ages and how he was very much not at that ideal age.

"If it helps it does feel nice when the damn magic works, even if it feels like I'm just about there and then something disconnects like I've just been hung up on." He admitted. That was about as accurate as he could get in relation to how the shorter duration felt...an explosion was probably more comparable to a static shock if he were to try and describe it.

...A static shock with significant feedback.

Cybele pursed her lips. "I'm not sure if there's really a theme or a usual," she said. "It tends to be fairly unique. I see a lot of emotional manipulation, but that's probably just the people I happen to run into." She'd mentored the Senshi of Moods, once, and then Apathy had become one of her closest allies.

"There are all the kinds of boosts you can think of, and sometimes there are proper elemental attacks." Shields certainly fit into the category of things that she might expect senshi magic to do, but it was still different to think about it and to see it in person. It would have been nice to have a bit longer to see exactly how the wings fit together or to see what happened when it was hit with an punch, but that could wait.

The smile slowly shifted back to something more contained. "Sorry," she said, much quieter. "I just find magic so fascinating."

She did squint a bit when he mentioned his age, and especially at the metaphor about marinade. Was that something that happened? She had noticed that most senshi awakened younger than, say, knights, but she'd never given it too much though.

She shook her head when he asked if she'd missed something, glancing towards the sky as if the stars had answers. They did for some people, apparently, but she'd never been one of them. "I don't know very much about rituals or ancient knowledge. I'm a huntress. I fight things," she tilted her head, "But I have been using my powers since I was sixteen."

The stars were silent tonight, too, so she looked back to him. "'Keep trying' probably isn't the answer you're looking for, but if it's some sort of over saturation, or a minor disconnect, that's probably what it will take. Otherwise, we can find another cat."

There was a chance he'd have to live with the volatile magic, but she didn't want to discourage him when he seemed to be making some progress.

"No, by all means, it would be nice to have a fan," he held up his hands, palms forward and smiled. "I'd be an fan of my own things too if they worked," he pointed out.

Nevertheless, the array of abilities that their kind could have did come as a bit of a surprise to him. If they could be quite so colourful in their abilities then why did they seem so scattered? Based on even the vague understanding that they could do almost anything, a squad of senshi could be particular impressive in a coordinated response. He did have to wonder if perhaps he needed to make a point of sourcing out those who were willing to team up and then, at the very least, there would be a group capable of assembling to deal with far more than just one or two Nega.

Take Cybele for example, she was more than capable, but if she didn't have to worry about being hit? He had to wonder just how much she could achieve with the right support behind her.

"Well I can safely say I'm about eleven years too late for that," he concluded as he was provided with the age of her awakening. The mention of rituals though did make him purse his lips, Brioche hadn't really gone in to detail about that either but he had vaguely mentioned that perhaps there was something that could be done to correct it. "And what you are is practical, I wouldn't apologise for not being a walking encyclopedia," he added with a wry smile.

"And you're right it's not really the quick-fix answer anyone likes to hear but when things are important they're rarely that easy to tape back together," he mused.

"Maybe if I'm right where that power's supposed to come from it'll work more smoothly?" he lifted a brow. "Like plugging something directly into a socket?" He was theorising of course and there was no guarantee it was right, but if he did have the capacity to reach the place where his power came from then at the very least maybe he could locate that 'socket'.

"Or... Does it not work like that?" he asked. At this stage in her life he was under the assumption she may have visited her own source at least once, but he wouldn't blame her if she hadn't either... Perhaps her priorities lay here and returning to that was just a passing curiosity.
