I dont know if its just me, but I have a sneaking suspicion that there is a subliminal meaning in Batou's dog, Gabriel. He showed up in the first movie in the one scene where the Major is on the boat and she heads under the bridge and there he is, looking at her. Of course he is in the second movie as well, and i think there is a hidden meaning somewhere related to Gabriel. I guess im just wondering if im the only one with this suspicion, and if not, is there anyone who has any sort of idea there might be behind the cute little basset hound.

I didn't know Batou had a dog? Or maybe I didn't notice it when I was watching the movie? Hm...

Yeah you probly wouldnt know it if you have just seen the first movie, but yeah batou has a cute little basset hound. In the first movie he was seen on the bridge in the scene where the major is on her way to work and she is on the boat...he is seen in a lot of the scenes in the second movie though.

Think about the dogs name, Gabriel. The religions and names associated with it in the past have all been growth religions from the previous.
Hebrew Faith Tradition - Christian Faith Tradition - Muslim Faith Tradition.
In all three religions Gabriel is the one chosen to pass along a message.
You really should just consider the dog as a foil for Batou's lingering sense of humanity.

The fact that Bato has a dog and cares very much for it could be a part of him tring to cling on to his humanity since he has a lot of cyberization he might feel that having somthing there to reafrim his place as human. and sice in the tv show Bato chooses to use the same tachikoma all the time, could be due to the fact that he has a dog and is partial to the conection he shares with the ones close to him. so he takes good care of his dog by giving it what he sees as the best dog food the same way that he decided to not give the tachikoma synthetic oil and use natural oil, shows a sign of affection to strengthen the bond with the tachikoma that he views as his personal unit. and since the tachikomas all share their experiences the personal bond that he developed with the single unit now has become the bond that he shares with all of the tachikoma's. it could be the bond relation ship that was established with the tachikomas that acted as a catalist in their devlopment of their individuality and the oil only acted as device to create the bond and not the actual event spawning their cognative devlopment. but either way it was bato's interaction with them and mabe the dog was just to give us some incite in to who bato is so we may understand why the events happened

I think you meant:

I agree with the Batou and humanity angle. At one point in the second movie, I think Ishikawa asks Batou, Is that a clone? They don't have the real ones anymore(or something), which indicates that the dog is more real than prosthetic.
I also thought Gabriel was a funny name choice. What message would he be passing along? (the faith angle)

Batou and his hound... Personally I think it's Batou clinging onto what humanity he has left. In a world where he, along with others are consumed by cybernetic and prosthetic augmentations, Batou's relation with Gabriel, an organic dog, is an attempt to stay in touch with the remainders of what is natural within himself.
