Specterdust stood on a raised bit of land that gave her quite the vantage point just outside the ruins. Word had come down the grapevine that there was a band of cat beasts roaming the ruins, hunting her fellow noulicorns. If she managed to take at least one down, with proof, she’d win herself a fighter’s claw. What superhero wouldn’t want something like that? This wouldn’t be easy. Specter was on the small side but she at least had Kevin. She glanced towards her back, he was roosting there keeping an eye out so nothing snuck up on her. Looking forward towards the ruins, movement caught her eye and she squinted at it. There was definitely something down there. Specter quickly figured out a path to that location and leaped down from her perch, given Kevin a bit of a start but he held on.
As she got closer to the location, Specter slowed her progress and picked her footsteps carefully. Kevin kept his vigil, watching her six and glancing up every so often. Specter also would look up, eyeing anywhere a cat beast could possibly climb to. Carefully, she peered around a corner and spotted about three of them lounging in the sunlight. Hmmm, that’s too many for her. Specter doubled back through a patch of trees that used to be a park at some point. A place where the Others would go with their families to relax and bond with each other. Today, it was a place where a cat beast stalked a small grey noul doe.
Kevin sent up an alarming screech and flew up into the face of a cat beast. He distracted it long enough for Specter to spin around and dodge as it swatted Kevin away and tried to land on her. It lunged again and Specter dodged once again. Spinning around she back kicked the creature in the face causing it to yowl in pain. Kevin came down on its head and began to bite it’s ears and neck. The creature tried swatting at Kevin and rolling to dislodge him, giving Specter a chance to ram into the creature’s side. It went sprawling away but rolled back to its feet and braced itself, growling low in its throat.
Specter lowered her head, preparing for the animal to charge her. Her magic began to build and swelling within and she latched onto it. Her horn glowed green and suddenly the cat beast charged right at her. She waited til it was close enough and sent off a cloud of pollen right into its face and up its nose. It back peddled and sneezed, shaking its head and pawing at its face. It kept sneezing, trying to rid itself of the pollen, rubbing it’s eyes. Specter ran at it and rammed the creature again, sending it flying. She spun and back kicked it as it tried to blindly charge her. Kevin bit it repeatedly on the back legs and tail, grabbing at its tail. It came at her one last time and she managed to gore it in the belly with her horn. It slumped to the ground and laid motionless.
She stood there panting, braced for it to raise once again but it didn’t. Kevin kept his eyes out for its comrades to come running, but so far none showed up. Probably for the best, Specter was already winded and tired from just fighting one. “I think it’s dead,” he said to Specter after a moment. She sighed and closed her eyes for a moment and then lowered her head. “I think you’re right, Kevin. Thanks for having my back buddy.” Kevin puffed up his plumage and shook himself. “
“Scoria will want proof that we took care of this creature…. I’m not sure what proof to give her,” Specter mused allowed, although she hoped Kevin would have an answer.
Kevin tilted his head and looked up at her and then went back to his surveillance of the area. After a moment he remarked, “Could take a part of its body.”
Specter grimace, the thought was rather repulsive. She walked up to it and looked carefully at it. Quietly she bowed her head, taking a life was no laughing matter. Even though it was hunting her, that was its nature. Silently she thought, please find peace. Opening her eyes, she saw that it’s mouth was slightly open and one of its teeth had broken off. “Kevin… do you see a tooth lying around somewhere?”
Kevin looked surprised but then glanced around the area and caught sight of something in the dirt. He ran over and looked down. “Here… big tooth in the dirt,” he remarked.
Specter turned and walked over to her sidekick. He was right, there was a big tooth in the dirt, it was the same one missing from the cat beast. She must have knocked it clean out of its mouth when she kicked it in the face. “Can you pick it up please. We’ll take it to Scoria right away.”
Kevin picked up the tooth and set it in a small pouch he now wore. Then he flew up to Specter’s back and braced himself for her movements. She then turned back towards Homewood and bounded off quickly, back towards home and all the way to Scoria’s.
