And what a useful gift it had proven to be! Each morning she thanked the Grandfather Tree for choosing it for her. While she was still just learning about her magic, the gift let her take any needed risks. Today it was time for another.

She'd left her cozy little cave in Homewood and trekked to the Ruins. She'd heard many tales of what lay in the remains of the Others. All sorts of things to discover that could be of possible use. They seemed less dangerous than the Barrens, but she was sure she could still push herself.

Fleet was along for the ride, of course, perched on her haunches. The jackalope was quiet, and seemed uneasy at the site of the Other built monstrosities. "Don't worry Fleet, one day it'll all be fixed. It'll be green again." She wanted to reassure her friend.

"I know Indira. I just don't like it. Are we really going to go in there?" Fleet was usually her voice of reason, and it seemed like this trip would be no different. She could feel Fleet tensing as they got nearer to the opening she intended to slip into.

"It'll be just fine Fleet, I promise!" She ducked into the door. The building was a rusty heap, but perhaps had once housed something of use. Her hooves rang out on the metal floor. Until very suddenly they didn't. Indira plummeted. She felt Fleet leave her haunches. She let out a shrill scream. And then there was an impact. Everything went black for a moment. Or maybe more than a moment.

The doe opened her eyes, hearing Fleet squealing for her. "Indira! Indira!!!" Fleet's voice was high above. Indira moaned. Her front leg was in fierce, burning pain. It splayed in front of her at a sickening angle. Just looking at it, the doe knew she was in deep trouble. A few more scraps of floor plummeted down, landing on her, as if adding insult to injury.

She took a deep breath to steady herself, and called up to her familiar. "I'm alive Fleet. I'm hurt though. ... Badly. I'm going to need help." Just shouting had taken a lot out of her. She put her head down for a moment, thinking. Could her gift help her through this? She concentrated, pulling on her magic. Her pain didn't lessen. "Drat." There was, in fact, a limit to what this gift would do for her.

She heard Fleet above once more. "I'll find someone Indira! We'll get you out of here!" Tiny paws scrabbled against the remaining floor above, and then there was silence. Indira decided to lay her head back down and rest, doing her best to not let the pain overwhelm her.

It was a lovely day out, and it had just felt like a day for an adventure to Davvyd. He'd opted to venture out to the Ruins. Who knew what interesting trinkets one could find that might impress a pretty doe back in the Homewood. While many Nouls might be thinking of a specific doe to impress, Davvyd really just wanted to impress them all. A pretty doe should have pretty, interesting things. And as far as Davvyd was concerned all does were pretty. As he trekked on he considered his recent trip to Grandfather Tree. At long last he had his gift. And he was a vivify user! He felt a little pride on that point.

It was the job of every Noul to heal Vykeli, but it was his job to heal those Nouls who took damage in the line of duty. And it seemed like many of them did. He'd heard tales of a group who'd recently gotten into some caverns in the barrens and into some terrible fight. He'd heard that without healing they certainly would have perished. A vivify user had saved the entire party! Now that was something to aspire to! And just think of all the does that would regard him with starry eyes if he managed a feat like that! He smiled.

Lost in his own thoughts he almost didn't notice the jackalope running at full tilt. The familiar looked panicked. Beyond panicked, even. "Hey! Are you all right?" He called out brightly, wondering if perhaps this familiar was bonded to a pretty doe. Maybe he could save the day!

The brindle jackalope skidded to a halt, breathing hard. "No! I need help! My Noul needs help! Something terrible has happened!" The words all ran together, and the jackalope was breathing hard, sides heaving.

Davvyd trotted over, brow furrowed. "What happened?" He looked down at the creature, doing his best to portray a calm, confident and collected aura. Internally he was hopeful this would be his chance to save the day.

"Indira she was exploring and then the floor fell out from under her and she's wounded and we need help!" The words here close to a jumble, but Davvyd managed to follow along. He nodded, trying to be reassuring. He'd certainly understood the word 'she' and the Nouls name.

"Take me to where the accident happened. I can help. I'm a vivify user!" He puffed out his chest. This was his moment!

The familiar just nodded and took off. Davvyd loped after it. Before too long, they reached a door to a structure built by the Others. The familiar scrambled inside. Davvyd cautiously followed. It wouldn't do to have the ground come out from under him. Can't rescue anyone if you're injured yourself and all that. He could hear the familiar calling to their Noul, telling her that help had arrived.

Davvyd squinted into the darkness, and made out what appeared to be a stairwell. "I've found a way down, hold tight!" Taking extreme care with each step he inched towards the stairwell. The flooring squealed under him. he held his breath, hoping not to plummet like the Noul before him just had.

Everything hurt so much, she just wanted to close her eyes again. Was that a clopping sound? What would be causing that? She groaned, hoping that the noise wasn't more of the above floor caving in. If Fleet was back, maybe help was on the way. In a pain induced haze, she wondered how long she'd been laying her. She felt a little betrayed that her gift hadn't insulated her from all this pain. Out the in Barrens she hadn't even felt the sun beating down on her. This though, was almost too much. As she lay there, the clopping noise was getting louder. Why was that?

She raised her head slightly, only to see a buck carefully descending a stair case. She blinked. She hadn't realized there was such an easy way down. But perhaps she hadn't been paying the closest of attention. She stared up at him, hoping beyond hope he had some way out of this mess for her.

Davvyd made it to the bottom of the stairs. He hadn't liked the noises they had made, but he'd managed it. At the bottom he was greet by the sight of a very pretty doe who was also very much in need of some healing. One of her front legs was splayed out at an unnatural angle, it had to have been broken in her fall from above.

"Well, fancy finding you here. Your familiar mentioned you'd had a bit of an accident. Fear not though, I can heal you!" He tried to give his best, most winning smile. This was like a story told to foals! And he was the star. Everything was going right to plan as far as he was concerned. "I must tell you, the healing will hurt. But it will work. Then we can see about getting out of here."

He closed his eyes and concentrated. Hard. He was still a complete novice with his gift. It required his total concentration. He focused as much as he could, and directed his magic towards her leg. Even through closed eyes he could see bright light. He sensed the bone in her leg knitting itself back together, the splinters and shards pulling carefully into place. He also heard her pained gasp as it happened. He tried to block out the sound, he needed to finish the healing so they could get out of here. It wouldn't do to have to fetch someone else to finish the job.

After what felt like an eternity to him, he sensed that his primary job was done. Davvyd felt totally drained. He couldn't use another ounce of his gift if he tried. Breathing hard, he opened his eyes, and surveyed his handy work.

Blearily Indira looked up at the buck as he told her was what about to happen. It didn't prepare her for the pain, however. Before it had been a sharp, stabbing feeling. Now it felt like the bone in her leg was burning. A pained noise escaped her, utterly beyond her control. The pain seemed to go on and on and on. There was nothing else.

Until, as quickly as it had begun, it ended. No longer was her leg splayed at an unnatural angle. Her body felt tired, and sore, but she could bear it. She scrambled to her feet, without a second thought. She shook slightly. The doe tried to take a moment to collect herself, but that seemed beyond her current ability. "Thank you." She swished her tail, looking at the stairs. She just wanted to be out of this place.

If the buck had made it down them, she'd make it up them, she was quite sure. Willing herself to make the ascent, she put one hoof in front of the other. Carefully. The stairs made some objecting noises, but she kept at it. She felt like all of her energy was gone. Simply going up the stairs should take so much effort ... Even if she'd just used her gift and then had to have been healed. She was a little disappointed in herself. Clearly more practice was needed on her part. She could hear the buck climbing up behind her.

Indira finally reached the top, and carefully picked her way across the floor that had betrayed her before. Fleet was there, anxious but silent. She pushed through the door way, and stood outside once more, under the sky, safe.

The buck was right behind her. He looked ready to launch into a long speech. Indira shot him a withering look. She didn't need a lecture right now. She opted to cut him off before he could start. "Look, thanks for being in the right place at the right time. But lets pretend that this never happened, alright?" Indira nodded to Fleet and set off as fast as she could towards her home.

The buck stood stalk still. Well, this wasn't like the stories at all ... was it?
