Pello 1Pello couldn't believe it, still even to this day. It had been weeks since he saw them walking on the sands above the reefs, their skin without scales and able to live above the water. It didn't take long for the playful reef-kin to surface and provide greetings, pleased to see that they indeed understood each other. It seemed, at least initially, these land walkers came in peace.
It was so strange, foreign, and he wasn't surprised the gossip mongers of the reef quickly spread the news across all the lands.
He too would have raced to tell everyone if his mother hadn't swiftly grabbed him by the ear and reminded him of their job. They could spread news later, for now they needed to spread goods.
Pello wasn't so sure.
Still grumbling as the daylight faded above him, he traveled down to the deeper part of the sea. He was heading toward Akamu, the twilight city where his family made most of their business. Now, they expanded up to the rivers he was often responsible for his own trips, and he had to make sure he focused on documenting accordingly.
Quickly dropping off the shells and seaweed from the reefs, he agreed on a time to meet to grab his goods in turn. He had time, at least a day to catch up with the few friends he had. Already, he heard the whispers and the rumors. Most hadn't realized that they already had met the people of Tendaji, and Pello quickly decided to spread his tales to a gossiping group of younglings about the bug-eyed and crystal covered species.

Etana had been in Akamu with her parents for all of a few hours before she started to hear the whispers around town. Things were changing in their small world and becoming so much larger. Who were these people? What did they want? Could they come down to the depths? There were so many questions that she had and that she had heard from others.
But she had to find her friend first. She had read that he would be here about this time. Pello had been sending her letters filling her in on everything that had been happening and his last letter was intense. He had met them himself! She wanted to know more about it.

Pello 1A crowd of skeptical and facinated Moakai were gathering around him, the younglings' eyes wide and the adults reluctant to show their full interest. Pello was in his element, animated and bright against the darkness of the waters and the crowd.
"We didn't believe it when the river-folk told us about the sightings...it couldn't be true! They claimed there were scale-less creatures walking in the air, only needing to come to water to fill their mouths - they didn't even have gills!"
He said with emotion, acting out parts to the younglings before him.
"No fins, but rocks sprouting out of their skin...some even had eyes as black as the vents below, with skin like seaweed and glow-less bobbers that stuck out like ears!"
He laughed as he mimed it, before he became serious, "And then they appeared on the beaches, a small group who looked similar to us. They moved on two legs, were all sorts of colors...and breathed air. It didn't take long for one to catch sight of us..."

Etana had only caught the butt end of the conversation but she would notice that voice and the bright hair anywhere. She gently nudged her way through the crowd, trying to get toward the front before giving a small wave to Pello. She found him!
She was hanging on every word herself, wanting to know more. She was very excited to get a chance to grill her friend down for everything he knew. "What were they like? Did you get to talk to them? She offered.
She couldn't imagine what they would even talk about, what information they would bring. It was beyond the limits to her imagination.

Pello 3He caught Etana's wave and grinned at her playfully in return, glad to see his childhood friend but also aware he was in the middle of a big tale. He wasn't surprised she she shoved her way into the conversation, asking questions as the rest of the crowd awed and wowed, agreeing and asking as well.
"At first we didn't know what to think, so we fled under the water...but apparently they had already met the Menehune." He said with a shrug, "So they knew we were there and waited us out...it took awhile but eventually when the tide was low, we approached them from a distance."
He paused, "They were friendly and curious, but wary of us as well...They claimed they came in peace, and arrived from a great island across the sea...one that wasn't covered in much water nor had underwater people..."
He leaned back a bit, his voice lowering, "They have a big mountain in the sky, but unlike ours, it spews out hot water that glows bright red! And they have a giant beach that goes for days with no water in sight...and another mountain that is so cold all the water hardens into glass! And they fly, high in the sky!"

Etana hung on every word that Pello was saying. This was the most information and the most details she had received about these new people. Bane had been no help, but Pello seemed to know it all already in such a short amount of time.
"Do you believe them?" She asked out with wide eyes. It seemed a little far fetched, flying, glass mountains, bright red water? No one had been to their new island yet, so what if they were just spouting a bunch of nonsense to make fun of them?

Pello 4Pausing at her question, Pello let out a shrug.
"They didn't stick around much..seemed more keen to explore the area than talk to us underwater folk. But who knows...they can't breathe underwater...so they have to come from somewhere strange, right?"
He wrapped up his discussion, explaining that was as much info as they got so far and that they'd soon hear from the river and swamp leaders when more information came through. It seemed as if the bug-like ones were keen to go north anyway, not trusting to have much to do near the sea.
As the crowd dispersed to gossip some more, Pello floated to Etana with a bright grin.
"What did you think of the story? I'm pretty good, huh?"

Etana watched as the crowd started to thin out now that Pello was done speaking. He came to her next, and she was ready to start their conversation together without the crowd. "Yeah it was a good story! You tell it well." She complimented him.
"I just can't believe that there are other people out there that are so different. I kind of want to see it with my own eyes, you know?" She said to him. Obviously he had see them with his own eyes so he already knew what that was like. But Etana couldn't really imagine it.

Pello 5The elder hapuna sent his friend his trademark grin, bumping shoulders with her and preening at her complement. If he had to admit it, he was really telling the story for her - sure it was fun impressing strangers, but he loved spreading news to her because Etana seemed to soak it all in. She was an eager audience.
"Thank you, part of the job means telling a good story."
As she continued, he nodded, "There's no reason you can't. They seem to be sticking around and you can make a quick trip to the reefs without too much fuss..."

Her eyes went a little wide before focusing back in again. "Well... I mean, yeah I guess I could go see them." She was a little hesitant. She wouldn't say outright she was afraid of them, but there were bad types all over, right? She didn't know if she could tell if she should stay away from them if they were the bad sort.
"Maybe I can go with you on a trip to the reefs some day?" she offered. She had only ever been to the reefs a couple of times, just whenever her parents had to go out there, so it was unfamiliar territory to her.

Pello 6Pello watched her reaction, wondering if he was a bit forward with the recommendation. Etana was a little younger, but not too much, so why couldn't she travel a bit? It was an easy trip to the reef, and she seemed keen to see more of the world. Maybe Bane could even help her out (though he'd never seen the other Moakai travel anywhere but into the darkness of the sea).
"You're always welcome to accompany me during my trips back and forth...and stay with my family if you'd like." Was his easy reply. Their parents knew each other, so there was trust. It wasn't a bad idea at all.
"It'll give you an excuse to go see the land walkers up close..."

Etana felt more at ease with Pello's recommendation. At least she would know someone and be around people she trusted, so that was a plus. "I don't know about 'up close'" she joked, "but I could see them for myself. Even if it is just as specks on the shore." She grinned at her own lame joke and rubbed the back of her head.
"If you don't mind me tagging along I think I would like to go with you, maybe sometime soon even." Pello had been her friend since she was very small, but that didn't mean she got to see him a lot. She could feel the excitement of getting to go for a trip with her good friend start to bubble and work its way up. "I think my parents will be ok with it. Though Bane probably won't come." She made a sour face in response to her own words. She had just talked to her sister about the land walkers the other day and she was not impressed.

Pello 7The older boy grinned, his bright scales matching his bright grin as he shook his head, "Don't worry, you can sit in the reefs and see them on the beach, but if they wanted to come close it would take them so long...They suck at swimming!"
Listening to her words, he felt himself growing excited. It would be fun to spend time with her and get to know her more. They were friends, but only in passing. Like pen pals. Pello found himself excited to travel with Etana and share the experience of snooping into the Land Walkers.
"You don't need Bane to come with us, you'll be safe with me! I know the reefs like the back of my hand.." Was his easy reply
"I guess we should probably go find your parents...make sure they're ok with this plan...but maybe we don't let them know just how close we want to get...right?"
He winked, "It'll be our little secret..."

Etana let out a laugh at Pello's suggestion. "Yeah, maybe they don't need to know everything..." she gave him an overdramatic wink and shrugged her shoulders.
She also didn't doubt for a second that she would be safe with Pello. He was older than her and bigger and knew way more than her about the ways of the world. And he had already met them. It sounded like she couldn't be any more safe, except for maybe with her own parents, but that didn't bother her.
Yeah, I guess it's time to go back." She agreed.
