Haniel was once again out wandering around in Homewood. This time he actually slipped away from his nanny as he was impatient to go out and explore. Boy would they be so mad when they find out but they’re usually resigned to it once they get over being mad. Haniel couldn’t bring himself to care if he made his nanny mad, he had things to do, nouls to meet and places to explore. Any new noul he passed by he’d say, “Hi there! I’m Haniel.” Sometimes he’d get a small conversation, sometimes he’d get brushed off. Those that already knew him would call out a, “Hi Haniel! On an adventure today?” or something of that sort. He’d reply while still on the move. He also got snacks this way too. He guessed that adult nouls just loved foals and he knew he was stinking cute or adorable.
Once out of the busiest part of Homewood, he headed in the direction of the Barrens. He knew he wasn’t allowed to leave Homewood, especially to go into the Barrens. But he just wanted a peak out and see it. His parents didn’t have time to take him to see the other places in Vykeli and his nanny always had more than just him to watch over. Oh well, he’ll peek real quick and head back. What could happen?WC: 226

Cinder was buzzing. Fresh from her Grandfather Tree vision, the doe felt almost invincible. The knowledge that she could now help and heal - both creatures and Vykeli - with her gift made her mind churn about all the possibilities, all the things she could see and good deeds she could do. In her mind's eye, she could see it all, scenes of her standing by injured nouls and desperate critters, her growing into her abilities, her rousing long-dead trees from their permanent slumber. The doe skipped along through the Barrens and back to the Homewood, eager to tell her parents how her quest had gone. They'd all expected her to achieve and to be granted a gift. Her parents had likely guessed which one she would get, even. But it would be a treat to tell them anyway. As she neared the edge of the Homewood, she saw a little white shape bobbing near the border of the Barrens, looking like an eager little thing. Without quite thinking about it, the doe made her way toward the little colt. In her head, she imagined that she would simply walk by him and ignore his antics - it was just a baby, after all, and Cinder was spectacularly unequipped to deal with babies. But reality did not seem keen on complying, and before she knew it, she had almost run smack into him. "Oh, uh. Hello," she said, uncertain of how to proceed. "Don't uh... Don't go out there on your own. It's not very nice out there."

His back end spun around quickly as an older noul suddenly appeared. He stared up at her and then tilted his head and grinned at her. She was quite lovely and warned him not to go out into the barrens. He fluttered his big foal lashes at her all innocent-like.
“Oh I wasn’t going to go out. I just wanted a peak. My parents and nanny are too busy to take me out there...or anywhere.” He shrugged his shoulders. “I’m Haniel. What’s your name pretty lady?” He then decided to try out a new expression that his father showed him. One that he used on Haniel’s mother. The smolder. So Haniel worked on making the expression at Cinder and then wiggled his eyebrows.
Haniel had actually been practicing it earlier that day but mostly into the reflective surface of a creek. His nanny interrupted his practice time for lunch so now he was hoping that he got it down. Though he wasn’t entirely sure what it was suppose to do to other nouls. After a moment, he simpled grinned up at the doe, a big cheeky smile. It was just too hard to hold that expression for long and he prefered his regular grin. WC: 205 Total: 431

"Oh, no, I wasn't trying to tell you what to do. Just advice, I guess," she said, suddenly remembering how much she has despised strict instructions as a child. She tried to backpedal on her words, and was so caught up with not pissing off this young colt that she almost didn't catch whatever he said next. "Wait, what?" she paused in time to see the little smolder on his tiny face. It took her a moment to figure out what he was doing, her face screwed into a small frown as her brain churned. And then, finally, "Ahhh," she managed to say with a weak laugh. "That's a really... good expression."The doe could tell she was floundering a little bit, and she hated that. No doubt this little cold would think she was off her rocker and a loser, and he'd lose interest in speaking with her immediately. Cinder could deal with the latter - she clearly was not good at speaking to young nouls - but the idea that she had come off as a bit of a buffoon gnawed at her. She wasn't about to go down like that. "I'm Cinder," she said, trying to recover from the verbal stumble. "I'm sorry to hear about your parents. They must be important nouls, to be so busy."

Haniel simply tilted his head, the reaction wasn’t quite what he was expecting. From watching his father, does seemed to giggle infectiously and titer away among them. His mother had said that father was quite the looker, handsome and he had quite the affect on the females. She smiled wryly at him then. Father had overheard and said he was quite lucky to have mother though. She was super smart and could light up an area, pun intended.
Haniel eyed the older doe before him, she seemed younger than his parents. But Haniel was still a baby himself so he guessed he had a long way to go before the ladies swooned, giggled or tittered about him. The doe, Cinder she said her name was, apologised for his parents. How odd. His head tilted the other way and he simply gave her a sly grin. “No need to apologise, Cinder, my folks are out making the world a better place. And someday, I will too. You just came from the barrens right? What’s it really like out there? What made you wanna go there in the first place?” he was full of questions but that was about normal for youngsters.WC: 200 Total: 631

There was a kind of confidence in this little foal that Cinder could appreciate. He reminded her of herself a bit, when she was his age. Precocious, and charming for his age. She suspected that he might grow up to be a nice, smooth talker, given half a chance. "That you will, Haniel," she said in ready agreement. He seemed terribly understanding of how busy his parents were, and that was one point on which young-Cinder certainly would not have conceded. She had been a demanding child, making herself a focal point of attention at every opportunity. That was probably why her parents had never thought to have more foals earlier. One Cinder was more than enough. "That's right, I just came from there," she added with a decisive nod. "It was... well, it was hot. And not very nice at all. Terribly dry, nothing really grows there. But I guess... that's the draw."She paused to think about her journey out to the Grandfather Tree. So much open wasteland and dead or dying plants. It seemed truly inhospitable, and if she hadn't known for a fact that noulicorns traveled out there routinely, she might have believed that it was a place that nobody should ever go. "It makes you want to go out there and heal it," she said finally. "Like it's asking you to help. I went to visit the Grandfather Tree. I've always wanted to help, and getting my Gift was the logical first step."

Haniel stood transfixed as he listened to the young doe recount what it’s like out in the barrens. It did sound terrible but why was he so interested in seeing something that was boring and dangerous? Oh… maybe because it was dangerous. As Cinder said it made one want to go out and heal it… then it started to make some sense. So that’s why nouls constantly went to a place so terrible. Did his parents go there? They never had much time to recount tales of their travels, which had always bummed Haniel out. But his nanny made sure to make up for any loss he suffered from busy parents. Maybe Fariha would take him out one day to see it. His ears perked up when Cinder mentioned that she was returning from the grandfather tree and from getting her gift.
“Oh! What gift did you get?!” he asked excitedly.WC: 151 Total: 782

Cinder was glad the colt seemed so interested as she spoke about the Grandfather Tree and the Barrens. That very curiosity, she hoped, would grow as he matured, and he would join the many noulicorns out working to restore Vykeli to its former glory. Every body, every gift helped, and if she could credit herself with convincing even one young noulicorn to go out and heal the land, she would feel as if she'd done something. "I got the gift of Vivify," she said happily. "I have the ability to Soothe away pains." The gift was terribly fitting for her. She'd met many Vivify users growing up and had seen herself reflected in almost every single one of them. The abilities of the gift were perhaps not quite as powerful as some of the others at the Apprentice level, but the abilities of Vivify Ascended were truly astonishing. Cinder knew how to play the long game. She was gunning for those abilities, no doubt. "It has a lot to do with helping others at this stage, which I like," she continued. "But it's the ones later on that really get interesting. I'm going to resurrect something someday." The young doe beamed. No question about it. "Do you have a particular Gift you wish to receive, Haniel?" she continued, curious.

“I’m not entirely sure what gift I would like. Maybe one that my parents have. Father is a solar and mother is a vivify. But who knows, maybe a new one will show up by the time I’m grown.”
He looked back the way Cinder had come, out there was the barrens and in it, the grandfather tree. It is what determined which gift a noul was granted… or not granted. He had asked nanny about the black horns. She seemed surprised he knew those words but told him a short version of what they were. He looked back up at Cinder, she seemed nice enough. He hadn’t run into an unkind noul before. Tilting his head he asked, “Have you ever met a black horn or even a bad noul?”WC: 131/913

Cinder was nodding along to Haniel's answer, so she seemed a little taken aback when the youngster asked a new question. "Black horns?" she echoed, blinking. "I... No, I don't believe I've ever met one."It would have been a tall order, she suspected, to meet a black horn in Homewood, especially as a child. Her parents had been keen to encourage her to embrace her natural ability to help heal Vykeli, and any interaction with black horns might have been a dent in their efforts. Few really knew how it worked, but there were certainly noulicorns out there who believed black horns were almost contagious in their ideology. Cinder herself didn't quite agree, but then... she wouldn't know. She felt a curiosity inside her come alive, sparked inadvertently by this young colt's question. "Fortunately for me, everyone I've met so far in Homewood hasn't been bad," she added, though that wasn't to say she hadn't met some selfish or disagreeable characters in her life. "But I think I might eventually run into some once I start traveling outside of Homewood. I don't know if I want to, but I think it's inevitable, somewhere out in the world."

He turned to face the edge of Homewood once more, his ears flicked forward. Just beyond Homewood was a much larger world of dangers, excitement and adventure. A place were black horns roam and nouls seek to heal, a place full of mysteries and strange beasts awaiting vivifys. He tilted his chin up a bit and back glanced at Cinder. There was a look about him that almost said old soul.
“When I’m old enough, I’ll go to the tree and get my gift. Then I’m going to go explore our world. I’ll find a black horn, I’ll make discoveries and I’ll see everything. I’ll grow, learn and become an ascended just like my parents. Maybe some day, we can meet again and go on an adventure?” he tilted his head, his youth reappearing before her eyes. “Adventure awaits.”WC: 139/1,052

He seemed like such a precocious youngster, Cinder was sure Haniel would handle himself with aplomb when he did his quest. The doe nodded with a smile, following his gaze toward the edge of Homewood, and then nodding back the way he had come. "Come, I'll walk with you back into the forest," she said, figuring it was high time for both of them to get back. "I would certainly not say no to an adventure when you're ready. It's definitely out there."No doubt, they would both enjoy it. /fin
