 Life was only ever about survival, making it one more day and then another. Life for Shappa went by like that for as long as she could remember. Her parents had become a vague and distant memory. She never knew what happened to them. All she knew was that the days past and they never reappeared. She never knew why and at first she wanted to but then it became about surviving and not dying. So she learned quick and early what it meant to live on Vykeli, alone.
Shappa taught herself the hard way how to scrap out a living in the harshest environment of Vykeli, the Barrens. She learned how to find water and food, when to hide and be cautious, who was dangerous and who wasn’t. Some of these lessons had carved themselves into her very flesh. But life made her stronger, faster, more cunning and tenacious. Eventually she discovered the ruins, a section that rarely a noul ever came to but as she delved farther in, she did come across nouls. At first she observed them and some performed interesting magic that made her curious.
As Shappa continued her travels deep into the ruins, she soon came upon Homewood and how so many nouls were there. Her past came spirling forward as she suddenly wondered if her parents had been here the whole time. She learned about the “magic” that nouls could be blessed with by a...tree? She learned the why, that it was for healing Vykeli and making it their own. Soon Shappa came to the conclusion that her parents left her to go and heal Vykeli, forgetting about her at all. That blindly following some stupid tree was all a noulicorn was born to do. This couldn’t be right. Shappa began questioning everything about the noulicorns drive to heal a planet that seemed to be doing it on it’s own, why they put their belief in a tree and why it seemed they followed it instead of doing what they wanted.
The noulicorns of Homewood would try to explain to Shappa at first, but she wasn’t having it. None of it made sense to her and she wanted nothing to do with it. She tried to reason with them and eventually they stopped trying and would walk away from her. Soon, nouls would give her wide berth as she would become aggressive with any who tried to confront her on her views. Then she got into a heated argument with an elder and hit them out of frustration. She was told that if she couldn’t respect the authority of Homewood and live peacefully among them, that she was to leave and not return.
So Shappa left Homewood, she didn’t care for the blind followers of a tree. In fact, she practically stormed into the Barrens to see this “special” tree for herself. As it came into view she thought how pretentious it was, growing on its own plateau that seemed untouched by the harshness of the Barrens. She was seething by the time she reached the base of the massive tree.
“What is so special about you that even my parents abandoned me to serve you?!” she shouted at the tree.WC: 538

A coldness snaps at the air despite the beating sun on the hot, desert plateau. The Grandfather Tree shudders like an angry snake as Shappa approaches.

ll Grandfather Tree ll
You meet an elder noulicorn while travelling the Barrens. They appear near death and cannot stand. They ask you for water. You know it’s almost a day’s journey to the nearest water source and you can’t be certain the elder will live that long.
What do you do?
Eventually, she settled on a direction and decided to travel at a light trot for ground coverage. Soon she came upon a low place that she decided to carefully pick her way through. Large juts of rock formations surrounded her, obscuring her view as she walked through it. She definitely had been here before. That meant that water was only about a day’s journey from her present location. She had no worries about making it there on her own to get water, maybe some food if she was lucky.
She realized too late that she had grown lax with her familiarity of the area. As she rounded a rock formation and about jumped out of her skin at the noul laying there. At first she thought they were dead and approached cautiously. It didn’t look like they had been killed by a predator, they didn’t look young either. Shappa tapped the body roughly with a hoof and backed up as it groaned. The noul lifted their head weakly and looked over at her.
“Wa--water...please,” the noul asked, it’s eyes pleading with her.
Shappa simply sneered at the elderly noul. Didn’t they know better when it came to the barrens? It’s every noul for themself out here, survival of the fittest. She didn’t have help from anyone else and she had been cast out from noul society. They turned their backs on her, why should she care enough to help. This one was almost dead anyway, she thought as she turned on her heels and continued away from the noul.
“Please! Water!” she could hear the noul call out to her in it’s weak and raspy thin voice.
She paused a moment and glanced back. The noul tried to get up but fell back to the ground and laid it’s head down. The barrens had dehydrated the noul, the lack of food had grown apparent, this noul didn’t seem to know what it was getting into way out here. She couldn’t even see any signs that it might have had necessities. It was all alone. The eyes had closed again, the breathing was so shallow she care scarcely tell. Death was coming for them, the barrens will claim another but it wouldn’t claim her. She turned back towards her destination and picked up her trot again as she weaved through the columns of stone. Thoughts of the elderly noul growing distant in the back of her mind.

The coldness dissipates. Everything dissipates, leaving a void of non-feeling around Shappa, a vacuum where Vykeli should be. There is a sudden spark of pain and then everything returns to normal.
Except, were Shappa to look, her once pale horn is now black.
Shappa has received no gift.
