It had been some time since Mielikki made that first trek across the barrens to the Grandfather Tree. She felt so young and inexperienced then, having to finish raising herself and working hard to prepare for that first journey. Mielikki had been living in her childhood home then, but now, she slinked out from Blackbriar Bog to begin her journey to Grandfather Tree once again.
She was different this time, she had matured, had strengthed her abilities for she now had three and she came, not with a familiar, but a growth of lichen down her chin. Mielikki definitely made sure to bring water with her. Neither her nor the lace lichen could handle too much dry heat without it. And it wasn’t just in her gift that she had grown, Mielikki had overcome her past and made friends. It was still a work in progress but she knew other nouls and this was big to her. The climb up to the plateau was the same but not as scary as when she first arrived. Cresting it, there was the Grandfather Tree in all its splendor. She’d been here just once before to receive two more abilities. They had benefited her new life on the boundary of the bog. Can you believe that she chose to live there now? Neither could she, but it was idea for fungal cultivation some how and she was really working on that. Suddenly she was before the massive oak tree and she tilted her head back to gaze up into its branches. Today was an auspicious day, today she was coming to the Grandfather Tree to move up in her skill level as a fungal noul.
“I am ready,” Mielikki said with full confidence.

As before, the world faded from view but instead of the bog, Homewood came into view. She breathed in deep of the air and gazed up at the canopy above her. It hadn’t been that long ago that she left Homewood for the questionable air of the bog. While it smelled bad and presented numerous dangers, the outskirts that came up to Homewood gave way to the opportunity of mushroom farming.
“Excuse me Miss, down here,” came a small voice.
Mielikki blinked and quickly looked down, there was a foal standing before her. In fact, there where several foals all around her. Oh, well that’s interesting. They all started back at her, some with head tilted in curiosity, but they all seemed to be waiting on her.
“Miss, are we going to begin class now?” the same foal asked.
“Class?” she blinked at the tiny noul.
“Yes…. You’re teaching us today.”
Mielikki stared dumbfounded at the foal for a moment and then looked to the others. They nodded in response and came in closer. So the tree wanted to see what kind of teacher she would be to the next generation then. This certainly was going to be quite the quest seeing as she had no real experience with foals or teaching. Wait, she had been teaching Specterdust about her gift of botanic. Fungal was still very new to the noulicorns, perhaps there was something she could teach them there.
“Ah, very well then...class…” she squeezed out her nervous windpipe. “I’m Mielikki, a fungal noul. We are relatively new to the list of gifts. Who can tell me what the other four are?”
“Me me me!!”
“Ok, you then…”
“Botanic, vivify, atmos, and s-solar,” the foal replied.
“Ah very good. I’m sure some of you learn about those from family and we can cover them more in depth. But let’s start with fungal today. Fungal users help break down dead matter, like bodies and plants, using mold. They can also add much needed nutrients to the soil for plants to grow. Another fun one that you’ll all be able to experience as adults, is fermented drinks. As adults. Fungal users also can grow and connect with all types of fungi or mushrooms.
Fungal users can work with others like botanics to help a grow plants bigger and stronger. A botanic will clean their plot of land and put down seeds or sprouts to grow. But the soil isn’t always the best and needs nutrients, plant food, added. Botanics tend to compost their weeds into a rich food source, but this takes time. Fungal users like myself can learn Enrich to add that right away, giving seeds and sprouts a chance while waiting on compost. Any questions?”
“What’s compost?” a foal in the back asked.
“Compost is when you pile up organic material like dead leaves and plants and turn it every so often. It eventually breaks down into nutrient dense soil that can be reworked back into the ground or just sprinkled over the top.”
“What is ferment?” a foal to the side asked.
“Ferment is similar to composting but for food that we wish to still eat but it turns it into a liquid that we drink instead. It makes us feel bubbly and weird instead but it fun. It’s reserved only for adults thought.”
Mielikki liked the questions the foals asked and that she seemed to not mind teaching the young ones. Despite not having a very social upbringing, she’d been working on that with each encounter she had. Miros, Russet Fawn and Talltale, Oleander, Specterdust, they’ve all helped her open up just a bit more. She never saw herself as someone who could teach another til she met Specterdust. Even though her mother taught her a lot, that was apart of parenthood. Healing Vykeli was important to all of noulicorn kind though, and these little ones needed guidance.
“Can we have lunch now, Miss Mielikki?” a foal asked as it nudged her shoulder.
Mielikki shook her head and gazed down at the small noul. “Of course.”
