User ImageIn the thick of Homewood's sheltering trees, the noonday sun provided pleasant basking in clearings, shafts of warm, golden light that pierced through the canopy. It was more a warm companion than a blistering overlord. This halcyon afternoon Fariha found herself assisting with watching a cadre of foals. The other nanny was a mother to two of the foals and was more following along at a leisurely pace behind. Fariha was in the thick of it. The current game was team tag, which had evolved from hide and seek, which had originally been some silly rhyming game that they had come up with on the fly. She found herself as the last one not tagged, so the five foals that were in their care were hot on her heels, a chorus of laughs and taunts of threatened tags. Fariha spun and splashed through a shallow stream to break into a clearing littered with flowers. In the center of the clearing, she made a show of apparently stumbling and ending up in a dramatic roll. Two of the foals dogpiled on her while the three others pranced around the pile in their victory. "We got you, we got you!"

The older nanny came over and called the foals by name for them to give the young pastel doe space to stand again. Really, she had been made breathless from the chase but also laughing from the fun of it. Fariha rose to her hooves finally, vigorously shaking the leaves and grasses that stuck out from her mane once righted. "Good game, everyone! Now, I think we've all earned a drink. Let's have a bit of a cool down." She sighed as the foals followed the older doe back toward the stream that they had splashed through. Closing her eyes as she took a few deep breaths to help slow her racing heart, an unexpected feeling struck her. She needed to leave or so the urging told her. She was needed, now, elsewhere. She opened her eyes and spun on the spot. "Huh..."

The other nanny approached the location where she was, stopping midway between the treeline and where Fariha stood. Upon seeing her distant expression, she angled her head. "I think it's about time we take the kiddos to catch a nap, since you've tuckered them out so well...Hey, you doing alright?"

"Think you can take care of the kids from here? I think-I think I need to leave. I feel like I'm being called to go to the Grandfather Tree. I feel it's time for me to go." She met the other doe's gaze and smiled apologetically, closing the distance to press her cheek against that of the other nanny. "Really, I'll be back before too long." She stepped back and grinned back to the curiously watching foals. "Wish me luck! Grandfather Tree calls me! You all be good and I'll let you know how it goes when I get back!"

The youngsters cheered, Fariha sent a friendly wink to the older doe, and turned to race towards the outskirts of Homewood. She paused to drink her fill before heading out, but then off she went! It was a long trip, but Fariha slowly made her way up the climb to where the great oak grew. At the top, the winds shifted and cooled the sweat that slicked her hide. She smiled. "Okay, you called, and I have come to answer. What am I to do?"

Though no breeze passes through, Grandfather Tree's leaves rustle as Fariha approaches.

Choose one of the following prompts for Fariha's dream vision.

Quote:
You are in Blackbriar Bog. Through the murky swamp water you spot something unusual sitting in the silt. The water is dangerous and you don’t know how deep it goes, but you’ve never seen this thing before.
What do you do?

Quote:
You meet an elder noulicorn while travelling the Barrens. They appear near death and cannot stand. They ask you for water. You know it’s almost a day’s journey to the nearest water source and you can’t be certain the elder will live that long.
What do you do?

Quote:
While travelling through Homewood you meet an unfamiliar foal. The foal acts strangely and doesn’t communicate well. It appears to be orphaned. On closer inspection you realize the foal is sick with some disease you don’t recognize. The disease might endanger the rest of Homewood, but this poor foal…

One moment she had been staring up at the vast pallid branches of Grandfather Tree, then in the span of a blink, Fariha was gazing up at the canopy of Homewood. It was a little disorientating, but a few moments of standing stock still with her eyes closed and breathing deeply helped ground her again. Once settled, the pastel doe circled the immediate area she found herself in. What was she meant to see, what was she to do? Night was falling and the shadows grew long and dark. A series of crashes through the underbrush made her pause, focusing her gaze and pricking her ears forward toward the source. "What in the world...?" She asked herself. It didn't sound terribly large. If it was a predator that made its way beyond the more guarded outskirts, it wasn't an especially stealthy one.

A plaintive wordless cry followed another short series of crashes, snapping twigs, crunching of leaves. Her heart ached at the sound. Her time helping to foal-sit left her with no doubt of the origin. There was a foal in distress, quite a young one from the sound of things. "Hang on, little one! I'm on my way!" She bounded over the ferns and undergrowth to find the youngster in need. The little nigh max overo blood bay buck appeared to have fallen through a bush and was sitting awkwardly on the ground, legs akimbo, looking unsteady.

"Oh, you poor dear," Fariha soothed as she drew closer. Weird, she didn't smell or see any other adults around. The tiny buck must have staggered a ways. Then, another thought hit her. He may have been orphaned, or, worse, abandoned. She gently preened the leaf litter and ground debris off of his coat and from his mane. Upon such close inspection she was stricken with an odd feeling. There was a shakiness to the foal. Even while sitting he couldn't seem to stop his head and legs from jittering. Touching her nose to him, she frowned. He was burning hotter than he should be. Fariha didn't like to look of this one bit. She had some basic first aid skills, but nothing she knew remotely seemed to fit the symptoms the little lad was exhibiting. What if it was contagious? She couldn't risk traipsing the poor thing from healer to healer until finding someone with an answer, potentially spreading this mystery ailment.

"You're not feeling too good, huh, buddy?" The foal gave another little cry, something more akin to babbled gibberish than words. He tried to stand and walk again, only to end up tripping over nothing, tumbling hooves over head to land in a sprawl, before lifting his shaking head and looking back to her. "Oh! No, no, sweetling. We can't go anywhere. Let me make you a bed. Stay right there, okay? I'm not leaving you." Hurriedly, Fariha made several trips to collect a good bit of fern fronds, making certain to give everything a good shake a ways from the boy to rid them of as much clinging spores or dirt as she could. In the crook of the nearest tree's roots, she made a nest of the ferns and some gathered bundles of long sweet grasses. "Let's get you to bed, huh? My mama always told me that sleep is one of the best things we can do to help us start feeling better." She nudged him gently to rise to his hooves then gently lead him to the makeshift nest. It was slow going, but she did her best to help give him support to lean on. The foal flopped into the nest, tucking his legs beneath him. He needed to cool down. His fever could be aggravating whatever else is going on. Her tail lashes as she stared into the dark, listening. There was a stream pretty near to their location.

She watched the little buck for a few moments. He had laid his head down and seemed to settle into the nest. If she was quick, she may be able to find something or someone to help. Gosh, she felt so unprepared for this, but she couldn't just do nothing! She sighed and turned, heading in the direction of the stream as quietly as she could manage. Fariha had an idea in mind of something to help. For whatever the reason, she was reminded of her own foalhood. How flinging soaked mosses at each other had been a delight on especially warm days. It cooled her down then, maybe it'd help the little fellow she'd come across. Scouring rocks in and along the stream for especially thick, dense clumps of moss, the doe made she they were drenched in the cooling water before picking her way back to the foal. Gingerly tucking a few clumps against his belly and a couple along his neck, Fariha sighed. She felt too anxious to rest. Unable to just sit still with her nervous energy, she softly paced near the tree where she could keep an eye on the resting youngster. Where had his parents gone? Were they dead? What was the matter with him? Was there anything more she could do? She had so many questions buzzing about in her head! Biting back a frustrated groan, she looked to the patches of starlight peeking through the canopy overhead. She closed her eyes which stung with the threat of impending tears and tried to steady her breathing. Her heart was breaking for the poor foal. She'd try her best for him. She was trying her best. Come morning, maybe even dawn, she resolved herself to go find help. Hopefully, for the time being, her efforts would be enough.
