Mielikki decided to spend the day wondering through Homewood. She normally didn’t want to place herself where there was a lot of nouls, but she now had an ability that she felt would benefit those in the botanic field. Plus, with the field of botanics growing, she wanted to see what was new out there. Maybe she’d run across something new to everyone as well. Though, since her mother was long gone and but a memory over her shoulder, she’d have to take anything she found to a botanic.

Everything in Homewood seemed to be flourishing beautifully. The trees where massive but also dropping seeds, viney plants scaled the trunks as they reached for the sky. Bushy ferns unfurled and small plants with dainty flowers sprung up everywhere. In the more damp spots and even dotting trees (living or dead) were mushrooms and other fungi. Mielikki would stop and take a look at these as they weren’t plant or animal but something else. Her mother never paid them much attention and so Mielikki never learned about them or even ate them. One thing was for sure, they were varied. She felt a connection with them despite not having any knowledge of them. She’d make sure to keep an eye out for them throughout Homewood while on her walkabout.

Not much farther down, she came across a noticeable garden plot. A botanic noul stood nearby and was looking rather worried over the plants he had cultivated in plot. Mielikki paused for a moment to take in the sight of the plants. They looked...stunted. Like they could manage to grow to a point and then stopped thriving. The noul finally noticed Mielikki’s presence and startled a bit.

“Oh, I didn’t see you there,” he said. “I was lost in thought.”

Mielikki raised her eyes to him. “I see your young plants are not thriving. Do you require assistance?”

The buck looked taken aback. “Are you a fellow botanic? If so I could use some help figuring out why they stopped growing so well.”

“I am not”

He looked disappointed. “Then how-”

“I am not a botanic, I’m a fungal noul. I can check your soil and see if my Enrich ability can help.” She said, not deterred by his disappointment.

His face changed, it brightened. “Oh thank goodness. I’m sorry, I keep forgetting that we now have fungal users. Please...please check. Anything to get these herbs growing again.”

Mielikki nodded and carefully stepped out into his carefully laid out garden. She lowed her head, pressing her nose to the loamy soil. Hmmm, she tasted the soil, rolling it around over her taste buds before spitting it out again. She thought over what she could or couldn’t taste and check for what could be missing. She started to stir her magic to life, bringing it forward to help. Then there it was, the missing key nutrient.

“I have found the problem,” she said plainly. “Please step back and give me a moment of quiet.”

The noul did as she requested. She lowered her head back to the soil and grabbed onto her magic, pulling it through her body and sending it straight into the ground below her. She brought forth the nutrient that was missing from this garden and focused it out and around her. It just barely reached the full plot before she pulled back. She rose her head slowly and moved away from the garden.

“It is done,” she panted lightly. “I hope that they will now bounce back.”

The botanic noul thanked her profusely as she ambled away from him and his home. She was tired now, but thrilled. She did it, she used her gift again and in a plot bigger than before. It took a bit out of her but she still did it. Mielikki then went in search of a cool drink to help revive herself before she continued her patrol of Homewood. And it was once she had her drink, thanks to the kindness of another unknown noul, she happened to stumble across a wide leaf plant that she didn’t recall.

“Well hello there,” she muttered. “Who are you?”

Mielikki inspected the plant, looked over its leaves, sampled it’s choice soil, investigated who it chose to be near and then gently bit a clipping off.

“I think I’ll take this beauty to a certain botanic I know. Maybe she knows what you are.”

Mielikki tucked the clipping into her bucket, which she had now put on a sling around her, and trotted off to find a botanic doe she knew.
