Having just made it to the Ruins of Erli several days ago, Roamer had devised a clever method to get Ysalone acquainted to the area. He wanted her to inhabit this world with a measure of comfort and confidence, both of which she currently lacked. The buck couldn't blame her - it was her first real trip outside of the Homewood, and although they had made shorter excursions before, this one would be a true test of how the young doe would handle herself. They would be here for a while. The buck wanted desperately to do some thorough investigation and a bit of healing. Still, to get them both situated, Roamer had devised a bit of a game for them to play around the Ruins, which Ysalone had agreed to without a second thought. "Let's keep it simple to start," he said. "Nice easy run, from this structure to that one over there." He nodded toward a thing of indiscernible shape a ways off. "Keep it at a trot, nothing faster, we'll see who gets there first." Ysalone was dancing about on the spot, tail swishing, tossing her head in excitement. She'd been a bit apprehensive on their journey to the Ruins and had spent a good deal of time questioning whether she'd done something terribly stupid by foisting herself upon Roamer. There had been no real need for her to ever leave the Homewood, after all, and... maybe she would've been better off taking up a role there like she'd always expected. But it was too late for doubts. And Roamer, for all his grumpiness, had proven to have a real eye for others' emotions. He'd picked up her discomfort early on and had done everything he could to make her feel more at ease. This game, especially, was helping her forget about her insecurities. "A nice trot, eh?" She said eagerly, even though she didn't perhaps have the most ground-covering gait. That was alright. Roamer barely had to stretch his legs and extend his trot to outpace Ysalone to the finish line. He came to a stop in the shadow of a windowy building and turned around to watch her with a small shake of his head. Was she even taking this seriously? With her, it was always hard to tell. She was prone to fits of focus followed by stretches of distraction that didn't usually help when he tried to explain things to her. Some days, Roamer had to wonder if she was willfully tuning him out, or if it was just the way her mind worked. When she finally made it to him, he rolled his eyes. "You didn't even try," he said bluntly. The doe beamed at him. "This time, at least pretend you care?" He pointed to a thick metal beam that lay on the ground, fallen from wherever it had originally been installed. "First one to move that a noticeable amount wins." Ysalone couldn't help but laugh at his obvious displeasure. But he had at least the decency to sound imploring when he asked her to try, so her nodded her head firmly. "I solemnly promise I will try my hardest," she said, biting back a laugh because - as they both knew by now - Ysalone hardly ever did anything solemnly. It probably wasn't within the bounds of her nature to be anything of the sort. Still, she put her head down and strained against the metal beam. It was heavy, and it had sat unmoved for so long that the ground beneath it had compressed a bit. Enough to leave a noticeable outline. It was quite a hefty thing, and no match for her slender frame, so it came as no surprise to either of them when Roamer finally managed to make the thing budge. The buck wasn't a particularly burly noul either, but he still had some weight on her. Ysalone conceded her defeat with all the grace of a lady - that is, by lifting her head with a harumph and kicking the metal beam. Roamer released the beam with a puff and raised his head to give Ysalone an appreciative look. "That was close enough, wasn't it?" He said, sounding almost a bit proud of her. If she hadn't known better, she might have thought that he was slipping. "But you're still losing." The buck grinned, quite unable to help feeling a twinge of competitiveness. He had a particular desire to hold the lead now that he was out in front, and he was willing to do whatever it took to preserve it. "How about a little dash then? From this beam here back to the building." He had barely finished the words when Ysalone bolted, leaping clear over the beam in a mad scramble for the building. "Hey! You little cheat!" Roamer barked. Jumping the gun - how could she! Without thinking twice, he began to summon a cloud over her head, unleashing a light drizzle right above her eyes. That would show her! The doe emitting an audible squeal as the drizzle fell onto her face, more from surprise than anything else. "And that isn't cheating?!" She spluttered, coming almost to a dead stop to shake the water from her eyes. In the moments it took her to regain her composure, Roamer dashed past and reach the building, looking awfully proud of himself. She trotted the rest of the way out of spite, frowning mightily at him when she drew up beside him. "And what else have you got planned for us, cheater?" She said, eyes narrowed, glaring at him with shards coming out of her eyes. The doe stamped a foot disapprovingly. What a life of wandering had done to this heathen! "I'd consider that a... creative maneuver," Roamer said with a chuckle, knowing that Ysalone wasn't actually angry. She'd brush it off the moment they started their next challenge. Still, he had at least the decency to feel sheepish about starting a drizzle right about her head. Poor girl didn't deserve to be scared. "Next one's a little more up your alley, how's that?" he offered in an attempt to make up for what he had done. He looked over at the underbelly of the building, which head eroded enough to reveal pillars holding the structure up. "Pillar weaving? Quickest one through wins." He trotted toward it and maneuvered in between a set of pillars, bending his body to the left to get around the next. Then to the right. He wasn't particularly bendy and the move certainly was not his favorite, but he gritted his teeth and did his best anyway. Roamer's suggestion perked her right up. Just as he had expected, all her mock displeasure vanished when she saw what they were doing - weaving about, and under a cool building nonetheless! The very idea sounded terribly wonderful to her and she almost bolted forward prematurely again to try it out. She watched the buck do it, looking creaky and stiff the whole way through, and she let out a good-natured laugh once he was done. "Aw, Roamer, you didn't need to pick something fun just for me!" Not that she was complaining. There was a level of appreciation reflected in her words that made the buck smile along as well. Then it was Ysalone's turn. She ducked into the dark underbelly of the building, letting out a low whistle as the sun seemed to disappear behind the concrete structure. "A little light would do us all some good," she said quietly, drawing some light into her horn so that it would glow. The whole area took on a pleasant, golden hue and she wove her way in and out of the pillars with stunning ease and grace. "Probably the one thing we've done today that I'm definitely better at," she said, grinning. That one little victory was good enough for her.
