The morning had started out as any other for Dousan. He had gotten up, stretched, went about one of his usual ways to get a drink from some nearby river or brook, and had then set himself to getting breakfast. He happened upon a small, sun dappled clearing that was peppered with other noulicorn similarly filling their bellies. It was perfect. He had spent a little time chatting with a couple noul who had stopped to greet him before he had excused himself to actually eat. The crisp, sweet grass was hitting the spot and the buck had been letting his mind ponder what was needing to be done for the day.
At least until a soft, quite youthful voice started hollering his name. His velvetine ears swiveled toward the source first, noting the rapidly approaching swish of one rushing through the somewhat long grass. Lifting his head with a concerned tilt, Dousan's blue violet eyes settled on a still very gangly yearling hustling his way.
"You're Dousan." The tone was a muddled blend of question and a statement of fact.
"Yes. That I am. What seems to be the matter?" The young buck was clearly worked up over something.
"I heard you help out noulicorn who need you from my cousin." A slightly older noul who hung back aways from the youngster in front of him had been watching but seemed to suddenly take to intensely scratching an itch on their jaw when he looked their way. Dousan looked back to the yearling. "Well, I need your help! My sister left to go visit the Grandfather Tree this early morning. She had promised me she'd wear our good luck charm, but she must have forgotten it, or - or she couldn't find it before she left! Please, please, could you get this to her? I know she'll get her gift if she has it."
The presumed cousin sheepishly drew closer, apologizing and trying to draw the younger buck away. Dousan offered the pair an easy smile and shook his head. "No need to apologize. In fact, I had just been thinking on what to do with my day when you started calling me. You simply brought an answer for my own question to myself. I can see this really means a lot to you, so I'll be happy to make sure your sister gets your lucky charm. All I'd need from you is your sister's name, a little on what she looks like, and, of course, the bit of luck you'd like for me to take to her."
After assuring the cousin that everything was indeed fine, that he didn't mind, and receiving the sister's name and general description, where she headed out from, the young buck produced the siblingly good luck charm. It was a small round stone, cool blue grey in color with thin white striations running through it, worn smooth from the rushing of water. There was a hole in the middle, through which a cord was threaded through to be worn as a necklace or perhaps to be wrapped about a leg or maybe a horn. It was an endearing little trinket. "Now, don't you worry. Your sister will get this before she reaches the Grandfather Tree. I must make haste to catch her, so I must bid you both farewell." He nodded to the two before turning away to start his trek to bring the little luck to a doe seeking her gift from the Grandfather Tree.
He paused before leaving Homewood proper. Hmm. Perhaps he should bring a little something to help the hopeful on her way. The trinket from her brother would likely be all she'd need, but the Barrens were very unforgiving for even prepared adult noulicorns. A couple of brief stops later, Dousan had a small container of water slung about his neck and he now officially on his way. He'd put the word out with a few folk around that he'd be out of Homewood today and that he'd likely return by mid-morning tomorrow.
His own journey to Grandfather Tree had taken him across the Barrens, though his calling came in the night; the heat had been blisteringly brutal like it is during the day. Such had been his drive that time and distance seemed to blur for him. Maybe it’d be similar for the aspirant doe he was needing to find. Still a swig of water and the little charm would likely be a welcome sight for her. The Barrens stretched out before him and Dousan knew he had to hurry. So, without mind to the ever rising sun, he took off at a sprint into the Barrens.
