Somehow Duncan and Sadie, the Neptune Squire that he had just met and saved out from a mystery puddle, had managed to make it back to his apartment to dry her off and wait the cold out for a bit. He had immediately given her some clothes to change into, a shirt and whatnot that his sister had left over at the apartment, and threw their wet clothes into the dryer on low heat. It would take a while, but they had some time. It was only after that that Duncan had been able to offer her a hot drink and a couch or chair to sit on with a blanket if need be and a heater if she wanted it. He started to make some water for tea since it was so late, but he had a coffee maker too. He walked back into the living room, giving a sigh of satisfaction since they were no longer in the freezing rain. "Sorry about all that. I hope those clothes are okay since I'm not sure if you and my sis are the same size. But I put your clothes in the dryer. Anything else you want in the meantime while we wait?"

When Sadie had been led up to the apartment, she'd been a soaked and shivering mess, and not really feeling up for more small talk, not really at all. Being in a heated building helped some, and the dry clothes helped more. By the time the once-Page returned from the kitchen, she was curled up in a seat, her long arms hugging her knees close. Her hair was out of its braid to dry, and she felt at least human if not quite warm. She rocked forwards slightly, eyes brightening further at the sight of him. "They're just fine," she said with a gentle smile. She was a tall, lanky thing, and any borrowed clothes had a tendency to be either too short or too loose on her, but any clothes at all were lovely compared to her rain-soaked sweater. "You're being sweet as sweet, letting me come to your home like this," she said. He was a kind one, she decided. "So, I have another name," she said. "Well, we all do, I guess, but mine is Sadie. Sarandon, if you're feeling formal, but," she thought back to the first moment she'd seen the Neptune symbols on his clothes to when he'd pulled her from the water moments later and brought her here, "I think we might be past that already."

He gave a shrug with a small smile. "It's the least I could do. I mean, I know we only just met, but I couldn't just leave you like that. My day job is life-guarding so helping others is just something that comes naturally to me." He sat down, wondering if he should still get them some drinks. "Sadie, it fits you. But yeah, I think we are past formalities at this point." He replied laughing a bit. "I'm Duncan. Usually just go by Duncan but I have a few nicknames if you really want to use them.
Would you like anything to drink? I can make coffee, tea, hot chocolate, whatever. Though I can't guarantee it will be fancy or anything." He had tried making some of the hot chocolate suggestions that he had found on the packages. He never could quite get how the ice cream with sea salt caramel was supposed to work. "And it's no problem. I may not look like it, but I like having people over from time to time. Maybe we can meet here again sometime." Well, he didn't have people come over to often, life-guarding and being near the water was his life, so his friends tended to do the same as he, which meant being away from their homes quite a bit to be near the water themselves.

Sadie pulled her hair back over her shoulder now that it was past the sopping-wet stage and started combing through it with her fingers. "Duncan sounds a little formal," she said, wrapping a curl around her pinky. "Not in a bad way. It makes you sound like a king." The old stories had been much more interesting to her since she'd found all of this magic, and she remembered a good king called Duncan showing up in one of them. "It's lucky you're a lifeguard. Well, maybe even more than lucky." Sadie wasn't sure just how much magic the planets had, or if it was enough to grow into something people might call destiny, but it was a nice thought that Neptune had sent her a proper lifeguard to help her out. She was shaken enough as it was, but if she'd had to try to crawl out of that awful chasm on her own and then find her way back home alone, it would have been so much worse. Even though she was warming up now, she shivered. "It's fitting, too, for being of Neptune, I mean. I just do design work and some other bits and bobs. I like gardening, and there's a garden on my wonder. That's the closest it gets to wrapping up neatly for me." She curled up even tighter, and when she blinked, her eyes felt a little heavy. "I'll take a tea if you have anything decaf," she said softly. "And please don't worry about your house, it's lovely." Her own apartment was a bit of a explosion of laundry and takeout boxes at the moment. Even if she was the type to judge, she wouldn't be in a place to.

He blushed at the compliment. "Thank you." Really, a king. That's the first time he had heard such a thing. The comment about being a Neptune Knight fitting him had him blushing again. "I think it's fate too." He couldn't help but chuckle. "You know, before all of this, I really woudln't have believed there was such a thing as "fate" really. I mean, I know people say they were "fated" to be together and whatnot, but to actually be tied to somewhere else you don't even know about, and learn that you belong there instead of where you are already, it sounds so fantastical. Like some fairy-tale or something."He was glad that he was a Neptune Knight and not another one. He was sure that on others they also had places with water, but he wasn't sure he would have been able to stand it if he was someplace like a desert or forest where bodies of water large enough to swim in would be hard to find. He would probably stay on Earth the rest of his life without ever visiting his Wonder. He nodded as she asked for decaffeinated tea. He had some green decaf tea that he could give her and shook his head with a smile with her comment on his house. "Thanks. It's not amazing compared to everything else, but it's nice to have a place one can come back to and call it "theirs" even if they're renting it or they own it." He replied as he went off to make the tea. It took a couple of minutes, but eventually he came back into the room with a coffee mug on a plate with a tea bag with string included sticking out of the mug.

Talking about kingship had Sadie wondering just how many people had been rulers, back when the solar system had been broken up into all those kingdoms. Had any of the knights been kings or queens? The word knight implied a certain amount of servitude, but she wasn't sure just what it had meant back in the ancient days. "The more I learn, the more I see it reflecting fairy tales and folklore," she said. "Um, knight magic is passed down through bloodlines, sometimes. Other people are connected to the past, somehow. For a long time, I thought they could just see old memories, but it seems like they might actually be reborn souls. All of us are connected to these deeply magical places." She trailed off as he went off into the kitchen, happy to let her thoughts wander for a few minutes to the nicer parts of the strange and violent time she'd found herself in. When he returned, she accepted the tea with a smile and a deep nod, but she didn't drink it just yet. It was nice to curl her hands around the mug and to just feel the warmth for awhile. "Neptune's absolutely lovely, by the way," she said, and there was a faraway softness in her eyes for a moment before her gaze snapped back to him, suddenly much more alert. "Or did you already know? Have you seen it? I'm sorry, I guess I never got a chance to ask how long you've been at this, what you've done."

"That's... interesting." He hadn't known about it, that some people could be descendants. He hadn't yet had any memories from before, so he figured that he might be one too. Especially considering his mini guitar had been passed down through the family. He took a long drink of his tea, feeling the warmth seep into his bones, finally glad that he was getting warm on the inside and not just trying to from the outside. "I have, just a bit of my Wonder though. And it was an... well an experience at least." He would have to get used to the waterfall slide that led into it at least. "My uh, Wonder appears to be mostly underwater. Not sure what it's used for yet since I've only been there once and getting to it was not quite what I expected." He had wondered if the Knights of his Wonder were able to breathe underwater or if they had some apparatus to do so. "Lots of waterfalls for some reason, maybe as a transportation hub? I'm not sure. I'd love to see what yours looks like though." He added at the end, almost rambling and trying to get as quickly away from his Wonder as possible. Was he scared to go again? He wasn't sure at this point.

"Underwater? Wait, really?" The cozy, sleepy haze was gone just like that. Sadie leaned forwards, away from her warm spot in the couch. Her eyes were very open now and nearly sparkling with attention. "Well, it's an ocean planet, so I shouldn't be so surprised, but my wonder's gone dry as dry over the centuries. I can see places where there used to be waterfalls, but now it's just riverbeds and a little bit of algae. You can see for yourself, though. I'd love to take you as soon as you're ready!" As if to curb her enthusiasm, another shiver ran down her shoulders, and she stopped talking to take another sip of tea and to feel the warmth settle in her belly. "Maybe not tonight," she said softly. There was another brief moment of contented silence before she said, "Sorry, I could talk about space for hours. It's what I know the best out of all of this magic life. The fighting and all of that still seems like a lot, sometimes, but if you have any questions or anything," she tilted her head, leaving the statement open-ended.

The enthusiasm that Sadie had when he mentioned his Wonder surprised him a bit, and he almost spilled the tea that he was holding, having tried to get a sip in after he had talked for a bit. There was splashing, but luckily the water stayed in the mug. "Well, we're kind of like opposites then. I'd love to see yours. Mine is kind of... intimidating." Intimidating wasn't exactly the right word, but he wasn't sure how to condense 'appears to be flooding on the inside and only some places are managing to hold the water back but if something isn't done most likely it will sink into the ocean that is the planet and can never be found again'. When he had been able to explore, the groans that the walls were making made him jump every time. As though they would just burst and he would drown in the water. Hers, while drier, sounded like a much more pleasant place. He chuckled. "Definitely not. I would be wondering if perhaps you hadn't quite collected yourself from that incident yet. But someday sounds good. If it has some beaches, I could imagine going there and getting some sun, or at least relaxing." He certainly wasn't going to be able to do that at his Wonder! "Thanks. I think I may have more when I visit your Wonder, but already meeting another Neptune Knight has relieved a lot of my worries. I mean, I have met others, but to find one of your own, you just feel a bit closer you know?" Like... he belonged to something. And he wasn't quite sure what that something was yet, but it was more than just his lifeguard buddies at least. "For right now though, I guess I'd like to know more about all of this. Why are we fighting? I mean, I know "why" but in a more specific way."

"Well, if you'd feel safer going up to your wonder with someone else, I'll always be up for it," she said with an intensity that wasn't often there. When she said always, she meant it. In general, she'd schedule times to go to space with people, but for Neptune? For Neptune, she'd roll out of bed at two in the morning if that was what it took. She'd reschedule work. "My wonder is lovely as anything, but it's not quite like Earth's beaches." The sunlight was all filtered through the water. It was a surprise that her sun-loving plants were surviving, with how out on the fringes of the solar system her planet was, and how deep in the ocean, besides. The magic coming back to her wonder had to be a strong and life-giving one. "And my ancestor is, as you put it, a little intimidating, but a section of the irrigation is working, and I've got a garden starting to grow." The complexities of space fascinated her. There was so much potential up there. The complexities of what was going on in the city mostly just gave her a twisted feeling in her stomach. When Duncan mentioned the fighting, she straightened slowly and took a sip of tea that was slower still. Then, she answered with a question of her own. "Everyone has their own reasons and their own philosophies," she said. "You say you know why. What have you been told already? What have you seen?"

Duncan was surprised by the offer, but was happy about it. "Yes!" He knew he sounded a bit too enthusiastic in that reply. "I mean, yes, that would be great. Though I have to warn you there appears to be quite a bit of danger. I'm trying to find out some of their secrets, mostly how to move up waterfalls because the entrance and exit, if you don't count the surrounding ocean, are just waterfalls and they had to have gotten out of there somehow." He just had to find it. He wasn't sure what it was and hadn't seen too much of his Wonder to tell what exactly the point of it was. "There's nothing quite like the beach..." He remembered how much he missed those right now. "I would love to see it. Mine seems to be an underwater trap, but yours sounds just wonderful. I'm sure mine had it's uses though." He said with a chuckle. It was a scary place, but he wouldn't be kept away from it. "You found your ancestor? I didn't find anyone at mine. Then again, I think I would have passed out from fright if I found anyone else there. I keep expecting it to be some other-world Bioshock or something."As she was talking and after she finished her question, Duncan took a moment to drink from his own mug and contemplate the question. "Well, I know we're fighting the Negaverse and there are people on that side who are trying to take our starseeds. And then I was awakened when I was being attacked by one of those Youma things.." What else had happened? "I've learned about some of the other types of knights out there... and that we have Senshi as our allies. I've met... one. And I think that's about it." He said, trying to remember all that he had learned and seen so far. But he hadn't thought about it too much. "I bet you know a lot more about it than me of course."

Sadie didn't seek out danger, these days, but she didn't avoid it, either. In a city crawling with monsters, it was hard to stay truly safe. The thought of a little rough water up on Neptune was nothing compared to that. "It sounds exciting," she said, her fingernails still tapping tapping tapping on her mug, faster and faster. "My wonder's beautiful, yes, but it's also a little desolate and tragic. It would be lovely to see another part of the planet." The tapping continued as Duncan talked about his experience with the Negaverse, but the soft smile faded and Sadie's lips pressed into a thin line. It didn't sound like he'd seen too much of the war, but even being attacked once or twice was scary and sad. "The Negaverse's power source is something called Chaos," she said. "I like the Star Wars metaphor for some parts of the war, but Chaos is not quite the Dark Side. It's not connected to our power source, to the Code, in any way, and often people don't choose to follow it. They're coerced, or tricked, or forced. It's like a disease." With effort, she set down her mug and switched to brushing out her hair with her fingers. "Like cordyceps, maybe? The one that can take over an ant's mind?" She squinted at the wall for a few long seconds. "Not quite that, either. They can be reasoned with, still. They can be purified. They're not quite puppets." She said it like she was trying to convince herself. Even the worst ones off, the generals and the half youma, still had some will and a little soul in their eyes, which was a good thing. There was hope for them. There was always hope, but it was true they were truly broken people, truly sick as sick. "It twists them, like you said. They'll take starseeds. They'll maim people, unprovoked. I'm not-" she swallowed, "Not the only one." Her hair was free of tangles, now, and she started braiding it again. "That's why some people think fighting back is the answer." She glanced up at him. "Well, most people I've met, but not me."

"Next time I go I'll give you a heads up. Or we can get together sometime to do it. I would just... make sure you have everything in order here if you do go." It was too much like Bioshock. Without everything trying to kill him, but the atmosphere reminded him of it. With less steampunk and more "sunken Atlantis" as the theme. He listened to her explanation of the Negaverse, Chaos, and what she had seen within it. He had only met... one? Agent so far, and he had been quite powerful. "That... makes sense. If they're doing it against their will though, does that mean that they can have the Chaos removed? And if so how would that be done?" He was interested in hearing the answer. He wasn't quite sure if he would have the same approach as she. After all, there were truly evil people out there, even without the help of Chaos, but if there were others who were truly doing it against their will or were brainwashed, then they had to help them first, though defend themselves if needed. He got a feeling that her eye may have been lost because of that thinking. An unfortunate sacrifice, but one couldn't predict the future. Nor could they predict someone who wasn't in their right mind what they may be thinking either. He smiled and took another sip of his tea. "I don't believe what you're doing is wrong. And I know I'm only a Page and you have been at this a lot longer than I have but..." He looked at her, a more serious look on his face, usually reserved for those who decided to bring out the lifeguard in him. "I hope you are as cautious as can be. I don't think we should give up on them either, but I don't believe that we should let our guard down either."He blushed and looked away at the wall. "Sorry. Just, whenever I think about people hurting themselves it brings something out in me." He turned his head back towards her and sighed. "I guess that's why I've been a lifeguard for so long, but I can't help it at this point." He grimaced for a bit, before going back to a more neutral expression, the feeling having gone away. "Truly though, if you want to try to reason with them, I'll be there with you if you need the backup." He still had no idea how to fight though. It was something he would either have to "learn on the job" or need to find training.

Sadie nodded, grateful for the easy question. "Any royal senshi or knight should have the magic to remove the Chaos from someone who unwillingly fell to it," she said. "I know one named Camelot who I could get you in touch with, if you needed. I also met someone who had been through the process. It seemed to work. He looked the same as any other knight." Well, he’d been missing an eye, which had stood out to her even back then, and he’d had strange stories, but his clothes were white enough. There was something in Duncan’s voice, then, that made her twist the end of her braid faster and faster. She wasn’t so blind to not notice the way he glanced at her scars while he made small excuses. Then he spat it out that she should be careful and not hurt herself. For the first time since plummeting into that unexpected ice bath, Sadie froze. Her fingers no longer tapped or fluttered. She stayed there, staring into nothing for a full two seconds. Then, she turned so that her bad side was facing all the way towards the wall and she wasn’t really looking at Duncan, not at all. “I’ve made my mistakes,” she said in a voice that was not just soft but also small. “I’ve learned from them.” This was the part that made her stomach go into knots. The first thing people saw about her was that she was a casualty, a victim. She knew Duncan hadn’t meant it like that. She knew he was trying to be kind. Still, she kept looking towards the wall. “It’s dangerous here regardless of your philosophy,” she said. “That’s something you should know. I’ve talked to people who go out every night bent on bloodshed and people looking for some kind of middle ground. All of them have their own scars.” Most weren’t as painfully obvious as hers, but they were there. Finally, she glanced back towards him. “But if you want to make a difference, sometimes you have to have your “things in order”, as you put it, and go out anyway,” she said. "I'm not actually always looking for the Negaverse. I have some other vague ideas that I think would be best to figure out with a network."

You couldn't help yourself for one night could you? Duncan thought to himself as he cursed that he had made the situation awkward. He could tell that she was self-conscious of what had happened to her, but he just couldn't get that protector mentality out of his head for even one night, and saying it to someone who was more powerful and more experienced than he! "I'm sorry. And I... would appreciate being able to meet either of them." He said in response to her telling him that there was at least one who could do the purification. He took one last sip of his drink and hesitated in getting another. Instead he sat back in his chair and thought for a bit. "Yes... I wouldn't expect to come out of this unscathed. And of course there's always the possibility of death, especially with the people and Youma was it? That we have to face off against." Maybe he would die to one of those instead of something else from being out in the sun all day before he was 40 years old. "I would be surprised if any of us came out unscathed. Whether it's physically, mentally, or both. It's not an easy decision to participate in all of this, especially when we're thrown into it without any guidance." He didn't say this to her as though it were her fault, but he had felt some twinge of annoyance when thinking about how he had become a Page. His mini guitar was no longer just something to play, he had to have it with him if he wanted to power up now. And if that Senshi hadn't saved him, then he would have died to the Youma that had attacked him. He had no knowledge of fighting. He could swim well, he could help those who were panicking in the water, but this would involve skills he never thought he would even have to learn. "I don't think you would be very successful if you were always looking for the Negaverse." The few other times that he had been powered and out and about, he had only felt one so far. Against the General. Not something he wanted to experience again anytime soon, not without unlocking his magic at least. "If you're willing... I would like to hear your ideas sometime. It doesn't have to be tonight, but I'd be willing to be a part of that network. I think we would do better with groups rather than by ourselves all the time." It was nerve-wracking to say the least. The fact that they were so scattered, and if he hadn't been with that Super Senshi going up against the General, then he would have been dead meat. The fact that there didn't seem to be many groups was... concerning to say the least. As a lifeguard, he wasn't ever by himself. He had to rely on his fellow lifeguards to make the beach a safe place for everyone.
