It was the kind of night that made bed seem like the least appealing option.

The moon shone bright in the sky. The wedding-favor rings on her finger still made Sadie smile every time she saw them, that little reminder that there was still good magic in the world. Even the weather wasn't so bad. Well, not for frigid January, and she could wrap up in her skirt a little bit against the cold.

Sitting in the park would have been nice enough, but she thought it might be better to send out an invitation to a friend than it would be to see who showed up to meet her, with only hopes and wishes that it wasn't a broken agent.

She made her way over to her craft able and grabbed some scrap paper. When she could, she liked writing up letters worthy of a Knight of Neptune, but today's message was a bit more practical, so her only flair today was using some teal ink. It took a little longer to think of who to write to, but in the end she decided to send it to one of the few people who had her true contact information.

Quote:
Kami,

Hi there! It's Pendour. How are you? I was wondering if you wanted to meet up again. I can bring hot chocolate.

There were probably some other snacks around she could offer as well. She spent a few moments looking at her cabinet, head tilted, before stamping her signet ring on her note and sending it off on its way.

The message had been unexpected. Kami had decided he was going to relax for a bit before he started studying again, but the message wasn't unwelcome. He just hadn't expected a message from someone he knew from Order to come to him that wasn't about sparring or meeting up to go to their Homeworld or Wonder. To get it from someone he had met before and was in more contact with... it was a nice feeling to say the least.

How it had popped up was interesting too. He knew that knights didn't have phones, so it must have come through her ring... somehow? He thought that was how it worked.

Either way, he sent a message back to her:

Quote:
Pendour,
Hey! Thanks for the message. I'm fine, though a bit stressed with studying. How are you? And I would like to meet up again! It would be a nice break from all of this studying : ) Hot chocolate sounds great! Just tell me where and when and I should be able to make it!

It would be... nice. Even if he wasn't off visiting some far-off place, meeting up with someone whom he could call a friend that wasn't his girlfriend, it brightened his day. It didn't seem like he was so... alone in all of this fighting. Still, he looked over at the stack of books and papers, he would have to study a bit more before he met up with Pendour to make up for the lost study time. It would be worth it though, but really, he thought undergraduate school would be a lot easier!

Pendour was thrilled to get a reply back so quickly, although the mention of studying brought a bit of a sympathetic frown to her lips. She was glad that she was through with all that. It had been a different sort of stress from the war, but almost as intense in some ways.

She didn't mind encouraging a little bit of procrastination.

Thinking back to when they'd met before, he hadn't struck her as particularly young, which made her think about college. Well, that was her best guess and she was going to go with it. She sent back the address of a park that was near the university, one that by the map seemed small enough that with hope, it would not be a place where the broken ones found their victims.

Then, it was time to prepare, which meant getting the hot chocolate. She ended up with the biggest, creamiest ones she could find, which she carried in reusable mugs that were covered in swirling snowflakes. It was the best cure she could think of for study stress. She also had a little pack of chips and some candies tucked away just in case.

She ended up in the park, curled up on a bench while powered up. If the aura wasn't enough, the smell of chocolate wafted off the drinks to fill the surrounding area.

Luckily Kami was able to get to a good stopping point in his studies. At least he would be able to remember what he had been doing next time he went to them and went off towards the park near the university, glad that it wasn't too far away, even if he was powered and could got there quickly even without a car.

Soon enough he found her aura and was delighted at the sight of the mugs that she had in her hand. He knew one was for him and hot chocolate sounded delicious right now, especially since he could smell it from quite a few feet away.

He jogged up to her and waved when she spotted him. He wasn't sure why he had come so quickly, but he was pretty sure it was the drink bribe. That and meeting with someone again, even if it was a Squire, on the Order side made him feel like they were actually connected and not just random people who decided to fight sometimes.

"Pendour, it's nice to see you again." He wasn't sure what she wanted, and in the back of his mind wondered if something was up, but decided to keep it to himself. Even if he didn't know her that well, he was pretty sure she would tell him if there was something going on. "Glad to have the excuse to stop studying for a bit. I thought pre-med might be a bit easier but I was wrong on that part..." At least he knew how to study correctly and got the material in his head. He knew of many others who didn't even know how to take notes.

The aura of a senshi in the distance brought a smile to Pendour's lips. Seeing him was enough to get her to uncurl a little bit, enough to shift both steaming mugs to one hand so she could wave him over.

"Hi, Kami," she said, and she peeled herself from the bench so that she could walk over and offer him his chocolate. "Here's your little treat, as promised. School can just be awful as awful sometimes, can't it?" Her degree had been more intense than a lot of people realized, with lots of all-nighters spent in various art and design studios, but she knew pre-med had one of the worst reputations as far as difficulty was concerned. "It sounds nice to me on the outside, getting to learn all about how to help people."

She settled back into her little seat, where she took a slow and savoring sip of her own hot chocolate. Her eyes fluttered closed and she gave a satisfied little sigh. It was really good, as warm and comforting as a bubble bath.

When she looked back to him, there was a soft and satisfied smile on her lips. "Well, you don't have to worry about that right now. I was wondering about your wonder, actually." She paused. "Your, um, planet?" She gave up on the guessing. "Did you ever end up going to your world?"

Kami grinned and thanked Pendour as she gave him the hot chocolate. He really wished he could have downed it all in one go, but knew he needed to savor it. It wouldn't be that helpful in warming him up if he just had it all at once! He nodded in reply though. "Yeah. I'm only undergrad pre-medicine but it's already intense." He could practically feel his back hunched over as he had to study so much.

He was about to ask how she had been when she asked about his Homeworld. He nodded, though slowly. "I've been there a couple of times now... it's still kind of nerve-wracking to go though. Apparently it's like a traveling surgical-center for space, so I mean, just imagine a horror-story themed hospital where everyone disappeared. It looks all clean and in order and stuff, but I keep waiting for something to jump out and attack me." He shuddered at the though. Nothing had happened yet though. There were no weird experiments in jars or pods or anything. Just some computer tech that he could power on but couldn't read, patient files, tools, cleaned experimental benches and tools. It was as though after everything had been cleaned and put away the inhabitants just... disappeared. Like they were snapped by Thanos or something.

"It's interesting in a way, and I could see myself using it if I do become a surgeon and any Knights or Senshi may need it, but otherwise I'm not sure what to do with it. I'm sure I could find some other Senshi who could use it too, and any Knights in the medical field, but it's not a hospital, so it's not equipped for long-term stay." It was nice to have it, but what was he going to do with it? Maybe use it for a quiet study place at least. Then he wouldn't have to deal with other apartment tenants or dorm-mates being too loud while he was trying to study at least.

Pendour listened, her fingers tapping ever so gently across her mug. A smile came to her face, all the way through to her eyes. "It sounds lovely," she said. "Silent and strange, maybe, but that's kind of how it goes with dead worlds. If it's any consolation, I don't think that senshi have to worry about ghosts." Ghosts as in ancestors was what she really meant. She wondered what it would be like to see the faces of old friends only to know that they were long dead. That would be its own burden, but it was the kind of burden that she might trade Irving for.

"If it's pristine, then it's like a blank canvas, ready to be whatever you want it to be. It doesn't have to be tied to the past. It's whatever is useful to you, now." She raised an eyebrow and her voice went a little bit teasing. "I could help you cover every inch of it it plants," she said. He didn't quite seem the gardening type, but if he did go that route, she would be happy as happy to help.

"But if you did want to keep it a surgical center, there would be use for that." She would know. "The night this happened-" She took a long sip of her hot chocolate the way some people took long sips of whiskey, and then she wiped her hand and reached up to pop out her prosthetic eye. It was easier to show than to say the words, sometimes. "Even once I got to the hospital, there were so many questions I couldn't answer, and when I told them as much of the truth as I could, they didn't understand. Going under the knife in that kind of environment made the worst night of my life that much harder."

She looked at him straight on for a moment, hoping and hoping that as a med student he didn't mind the empty socket. Then she put the eye back in and gave a more solemn nod. "It'd be heavy work, but you could make it that much easier, instead."

Kami couldn't help but smile. Someone saying that his comet sounded, well, better than he thought it did, it made him feel a bit proud of it. Still, he liked Pendour's Wonder better. But perhaps he could spend some time on his Homeworld and spruce it up a bit. "Actually, some plants might work well. At least on the outside surface. Not sure about the inside, but I'm sure we could get some lights to work and maybe start a little greenhouse or something." He would have to find out how his Homeworld had been powered before. Solar? Some sort of atom splitting?

Kami was more surprised at her popping her prosthetic eye out than the empty socket and the "eye" that was looking in a different direction. He just hadn't expected it. But still, he could stomach it. He would have to anyway if he was to be a surgeon. "I can only imagine... but it means that it truly would be useful as a surgical center. At least we wouldn't have to hide how we got our injuries." He frowned a bit at the thought. He hadn't considered that the Surgi-center would have been needed if he was honest. Sure, he wanted to revive it a bit, but didn't think that it would actually be useful. He took another sip, removing the frown from his face. "It would be. Of course, that won't be for a long time. I hope that eventually I can make it a reality."

It was weird what he was feeling, a sense of purpose? He had been trying to find that out when he was just a Basic Senshi, unsure of what he could really do, and had taken a break from the powered life because of it. But going to his Homeworld, and then talking to Pendour, his friend, about it... it made him realize just how much he was needed and how much the Senshi and Knights should be interacting more. If they could build each other up like this, then they could possibly win this! He started to laugh a bit and afterwards apologized to Pendour. "Sorry just... I'm happy. For quite a while when I was just a Basic Senshi, I often wondered if there was any point to me being one. Meeting you and hearing that I could actually be useful, not with my powers but with my Homeworld which I was so afraid to visit for so long, I can't express how thankful I am."

There had been a time when Pendour would have gotten all cold and logical about the role of medics in war. She still didn't like the idea of patching someone up just to send them back to the front lines, but she also knew it wasn't that simple, especially as Chaos and the Negaverse seemed so bent on carnage and destruction that curing what could be cured seemed like one way to take a stand against everything that they stood for.

Also, if she did end up hurt again, she didn't really want to be left bleeding on the ground.

"Well, hopefully not all injuries will require attention that's so intense or delicate," she said. "Some will, if things continue in the course they're going, and the more you learn, the better, but if you could stitch up wounds and maybe get some antibiotics, that would be enough to help a lot of people."

As his excitement grew, her smile started to creep back. "It's like anything else, like life. Having theses powers and these worlds has the purpose that we give to them." She glanced up towards the sky. "For me, space has just been an endless source of inspiration for me since I've discovered it. If I can help it inspire you, somehow, I'm always glad to help."

She paused, tilting her head. "Although I don't know if can be much help as far as medical training. That's probably in the homework you've left behind. Although I was wondering, if you're still stressed," she summoned her ocarina with a jangle of pearls, "Can I try my magic on you?"

"True, I should at least learn the basics first. Some basic first aid would still be a lot more helpful than nothing." It would take a while for him to become a surgeon after all, and once he did that, he would also have to gather a team that could come with him to his asteroid, or even to his operating room on Earth. It would take long, hopefully not too long, but still long enough that it made him nervous. It did mean though that he couldn't waste any time when it came to trying to make his "team". He could relax at points, sure, but he would have to keep this new goal in mind.

He looked up at the sky with her. "Well, you do have such an amazing Wonder. If I were able, I would probably never leave my Homeworld that much if I could actually create a life on it. But I know that's just not possible. Besides I have a life here on Earth too." He said, chuckling and taking another sip of his hot chocolate.

He nodded. "You think you can help? I'm always stressed at this point." He eye the ocarina. "Ooh, now I get to see what your magic does." He said, raising an eyebrow and smirking. He didn't mean anything mean by it, but he was curious.

She nodded as he talked about learning first aid and thought that maybe it was something that she could work on, too. She had no interest in being a doctor, not really, especially with how hospitals made her jumpy, now, but having some bandages on hand was still probably a good idea.

"I do spend a lot of time up there," she said with a wistful smile. It was especially nice in this time of year to have somewhere nice where she could grow things, and the routine of going every two weeks gave her something to look forward to. "It's lovely, of course, but it does get a bit lonely. I don't think I could have a full life there." There was Irving, yes, but he was getting better about giving her space, and she wasn't exactly about to seek him out during her garden time. "I'm trying to spend a little bit more time as a knight here on Earth."

It was what had led her to reach out to Kami in the first place, and it was why she had offered her magic. She wanted to share what gifts she could. "It's supposed to be a relaxing effect," she said. "I haven't gotten to try it on anyone who's, um, alive, though." It hadn't been quite clear if the effects had even worked on Irving when he'd taught her. She smiled over at her friend, glad someone seemed excited to be her test subject.

Then, she lifted her ocarina to her lips and started to play a tune that was soft and sweet as sweet.

SSBrosB
When Pendour plays her ocarina, the negative emotions of those within five feet of her fade and are replaced with a feeling of pleasant relaxation. One can shake the effect with enough concentration, but it can serve as a distraction for those who would do Pendour harm. She can channel this magic for 45 seconds.

Kami nodded. After all, even if he were to become an Eternal, or she become a Knight, he wondered if they would ever, if at all, be able to bring their places up to functionality. As much as he wanted to fix up his Homeworld now, he wondered if he would have to wait until he was 80 years old to see results, especially since he would have a busy job as a surgeon. Perhaps he could become a specialist, but spend more of his time on the Powered side? Maybe he could ask others for help?

He wasn't sure if even that would work though. First he would need to find the power supply on his Homeworld, then fix it up which would include metal working and all sorts of other things and...

The thought of it just made him stressed. Perhaps by visiting it more it would start to repair itself a bit? He thought he had heard another saying that, but couldn't remember at this point. "That's... understandable. I don't know if I ever could either. Even if we visit as often as possible, would we ever be able to fix it up during our lifetime? Or would it take 2 or 3 more reincarnations?" He shuddered at the thought. He really did not want to think about that right now.

"Well, I'm glad I can be your first test subject then." He responded laughing a little. He hoped it worked though.

When he heard her melody, he found himself caught up in it, and by the time it was over, he felt... relaxed! Or at least his brain didn't seem to be racing. It seemed quite a bit more focused and positive, as though what he was worrying about were worrying, but they could be put to the side for right now. He smiled at her. "Wow, that's really something! I might have to hire you to do that to me more often!" He said, blushing a little at the wording, but meaning what he had said. He would be willing to pay money for this sort of easy relaxation!

Pendour thought to her own wonder, to the high, broken arches that she had no idea how to reach even if she did become a knight. The whole thing was covered in art that had once been priceless, but a lot of the mosaics and sculptures from the less protected areas had crumbled nearly to dust. It would take becoming a master artisan a few times over to fix them, or else more than her family's entire bank account to try to replace them.

"No," she said after a few seconds. "I don't think I can, and it would probably be harder than that for you, with a whole world to fix up. Only seeking completion is a goal that's not going to be very satisfying. Even Earth is a work in progress, an almost everyone dies without having truly finished their projects."

Then she thought about her little garden. "It's about the journey, like they say. It can be really satisfying, doing little projects, and big ones, too. I've met a few Transcendents who have managed some really lovely stuff."

After the magic, she sent her ocarina off and turned back to her hot chocolate, which was unfortunately running rather low. She smiled over at Kami, any awkward wording on his part going neatly over her head. "It worked? Oh, good." It was nice to know for sure, and of course it made her happy to see her friend look a little less stressed. She playfully raised an eyebrow. "Of course. You can pay in snacks. I like fruit and chocolate."

Kami couldn't help but feel a little defeated at her words, even if she was just saying what he thought out loud. Still, he knew he had to do something. "I think... that if I could just get one room to work, that would be enough for me. It doesn't have to be the whole meteor, but if I could just have one working room so that, if needed, I can actually help those who need it, then that would be enough. For the most serious cases, they could go there then rather than a regular hospital." Of course if there were multiple people who needed help, that would be harder, but if one room was open, that would be better than nothing.

He grinned. "Sounds good. I know a place to get all sorts of fruit and chocolate." It was one of those little cafes he had found when he was patrolling, but every time he stopped by, he always had to grab at least on of their sweet pastries or chocolates.

He noticed that his drink was getting low too. Sad, he wished it would have lasted longer, especially since it was so good. "Well, thank you for doing that, really. And it was nice to meet up again after so long. Well, not incredibly long, but you know what I mean." It was just... nice to talk to someone else who was going through all of this. Sure, his girlfriend was also someone he could talk to, but they hadn't been talking as much as he would have liked. So it was good that he could talk to another about his powered troubles.

Pendour smiled. "One room and plenty of helping people?" she asked, and then nodded deep. "Yes. That I have every faith you can do."

Of course she believed in him with the way that he seemed so determined, with about how he was already prepared to work for as many lifetimes as it took. She only hoped that he got his results quickly, the way he wanted. That would be a little harder. She'd do what she could to support him in the meantime, even if it was just a little of her magic. It was nice as nice to know someone who saw the same promise in space as she did.

She took the last precious sip of her hot chocolate and stood up. "Yes, this was lovely, wasn't it? I'll let you get back to your work, but maybe after a little while we can meet up again."

Especially since it seemed there would be snacks.
