Quote:
The night is cool but not unbearably cold; somewhere, in the distance, a faint tune carries on the breeze. Whether you choose to follow it or not is up to you but the tune is vaguely familiar. Maybe you can place it, maybe you can’t, but it resonates with you and you find yourself full of emotion. If you choose to follow the music you wind up in an isolated lake in the park. It’s frozen over, but you see a figure skating across the ice, playing a violin. They will skate and play for as long as you watch, but at some point--between one blink and the next--they disappear, like a shadow on the wind. The tune echoes but fades quickly, leaving behind only a strange emptiness. The figure never communicates and never leaves the lake; they never stop playing but if anyone gets too close they simply disappear. The music seems to play on any night it snows in the park.

“If I’d seen it sooner…” Shaking his head his pale eyes turned downward towards the cat in his arms. “I couldn’t have done anything though...I couldn’t tell him. I just wish I could have tried earlier - tried harder.” With Christmas around the corner, a week away, it hurt every time he came home from work. The house was devoid of so much life, even with Hudson living in his home, the loss of Aiden and Riley was impossible to ignore.

“I just hope he’s happy...or that he will be - he deserves it.” For all the trouble he’d brought the other, the heartache, Aiden had put up with a lot from him...more than anyone else ever would. He’d been blessed without even knowing just how blessed till now.

Snow boot covered feet took the ashen blond through the park, over the snow and deeper into the park, with Katya snuggled into his arms the twenty something year old was out for a late night walk.It was dangerous, he knew it, this time of year was never safe. But he figured if anything happened he could handle it, and he might just be looking for a bit of danger tonight. He needed something to break him out of his own feels...something to get him back on his feet, and a little violence might help.

"That's why I didn't say anything. If you knew then you'd try and fight it...and fail. It would have been worse." Or at least she figured it would have been worse, if he'd fought to keep the relationship only to fail horribly. "I wish he'd been an officer as well." She spoke up from her place nuzzled into his chest, her little face pressed into the fake fur lining the neck and hood of his coat.

"He will be happy - in time. As will you." It would just take time, it always took time. It was a matter of how long though, and she figured it might be a good while, but at least he wasn't mopping about the house. He was out here doing something...sort of. She knew he was looking to potentially get into a fight, despite being civilian at the moment, she knew if he spotted something he'd move to a hiding spot and power up.

Pausing for a moment, ears swiveling and tilting, the russian blue lifted a paw and pointed it in front of them and to the left. "That way - I hear music...some string instrument." She spoke, wanting to know what it was she was hearing and why. Why would anyone be out here, in the park, playing music while it was starting to snow? Settling her paw,. and leg, back under herself for warmth she was content to let herself be carried by the blond. When she got home she'd curl up with a book by the fireplace and read, out in the open, something she hadn't been able to do in a long while.

Life goes on, or so they say.

It had been about a month now since he and Alex had broken up and while he wanted to believe he was better off for it, Aiden still felt miserable. They had been together for almost six years now. One more and, despite not being actually married, they would have fallen under either common law marriage or committed intimate relationship. Not that he would have ever pushed for such a title knowing Alexandre’s thoughts on the topic.

“Things will get better,” he leaned over and pat Riley’s head. The Chesapeake Bay Retriever looked up, his tail wagged slightly but Aiden knew it was because he was still adjusting to it being just the two of them. He was an active dog use to running around a large house with multiple stairs and rooms to explore with a friend that was half his size. Now, he was confined to a small townhouse, bottom floor so his claws didn’t wake the neighbors when he trod upon the hardwood floors.

Riley’s ears perked suddenly, his attention snapping to the east where the sound of a violin could be heard through the snow-covered trees. Unlike the shopping malls that played Christmas carols, he didn’t recognize the melody being played.

His dog tugged at the leash, overly interested in who, or what, was playing the song and rather than fighting with him, Aiden let himself be reluctantly dragged between the hedges through the snow to a lake he never knew was even there.

Headed in the direction Katya had motioned he nodded his head. "Music..." He whispered, hoping to keep his voice low so he might hear this music as well. He wasn't surprised when he heard it, finally, he knew she wouldn't lie to him or make something up. If Katya said she'd heard something than she had heard something. "Interesting...we're rather deep into the park...someone out here playing music." It sounded almost like a trap, and he wasn't against walking into it either.

Pressing his lips to the dark gray fur of Katya's head the ashen blond smiled gently. "Is it wrong to hope it's trouble up ahead." He whispered, just so she could hear him. "I A good distraction would be nice." Something to focus him and hold his attention, even if only for a little while, he needed to get back to the Negaverse...since he'd lost the only thing which he kept to just his civilian life. He needed to lose himself to his duties as a General and forget certain things.

"I should start working on things - important things." Things to end this war. Then he could be happy, when it was over and they'd won.

"We'll work on something - together. Just wait until the holidays pass. Whatever magic happens now might ruin anything we plan. Once the holidays are passed we will work on things." Wanting to distract him, to help him get over things, she knew the blond had toyed with the idea of asking Aiden to marry him more than once. She was surprised it hadn't happened by now, she'd known Alexandre had thought of it at the flower unveiling a few years back. That had gone poorly and since then Katya had expected it at any time. It hadn't happened...and now this. She knew her owner wasn't sleeping well, miserably in fact, and was doing his best to cover up how tired he was.

If she could help him on some project she could help him regain himself and get over things, even if it was slow going. She knew it would take time...those two had been together for a long time. Eventually she hoped he would find someone, he needed it, he was one that Katya thought could get lost to the darkness is not held back just a bit. He needed to be a fighter and a killer, it was part of the job, but if he got lost...she worried. He wouldn't turn into some monster...just an unfeeling shell who only knew how to fight and kill. Alexandre needed people in his life. He was an emotional person and it was why he was such a good General, in her opinion. He cared about those who served with him.

"Keep going, we're almost there." To whatever was producing the music.

Aiden stood along the shore of the frozen lake, Riley at his side obediently sitting beside him. Snow had been accumilating throughout the day and he knew that it wouldn’t be wise to let his dog be out in it too long, at least not without perhaps a dog blanket or little booties. He was an active dog that thrived outdoors however, he was not a husky or St. Bernard and was not built for these temperatures.

So entranced by the figure skater gliding over the smooth ice, Aiden hadn’t realized that someone else had joined them as if they too were drawn here by the enchanting melody.

Something about the song resonated within him. It was sad, the long notes mournful of something precious now lost; or perhaps someone.

Alex…

Perhaps he had been wrong, leaving the way he did. Not even giving Alexandre the chance to explain, to offer a solution to the problem or to change how they communicated. Guilt gnawed at him remembering the look on his boyfriend’s face when he came home.

Ex… He mentally corrected himself.

Over six years spent together, it made living alone harder than he thought it would be. Even with Riley there with him, it wasn’t the same. The apartment was quiet and smelled of laundry detergent because he hadn’t been in the mood, or had the energy, to cook.

For only a fraction of a moment, he looked down at his furry companion; a gift once given from Alex. And to think that he almost had to leave him behind, but the apartment owner had called back with a change of mind; granted he had to add on not only a pet deposit but a pet rent as well. When he glanced up again the girl was gone and music had suddenly stopped playing, but that was not what caused him to pause.

His eyes saddened as he took a step backward. “Let's go,” he spoke quietly to Riley before Alex could notice them across the hidden lake.

When he finally caught sight of the skater words left him, anything he'd been about to say to Katya died on his lips. He'd never found females attractive, and still didn't, but he could admit when something was beautiful and worthy of being captures in some immortal manner. Painting or picture would be amazing and yet he didn't think it could possibly show just how enchanting the violin playing skater was.

"Not human...." He whispered. There was no way that person was human, they couldn't be. There was something magical about it and it wasn't just the music or their ice dancing. There was something else to it which had him so sure of it. The music was so sad and yet so beautiful - tragic. He didn't want it to stop and yet when he glanced away she was gone and the music had stopped.

He hadn't expected it to be over almost as soon as it had started, or as soon as he'd arrived on the scene, but it was over and he was left wanting more. Feeling teary eyed Alexandre blinked a few times as he turned his head. He wasn't expecting to catch sight of a familiar dog, and thus owner, walking away. Aiden....

Wanting to call out, to chase after, he refrained from doing so but only just. "Come on Katya...I think I want to go home." He knew he wanted to go home, he was done with this, not that he wanted to go back to a nearly empty house but he didn't want to remain out here. He could find some comfort in his warm bedding, if given enough time.
