After a very memorable birthday, Toby had, of course, asked when Izzy’s was. “Just wondering,” of course. He’d spent a while trying to figure out a good plan. It was a Monday, of course, so showing up first thing in the morning and doing something cool all day was out of the question, unfortunately. But that would be too obvious. No, Izzy needed a different approach. A more devious one. ...Toby was possibly the least devious person imaginable. But that was okay. He slipped a little “happy birthday!” Card into Izzy’s locker, complete with little poorly drawn happy faces, but he mostly treated it like any normal day. That is, until after school. He knew (from devious plotting) that Izzy’s mom had insisted he had to work that day...so he waved goodbye, waited a few minutes, then hurried off to the DeLunas’ cafe. He went right up to the counter, grinning as goofily as he tended to, and said, “I’ve got a reservation!” After a short bit, he was brought to a table...and sat in a spot that was conveniently hard to see until “whoever” served him was right there. Izzy, of course, was told someone wanted to make some Macrame. When Izzy did turn up, Toby was grinning excitedly, hands thumping lightly on the table.

A few weeks before his birthday, Izzy had already been told he wasn't getting anything. It was obvious why. After all, it was only just this year that he managed to be released from Hillsworth, and even still, he knew he was on thin ice. He'd have to earn back the privilege of having a normal childhood after having been so bad! Atleast he had one good thing going for him, and that was Toby. Toby was nice and kinda irritatingly optimistic and bubbly, but hey, Izzy liked it. And something told him that Toby rather liked his company too, what with all the blushing and embarrassing things. Obviously he was just too cool to be with the likes of anyone, and Toby was just feeling privileged being by his side. Obviously. And what could he say, he was getting used to having the blonde around, and even offered a big ol' grin when he saw the birthday card in his locker. It wasn't too long ago that they were hanging out and enjoying Toby's birthday... Shame they couldn't enjoy his together too. Worked called, unfortunately, and right after school, he headed straight to work. Only to be called to work with the very boy he was just thinking about. "Huh? What are you doing here? Don't you have club or something?" Izzy gave Toby a suspicious squint; he was far too excited to be sitting around at a grimy ol' cafe. (Okay, that was a lie, the place was spotless! He should know, he cleaned it himself!) "Why didn't you tell me you were coming, I would have gotten you a better table or something."

Toby’s light table thumping ended as Izzy spotted him, and he thumped both hands down at once and leaned forward. “Good! You’re here!” he declared, grinning. “I’ve got a secret mission for you,” he said, in his best conspiratorial tone (although it wasn’t really whispered, and ultimately at least some of Izzy’s family knew about it). “But first, we gotta get out of here.” He looked around, as if to check for people spying on them. “Helping me with my project here is perfect cover—nobody will notice you’re gone—just need to find a way out without being seen. He was pretty sure Izzy would love this sort of plan, even if ultimately he was much too nice to do anything really bad. But hopefully he wouldn’t say no to “secretly” skipping out on work.

“Ooh, a mission?” That immediately caught Izzy’s attention, and he shot a quick glance over his shoulder before scooting in real close. “so... We need to escape here...” “So.... Okay, gotta escape... Okay, yeah, sure... But does this involve the made outfit? Should I go change, or are you feeling the maid outfit today? Does it help with the mission?”

"Nah, it doesn't," Toby replied, shaking his head. He did like it, but didn't want to make Izzy wear that around today. "I've got some regular clothes in my bag," he said, nudging said bag lightly. "You can change after we get out...or right here, I guess, if you thought you could do it without being noticed." He looked around. "So, what do you think? Out the front door? A window? The side somewhere?"

"You want me to strip right here in the middle of the cafe? Toby, please, I'm not that adventurous. But I mean, if you want me to, how could I say no?" As much as Izzy loved such nefarious plans and secrets, it was impossible to let that one slide. It was too easy! He set himself up for it! But he only would tease so much, since they did have an escape plan to do. "Okay, we can go out the side door right there. It's at just the right angle so my mom won't see me run out. That work for you?"

While the suggestion did make Toby blush again, he had sort of expected that response, given what he’d said, so he was prepared. “Oh, could you?” He replied with a grin. “Gosh, I didn’t think this was that kind of cafe!” He shook his head, even as he laughed a little. “But, nah, better to duck out the side door.” He carefully stood up, and grabbed his bag. “Out that door, right?” He gestured to it...then ducked out. With a possibly knowing grin in the direction of the counter and Izzy’s family. Once he’s out there, he turns and waits, figuring it’d only be a few seconds.

"The cafe can be whatever you want it to be, Tobes, but my mom might have something to say about that." Not quite the reaction he wanted, but hey, it was good enough. Izzy looked at the front too, then slipped off his apron, laying it on the back of the chair, then bolted to the side door. When it closed behind him successfully, he grinned nice and wide. First mission accomplished! "Okay, so what's next? Where to I go change?"

“You can change when we get there,” Toby replied, setting off at a light walk. “Time for your briefing, though.” He gestured vaguely as he spoke. “You see, your diabolical plotting skills are needed to help decipher a fiendish plot.” He was, perhaps, stressing certain words too much, but it was fun all the same. “Anyway, here’s where we think everything started,” he said dramatically, and gestured to...an antiques store that was really only a few storefronts down from the DeLuna cafe. “They’ll let you change in their bathroom, then we can get into it...”

"Mkay." Izzy stayed close to Toby as they hurried along, clinging to every word about this so-called 'very important mission' he was on. How could he not grin stupidly at all of this? It was a dream come true! Maybe Toby was actually a secret agent like Nix was... Maybe he was powered and they had to go fight some baddies? ... Nah, Toby was way too nice for that sorta thing. He didn't expect their first stop to be the old Antique shop... He loved it. Nothing said mystery louder than either a dead body, or the smell of brass that's been around for AGES. "Okay! I'll go get changed! Gonna come with me? Can't let you be discovered by some random person peeking out a window, right?"

"Of course I'll come along," Toby replied with a grin. "Somebody's gotta supervise, after all!" As they went in, it seemed like the old lady running the antique store was expecting them, and let Izzy go change. While he did that, Toby quietly consulted with her briefly. Once Izzy was done, he said, "Okay! So. There's been a break-in here, but they didn't steal anything, you see...but things are ever so slightly out of place. We think there's clues about who the culprit is...and where they went from here." He'd been working on a sort of... escape-room-esque mystery for his friend, and hoped it worked out well. It seemed like the store owners nearby liked Izzy, or at least his family, quite a bit, given how amenable they were to it. It wasn't really disruptive, anyway. "Questions?"

"Supervise? Supervise me changing? You're getting rather bold there, Mr. Yates." When they went in, Izzy waved at the old lady, and right before he headed to change, he stuck his tongue out at Toby. "Don't scandalize the old lady!" After darting back, changing, then popping back out, he gave a little peek out the front window of the shop, then scurried back off to Toby's side. "Hm... Yes. I do have a question. How come you're not a suspect since you know all about it?"

"Me?" Toby replied, putting a hand to his chest, looking appropriately surprised and innocent. "Why, there's no reason to suspect someone as, uh, me-like as me!" He laughed. "Besides, I was, er, called to help!"

"Dude, did you know you suck at lying? Cuz you are totally lying right now. I can smell the lies on you. Smells like chicken tenders." Izzy emphasised this by pushing his nose right into Toby's neck and taking a nice, deep whiff. He lied about the chicken tenders. The boy only really smelled like soap. He did pull away before he was instinctively 'whapped', and only grinned. "So, clues.... Clues... Well, okay, so what was out of place so far? And was there any damage from the break in, or were they super sneaky and lock picked it all?"

Toby let out a bit of a nervous giggle at the sniffing and the chicken tenders. He had no idea what to make of that, although he did appreciate the closeness. All the same, he was happy to have Izzy move on. "No sign of break-in, just some fancy lock picking," he supplied. The antique shop was somewhat cluttered, as one might expect from an antique shop, but there was, overall, a very clear organization to it all. Just, as it stood, a few items here and there were clearly out of order. "There's a teddy bear collection that used to be all together on that shelf over there," he gestured, "But now they're scattered around. There's probably other stuff, too."
