For the last several hours, Lavendulan had been spending time cleaning her room. It wasn’t that it was really messy as opposed to just having a thin layer of dust over most things due to her chosen craft. With the holidays quickly approaching, and a surplus amount of time on her hands, she had been working on several river rock carving projects.

There were several failed projects in a pile that needed to be taken back outside or for her to do something with; two broke on accident while one had been ruined when a drunken officer stumbled down the barrack hallway and slammed their shoulder against her door. It was startling and because she was working on one of the finer details when Laven jumped, the Dremel tool carved a deep jagged line across the surface.

She really needed to find a better suited place to work on these things.

In the meantime, Laven diligently worked on removing books from her shelf and dusting them off, getting her pile of laundry and bedsheets taken care of. The rug was taken outside and beaten over a rail, a cloud of dust bloomed when she whacked the opposite side. Before bringing it inside she made sure the floor was swept before putting things back where they belonged.

Thinking back on it, they probably should have picked a time for Tinaksite to show up rather than just playing it by ear. But Laven knew that the Captian had a life outside the Negaverse or the Dark Kingdom, one Laven honestly felt a little envious of, which meant that more than likely Kat either had work or school to attend to and so she probably wouldn’t be showing up until sometime around dinner if she were to guess.

Kat had no real sense of time, or rather, she wasn’t sure of when was a proper time to meet up with your friend for dinner, and so at ten twenty three am, she had begun to just stare listlessly at the clock, wishing that the minutes would begin to go by just a little bit faster. Even the task of going shopping took only sixty seven minutes from the time she left the apartment to the time she arrived back to it, and for a moment, Kat was ready to just cook right then and there.

After all, there were no rules about the fact that you couldn’t have dinner before noon…it was kind of a dumb unwritten policy that lunch had to come first anyway…but maybe she could take a nap.

Naps were always a wonderful way to spend the time, and there was always that funny way that things sped up while you were sleeping so…if she took a nap, by the time she woke up it would be late enough for dinner.

What a perfect idea.

Or it would have been a perfect idea if the nap worked at all well. Since it didn’t, it turned into a forty eight minute time of Kat staring blankly up at her ceiling, willing sleep to come at all. Finally she got up and started working on cooking. At least that was something that she could get done ahead of time…and just have done with all of it.

Sandwiches seemed like a very safe way to go, and the idea of roasting her own chicken for the sandwich had been on of sheer brilliance, or at least that was how she looked at it. And of course, as the apartment filled with the smell of garlic and herbs as the chicken cooked…she had to admit that it had been a good idea. And when the final product was cut into thin strips, Kat almost danced across the kitchen floor.
Yes, this was a wonderful idea, and as she began getting things together for the sandwiches, the lettuce, tomato and the different cheeses, she felt excitement growing. Sure it might not be…super classy but…it was going to be a delicious dinner. And the soup that was simmering on the stove didn’t smell bad either…this was going to be fun!

It took a little while to get everything packed up, but it was a quick trip for Kat to leave the house and power up when she was a few blocks away, finally teleporting into Negaspace and heading to the barracks, hesitating for a moment before knocking softly on Lavendulan’s door.

It wasn’t…against the rules to have dinner at four fifteen, was it?

She hoped not.

The light tapping sound on her door had almost gone ignored, brushed off as someone walking down the hallway with too much in their arms so that whatever they were probably carrying, groceries more than likely, just brushed against the wall as they passed by. But then she looked up and over at her alarm clock and realized that it was later than she thought it was and put her book down.

“Coming!” Laven announced from the other side of the room where she had been sitting in the circular reading chair.

The room, for the most part, was as clean as it was going to get. Majority of the dust from her stone carving had been taken care of, the only thing she didn’t do was laundry but at least the twin-sized bed was made and Hati, her purple wolf plush, laid along the wall with its head propped up on the pillow as if it were sleeping.

It only took a few steps to cross the small room, but when she did Laven reached for the doorknob to let her guest in. “Tinaksite!” Laven smiled up at the Captian and stepped aside. “Come in, come in!”

The captain broke into a delighted smile and nodded. “It is me. I am here. I brought things for sandwiches and soup, I hope this is acceptable.” Tinaksite moved into the room and looked around, smiling slightly, feeling more than a little delighted to both see her friend again, and to have had such a warm welcome. It made her feel happy and almost a little excited.

“I made the chicken, with garlic and herbs. Not spicy like you said you like, and not fried. Homemade, and I have not limp lettuce for you to put on the sandwich if you want it. I made soup too. Potato with cheese and scallions and some bacon. It is very good. My house smelled wonderful.”

She hesitated and looked around the room again and moved towards the bed, putting her heavy bag down on it. “…It is not really a hot meal except the soup…will this be all right, Laven?”

If it wasn’t all right, there wasn’t much she could do about it now…so.

“This is more than all right. This is perfect.”

“Feel free to take a seat anywhere,” There were two chairs, one at her desk and another over in the corner of her room by the bookshelf, circular and plush with several pillows. Several nights had been spent dozing off over there, mostly out of boredom or because what she was reading was less than entertaining. But that was just a testament as to how comfortable it was.

“You really have a talent for cooking,” Twice now Tinaksite had managed to make her stomach growl hungrily and mouth water in eager anticipation of taking that first bite of food. “Are you self taught or did you learn from your parents?”

A pleased smile grew on the captain’s face and she nodded. She relaxed with the words and moved to sit in the chair at the half youma’s desk. “I enjoy cooking. I taught myself. When we moved to this country…” She shrugged. “My parents wanted to leave behind what we had. I did not. I cook to…pretend I am not…here.”

Tinaksite shrugged, wondering if that made sense but deciding halfheartedly that she didn’t really mind if it didn’t.

“It is stress relief too. And brings me new friends. I hope that I will never lose them.” She let her gaze wonder around the room a little, her lips pursing ever so slightly. “…I do not like to lose.”

It sounded as though Laven was ready for the food and she was pleased at that. If she had it her way, she would cook every day for the other agent. And the fact that she could teleport in her…meant that she just might have it her way. Maybe.

After all, even though Laven had said she didn’t want to be a strain…well. Tina had to eat anyway. It was easy to just make a little extra.

Laven offered her a soft smile, “you don’t need to worry about losing me.” Had they been beside one another she would have offered Tinaksite a reassuring hug in. Even though their friendship was relatively new, she had a feeling that it was once meant to last.

“So if I may ask, where did you grow up?” She asked, head canting to the side curiously as she glanced over her shoulder to where Tinaksite took a seat. The heavy accent it was a give away that English was a second, maybe even third, language but it could have also been that it was encouraged to speak her native language at home when around family or relatives.

From her bookshelf, she grabbed two plates and handed one to her friend.

As much as she wanted to believe Laven’s words, Tina said nothing in acknowledgement of the statement. If the words weren’t true, even if it was through no fault of Laven’s…well. She didn’t want to deal with that.

“Russia. I had never wanted to move. I miss my home. I miss my language and my culture. And my food.” With a sigh, the captain took the plate and filled it with some of what she had brought, closing her eyes for a moment. “I never wanted to come here. I do not like English. I can speak it, but I do not like to. My sisters…they enjoy it. They are more American than not.”

They were happy to be here. They couldn’t really remember their real home.

“But, that is why I do not spend much time with my family. It feels as though…they turned their backs on home.” She shrugged, taking a bite of her sandwich and sighing slightly.

“…Where are you from?”

“I was born in Riverside, California, near Los Angeles. However, when my brother passed away we ended up moving north to Sacramento. Much to my parent’s dismay, when I got a full-ride scholarship at one of the private universities here in Destiny City, I was quick to leave.” As beautiful as it was over there, the cost of living was too high for her to live on her own and roommates would have just annoyed the crap out of her with their distractions and partying.

Plus, she needed a fresh start in order to keep moving forward in her life.

Unfortunately, fate or destiny had its own plans. Because now she was trapped here in a dorm room in the Dark Kingdom rather than some remote location outside of Destiny so she could at least live somewhat of a normal life. Both Lopezite and Wolframite had been helping her cope with the changes but it was still a hard pill to swallow at times.

Laven took a bite of her sandwich and made a very please ‘yum’ sound.

“I’m curious,” she lifted her hand to cover her mouth since she hadn’t quite finished swallowing before talking again. “At the end of the day you’re still a normal civilian, you’re not bound to this place.” At least not as she was. “What’s keeping you from returning to Rushia? Doesn’t your extended family still live there?”

Tinaksite thought all of that through, and slowly nodded. How odd. How odd that both of them had come from somewhere else, one willing, one not so willing. But now, here they were talking and eating. Friends in spite of differences in where they grew up. Perhaps it was just destiny that they both were drawn into the Negaverse. Destiny so that the two of them could meet.

At the very least it was a nice story.

The captain shrugged. “Nothing is stopping me. I just…do not have the money. Do not have the drive. I want to go home…not just back there. I want my family there. My friends. I want…what I left. If I go back…I will be alone. I do not want that.”

Being alone was the very last thing she wanted. And the thing she most hated. With a sigh, Tina rubbed her face. “There is no home without people with you. But my family will not go back. I would be alone.”

“I can definitely understand that feeling.” There was an almost sad far off look in her eyes as she glanced around the room. “For a long time, this place used to feel like a prison. It still does from time to time but less often now that well…” Her eyes wandered over to the door where beyond that was Wolframite’s room on the other side of the hall.

“Now that I’ve finally been kind of crawling out of my shell and meeting new people,” albeit slowly at a snail’s pace. “It’s opened up opportunities to invite one or two friends over.” Granted that was all she really had… well, technically three counting Lopezite.

“Have you considered getting a roommate maybe? Something to make it so your apartment isn’t so quiet?” Laven took another few bites of her sandwich to keep the bread from going soggy from the condiments because she was talking too much and not enjoying the meal Tina prepared.

Tinaksite nodded, watching her thoughtfully. “I would need to find the right kind of roommate. I am picky. I had a friend. I would have offered but. We do not speak any longer. I do not know why.” She looked down for a moment and tried to shrug off the sudden feeling of melancholy that decided to come for a visit and shook her head.

“It is her loss. I suppose. I am a great person. And I cook great food. I do not like to eat soggy waffles.”

But she had. And she did. And honestly, if Laven asked her to…she knew that she would do it again. “I would have you as a roommate if I could. You would work out well. I could cook for you all of the time. It would be wonderful.”

But the girl had horns and couldn’t stay human for more than a few hours. It wouldn’t work out, no matter how much she might want it to. “…Perhaps you could help me find one? A roommate who might work out?”

“I’m sorry that things with you and your friend didn’t work out. But I’d be happy to try to help you find someone that would.” Laven smiled, but behind that display was an aching heart. She knew that if she was a normal officer like Tina that they could have made good roommates.

But as things were, Tina would have to move to the barracks and this just honestly wasn’t a place for someone to thrive. It’s like a perpetual winter without the cold or weather that came along with the season. The ambience never changed, a backlight of purple hues illuminating the area.

This was a place for monsters and lost souls. Tina was not quite there yet, even with her sadness from missing her home back in Russia she still had something yet to live for. “Until then though, you and I can plan nights out, you know you’re welcome here. Maybe we even go on patrol together?” Not the most exciting thing to do at night but it was a job that had to be done and unfortunately Laven couldn’t go out alone. Well… she could but it took a chaperone for her to leave the house.

Tinaksite nodded, giving a small smile. “Yes, I would like to hang out. Plan nights out. It sounds like a very good idea to me.” She would honestly like more, but she could very much understand why things had to be the way they were. After all, if she were ever half youma…she would be in the same position.

Not that she ever wanted such a thing to happen.

“I am very honored to be your friend, Laven. I appreciate you. Very much. And I want to remain your friend forever.” Or for as long as fate would allow. For if they weren’t meant to be friends, weren’t meant to be close…there wasn’t much that could be done about it. She knew that much very well at least, and though Tinaksite didn’t like it…there wasn’t much she could do about it.
