Since he had been alive, Friend had held a special place in his heart for the beauty of nature. He wanted to protect it from those who might do it harm. Whether that meant spilling blood among a cluster of flowers, or ensuring that a grove where a deer mother and her fawn slept was kept sheltered, Friend did anything he could think of that might ensure the peace where he traveled.
He was wary of other packs, many who seemed to delight in their own strength or cunning. He didn't wish to be the mightiest wolf, he just needed his claws and fangs to protect him and those he befriended from harm. He didn't need to be the smartest wolf in the forest, he knew how to hunt and how to find warmth in cold seasons. No, what he sought was to be one of the most kind and to live among nature as though it were his friend.
If only there were like-minded wolves in such a regard. He had often though as he traveled from the redwood territory down to the forest. Perhaps there are and I'm merely not searching hard enough for them. So, he started east, towards the ocean. He traveled for a long while, taking his time to help any that may need it on his road to the sea.
It was dark when he passed into the field of flowers, purple in hue. He wasn't entirely certain how he'd gotten there, but he felt elated, looking down on the flora. "What beauties you are." He told the flowers, lowering his muzzle towards their petals. "You look like you're being very well looked after, or perhaps you make yourselves lovely all on your own?" He spoke to them as though they were wolves. He was enamored with them, unaware if there were any nearby. "Shall I tell you lovelies a secret? I am journeying to find other wolves who might admire your beauty as much as I do. I wish to find those who will talk to flowers as easily as breathing and join me in my wish to protect you... you and any forest that needs my help." He grinned. "If you happen upon any other wolves that feel this way, I would certainly appreciate if you might pass on my secret to them. I will be coming back around through this way, if I can find you again. Perhaps you will have found me some others by then." And with that, he stretched and took pause, looking beyond the field of flowers. He was much pleased that he was able to find this beautiful place and felt rather lucky for it.

Some days, Sundew Scion enjoyed visiting with the patrolling wolves. One reason was to let her stretch her legs in a manner deemed "acceptable" by Murkwood Court standards; she was in a position where nothing she did came without scrutiny, and so sharing time with everyone was the best way to deter rumors of favoritism or worse. Another reason was to keep up to date on the ongoings of the pack, much as she preferred staying oblivious to the chattering. A third and rather guiltily placed reason was to know more about the wolves that had depended on her for so long, to see how they had grown in the new land she had transported them to. They were, in essence, almost like her second garden, even as some grew thorns that pricked her in return.
The night, the full moon allowed for her and her conversation companion to enjoy the land bathed in its silvery light as they walked. Sundew wasn't one to babble and enjoyed the soldier's silences as much as she did his words. In one of those pauses, however, they heard a stranger beyond the Sea of Sighing as they neared, and the soldier went on alert.
"Terran Sundew, if you would stay here while I investigate the intruder..." He began to move towards the source of the noise.
Sundew cocked her head slightly at him. "He does not sound harmful," she noted, quiet pawsteps following behind. "I would say the opposite."
"All the same."
The words grew clearer as they made for the Sea of Sighing, and Sundew hastened to intercept. "Please," she implored the Elf in a low tone. "He has not yet breached the border. Let me speak to him first before we assign him as a foe."
The guard gave her a skeptical look, obviously fighting between what the Marshall's orders were versus the Terran's request. After a beat, he bowed his head and relented, though he kept an unblinking gaze at her back as she waded into the field of purple flowers. It was clear he would remain only just visible in the tree-cover, poised to act should something happen.
The moonlight made her a specter as she walked among the flowers, light turning her coat almost gray and black rather than brown. It would have shown on her cloak's brooch as well, but she had never recovered the thing after the Court's first celebration; a vine instead kept it clasped around her shoulders. Sundew made no effort to hide herself as she approached slowly and stopped a polite distance away. Smaller than most dire wolves, her long, Elvish legs made up the difference, and she carried a weight to her presence that was hard to describe to outsiders other than important.
"These particular flowers know quite a few secrets," Sundew said, a faint smile on her lips, "and in fact have one of their own. Many come to admire them, but it is rare to see someone acknowledge that they can listen. Would you ask them of their mystery, or simply let them be?"

At first, Friend believed that the flowers were speaking to him, until he realized the voice was more distant. Looking up, he spotted the she-wolf. Her eyes matched the color of the flowers that surrounded them. He smiled at her as she spoke about the secrets they carried.
"While I've met many a tree that have secrets woven into their trunks and curled around their branches, I have yet to make the acquaintance of secretive flowers." He replied, his voice pleasant and cool. He broke eye contact with the other, for he did not feel threatened by her presence and instead spoke to the petals. "After asking them to inform me of the presence of another wolf, I should feel like asking them to reveal their secrets to me to be impolite. Perhaps I should tell them one of my own, to make my new friends more comfortable about opening up." He mused gently, looking thoughtful. "But which secret... I do not have many, but... perhaps. Ah yes."
He brought his muzzle closer to the violet petals and in a stage whisper, revealed. "While I am quiet of speech while awake, it has been revealed to me by others, that I snore." He told them. "Like a bear."
Raising his muzzle up, he offered the she-wolf a grin, the moonlight catching the playful twinkle in his eye. "Do you think this was enough of secret, that they might choose to tell me theirs in turn?" He asked the she-wolf standing across from him.medigel No worries! I'd love to continue this if you're still up to it!

Odd how she kept advocating for wolves that held curious but not unkind relationships with flowers. Then again, like she had conversed with Conundrum about: flowers were good at keeping secrets. It wasn't any wonder wolves would be drawn to them for more than just their beauty.
Chuckling softly, Sundew said, "I shall ask them and see what your secret is worth." She lowered her head briefly to sniff at the purple flowers, eyes closed. When they weren't full of soporific pollen, they had a faint but pleasant smell. Lifting her head, she opened her eyes again. "Flowers are quiet things for a reason: they are good at listening, being full of patience, but loathe to speak, as it is for many plants. However, they have allowed me to say this: they hold very different lives under the moon than they do under the sun."
Kind as she was, Sundew knew better than to reveal Court secrets so readily to a stranger.
"Traveler, I come to inform you that you are near the border of the Murkwood Court. May I ask what you intend? Are you weary?"

Friend watched the she-wolf confer with the flowers. When she raised her head again. He listened to her remarking on them. He wondered about the warning, for surely it must be one, was passed to him. Were these flowers hiding poison that only came out with the sun?
"I shall take heed in their words." He remarked and then perked his ears at her commentary that came next. Ah, so that is why she'd graced him with her presence, eh? She was here to protect her pack's borders. Fortunately, he was not there with ill intent and he was ready to tell her as much.
"I did not realize I had come to the border of a pack." He admitted. "My nose has come across so many new scents since I began my travels that I'm not entirely surprised it didn't alert me of the borders I ventured towards, my apologies." Now that he'd gotten the formalities out of the way, he spoke openly. "I am looking for a pack to join, as it happens. I've come across a few in my travels, but none of the connection to nature, or to flowers," He smiled down at the blossoms he'd been examining earlier. "That I tend to. Many packs seek ways that they can take advantage of passerby. I merely wish to find one that is connected to the forests I hold so near and dear to my heart, though it would be a nice addition if that particular pack happened to be more... conservative of who they stepped into their ranks." He chuckled. "Though that may act against my favor, if I do happen to find a pack like this and with their conservation they decide not to allow me entry." He said with a sigh.
"I am not entirely helpless, though my paws speak louder than these flowers, saying that I ought to rest before I fall asleep on them." He replied. "In all honestly, I feel my true weariness lies in whether I will ever find the pack I'm searching for, or if it even exists at all." He told her. "I don't suppose you know of such a place?" She certainly seemed to have a connection with the flowers, but maybe she was merely an odd duck among her bloodthirsty pack, he had no way of knowing. He only hoped that he would get an honest reply, in turn.

Sundew considered his words with a slight tilt of her head. Rare was it for her to hear someone so forthright about their intent, seemingly. The lives of elves always involved mystery and intrigue to some degree; this was a breath of fresh air. But did that alone mean he could be trusted to sit and sup with them? Sundew knew that it could be a hard life in spite of the many comforts for those that did not play the game. Still...if a possible member expressed an interest, she couldn't simply turn them away on a suspicion.
"The Terrans, our Court's druidic order, speak of a connection between all living things," Sundew explained. "The Mother speaks to us through them, and through us to others, though we may not know it. She gives, and so in turn we must see her gifts treated well. They work with hunters to avoid overhunting, for instance. And of course, you have become acquainted with some of our most treasured flowers in the Sea of Sighing." She motioned past the border with her chin. "It was the earth that led us to these lands when we were in dire straits, through vision and prayer. I begin every day with thanks and praise to Her for it. If that is something that appeals to you, traveler, then perhaps there is a home for you here yet."

Friend waited for the she-wolf to speak, the only movement coming from a slight wag of his tail or the occasional flick of his ears as he detected the passing of animals in the forest.
When at last she spoke, his eyes gleamed in interest. He wasn't familiar with the term druid, but the notion of a connection between all living things. To have a group that would speak on behalf of nature itself. He felt a pull towards this she-wolf and towards the pack she represented. Did it appeal to him? Was there even a need to ask? But yes, of course there was. For while there may be a connection between all living things he and this she-wolf were still merely strangers. She could not possibly know all of his intentions, just as these flowers could not know them, if he did not tell her outright.
"I have often felt that there is a greater connection among us all that not all of our canine kin are as grateful for as they ought to be. We would starve without prey and would find ourselves in danger of the climates if nature was not there to shield us from it, whether that came in large trees or dens of stone." He smiled. "Perhaps it is not mere chance that I stopped by today, but this Mother who has led me to like-minded wolves." He remarked and bowed his head. "It would be my honor to be considered as one who could join your ranks, for I, too, would like to be apart of a group that gave the Mother her proper thanks that she is owed... and to form relations with the wolves of your pack, if they should see manners as clearly as you do." He said, raising his gaze. "If you would have me, that is." He added, for he realized that even with his pretty words of dedication, nothing was set in stone until this she-wolf gave her consent to the idea.medigel I'd say in the next couple of posts we could wrap this up?
