The sun had gone behind the mountain causing the breeze to turn chilly in the mid afternoon. It was autumn and the leafy trees were still displaying their colors in what leaves were left. Sootsnout was on patrol along the forested boundary of the lupin herd. She had paused to listen among the rustling of the dried leaves and typical forest sounds. She was in her wolf skin, her eyes and nose much keener than her equine form. The forest around her had grown quite dark with the early setting of the sun but her bi colored eyes adjusted. She kept her head low, allowing the smells along the ground to reach her nose as she trotted along. She paused at a smell here, a sound there or to mark the line. Nothing ever exciting seemed to happen around this valley, the few stars here kept to themselves and there was few of them anyway. Sootsnout didn't see what the point of coming here but Shappa felt it was a good place to work on her plan to dominate the lupin world. And with babies on the way, Shappa was more cranky and irritable than usual and adamant about keeping everyone or at least herself safe. This meant no visitors.

Russet brown paws stretched wide against the ground as blue eyes watched the surroundings outside his hiding place. Crouching low, Arik Silvermane waited for a chance at a small bit of game, he was hungry after all. He hadn't really eaten since the day before and things were getting a little slim in his home territory. So now he had branched out and headed closer to the grounds of one of the local herds. This one boasted alcor like himself, but he didn't take too kindly to be accepted into their lines and rules. Fur ruffling in the slight breeze that wafted over his hiding place in a fairly dense bush, he waited. Something was coming, it was closer then he wanted. It sounded about his size, if not maybe either a little smaller, or large? He was never one to judge things on size, if he could eat it, it was as good as dead. Shifting his weight forward, his nose poked out through the bush to get a good lung full of air, he grinned. Seemed one of the local pack was out on patrol. "Lovely, there won't be anything here tonight." Arik groaned as he made his way out of the bush, not overly caring that he walked out in front of the Lupin herd member, he was to find other hunting grounds. Even if he had to cut across their lands to get there.

Sootsnout wasn't very far away from the hiding place of the interloper. A few lengths away, she was just starting to pass when a larger brown wolf popped out. The breeze had been against her in even scenting him out so his appearance startled her. Sootsnout whipped around and growled at him. The white and black hackles rose in response. It had been a long time since she'd seen anyone outside this pack and a life time since she seen another even of her kind besides this pack. How many are there now, she wondered to herself.
"Who goes there?" she called over to him. "Friend or foe?"

Arik merely turned his head at the female wolf who had turned quick and was growling at him. While he would normally do the same on his own turf, this was more her turf. At the moment he wasn't really looking to tear the pelt off another. "Just passing through." Was all he said, in a kinda bland tone. "Thought there would be game here, but seems there is none at the moment."
He gave a slight shrug, one that gave off a kind of lazy tone. Even though when he was a teen he was more the strict character who wanted to protect his den sight and what not. Now he was just lazy and hunted when he really needed to. But with winter coming soon, things would be far skinnier then the current moment. "You wouldn't know a good place to get a rabbit or two, would ya?"

Sootsnout was rather taken aback by his bland and uninterested tone and body language. Her hackles slowly laid back down as she watched him carefully but listened to him fully. So he was just out looking for food. Sounds reasonable. Only problem was the cantankerous she wolf further into the boundaries of the pack. Sootsnout was more about keep everyone else from Shappa's wrath and save Sootsnout's ear drums.
She straightened up and sniffed a little with an air no non sense. She gave a quick nod, glanced around before looking back at the strange wolf. Sootsnout knew a decent place where rabbits like to fill up on food before winter hit. But they would have to take a bit of a round about path to get there.
"I do, if you don't mind a bit of exorcise."

Arik gave the female a half lidded glance before giving a half hearted shrug. It wasn't like he was needed anywhere else. His mother had let him be on his own for a while and he was just not too motivated to do much of anything at the moment. Turning back around to face the black and grey female, Arik moved a bit closer.
"I traveled this far, not going to hurt to travel a bit further. I was just going to cut across these lands, while minding to stay away from those that live here." Yep, he was that daring to just mosy across the herd lands of another to get to where he was going instead of going around. "I'm sure if I traveled with you through your lands, no one would think the wiser."
Little did he know, that she was trying to keep him away from someone else in her herd lands. For the time being, he would follow this wolf to get something to eat, it has felt like ages since he had eaten... Even though he had had something just that morning.

Sootsnout giggled nervously.
"Oh....we're going around the packlands. Mostly because the lead mare is a right b***h, but being pregnant makes her even worse. It's best not to even tempt crossing her right now. The others probably would be curious but not mind."
She kept following the outer limits of the territory by scent and landmarks. At a gentle trot, they'd make good time and not wear out too fast. If she could snag a couple rabbits, Shappa might not be too hard on her either. Pregnancy definitely doesn't agree with that mare, that is for sure. But Shappa has plans....
"So where do you come from? Are you in a herd or a loner?"

Arik stopped a moment when the leader of the pack was a large B, and was pregnant. Well. That changed things as he never wanted to be near someone like that. Shaking himself as if there was something running through his fur, Arik trotted to catch up. "That doesn't sound too fun. I assume that most everyone is staying away from her at this time then?" he inquired as they traveled on.
"I live mostly with my mother. We don't have a pack anymore. After all that happened, my father and a sibling have vanished. Along with the most of everyone else we were with. So for now it is just my mother and I." Arik said with a bit of a shrug, the best he could while moving. "As of late, mom's been accompanying another stallion, not sure what is going to happen." Nor did it really seem matter to him at the moment.
"What about you? I take it that you are from the pack we are skirting around, but anything from before that?"

Sootsnout slowed to a walked and then stopped. Once Arik caught up, Soot resumed walking. She thought on what he said for a moment. Shappa is what she is, that's for sure. Sure pregnancy didn't help right now, but that also is what it is and all part of the plan. Shappa didn't seem to be enjoying having to carry her actual offspring though. I'm sure if could, she'd make me carry her kids for her, Sootsnout thought. Although I'd like my own at this point. Sootsnout was growing weary of her alpha and her mood swings. Sootsnout had grown to love the pack they were in, the family was trying its best to survive, the now grown pups were fun to play with. Shappa kinda crapped on it all and couldn't wait to have her babies and leave. But why, they finally had a home.
"I am from the pack here but not always. The alpha female, my twin brother and I have been together since we were foals. My brother and I follow our alpha because she's helped us survive. I always saw us as a family but I'm starting to wonder if our alpha really cares about us or just what we can do for her. The male and his offspring are great though. But as much as well all would like to avoid the alpha female and do our own thing, it's easier to cater to her needs and keep her mellow than not."
Sootsnout gave a rather harsh laugh. Despite all they have been through, she wouldn't be phased if Shappa vanished. Sootsnout wanted a family, not what Shappa planned.

Arik Silvermane watched this female wolf as she spoke of her alpha. In truth, she sounded like quite the b***h. Tilting his head a little at the mention of pups and leaving, this made hi frown. In a way it sounded like his own father and one sister that just up and vanished in a night. But to this he gave a mental shrug, he didn't much care for the stallion that abandoned his mother and left her with the three remaining kids. Be they grown or no, he still had some responsibility to them.
"Doesn't sound like much of an alpha to me. Much like my father wasn't much of an alpha either. Granted it was just my own family, but he was up there with my mother. She took on responsibility of me and my two other siblings when he and a sister just up and left." There was some disdain in his tone towards his father, not really wanting to follow in his paws.
"I can see why you want to avoid her while she is in this state. I have never been around a pregnant mares. From what you are saying, they can be hell to be around.'" he had stopped to scratch behind an ear as if something were biting him.

"I'm sorry to hear that you've been let down by your father. There are times I find myself missing my mother. She died when I was very little. But I hope to be an amazing mother some day. And I'll do everything to keep my family together."
Sootsnout looked over at Arik and smiled.
"I agree, Shappa isn't much of an alpha. She doesn't have what it takes to be one. I don't think the stallion does either. From what I've learned, he's been fooled twice now by mares." She shrugged.
Sootsnout took a new direction and started to head down a small ravine. "We're almost there!" She reached the bottom and trotted over to some bushes and peered underneath. On the other side was a warren of rabbits out eating and playing in the grass space.
"See, yummy rabbits."

Arik was silent for a bit, there wasn't too much more to really say. A prickling feeling itched over his back before he shook it off. This talking of parents and alphas. He didn't really see the thrill of the position, it seemed more of a pain in the backside then anything else. Over seeing others and making sure no one stepped out of line. Well it all depended on who lead the pack and who was inside it. He was happy being alone and in silence, though sometimes it did become a little too much. Silence was at times deafening..
As they went through the ravine and to the other side, he spied the plump rabbits that didn't seem to have a care in the world. At least there was food, his stomach protested in his wait and watching the rabbits. Really he wasn't going to leap a head of Sootsnout, these were her lands... Mostly and she had more right to the rabbits.
"Plump rabbits, must have been feeding well this season." Arik said as his tongue rolled over his muzzle. "Ladies First." He said extending a paw to show that he would follow her lead.
