It wasn't that T'nus thought a gold could rise and then the whole sky-whirl ordeal of touchings and hatchings would happen again anytime soon, though he wasn't thinking it was entirely off the table for the rest of the Turn. Statistically it was impossible for there not to be another one (or two), what with the sheer amount of Golds High Reaches alone boasted, not to mention the other Weyrs with their own little groups of golds.

The most recent hatching, that High Reaches had been involved in one way or another, had been that sham show at Western. The Candidatemaster Second supposed relationships had been improved somewhat, considering this time it was one of their own who Impressed a Gold, but then again who knew the fickle hearts of those in management? Did the seeming trade of having a Western girl Impress Gold at High Reaches and a High Reaches girl claim Gold there balance things out? It all depended on how well they did, he supposed, based on the outcome of their future performances. T'nus claimed not to be a wise man, just one who tended to judge others with his own system of plus and minus.

Which lead him to the lesson today, which was to be a bit different than most. The concept of caring for dragons had been without fail drilled into the heads of all the children daily, but what about what goes beyond that? The barracks had emptied for more than just Impressions, of course, and the CS had dropped off a few aged out folks himself. The tears on some had been obnoxious, but the overall lack of plans on nearly all of them was maddening. Had the lessons brainwashed them all into thinking being a rider was the ultimate end game, and either dying on the sands or getting a dragon the only two options? Had no one prepared for what happens should they age out? He knew some had the ideas, it had been covered, but not to the degree T'nus wanted it to be. Never to his degree.

That was going to be fixed, either today or tomorrow; it certainly was going to be handled within the Sevenday or those who faltered were going to find themselves having some extra time with him until they sorted themselves out. T'nus didn't particularly care so long as he got his answer. An answer that, as he looked up from where he'd positioned himself to watch the candidates arrive, would be given loud and clear.

"Everyone," His voice boomed, a nice change from how only several months ago he sounded as though he'd been speaking dust. Recovery from illness was always wonderful. "Find a seat. We have much to discuss today." As if to make sure they all understood, he looked to his beloved dragon with his thoughts. Minimuth, little love, make sure the stragglers know this isn't an optional event and that missing it just means we'll have a personal, one on one discussion later.

All of the candidate would hear a familiar (for most, honestly Minimuth enjoyed talking at them) voice boom into their heads that they needed to arrive on time and ready for a discussion, or else T'nus would be seeing to them personally. There may have a been a 'don't waste him time' added in there, subtly of course. Minimuth would never dare break the rules.

Quote:
TL;DR T'nus is gathering candidates to find out what they have for plans if they age out/become unable to stand due to some unforeseen incident! This will be a mini-ORP of sorts, with the option for a PRP with T'nus very largely on the table! Feel free to come in and talk amongst yourselves or directly to T'nus! When everyone has "arrived" he'll start the lesson.

T'nus is the Candidatemaster Second! He was sick for much of the last turn due to that massive wave of death-flu that went through, but he's been back ICly at least since right after Magic Clutch happened. Minimuth is his bronze dragon, a tiny lil' guy who enjoys judging others and being around T'nus.

Kaiator was not looking forward to this discussion.

Who was, though? Sure, they'd all have to consider the possibility of not Impressing--nothing was guaranteed, after all. But there was something about being dragged in en masse to talk about it that rubbed him the wrong way, getting his nerves on edge long before the talking even started.
Still, he filtered in with the other candidates all the same, looking calm and collected despite the prickle of a bad mood brewing at the back of his skull. It was time to shine! As much as one could during a group talk about what you'd do if you failed to do the one thing you've been training for for so many months, which was to say...not much at all, in fact.

The first hurdle to overcome was finding just the right place to stand. Right now, Kaiator wanted to be out of the center of attention for once, at least until he'd brewed up a suitable cover story for what he'd do if he effectively flunked out. He could just go right back to the family business, but with the pressure on back home, Kaiator didn't think returning empty-handed was such an excellent idea. If it wasn't for the fact that he actually liked his family, he'd almost be tempted to never come back at all.
He scans the crowd for any semi-familiar faces he could stand near enough to somewhat hide behind--none jump out at him, and he curses lightly under his breath before resigning himself to somewhere in the middle. Maybe if T'nus was looking for any 'enthusiastic volunteers' to question, he'd be searching through the candidates on the outer fringes--he could only hope his strategizing would pay off one way or another.

Dehka was as prompt and punctual as ever when it came to lessons--even unexpected ones. Life outside of the Weyr? Oh, it was a sound topic to be sure... just one that he and many others didn't even want to think about. Still, he sat quietly as instructed, keeping his head down as he subtly glanced at the others through his eyelashes.

If he never Impressed.... what... would he do? He didn't have any remarkable skills. Realistically speaking, maybe he should think about taking up a Craft... The Weyr had no use for anyone that couldn't pull their weight, but leaving seemed wrong, somehow. Maybe T'nus would have suggestions. Both the Candidatemaster and his Second made Dehka nervous. So far, he'd done his best to work hard and keep his head down, knowing that neither would have any sympathy if he did anything less.

Still. Sometimes it all just felt very overwhelming. He wasn't Kahbrohm--and sometimes, he wished he could be.

For Tonori, sitting in the back of the room where his height and breadth would not turn him into somebody's optical obstacle, lessons tended to be long stretches of time wherein he listened much and spoke as little as possible. He was always punctual about arriving and did his best to look presentable when he did so. He tried to behave with courtesy, which is why he kept to the back of the space, and also to avoid being asked to answer any questions which might involve his own opinions.

Thus, the large candidate waited in self-contained silence for the discussion to begin, aware of the other candidates who came in before and after he had, and noting as he tended to do where trouble might happen if it was going to.

Spoiler tagged until T'nus actually brings up the topic of discussion.

the question of what he would do if he aged out was a simple one: he would go back to working as a hold guard. He was pretty sure they would take him back. He had been more than adequate in the position. In fact, now that the Weyr had troubled to teach him to read and do sums and the like, he might even qualify for a higher ranked position, should one become available, though he wasn't convinced that he wanted to be put in charge.

As usual, he kept his thoughts to himself. He knew he wasn't all that bright, and there was no reason to remind everyone of that by opening his mouth and saying something stupid, as he was sure to do.

Lusialu

The girl had always been punctual, particularly when to lessons or duties, and today was no exception. Taking a seat, she tried not to fidget, and kept an eye out for her friend. Unfortunately, the room filled up quickly, and she made note to seek out Vaali later. Instead, she glanced over at the Candidate nearby, Kaiator. She didn't recognize him as a fellow weyrbrat, but she offered a small smile if he did glance her way. It never hurt to be friendly, after all, even if she wasn't as upfront about it as some of her siblings. Even if her fellow Candidate didn't see, she at least would do her part.

Dehka would also get a smile (and a small, quick wave) if he did look her way.

Well, even if she couldn't find Vaali in the crowd, she could always check in with Dehka afterwards. Compare notes, and hope that neither caught the ire of the Candidatemasters.

Chayrel

Near the back, closer to Tonori, the scrappy, dark-skinned Chayrel sat with his arms cross and frown planted upon his features. He desperately wished Charm could be with him, but rules meant the flits had to be sent off during lectures. Not that he'd ever admit to needing her, but... The little thing did bring out a softer side to him, especially when Fehral wasn't near.

The subject T'nus wished to talk about had him on edge, and already irritable. Defensive by nature, his biggest fear was going back to the mines of Nabol, and his second biggest fear, was being sent away from the Weyr. Whether he Impressed or not, the young man found security and safety within the mountains; perhaps it was simply because they saved him when he'd had no hope, but... he didn't want to leave. Even if he could go somewhere else.

But what would he do? What could he do? He was still learning to read and write... But. He was a hard worker, even if he was... a bit surly. Maybe he'd find himself in the with the Lower Caverns workers? He didn't have the skill or talent to take on a true Craft, but... he knew how to work hard. The question he didn't know, and the answer he feared, was whether or not that would be enough.

Faranth... He was going to fail this lesson, wasn't he?

"Not leavin', that's the plan," he muttered to himself. Wasn't that what they all wanted, though?

Chayrel's not great at being social but have a defensive and slightly agitated Candidate.

From the corner of his eyes, Tonori observed the folded arms and dark scowl on his companion. Chayrel. In another time and place, Tonori would have marked the body language as someone who could be a potential discipline problem if he were one of the guard, or someone who would resist taking orders from a member of the guard if not. However, in this time and place Tonori noted the absence of Chayrel's firelizard, and if the other candidate was not going to cause trouble by bringing his flit to lessons, Tonori doubted he would cause trouble in more disruptive ways.

The undertone Chayrel spoke in when he mentioned that his plan was not to leave the Weyr absolutely did not invite comment or conversation, and yet he was so far the only person to speak, other than T'nus, and so it was impossible for Tonori to pretend that he hadn't heard him. Not when the two of them were so near each other. He turned his head toward the sullenly posed candidate and offered an expression which on someone else's face might've passed for sympathetic, but on Tonori's immobile features didn't really look like much at all.

Uta
Yay defensive and agitated! He and Tonori probably have a bit in common as former mine workers (which you probably already knew because you are on top of things like that but I am not usually so quick on the uptake).

There's a fair few more faces showing up now, but even then, Kaiator isn't completely sure this is all of them. Just how many candidates did this weyr even have? Every time he looked somewhere else, there were more. Some small part of him (larger than he'd admit, genuinely) bristles at the perceived competition; but then again, was it really so bad? It's just many, many more opportunities. Probably.
One of the newcomers is big--Tonori isn't hard to spot, and Kaiator pauses to give him a quick once-over in the process of his attempts at popping his back. Where did this guy come from? Maybe he should try to track him down after everything is said and done--it couldn't hurt to be on decent terms with someone who looked like they could snap someone in half. Grimacing softly as his joints finally crack, he turns back around, reminding himself that he really ought to stop fidgeting so much if he was going to avoid being noticed.

He's not exactly comfortable in his chosen seat, but it's too late to change his mind about it now. Still, he's managed to catch someone's eye, apparently--in his carefully controlled scanning of the room, he spots Lusialu flashing him a small smile, and does the same in kind almost on reflex. Kaiator suspects she's a little too far away to have any kind of pleasant conversation with, but he at least notes her down as someone friendly for future reference. He'd have to try and pick out a name later if he wants to do anything more than that, but with T'nus gearing up to grind their dreams into the dust, he's not sure he's got the time at the moment.

Slowly, he slides down the back of the chair just a tad, trying to minimize how visible he was. Maybe he should've opted for a better thought-out plan than just squishing himself down and hoping for the best, but! Too late for such things now.

Tarroi

Taking a seat in the middle of the room, Tarroi stretched his long legs out under the chair in front of him languidly and leaned back, a slight smirk on his lips. Honestly, what did T'nus have to tell them that they already hadn't heard? He'd been here long enough -- five turns, if he was keeping count (and he was) -- that he'd learned everything the Candidatemasters had to teach them all several times over. Unless it was another new rule or something, he really wasn't that interested. Instead, he looked around as the other Candidates filed in and sat down. Lots of new faces. Oh Faranth's first egg, it's going to be another repeat, isn't it?...

Tarroi sank lower into his chair. This was going to be a long day.

Heida

There were a few open seats in the front of the room, and Heida took one of them, a smile across her face. She knew just about everything there was to know about being a Candidate, between the lessons and having grown up at the Weyr, so that meant this must be something new! That was exciting to the girl, and her smile widened. Watching people continue to enter and find seats, she saw a lot of faces she recognized and a few she didn't -- was this for the benefit of the new Candidates? She made a point to note each one so that she could approach them later and see if they had any questions. Heida wanted High Reaches Weyr to be as welcoming a place as possible!

She was looking for a particular face, though, one who hadn't entered yet. Wonder where Kedah is? she thought, scanning the room over one shoulder. Surely her friend wouldn't dare miss a lecture...

Thankfully, she hadn't been late. But Tarnaria found herself sitting slightly apart from everybody. There wasn't THAT much space between her and the other candidates, but she didn't have somebody sitting close like best friends did, at least for the moment. She'd kept mostly to herself up to this point, and the rather large hatching had shown her she should maybe start to find others to befriend more, while the hatching at Western... Really, that hadn't shown her too much. She watched the Candidatemaster Second, wondering just what they'd been called in for. Had she missed somebody misbehaving on the Sands at the Western hatching? Or had something else happened?

When she glanced around, Tarnaria realized there were more faces missing than those that had Impressed at Western.

With a slight rub to her sore wrist, Tuelarua had shuffled in with all the other candidates for the lecture. She was ever punctual, wanting--craving something new to learn in lessons. Shoulders regretfully removed of her trio of flits. Yet she glanced around, spying a few familiar faces among those in the hall. She was tempted, so very tempted, to perhaps go and sit by someone, yet only made her way towards a seat to the side with few people around.

Discussion involving her or not, she was present and ready.

It looked as though several children had started to filter in on time, though it was odd for T'nus to be calling people into their twenty-turns children still. The better term would probably be just calling them call Candidates but they were still young in his eyes. He was old enough to have fathered a few of them, were he the type to have any inclination, but not all. A smile graced his face, one that was entirely with lips and none with eyes, making it feel a bit forced and hollow. "Thank you to all of those who've arrived on time. We'll wait a bit for any more stragglers to come in, so until then feel free to ask me any off-topic questions you may have about exactly why you're here, or about anything in general."

It was exceptionally rare for T'nus to be willing to have an open Q+A session with the candidates, even though he was generally a talkative fellow. If someone approached him with a question he would answer in his own way, even if it wasn't exactly what the person wanted to hear; he had no reason to stay silent if anyone honestly wanted to learn something. Of course the way he'd phrased things probably didn't make it any easier to just pipe up and ask away. "So, how is everyone? Enjoying lessons? Having trouble with anything?"

It was a loaded question. It had to be a loaded question, or why else would he ask it with such a smile still on his face? Was this part of the thing they really needed to discuss, or was he just testing to see if someone would move the topic forward like a good candidate? Either way he sat at the front, hands folded neatly as he watched more candidates file in.

Quote:
feel free to ask T'nus anything! i'll reply in turn and move forward as well, ohohohoh! you can also talk among yourselves......if you dare~

Rahmsii came to sit beside Tuela, giving her knee a reassuring squeeze as he sat down. He folded his hands delicately in his lap, my my did the atmosphere seem somber today. Heavy brow wrinkling, unpleasant shiver of anticipation.

Worrying his lip between his teeth he cast his gaze about the room. Yes, yes lessons were fine - a veneer. The soft question cushion a blow. Oh how delicious, save for the flutter if anxiety.. Was someone in trouble? Was HE in trouble? Whatever could it be. He kept his mouth snapped shut, waiting for the moment to unfurl. Were there something they haven't had a lesson for yet?

====
Urzoh happened to be one of the early arrivals. Sitting on her hands and erratically making her leg bounce. What could be so important to call them here like this? She wanted to turn to a neighbor and speculate, but T'nus didn't really seem to be in the mood to put up with whispers. Pity.

Instead up down up down went her knee. She listened to pleasantries. Lesson small talk. Maybe when everyone finally got here they'd figure out just eant was going on.

Tarroi, one of those twenty-something-turn Candidates, lazily raised his hand.

"I have a question. Why are we here?" The young former Holdbrat voiced his question with what almost passed for a smirk, as if to say yeah, T'nus, I'm calling your bluff on this. "Is this going to be a new lesson or a repeat for the new kids? 'Cause it would be a shame to have your more experienced Candidates spoil things for the newer ones..."

Tonori had been a candidate long enough that he had developed a sense for when a seemingly innocent question was loaded. It wasn't that different a sense from the one which told him when a person being belligerent was just mouthing off or was actually spoiling for a fight. In this case, the large candidate was fairly certain there was more to T'nus's question than it seemed, but he didn't know what the instructor was looking for, so he kept to his tried and true method of dealing with things and kept his mouth shut.

His gaze did slide toward Tarroi when the other candidate asked his question. That smirk was one Tonori would have recognized as belonging to someone who wanted to push the limits because he felt safe enough in his position that he didn't need to guard his tongue closely. Tonori looked harder at him to try to discern what sort of protection Tarroi thought he had here. None of them were irreplaceable, in Tonori's estimation, though perhaps there were dragons yet to be born who felt differently. It didn't seem wise to test their instructor, but that wasn't Tonori's problem.

Valeska liked being on time. In fact, she liked be earlier than most everyone else and usually she was. She found it made her less anxious when she could be there before everyone to settle her nerves. However, she didn’t anticipate getting so terribly lost in the many many halls of the large Weyr. While she could say she had just arrived a few days ago and was still getting use to everything, the reality was it was all a little overwhelming. She was a creature of habit and as such she did not do well with new. This whole candidacy thing was as new as her small mundane life could even begin to imagine.

But despite looking a little disheveled from all the brisk walking and eventual running she did, she managed to remain somewhat composed when she stepped into the room. Her eyes passed over the ones already there and her stomach gave a sick churn of nerves or sickness or something generally unpleasant. Most of them had found seats and she saw others looking for empty ones. She instantly looked for an open seat in the back and quickly plopped down. At least she wasn’t technically late. She kept her eyes downcast but managed to sneak a glance at once in a while. Everyone looked so composed and special. It was still a wonder why she was here at all.

She fingered her plain shirt nervously trying to distract herself by wondering what their lesson was about today. Some of the others seemed like they already knew what was going on which made her even more self-conscious. She didn’t have a lot to go by in terms of what candidates were taught. Then again, she knew so little that any information would be helpful. At least she had always been a very good student and she liked learning so hopefully she’ll be able to catch up.

When T’nus finally spoke up, it was much more information than she expected. She shrank back into her seat and glanced around to see if anyone would actually answer him. She didn’t have to wait long as one of the boys instantly asked what many of them likely were thinking. However, his words did not make her feel at all better. There were more experienced candidates here? She may be at an even bigger disadvantage than she thought.
