I love creating scenic avatars. Although I've seen plenty of discussion about them around the forums, I couldn't find a guide, so I thought I'd make my own. This guide will detail different techniques as well as catalog items useful in scenic design.

Update 02.26.2018 Added new items to Architecture (exterior), Nature (trees) and Lighting, and also added a few missing recolors. WHAT ARE SCENICS?
Scenics are avatars with hidden bases and they typically depict a scene. They are not to be confused with backgrounds, which are common elements of a scenic, but also often used with traditional avatars. Backgrounds are a type of item whereas a scenic is an entire avatar.
Here's an example of a scenic:

This guide will discuss techniques for hiding your avatar base and catalog items useful in the creation of scenics. Although I don't think it's possible to catalog every suitable item - I've seen some truly creative uses for items I never would have considered when making scenics - I hope to establish an extensive and helpful guide nonetheless.

ANTS/NIGHTMARE*/WISP**

This technique has limited applications, however, it provides a clean "canvas" and offers some interesting layering options. You'll want to experiment with the order in which you add items, as it does affect the layering. There are also limited items that can be used, so it's a matter of trial and error.
Here are a few examples of scenics I've made with this technique:

CHEEPZ/WITCH OF MIRRORS

1. Equip Cheepz (I Am pose 1 or 2) 2. Equip Witch of Mirrors 3. 4. Start creating!
I haven't personally used this technique, but I saw it shared awhile ago so I figured I'd include it here (I have Cheepz and did confirm, through use of the MP dressing room, that it works). It seems to have the same limitations as the Ants/Nightmare/Wisp technique, but (at the time of this post), the price tag is a bit lower.
I'll add examples if I ever use this combination.
NIGHTMARE*/WORLD OF _____
+ ororor
1. Equip The Nightmare (Bitten) 2. Equip World of _____ (default pose) 3. Start creating!
I only use this combination when I want to turn my avatar - the next technique uses another combination with World of _____ but leaves much less blood to cover. Unfortunately, it only works from the front, so this is my go-to option for reversed avatars. You can get different effects by turning your avatar, so sometimes this is useful. You'll more than likely want to hide or distract from the blood with a scarf, necklace, or other item - this can vary depending on your choice of background. Different colors of World of _____ can make this easier as well.
Here's an example of scenics I've made with this technique:
I don't use this technique much. lol This was my first scenic and made before I learned the next technique - I used the scarf from to create the owl nest.

4. Equip World of _____ (default pose) 5. Start creating!
Up until recently, this was my go-to technique for creating scenics. It leaves a very small amount of blood to cover and also allows use of head and hand-equipped items. The only limitation is that it must be used from the front.
Here are a few examples of scenics I've made with this technique:
You might notice in the third example that I didn't bother covering the blood. I decided it worked well enough with the color scheme and falling leaves to let it alone. In the first example, the bird nest is from and an example of how nicely head items can be used with this technique.

NANO-C*/NIGHT STALKER/AGAPE**/PLANET X/_____'S ROSE
4. Equip Planet X (Alien Princess' Body) 5. Equip _____'s Rose (Spirits of _____, either hand - left will place a few butterflies near the top of your "canvas", right will create a line of them from the bottom to the right, but this will shear some backgrounds. Sometimes this can create interesting effects, so it's best to experiment) 6. Start creating!
This is my favorite technique at the moment. It allows the use of head and hand-equipped items (the hand not occupied by the butterflies, anyway), and _____'s Rose comes in so many different colors that it's easy to blend. Even when blending isn't possible, so many scenics feature nature and the outdoors that they fit in nicely regardless. No matter what, butterflies are a lot prettier than a dripping bloody neck. lol The only limitations here are that you can't turn the avatar around without getting a giant squidgy mass of tentacles and you lose a hand for holdable items.

As you can see, the butterflies are virtually invisible in the first and third examples. In the second example they're visible but pretty inoffensive, at least in my opinion.

Some items create beautiful light effects for your scenics. Many of these are also backgrounds, but when layered properly can apply rays of light, warm glows, mysterious mist or moody shadows. Some of these will introduce other foreground elements as well. Multiple poses are displayed where appropriate.

When I would use this technique, I would use other alternatives that Will-o-the-Wisp. There aren't too many and some can be pricey so I'm only listing the few that have cheapish alternatives (the images do link to the specific item mentioned):

You should be able to use the Nano-C (Target Assist Helmet) + Night Stalker (Faceless Visage) + Agape to get headless. Personally, I haven't tried it because I don't have Nano-C but maybe when Avatar Builder is working I will. Tested it, Nano-C doesn't work with Marejesty and neither does it work like Bleep it and Deerly Beloved. Only Agape works.
One reason why I like this method over Ghosting Behind is the fact that it won't cut certain items that you stand in, like a tea cup or a bowl. With the Ghosting Behind method, it'll cut parts of the object. For example, the 1st image below is with Ghosting Behind and the 2nd image is with Your Marejesty.

So after messing around with these headless methods, I found out you can use it in place of the Nano-C/Agape/Nigh Stalker when using the Butterfly method (aka using Planet X and Winter's Rose). Currently testing other things with this and will update with possible another alternative later
Foreground Cutting Method

This method leaves behind this colored blob (depending on which recolor of Sky Child you're using). It will look something like this: Most backgrounds hide the blob so it's okay depending on what you want to do. Things to note about this method: 1. It removes foreground layers. This is a result of Sky Child's bow. Can be good or bad depending on what you want. Examples of foreground cutting: With Winter Prayer, it removes the shrine box. With Firefly's Flame, it removes the lighting overlay and the grass. 2. It works with background cutters. In comparison, the Marejesty method can have one or more of the items used to go "invisible" may be removed when using a background cutter. I found this one by accident recently and I now feel like I need to spend more time trying to see how many "I am"/"You are" poses could possibly overlap with each other in this way. So far this method reminds me of the foreground cutter method, at least when using an "I am" pose. I tested it with the background of Winter Prayer and it has the same effect.

Like it says, this method works only on female base. And I also don't really use this method except for playing with it in Avatar Builder. It doesn't work with background cutters, unless you don't mind a random torso...

Combined with any headless method, you essentially go invisible. It might not always be perfect but it can be a nice alternative
